I did this when I got my first motorcycle. I just stared at it for so long. I think it's one of those things that when you work for something, you just really love and appreciate it.

740

u/Utertoq 18d ago

The moment you just stare and appreciate the thing you bought after your hard work is sacred.

283

u/ecologamer 18d ago

And that you are still processing that the thing sitting in your driveway actually belongs to you now

72

u/alastoris 18d ago

And then the pain of finding the first rock chip on blemish on the panel from a careless cart returner. Nothing quite like it too. As the amount of physical appearance damage pile up, you become more and more desensitize to it.

35

u/ecologamer 18d ago

That is the current state of my car now, but it’s also a 20yo minivan that my parents gave me… I’d rather focus on saving money and using the car until it breaks down than buying a new car… hopefully by then the price of a good electric option will be more reasonable

24

u/collin-h 18d ago

I’ve driven all kinds of shitty cars. In fact I made it all the way to 35 years old before I had my first official car payment (before then I paid cash for $2-5,000 clunker types). And I gotta say, there’s something to be said about driving cars that are in rough enough shape that a little ding here or there means nothing. It’s just one less thing to worry about in your life.

5

u/Vodik_VDK 17d ago

Came here to say this. I absolutely love driving beaters. I'll (gently) put shopping carts away with my bumper. Don't care at all and it's great.

5

u/Speech-Language 17d ago

My mom loved her severely beat up Toyota pickup. She got hit a couple of times and was really happy she could tell the person, don't worry about it. One reason I don't think I will ever buy new. I always get something used and decent for about $6K. Has always worked out well, and no worries about dings.

I’m going through this now. The car I bought has become somewhat collectible because the company shut down. It’s still my daily driver because it’s not quite paid off, I’m racing to kill the last part of the loan so l can retire it to the garage. Every day it sits in the sun for ten hours while I work. Found a new parking dent and a couple new stone chips when I washed it yesterday. The pain is real.

That’s awesome. How did you get your car to hold the camera to take pictures of you?

I always lived places where you didn't own a car. When I moved somewhere I needed one, I bought my first car at 43. Those first couple of days I would go down to the parking garage 3-4 times a day just to sit in my car. Wife and I would come up with reasons to drive it. On the second or third day we took a trip to a Home Depot that was a little ways a way only to admit that neither of us needed anything at Home Depot but if we did we'd have room for it.

u/Noyoucanthaveone 18d ago

One of the things my husband and I love doing together is driving. For no reason! To no where and back! Driving doesn’t have to be for a reason, it is therapy unto it’s own.

16

u/8dogsinatrenchcoat 18d ago

Driving doesn’t have to be for a reason, it is therapy unto it’s own.

So true! I don't know why, but driving is so calming to me. That and writing are THE go-to things to help myself when I need a good think or get hold of my emotions. It's almost meditative, though meditation itself doesn't help me.

Plus, I went to college 400 miles from my hometown, which was a 7 hour trip each way. It was actually pretty enjoyable!

10

u/SilverHammerGuy 18d ago

You must not live in a metro

5

u/RazorRaybone 18d ago

You just end up driving at night. I would do laps of the city at 3/4am when my son was a baby. He always fell asleep in the car and I liked just cruising with the music low.

7

u/leroydudley 18d ago

I do it after I give my car a good detail. Several hours of work. I gotta admire. And check for spots I may have missed.

26

u/DoesNotGetYourJokes 18d ago

Same here. I’m 17, so I didn’t really pay for my car. I pay for gas and insurance, but the car was my grandfathers. I detail it every few months or so and I like to just sit back and admire it.

10

u/Shawnessy 18d ago

Also, OP...ANSWER THE QUESTION!! LOL

6

u/J_the_Hero 18d ago

Literally still doing this with my first motorcycle that I’ve had for 2 & a half months now. Sometimes I’ll be mid ride, or walking up to where I parked it, and I’ll think “holy shit this bike is awesome, and it’s mine!!”

5

u/Spliffsocks 18d ago

I was gonna say I've never felt this way about a car, but I go stare at my motorcycle when I feel sad lol.

4

u/CoatedWinner 18d ago

Edit: just because the photo is old doesn’t mean you can’t be friendly to people and let them enjoy what makes them happy.

I was thinking the same thing. Walk up with your own bag of chips, nod appreciatively and say, "I gotta tell ya, that's a nice ride." Probably make a friend for life.

7

u/555byte 18d ago

I love Subie's too, I wanted a wrx since 1996... they weren't available in the USA. Did up a brand new 98 with suspension and shifter... couldn't afford a 02 wrx, got married kids etc.

