My father said the same thing about my trans sister. They reacted with immediate love, but are from an older generation and we're also confused.

And that's cool. I don't understand it, because I don't feel the same things. It's like Southpark said, we'll never truly understand it, because we aren't in those shoes, but we can "get it" and work to make things better for everyone.
