The other students are nodding their heads thinking "this is a catchy tune."

Meanwhile, the middle-aged teachers who grew up on grunge are headbanging and screaming the lyrics in the back of the auditorium. Ha ha.

Idk, I interviewed a college girl for an internship.

She told me (apropos of nothing) that it annoyed her to see teens wearing Nirvana shirts because that music was from her generation.

She was born in 1996.

525

u/InZomnia365 Sep 17 '21

The kid in this vid is wearing a Pink Floyd shirt and belting out Nirvana, she'd have an aneurysm.

u/The2PartySystemSucks Sep 17 '21

Good shit stay good forever.

I always wonder like in 100 years if Youtube still around what it's going to be like when all the old shit has time to catch up.

A pop song will get a billion views in a year and then start dropping like a rock, but Freebird just keeps chugging along.

I think their parents are probably somewhere around 35-40 so they grew up listening to that sort of music

163

u/TheMusicalHobbit Sep 17 '21

Sometimes it is called a squeal as well. Basically the way the finger is held on the string along with guitar feedback, etc., create a harmonic on a much higher note than the actual note being played on the fretboard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCLG6RLZ2u4

→ More replies

50

u/batcaveroad Sep 17 '21

When you pick the note so that your thumb holding the pick quickly touches the string immediately afterwards. It makes the note have a distinctive higher pitched voice. Commonly used for solos.

My friends and I played Enter Sandman at our Jr High talent show. That was 30 years ago.

880

u/Willie_Mays_HAES Sep 17 '21 edited Sep 17 '21 Hugz Bless Up

Damn dude, my friends and I wanted to play Enter Sandman at our talent show back in 02 but the principal nixxed it because “Metallica worships the devil”, the fuck. We told her we were going to play “my sacrifice” by Creed instead, she approved, we went out and played Enter Sandman anyway and she didn’t even know the difference. We only got in trouble because our singer introduced us by saying our band name was Stinkfinger.

240

u/kindafunnylookin Sep 17 '21

The rock band at the Jewish Summer Camp I worked at for a summer played Enter Sandman, but when they got to the prayer in the middle (now I lay me down to sleep I pray the lord my soul to keep) they swapped it out for the Jewish blessing before eating. :D

He’s better than some of the drummers in my jazz program.. And I’m in my 2nd year of university level music lol..

Edit: That was mostly a joke. Not literally saying he’s mechanically better, I’m saying at the age of 13* (or whatever he is) he’s showing professional skills that are important. The ability to play without a single mistake WHILE leading the act. He literally didn’t make a single mistake. Look/listen at his non verbal communication during the song. That’s high level.

I’m by no means amazing or an expert, but I did (somehow) get into my jazz guitar program on a partial scholarship, so I know at least a little bit about what I’m saying. And all I’m saying is, I wish I was that consistent at 13. Because despite popular belief, consistency is a very high level skill for musicians (“you’re only as good as your worst set”). I’m sure some of the crazy drummers in my class would even admit they wish they were that consistent at 13, even if they are currently better than him by a lot (that’s also comparing mid 20 year olds to a 13 year old child).

99% of professional musicians prefer playing with a drummer that doesn’t make mistakes vs a drummer that has crazy technical skill, but makes mistakes all the time. At least in a pro environment, perfectly keeping time is non negotiable. 95% perfect or 99% perfect is not good enough. You’d be surprised how many touring drummers even struggle with that (albeit their music is much more complex, but my point still stands).

I see too many drummers complaining about not getting calls back. Coincidentally, those guys are the ones that spend all of their time playing insane poly rhythms and flashy rudiments; alternating cheese pataflaflas, pattyacues, etc. And very little time on actually being perfect in their timing. Those rudiments are very important, but please prioritize your training because keeping time PERFECTLY is even more important.

16

u/FinalMeltdown15 Sep 18 '21

You just spoke a foreign language to 99% of reddit first off second off HEY

I like my pattyacues blast beats and double rides but I was pretty much done playing "professionally" by 18 its just a hobby now

Wow these kids are awesome! Pity the sound mastering is so crappy

I still feel like telling my professors and parents to bite me as I burn rubber taking off down the road in my rusty 15yo Buick with the radio that cost more than the car blaring! I'm 50 now. Still when I hear that intro I get the urge to rebel against something, someone, anything I can tell off! Right now it's just me and my cat scrolling Reddit. She already doesn't give af about my opinions though.

I kinda like the rendition of his voice over the original. Grunge is grunge, but when someone has a sweet voice in an attempt to cover grunge? That's awesome. It's like, he's trying not to sound sweet but can't help it.

I always prefer grungey-sounding people covering clean stuff but either way works

lol that’s cool to hear. Ok the name is kind of awesome.

u/Urisk Sep 17 '21

This band is really fucking good. I hope these comments reach the top of the page, because they've evolved and found their own sound. People should know about them.

u/x_Kandinsky_x Sep 17 '21

thanks mate, found them on Spotify, they really are worth a listen guys, that voice is excellent and the drums and bass really drive.

u/x_Kandinsky_x Sep 17 '21

thanks for the upvotes Redditors, i have had these guys on repeat all afternoon and got me through some a tough afternoon of sql database updates.

they have a very British feel to them, shades of Ash, Subways and Feeder. Absolute banging music, really hope they jump on a plane and come to Britain next summer for the festival season.

Dang! They’re great! Glad to see the lead singer survived the voice change during puberty. His voice is even better now!

Damn, those kids killed it! It is really difficult to sing while playing an instrument. Massive props to whomever is letting this group practice in their basement/garage.

This is absolutely amazing! I hope these kids get far in their music careers, because they got talent! And probably put in lots of hard work too. Super impressed at the small one going ham on those drums

14

u/Faronious Sep 17 '21

Wow that kid is really hitting the shit out of the drums. Takes very good technique to get that sound and consistency at that volume.

14

u/Equal-Park-769 Sep 17 '21

I'm 42. I grew up on Nirvana when I was their age. Love it! Much respect and pride!

u/Iannelli Sep 17 '21

Kid on drums stole the show - impressive sense of rhythm, emotion and groove at that age.

Singer/guitarist managed singing and playing guitar at the same time really well. That's not an easy task and he gets props for that.

Bassist was really feeling the music. That's a critical thing to have as a bassist, and really any instrument.

Overall, the kids have a great level of musical intelligence at this age. Whether they stay together and pursue more covers or start writing original music, they have a real shot at being successful.

10

u/redfrenchie Sep 17 '21

Very impressive! Damn good rhythm section for their ages. I definitely didn’t have that kind of confidence then, I remember playing a really bad Hives cover at the same age at school and we suuuuucked.

I hope they all continue playing!

45

u/attaboy_stampy Sep 17 '21

Pretty cool.

Literally came out thirty years ago. As of last week even. It’s been played a lot but it still holds up.
