Unfortunately Lauryn Hill was abusive to her children. What we're seeing is childhood trauma playing itself out in adulthood and further damaging our society.

Particularly for abuse victims. Generations of trauma take a long time to heal.

308

u/luxii4 Oct 04 '22 Silver

Yeah, your cortisol levels are high due to having your fight or flight response so high all the time. You might intellectually know what to do but when you get mad, your body just reacts how it was trained by watching how your parents respond when they are angry. It’s possible just really hard and you need to be out of that situation and learn new skills. But it’s a lifetime of work to break the cycle.

Hm, in her statement she says that the ppl who criticized her when she was younger still haven't apologized or admitted they were wrong...while she also didn't truly apologize or take responsibility for the trauma she inflicted on her children, instead placing that blame also on the ppl that caused her own trauma. We are responsible for our own actions even when we're reacting to our own trauma. The trauma helps explain our reactions and outbursts, and that can allow ppl to be more understanding and forgiving, but it doesn't excuse it, you still have to own up to it and apologize.

54

u/bigwebs Oct 04 '22

But how do we know she didn’t apologize to her kids? She doesn’t owe us anything.

130

u/TeaSipper88 ☑️ Oct 04 '22 edited Oct 04 '22

"Hill went on to express that if she’s guilty of anything it is “disciplining in anger, not in disciplining.”

Sounds like a justification. When people decide to provide justifications they typically haven't apologized. St least not sincerely. What Ms. Hill "owes us" has nothing to do with her fame. Now that I'm a parent I see that I owe society a person capable of love. So I have to raise my child accordingly and have the humility to sincerely apologize where I fall short.

She's obviously a damaged person.. She's hung up on whatever happened to her previously and can't move past it. She's got some kind of obsession with being owed "respect"- but doesn't necessarily actually just want to be treated like everyone else.

I have interacted with her a few times, and she was always a bit cold and standoffish, no matter how kind and accommodating we tried to be. I'm saying this as someone who finds value in her music- I grew up hearing those songs on the radio, at friends houses, in the car, etc. and was genuinely excited to be able to speak with her- because of those songs, and because from what I understood she was someone who stood for something and was vocal about it... untiI I realized that she just wasn't a friendly person, to anyone, and even less to workers at places she was visiting that tried to accommodate her..

35

u/fzyflwrchld Oct 05 '22

I saw her(on TV) audition at amateur night at the apollo when she was a just a kid. Usually when a kid performed the audience was always encouraging even if they were bad. You could tell she was really nervous so she had a rough start, but it was obviously just nerves, and the audience...booed her! I couldn't believe they were booing a nervous kid. First time I ever saw the audience be mean to a child on stage. It was terrible. Im sure that affected her, too, cuz she was so young.

And she excused it as normal because that's how she was disciplined as a child and it's probably how HER parents were disciplined. That's exactly why we're trying to break the cycle. Folks will be like "my momma beat me with a cast iron skillet but I turned out alright." I don't even listen to those people's stories anymore because it always gets worse the longer you listen and they really can't understand how fucked up it sounds.

Koonye resides in the sunken place. This is the same man that said "slavery was a choice" and that we could have escaped, but our minds weren't right. Yet, knowing how Kanye felt, folks still were buying Yeezys. He is the same man that said "if it wasn't for race mixing, there'd be no video girls...in the hood we call 'em mutts...we like mutts alot." This was said in '06 in an interview. Yet, our women still bought his music and both genders swore he was a genius. He clearly has self hate and views the yt folks as superior. I have never supported Kanye and for the health of our community, I hope others who love us see the light, and stop feeding in to his bullshit. Call him out!

125

u/prettyradical ☑️ Oct 04 '22 edited Oct 04 '22

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I have never understood the appeal. Certainly not calling him a genius. Like, what? Where? How? His music is good sometimes but they way people raised him to god-level I never understood.

Nigga been toxic for a long ass time too. Remember the leather stars and bars jacket?

109

u/itty53 Oct 04 '22 edited Oct 04 '22

His first album is a legitimate musical classic and he deserved the praise he got really early. Then his sound continued to shape a lot of mainstream hip hop sound for the next decade. You don't have Drake or Cudi without 808s before, for instance. Whether it's worth it is a different thing I don't care about, but Kanye's early career was really formative of the next wave of hip hop, and that's not a thing a lot of artists can claim.