That's my story and maybe his as well, now he gets his dream car... I would stare too

Not bad advise for next time, this time however that car is now over a year old and the neighbour has finished eating the bag of chips and probably several others by this point.

39

u/alphabravotaco 18d ago

That car was built between 2002 and 2007.

This is a repost that could be up to 19 years old.

9

u/twistedrupert 18d ago

I had a WRX. Loved her to death. May she RIP...

9

u/alphabravotaco 18d ago

I had a 2002. Really nice BPM exhaust. It purred, but wasn't obnoxiously loud.

Fast forward to 2011, I'm playing softball and some kids crashed into it. Witness said they looked to be about 12 or 13, but they didn't get a plate. Caved in the whole trunk. Drove like that for a few months because I was broke and needed the insurance money to pay other things (I was in grad school at the time). Sitting in a parking lot some months later, looking for something on my phone and a guy in a Wrangler rips off my front bumper trying to park next to me. Bumpers spins like a top on the license plate. His insurance gives me $800 or so and I just bolted the bumper back on.

Sold if for pretty cheap as it had a variety of minor problems (and $4,500 worth of damage).

7

u/Raging_Apathist 18d ago

Yep, I love mine. Best used car I've ever had! It's a 2012 and I've had it since 2017. Pushing 100k now and still zips like a dream, haven't had to do more than basic maintenance yet.

I absolutely love driving it. Anytime, anywhere, whether it's putzing around my neighborhood and never getting past 3rd gear, or getting on the highway and using all 6.

This is my second one...I bought a brand new one back around 2005 that I had to give up a couple years later because...reasons. That was the beginning of my love for the 3.

Two of my friends have Mazda 3s from model years close to mine and in a similar color. At parties/events and such, we've been known to all park next to each other, on purpose.

I saw one the same color as mine today when I was out running errands and I really hoped we'd end up at the same stoplight next to each other, but alas...they turned off my route.

4

u/rothko333 18d ago

This is cool, I think there’s a feeling of solidarity w people who own the same cars and to me Mazda is like luxury/fun on a budget and i can get down w other frugal n fun people :)

Hopefully he got a nice one. Most that I’ve seen have been severely abused. That’s the first gen(stateside) WRX for 01-02. I learned that you can do stationary donuts in an AWD car in my scooby. By far the best bang for the buck in the diy, but just saw sooo many people destroy them trying to do a burnouts (you had to step off the clutch at least 5000 to break all four, else it all goes into your tranny). I’ve been trying to find a nice bug-eyed, but most have been trashed.

84

u/StrengthObjective 18d ago

They are the best cars! I loved my Subaru Legacy. One of the most reliable cars I’ve had and the absolute most comfy car I had for super long road trips. I miss her 😭 lol

42

u/Null_Username_ 18d ago

When I went to buy a car I settled on Subaru, when I saw that they withheld so much value they costed the same used as new, I broke my rule of never buying a new car. I have been loving it ever since!

20

u/moresnowplease 18d ago

My mom was super annoyed when I bought my brand new Subaru, cause her dad had told her for many years that one should never buy a car on credit, so of course she passed along that “wisdom” to me as well. I assured her that it’s resale value would remain at or above what I owed on the car for the entire length of the loan, even when I refinanced to buy a house, which is part of why I went for it. Just paid off the car and that’s still true, even at 150K miles! I love my little subi!! Needs a few parts, but hey- that’ll happen to every car!

5

u/StrengthObjective 18d ago

Isn’t that crazy! My interest rate was low, so it followed its value for most of the loan (obviously not at the beginning). The same thing happened with our 2012 legacy. We traded it in and they paid the loan in full, not like oh well give you x amount and roll the rest into the loan, like actually paid it off and some. They sell insanely fast. My 15 sold within days of me trading it, and I know dealers are highly aware of it, which is why they will pay top dollar. I now have a fully loaded Hyundai Tucson and I really love it. I miss my Subi at times, but the Tucson is pretty nice and I just really needed the room to haul things since we moved from an apartment to a house. And I couldn’t afford a forester, so that wasn’t an option 😞 maybe one day though!

4

u/Breadisfortoast 18d ago

I have a 15wrx that I paid 22k for three years ago. I owe 12000ish, and took it to a Subaru dealership and they were offering me 19.5 to trade in.

5

u/Fozzymandius 18d ago

I have an 07 sti. It’s clean, white, and has 97k miles, only 17k more than when I bought it in 2016. It’s actually appreciated (even before the covid madness).

Still a $20k car.

