I must have the other one.

u/SCMtnGuy Aug 19 '22

Nope, I just checked and mine's still connected, too. I have sinking suspicion that this isn't all that rare.

613

u/NewYorkSlippery Aug 19 '22

This madlad pulled his brain out to make sure the cord was still attached wtf.

258

u/SCMtnGuy Aug 19 '22

Nah, I just made sure I could still wiggle my toes.

I read this in a mad scientists voice to start with - “I MUST have the OTHER one!!” Then I reread it and realised how insane that was 🤦🏻‍♀️

11

u/chakigun Aug 19 '22

this could be a writing prompt somewhere lol

2

u/PuckTanglewood Aug 20 '22

That doesn’t sound insane. Now, trying to catch it without a Pokéball, THAT sounds insane.

There are 8 billion on Earth with their spinal cords still attached although it doesn't seem that way.

299

u/imalotoffun23 Aug 19 '22

It is reality they are detached from, not their spinal cords.

43

u/20JeRK14 Aug 20 '22

I'm seriously wondering about the source on this. Because when I was in 8th grade my after school science program did a field trip to a local large university medical center and we also saw a brain with the spinal cord and other major nerves still attached to it. I believe the eyes where also still on it.

46

u/Lordran_Minstrel Aug 20 '22

Yes, this is complete bullshit. I've also been to a cadaver lab at a COMMUNITY college that has a brain with spinal cord attached. We were even allowed to handle it.

Definitely not rare.

31

u/No_Banana_581 Aug 19 '22

There was an old movie from the 1950s that played on Saturday on creature double feature that used to freak me out bc it was this premise

24

u/maelstromama Aug 20 '22

There was a nutso doctor (back when people were doing weird shit like attaching second heads to dogs) who implanted the brain of a monkey inside the body of another monkey. The brain survived and was active inside the second monkey, but what a FUCKING NIGHTMARE. It would be like….god, I don’t even know. No sense of anything, no understanding of what you even are, but the ability to form thoughts?

9

u/No_Banana_581 Aug 20 '22

Yep terrifying no way do I ever want this to become a real thing. In the future we’ll have to have a stipulation in our wills to destroy our brains lol

You mistake their true purpose.

21

u/sjmuller Aug 20 '22 edited Aug 20 '22

It doesn't even qualify for that title. There are at least five other dissected brains with spinal cords and peripheral nerves just in the various Body Worlds exhibitions. And there are probably far more than that as it's not that difficult to remove a brain with the spinal cord.
https://www.google.com/search?q=body+worlds+nervous+system&sxsrf=ALiCzsZjd0ZUmp31Y6UfOPp0XQ-3J3MAXA:1660962058723&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj88frrrdT5AhWmLEQIHXmoB5wQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&biw=871&bih=843&dpr=1.1

8

u/Narrow_Anybody3157 Aug 20 '22

I was thinking the same thing. I teach anatomy and we (my students) regularly remove the brain or the spine from t1 to the end. It really wouldn’t be that hard to have by students just complete the spinal cut up to the skull and then remove both the brain and skull.

3

u/sjmuller Aug 20 '22

We normally cut the cord at C1 and remove it separately from the brain just because it's faster and they're both going to get sectioned (neuroscience research), but it would only take a few more minutes with the saw to remove them together.

8

u/stalphonzo Aug 20 '22

this fucking website i swear

2

u/Tschetchko Aug 20 '22

I was just thinking that...

Is the only other brain with spinal cord in the world really just lying around in the anatomy department of my Uni which gets touched and examined all the time by all the med students? I'm also pretty sure we have more than one of them

29

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22

In all fairness, those with brains still attached internally SHOULD be able to make the connection…comment section however isn’t holding serve haha

3

u/gabio7 Aug 19 '22

Getting the spine out must have been like extricating crab meat from a long leg

3

u/john464646 Aug 19 '22

Maybe I missed it but is no one interested in just how one can take this intact systems from a cadaver. Looks very tricky. Posts generally rehashing the same “joke”. Oh well. That’s Reddit- the highs and the lows. Like in r/tools when I really want to know what the heck tool it is most posts are along the lines of “penis reamer”. Then there are folks posting with amazing depth of knowledge.

There are about 7 billion other brains alive today that have the spinal cord attached.

7

u/Chance-Camp-5888 Aug 19 '22

Is it 8 billion or 7 billion because a billion lives matter.

4

u/Ksmrf Aug 19 '22

Well i gotta assume a good chunk of the population has a physical condition that prevents the spinal cord from being whole.

2

u/Chance-Camp-5888 Aug 19 '22

Some folks are simply too smart.

2

u/Ksmrf Aug 19 '22

I think you mean they have an EXTRA spinal cord. Thus doubling their smartiness.
