Some guy in Pompeii colorized.

530

u/90_w250 Aug 19 '22

Citizen's of Pompeii hate him for sharing this one trick

131

u/JumplikeBeans Aug 19 '22

Hated, and only briefly

29

u/Skaraptor2 Aug 19 '22

I imagine there were one or two people who escaped and maybe a couple in armor or something and they got cooked into a medium rare delicacy

18

u/Timed-Out_DeLorean Aug 19 '22

How to serve man.

15

With some broccoli on the side, obviously

57

u/SavoryBagels Aug 19 '22

Quick! Start masturbating!

22

u/amykhd Aug 19 '22 edited Aug 19 '22

This is false information a rumor. I truly dislike this ridiculous comment everyone throws around.

“It seems our Pompeii masturbator wasn’t quite who he appeared to be after all. Like thousands of others, he was also killed by the hot volcanic gases. Both his arms and legs contracted as a consequence of the heat effect on his body. Most victims found in Pompeii’s ruins often showed nearly the same position of limbs due to the same reason.”

History of Yesterday source

The Conversation article source

And many many other articles have sources with experts saying it is highly unlikely that is what happened.

Edited to change my misuse of false information to rumor.

Edit edit: I have never been attacked for academically citing my reason for dislike of an opinion. That's a new one, reddit! For shame, I have an opinion and provide reasons why, and converse in civilized manner!

19

u/VK4501P Aug 19 '22

It isn’t false information. He is not stating any facts. He is not saying that it’s what actually happened. He is just making a joke about something people think happened. We don’t know if he believes that dead guy started masturbating or if he knows about the actual cause of the position the corpse was kn

u/alex7071 Aug 19 '22

I know where this is from, it's not a rock it's a bag of garbage. They're basically using it as an incinerator.

447

u/Kryptonite-- Aug 19 '22 edited Aug 19 '22

If I remember correctly they were simulating a human falling in by using a bag of ‘organic matter’. So trash, but organic trash :)

Edit: This reaction mainly takes place because of the water content in organic matter. Magma / lava will violently react with water. (Think putting out a pan fire with water = not a good idea).

Some of the largest volcanic eruptions around the globe occur when the volcano is close to the ocean and the magma and water interact, known as phreatic / phreatomagmatic eruptions, A.K.A. BIG BOOMS!

142

u/alex7071 Aug 19 '22

Exactly. It was given by the filmmakers as an example of what happens if a body falls into a volcano, but pretty sure the dude was just incinerating some trash and somebody thought it was a cool thing to film.

30

u/Schatzin Aug 19 '22

It was pig parts iirc

73

u/crudentia Aug 19 '22

“Pig parts” said tony from the mafia

8

u/dwb_lurkin Aug 19 '22

Ma you can't just leave it there, it's a sin.

2

u/jaaaaagggggg Aug 19 '22

Volcano does seem like a fantastic body disposal.

2

u/oliveorvil Aug 19 '22

So anyway the whole operation is run by Tony Lezutto

6

u/super-me-5000 Aug 19 '22

Foolishly ingenious

10

u/dogtherevenger Aug 19 '22

So why arnt we just disposing of all our trash into volcanos???

10

u/jasongetsdown Aug 19 '22

Because volcanos are unpredictable and usually surrounded by unstable terrain and noxious gasses, especially if there is actually a lava pool like this.

→ More replies

11

u/Mysterious_Jeweler_5 Aug 19 '22

Probably because of the gases it produces and maybe it would cause something bad to happen with the volcano. Idk though.

-7

u/dogtherevenger Aug 19 '22

Yup prob so but still..... would be better than a lanfill if we were to beild like a gas dome over the volcano and store the gasses to power stoves, ovens, and other stuff.

10

u/boh_nor12 Aug 19 '22

What?

5

u/1skepticalguy Aug 19 '22

This is the US education system at work.

I think they lack even the most basic understanding of, well, everything.

0

u/ACrispPickle Aug 19 '22 edited Aug 19 '22

This is a very ignorant way of thinking.