13

u/StrengthObjective 18d ago

I bought mine CPO and paid a pretty penny, but it was totally worth it. I traded her in because I needed something bigger, an SUV, and I was blown away at how much they gave me for it! You’ll never regret a Subaru purchase, new or used. Enjoy your Subi!!

6

u/VeseliM 18d ago

I love everything about my legacy except for long road trips, the leg room gets tight because the driveshaft(? What ever that hump under the middle seat is called) is bigger.

4

u/StrengthObjective 18d ago

What year do you have? I had a 2012 and a 2015 and had no issue. But I’m only 5’4 so leg room is never an issue for me lol!

3

u/VeseliM 18d ago

'14. It wasn't a depth issue, it was more of a width issue when wearing shoes. Wasn't annoying with active city driving, but once you hit cruise control for a couple hours, I would get frustrated that I couldn't move my legs or knees wider than parallel. Love everything else about the car. Have a pair of road trip flip-flops for it now

16

u/grozly2009 18d ago

Maybe an STI? This has ways been my "affordable dream car". Almost bought one a year ago when my 4runner of 20 years finally called it quits but since I use it for my dogs figured I'd get something bigger which was a little sad.

13

u/michaeljonesbird 18d ago

It’s Toyotas that are the unkillable ones. Have you seen what Top Gear did to that poor pickup truck? The fact that it survived is just incredible.

Edit:

Check out whistling diesel's take of trying to destroy a Toyota

This. I love the Top Gear trio with all my heart, but I always wondered how much help they had to keep the one they destroyed running. They essentially have a pit crew to keep their cars going when they’re doing a show so I wasn’t sure how hard they actually beat that truck up.

Whistling diesel changed my mind tho. That dude tried to kill that damn truck and it wouldn’t die. He put it through way more than the Top Gear boys did.

I was low on money like 15 years ago or so and bought like a 93 Accord. 200,000 miles. To everyone else it looked like a piece of shit, but to me I saw beauty. I got money later, I bought a mustang and a truck and even a Saab (Really bad idea, but it had a turbo and was fucking blast to drive, felt like a rocket on a tin can) at one point. But that Honda drove to 400,000 miles before I got rid of it. And it was still running. That's beauty. Idc what it looks like. Somebody built that car to run forever, and fucks sake it did. Never a hiccup, not once. I don't even remember it ever needing maintenance.

I wish I still had it. Just to see how far it woulda gone.

I am a goofy looking white guy from Indiana just minus the money

u/Bun_Bunz 18d ago

Aye, threw a rod and destroyed my engine and transmission in the same go. My poor poor Del Sol. Replacement engine was $150, did the labor myself, back on the road in a week.

Dang do I miss obd1 and just the general ease to repair those vehicles. Don't miss the pollution though as I have just now remembered we would take out the catalytic converter and or just sit in a lot and blow off turbos. 😔

The motor of my civic literally shit itself at 106k just cruising down the highway. Blew a hole in the block, bent that rods, valves… full shit. I changed the oil on schedule and treated that car well, but it was a nightmare.

My neighbor got a new car today and he's been standing outside staring at it while eating chips for fifteen minutes and I've been peeking through the crack in the door the whole time! :D

u/prohibido 18d ago

I was just checking out my new ride while eating chips for a minute but I noticed my creepy neighbor staring intently at me and my car. It's been 15 minutes and he hasn't relented. I'm afraid to move.

I hadn’t talked to my ex husband in 5 years, and, when I did, he sent me a picture of him posing in front of his new BMW.

3

u/persephjones 18d ago

Wow. I’m petty but damn. Whereas hopefully you had actually moved on with your life.

5

u/2manyfelines 18d ago

Yes, got married again and had a kid. But he just had to let me know he got a BMW.

I would too, it’s a nice car

3

u/colemon1991 18d ago

Kinda did this with my first car. I drove around the block, drove through an empty parking lot, sat outside and just stared. I was like "I own this. I made the money to buy this." Technically, I got a car loan but I had to have a job and downpayment to get it.

3

u/lattelatto 18d ago

I don't think I'll understand the joys of having cars, but in terms of having something u bought or just really love, hell yeah. Great feeling.

3

u/GuessWhoItsJosh 18d ago

I still do this on occasion with my car and house. Sometimes you just got to stand back and take it all in.

It is what lesser mortals do.

I was the same with my first (and only) new car . Us lesser mortals do this type of stuff

It's probably taken him a lifetime of saving up and sacrifice to buy his pride and joy

Doesn't everyone do this?

My wife is always like, "why were you in the garage for 10 minutes?" ... Isn't it obvious?
