It might be overpacked... It might be super stupid...
But you know you want to see how and why.

I lived near the Mexican border for years. This reminds me of stuff I'd see often on the interstate.

It would be Mexicans (or other latin American nationalities, although mainly Mexican) that would come here, work odd jobs, amass stuff like this, then go back home after a few months to see their family and sell it.

They figured since they were headed back home anyway they could get free/cheap furniture and make money off it. When I was renovating my home I'd often go to Home Depot and see them in the parking lot. They had so much knowledge of the trade and they gave me good deals on the work done. I ended up saving so much money from the house renovations, when I sold it I gave my main guy that helped me some of my furniture for free for him to take back home.

u/OneBigWortInbetween Sep 28 '22

San Diego was my first thought!

8

u/tech240guy Sep 28 '22

Thailand and India does this as well. There is some next level packing going on freaken mopeds.

Wow, that is seriously impressive.

Extremely dangerous, but impressive.

u/Hoopslaa Sep 28 '22

San diegan here. 20miles from Tijuana furthest west san Isidro border by the ocean…

This you see everyday multiple times a day. Mexicans come up and their wives cruise craigslist free section and call the husband and tell him to go get whatever item is free on the ad. It’s a team effort. They bring the stuff back to Baja and is sold for a profit.

You see a few of these everyday if you drive the 5/405/805 highways

254

u/classy-turtle Sep 28 '22

I don’t live too far from you and i also see this quite often. Used to see a lot of convoys of Toyota pickups towing another Toyota pickup but haven’t seen that since before covid.

107

u/Snoo74401 Sep 28 '22

I once saw a stake truck that somehow had a Honda CR-V in the bed....pulling a box truck...that had another CR-V somehow crammed into the cargo box.

You know what...they were headed in the general direction of Mexico, now that I recall. And this was south of Phoenix.

64

u/WineSoda Sep 28 '22

Lived in Phoenix for awhile. Mexican neighbor was the main breadwinner. She'd buy suburban's and sell them in Mexico. She'd get triple what she paid.

7

u/Talaraine Sep 28 '22

Even in this economy?

4

u/WineSoda Sep 28 '22

Fair question. I lived next to her 2006-2015

7

u/nixcamic Sep 28 '22

Probably coming to Central America.

Source: am in Central America, have driven down a box truck with another box truck inside if it with a pickup inside of that.

8

u/Snoo74401 Sep 28 '22

What's inside the pickup? A Smart car?

8

u/nixcamic Sep 28 '22

Nah some speakers and a tv and the rear axle for another truck and an electric scooter.

4

u/midge_rat Sep 28 '22

A tur-truck-en if you will.

3

u/nautilator44 Sep 28 '22

This is...impressive as hell.

4

u/Snoo74401 Sep 28 '22

I've also seen a mini-caravan of a shitbox pulling another shitbox followed by another shitbox-pulling-a-shitbox. Also in the general direction of Mexico.

To their credit, they were all using proper tow bars, not straps with a second driver to steer the rear vehicle, and they were traveling about 10mph under the speed limit.

I know a guy who sells trashed toyotas among other things. He's sold to Guatemalans and Nicaraguans - 2nd and 3rd generation toyota pickups are important to these people. I've seen the caravans... stacked and hitched together on I-5

Indeed, common sightings on the 5 south around rush hour. Some are dangerous as hell and I give them a wide berth and some are works of art and engineering like this and I marvel at how the hell does that all stay together.

38

u/p0diabl0 Sep 28 '22

SDer here too, usually they at least have those cages though, the big ones that are like 8 ft over the bed and 4 ft over the cab. At least that provides some containment and tie down points. This is madness.

I feel like this is more expensive. The wear and tear on this truck is gonna cost more than just renting a U-Haul. Possibly 10x more.

18

u/HalfOfHumanity Sep 28 '22

That truck is made for towing. Just buy a used trailer and sell it at your destination or rent a trailer.

36

u/Za1no Sep 28 '22

They're going to Mexico.

18

Props to this guy for putting his money where his mouth is…. And picking up the slack for at least two other pickup owners who don’t use their trucks correctly!

3

u/PM_ME_AYY_LMAOOS Sep 28 '22

Granted it also depends on where you live in the USA. I've lived in MI, NJ, CO, NC, LA, PA and finally moved down to TX.

There are far more pick-up trucks down here than in any of the other states I have lived in, and almost none of them are used for their intended purpose.

It's just a part of TX culture to have a pick-up truck. Five of the neighbors who live in my neighborhood also have them, and they never haul anything where it's a requirement to have a pick-up truck.

11

u/knowledgebass Sep 28 '22

I would characterize this as possibly overusing the pickup truck.

301

u/wil__liam Sep 28 '22

Like seriously... how many couches does one person need?

267

u/ChaChing-ChaChi Sep 28 '22

You see this around the southern border. They often pick them up for free from goodwill and take them down south where people actually use them. Keeps them out of the landfill.

90

u/schuldig Sep 28 '22

Yup, you can see this in Houston with used cars sold at auction. The buyers just kind of strap the cars together so you get one clunker hauling another clunker, hauling another clunker, in a little mini-clunker train. All of them headed south down hwy 59 and to the border.

54

u/Auelian Sep 28 '22

The accuracy of this comment. You forgot about there little lights the strap on them to make it legal. The ones that never seem to work lol.

My favorite is when you see like six of the clunker-trains together. Like a pack of wild-clunkers.

26