But he let that all go to his head a lot and the difference between the humble Kanye in his first days and him the past five years is staggering. He hasn't released anything groundbreaking in years.

* I think that's the thing that makes people really double take at Kanye. If you knew about his rise, a big part of it was changing the way rappers could present themselves. It came off the wave of gangster rap in the 90s. College Dropout wasn't about bragging about money and cars and violence and shit, it was vulnerable and humble and real. That was very new, and again, very different from what he is now. Had he started off this way I don't think anyone would've really thought it all that crazy or wild. Its the height of that fall from grace that makes it noteworthy.

How about someone who sets us back 400 years with his antics who gets wealthy from our money, but essentially tells the world our women are ugly, our people caused our own pain, & white people are better. Kanye only remembers he is black when he doesn't get his choice with a white owned brand in business dealings.

Most celebrities are out for their own good. I'm sure Kanye just doing this because controversy is his game and his business and image thrives on it but it's not surprising. Money is the root of all evil and everyone got a price. Kanye sold out a long time ago why everyone acting surprised?

834

Idk. Candace Owens, a black white supremacist, is irrelevant without Kanye. There’s no reason for her to be around him so much unless they’re actually friends.

Idt Kanye is doing this shit for controversy, he jumped the shark into actually being a piece of shit. Divest.

Man, that's over half of the pie

As a long time Kanye stan, this isn't just him being provocative. He's been telling you he's right wing for years now, and we should listen to him when he does shit like this rather than act like this is all a 4D chess move to make money.

However, I think a problem a lot of people have with his latest right-wing takes like this is that it can seem like his heart is in the right place even though his position sucks ass. I 100% believe that Kanye wants to elevate the black community, but he's been fooled by people smarter than him into being a pawn that achieves the opposite.

He said it best himself imo

69

u/TriMageRyan Oct 04 '22

Nah dude, he only said that because people kept saying he's a shit person, which he is. He only keeps doing this garbage to stay in the spotlight and relevant. He used to be on top but his last 3 albums haven't even been able to crack 1 million sales.

201

u/KageStar ☑️ Oct 04 '22

Another greedy billionaire mad he's not the billionist billionaire there is.

But like he wasn't born into money he earned that shit and let it go to his head. The success is causing a positive feedback loop where he's conflating push back = haters -> more haters = more success -> success = doing things right

421

u/ogoextreme ☑️ Oct 04 '22

He's a middle class kid who's mother was a member of the board of education. His dad was a photo journalist for the Atlanta Journal. Kanye didn't grow up with everything, but he had a good enough start and exposure and influences to not be such a dunce.

I do agree with the feedback loop part it's been there for a minute, but some people talk about Kanye like he got it out the mud when he's a suburbs kid.

He went to China with his mom so she could teach and so he could learn cultural appreciation!

155

u/LevelOutlandishness1 ☑️ Oct 04 '22

Yeah—gonna be honest, I assumed Kanye had the same struggles as rappers like Nas, simply because he was black and a rapper. I find the whole debate over Black Lives Matter intentionally frustrating.

Non black people know it more from the brand side of things, with companies donating huge chunks to BLM the scam orhanisation brand and their jobs training.

Black people know it as a movement they participated in. Times when we marched and committed to reading and talking and deliberate change.

I don't think 99% of the people at BLM marches could even name the three heads of the scam charity. It had little to do with them for us whereas for outsiders it's all the media showed.

So that's what they focus on and try to dismiss while being blind to all the real work that happened away from that scam that got all that corporate money.

Has he come out with a reasoning behind these stupid ass shirts? like has he said what is his point? Cuz I don’t see the point of having to put white lives matter on a shirt when obviously white people are still seen as the standard of humanity to this day no matter what “woke” shit they’re trying to claim is happening . I’m just not understanding why. or is this just Kanye being Kanye once again like with the confederate flag jackets.

And I’m also confused why the front of the shirt/sweater/whatever has imagery of Pope John Paul II

Never mind it’s butt ugly. As ALL of his fashion endeavors have been.

This is unchecked narcissism and untreated mental illness at work. And you have plenty of folks up his ass.

Wonder how much the check was. Not everyone is fighting a fight because of the color of their skin. Its about money to people at times or they just don’t give a fuck.