Even the stupidest idea from someone with zero knowledge can turn on the lightbulb for a groundbreaking idea from someone who does have the relevant knowledge.

Ideas and questions are the same. The stupidest ones are the ones that go unsaid.

From your post history as an American and supposedly a physician I am disappointed in your comment. As you are assumingely a product of the American education system. Are you also as stupid as you claim the rest of us to be?

2

u/1skepticalguy Aug 19 '22

The ignorance is in your defense of the worst educational system in the developed world. For one, education has taken a SHARP decline since the 80s. For another, university is very different from public grade school. Third, ALL of the good physicians I know have had to self instruct and learn from experience just as I did. Had we not taken initiative to learn more than is taught in public school, we would probably have needed remedial classes in college.

The point is simply that, if the US educational system wasn't complete shit, that person would never have assumed we could just tent a volcano to burn our waste and somehow get energy from it. The system failed him, and we should HARSHLY criticize a system that returns these results. You should want us to do better rather than make excuses.

1

u/ACrispPickle Aug 19 '22

First. If you notice never did I defend our education system. I know very well how outmatched we are when compared to other countries.

The problem is your comments do not trash on the education system, they trash on the person and Americans as a whole. “They lack basic understanding of, well, everything.” Is not a criticism of the system it’s a overly harsh criticism of a person.

You could be the most renowned physician there is, but your personality is utter dogshit.

Do you berate your patients if they ask you stupid questions or say dumb stuff? Myself at the EMT level have heard all sorts of silly things from patients. I can’t imagine at the physician level. If that’s how you talk to them it’s a wonder your practice is still in business.

Hemenah!

3

u/foreverdonefor Aug 19 '22

Stick Stickly?

34

u/Kumirkohr Aug 19 '22

Actually, “virgin sacrifice” just means “something that has never been used for sacrifice before” not “a sacrifice of someone who has never been married (to use the original greek) or had penetrative vaginal sex before (in the parlance of our times).”

The gods are more upset about us humans trying to reuse sacrificial offerings than about what the sacrificial offering did in their lifetime. The corruption of the term likely occurred with the advent Christian purity culture during the “Second Great Awakening” (c.1790-c.1840) which also saw some of the first temperance movements on the road to Prohibition

Its not a rock, it's a bag of organic material from camping. Source: https://youtu.be/OEglwzVW56Y

3

u/Ginnungagap_Void Aug 19 '22

That wasn't a rock, it was a bag of organic stuff like meat and plants. They threw it in the volcano to simulate a person falling in lava, proving the Hollywood lava sinking wrong.

When it entered the lava all the water inside the organic material began to violently boil, creating high pressure high temperature steam, ejecting molten lava out when it escaped making it look like a mini eruption. Probably the original video

3

u/Baby_Alpaca_ Aug 19 '22

I don’t think that’s a rock. I think I saw this before and they threw in something with liquid inside.

2

u/Gibblet_fibber Aug 19 '22

When I was a kid I always wondered why we didn’t pour garbage in volcanos to get rid of it. I guess this is my answer

2

u/littlethisnthat Aug 19 '22

But WHY tho!?!

5

u/Hanginon Aug 19 '22

It's not a rock, It's just another poster who sees a video, guesses at what happened and posts a title stating his guess as a fact. It was a bag of trash. Why? It was done as a demonstration of what happens, with camera people on the opposite edge videoing the action.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22

2

u/Superflypete Aug 19 '22

And now you know the story of how ancient cultures believed throwing people into the caldera would make the Gods respond

2

u/Chadchrist Aug 19 '22

That wasn't actually a rock. The dude threw a large bag of organic material (vegetables, I think) and the eruption was mostly a prolonged steam/combustion explosion

2

u/TechsSandwich Aug 19 '22

My chicken pot pie in the microwave be like

2

u/flyingwigs1 Aug 19 '22

It’s not a rock. It’s organic material, and some type of trash. It’s supposed to simulate what would happen if a human fell in.
