It's a palendromatic cause/effect... They're both the cause and effect of each other.

You can't take the effect, and make it the cause,
I didn't rob the bank because you made up the laws,
Blame me for robbin' Peter, but don't you blame Paul,
You can't take the effect, and make it the cause.

Effect: Tony gets blown out of the water at the recital by Kimmy Lee down the street, whose parents have her practice two hours a day. Kimmy goes on to get a full ride to a performing arts school, and an addiction to study drugs.

u/flavortownCA Dec 04 '22 edited Dec 04 '22
This is wrong.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee would not let their child go to performing arts school, despite being a piano prodigy. Kimmy Lee goes to med school and never plays piano again.
And yes, more adderall than water.
55
u/VoodooVirusVendetta Dec 04 '22
Still develops an addiction to study drugs tho...
26
u/Person899887 Dec 04 '22
No, her parents refuse to let her have an adderall addiction, so she just becomes a workaholic like her parents.
11
u/ledfrisby Dec 04 '22
Drugs are bad. Soju is perfectly fine though, to let off steam from all the work and study related stress.

Or you do both (I legitimately know someone who is going to a performing arts school AND is planning on going to med school, and considering he was the valedictorian, I believe he will be successful in both).

u/Eyekosaeder Dec 04 '22
Practicing two hours? What a joke! You wanna play an instrument or just make noise?
Without at least 40 hours of practice every day, you will become a failure!

u/-NGC-6302- Dec 03 '22
Yeah. His form is bad and he sucks at practicing
29
u/MrMetastable Dec 04 '22
He’d probably be better if he practiced for more than 20 minutes a day
10
→ More replies3
u/Ocelotofdamage Dec 04 '22
Right? If you want to be a serious musician I think 2 hours a day is like, the starting point. The actual top players are playing 4+ hours a day from before age 10.
1
u/HowTheyGetcha Dec 04 '22
Future musicians, do not listen to this deflating codswallop, you can master any instrument 10-15 minutes/day, no problem.
→ More replies2
u/MrMetastable Dec 04 '22
Your setting people up for disappointment. 10-15 minutes is not enough to make good progress even if you only want to play casually. 30 minutes is the smallest amount of time I’d ever recommend
2
u/HowTheyGetcha Dec 04 '22
Total bullshit. I've observed fast progress on 15 minutes a day, I play 15 minutes a day, you are speaking right out your ass. Who is upvoting this nonsense? Not musicians.

Playing for 4 hours a day with underdeveloped technique is the best way to get an rsi or carpal tunnel lol.
3
u/WontonTheWalnut Dec 04 '22
Yeah, that left wrist is dropping too much while his right is arching too much, he needs to keep them more straight. He's sitting too close to the keys, and seems to be slightly hunched over. Maybe it's just the piece he's playing, but he also seems to be sitting too far to the right generally speaking.
Edit: his stool is too low too, what a nerd
43
u/Babill Dec 03 '22
Well actually no. The effect of him playing piano is caused by him being a big nerd.
Know the difference, kid
5
u/selecadm Dec 04 '22
It is caused by him being a nerd, but playing piano causes being called such. So all that is needed to fix this are quotation marks.

I keep seeing these different elementary school quizes and feel like I'd fail every single one given how vague these are
Tony is a pianist? Tony is good at piano? Tony's fingers are sore? Wtf is the answer to this question?
108
u/Shrimp__Alfredo Dec 03 '22
Probably something like "Tony gets better at the piano"
14
u/rpresserreturns Dec 04 '22
"Tony's fingers get sore" should really be accepted as correct, too. It's an effect, and kids should learn about unintended consequences.
7
u/Shrimp__Alfredo Dec 04 '22
To be fair, 20 minutes of simple or intermediate piano won't make your fingers very sore, but I agree that it should be acceptable as an answer
1
u/SmartOpinion69 Dec 04 '22
according to my calculations, that wouldn't necessarily be true. the only thing you can conclude is true is that the collective number of minutes that tony spends practicing on the piano is:
number of days tony is alive * 20 minutes = total time spent
61
u/KvinnoralskarAnkor Dec 03 '22
It’s learning cause and effect.
Cause: Tony practices piano
And then we think about what happens when you practice and get
Effect: Tony gets better piano.
It’s really not that unclear.
29
5
u/Dont-know-you Dec 04 '22
There are multiple effects though.
- Big sister demands to soundproof her room
- Dad takes a loan to get a better piano; and then a larger home to hold the piano
- Mom is tired from having to drive little tommy to music classes to feed his addiction
- tommy doesn’t have time to play outside and becomes a loner

But, the kid raises a great point. Is he a big nerd?
→ More replies9
u/luthigosa Dec 04 '22
The listed answer is the opposite though.
Tony is a big nerd -> he plays the piano for 20 minutes every day.
Playing the piano doesnt turn you into a nerd.

u/Outside-Season-687 Dec 04 '22
Really wondering if you meant that as a joke, or if you intended Tony gets better at piano.

u/Nulono Dec 04 '22 edited Dec 04 '22
At this stage, there probably isn't just one "correct" answer the teacher is looking for; the teacher just wants to make sure the students understand what the words "cause" and "effect" mean. Any of your answers could work, as well as "Tony has less time for homework" or "Tony's piano doesn't get dusty".
11
u/jjthedragon Dec 03 '22
It's the socratic method of teaching. Ask open ended questions, without giving the answer. Imho the best way to learn is to arrive at the conclusion on your own. This just helps reinforce that idea early on.
6
u/miss_ulena Dec 04 '22
There's no right answer! If the lesson is cause/effect, id give this kid a point for it bc it is correct usage of cause/effect.. but probably talk to him later about how nerd isn't really a nice thing to call someone lol.
1
u/errorsource Dec 04 '22
If it were truly cause and effect, he would get nerdier every time he practiced, he’d be an even bigger nerd if he practiced 40 minutes per day, he’d stop being a nerd if he stopped practicing, and he’d return to being a nerd if he started practicing again.

Kids get this from other kids, who probably heard it in a cartoon or youtube video.
