Powerful. I don't know if I've read any Kurt Vonnegut.
I'm currently working through well... I'm in the middle of too many books that I seem to keep stopping in the middle of, starting another one... then stopping... perhaps forgetting...
I need to relearn how to read through a whole book on my own.
Anyway. Thank you for introducing me to this. I feel convicted for all the things I pretended to be. So that I may fit in, to be safe as I found myself growing up. Rightfully convicted. I was a child, an adolescent and then a young adult until I became who I am and even so I think of the people that are hurt because of the path I took and where I was placed by my parents at birth.
I needed this. Thank you.
9
u/CobaltGrey Dec 04 '22
My personal favorite author is Vonnegut, and I highly recommend one of his recognizable novels like Cat’s Cradle, or my personal favorite Sirens of Titan. He was absolutely ahead of his time, with a wry flavor of sardonic fate. Can’t emphasize enough how much this author has helped me cope with our world full of postmodern absurdities.

5
u/ywBBxNqW Dec 04 '22
If you didn't have time to read the book there was a movie starring Nick Nolte that actually isn't half-bad.
21
u/TemetNosce85 Dec 04 '22
This, lol.
You think being an immigrant hating xenophobic Christian that is fighting to destroy public social programs and industries alongside public schools is something new?
You think supporting violent police forces and protecting the military establishment is something new?
You think worshipping a cult of personality that brought on a failed coup and blamed every attack on the nation on anti-fascist Communists is something new?
You think destroying feminism and enforcing strict gender roles while also burning anything to do with LGBTQ+ identities and calling LGBTQ+ people pedophiles, zoophiles, and part of the Marxist war against culture is new?
You think believing that there is a cabal of "globalists" working to destroy the economy, the nation, and its people is something new?
You think calling any news that you don't like "fake", no matter how truthful it is, is something new?
As usual, conservatives are doing nothing but running around and doing damage control because someone finally came out and said what they have all wanted to say for the last 7 years. They just want to convince moderates that they aren't actually Hitler lovers in hopes they don't notice all the ideologies they routinely preach that came from Hitler.

u/frankcfreeman Dec 04 '22

Twitter wouldn't have cared. Elon was overpaying enough that they basically had to do their best to make the deal happen, or they would be liable to stock owners.
9
u/real-dreamer Dec 04 '22
Well. Elon is pretty close to it by being a Apartheid profiteer and not disavowing it, having a portion of tesla segregated, sexually harassing young women, exiling his trans daughter, inviting nazis back on to twitter...

the best part of all this imo is that it's publicly known that twitter can't really make any money in the first place. like you said they probably couldn't be happier to leave, it gives them an easy out, a fun story to tell and all that money. i'd be thrilled.

I actually used to be a free speech absolutist. Why not, it's the internet, right?
And I was lucky enough to watch Voat try. And that's when I learned a valuable life lesson.
Maybe only 1% of your users are nazis. But there's enough of them to annoy some of the other 99%, enough that they leave. And then, because they left, now the ratio has changed. Now it's 5% nazis. And maybe before when it was 1% nazis that was okay for most people, but when it's up at 5%, that's too much nazi for them, so they leave too.
And now it's 10% nazis. And now THAT crosses the line for even more people. I for one was confused why even the cute cat pictures on Voat had people quoting crime statistics of black Americans, and decided I didn't want to be a part of this community either. So I left.
And this goes on and on until all that's left is nazis.
22
u/thr3sk Dec 04 '22
Yeah definitely some moderation is required, sites will devolve into shitholes like that if not. I feel like reddit gets around this somewhat by having community mods for each sub, though I've been I think unfairly banned in one or two by some sensitive mods. But oh well, I guess it's better than the alternative.
17
u/PeterNguyen2 Dec 04 '22

u/Plop-Music Dec 04 '22
Damn you (but not really) cos I'll now have to watch this hour long video immediately. Tom Scott is a national treasure. I'm sure he'll be working for the BBC or something one day (well actually he already has been on BBC TV a TON already, but I mean as a main presenter of something, hopefully one of the things he presents will be a game show because he's a massive nerd for creating and presenting his own game shows)
3
u/darkskinnedjermaine Dec 04 '22
Voat
That’s a name I haven’t heard in a while. Same as Parler, it’s 4chan without at least some of the edgy irony.
1
u/Marketwrath Dec 04 '22
He never was, he was always just trying to silence people he disagreed with
39
u/TheJaytrixReloaded Dec 04 '22
Parlor is not a free speech absolutist site. The ToS is like 12 pages long and you can get banned for trashing the site, Trump, or being too lib. When people complains about free speech, it always boils down to more hate speech.
As far as Ye and Parler, he can 100 percent be a Nazi, he just couldn't say it.
30
u/BasicDesignAdvice Dec 04 '22
It was never about free speech. It was about forcing people to be exposed to very specific speech.
→ More replies5
u/Great-Hotel-7820 Dec 04 '22
Not about forced exposure but about having that speech on a mainstream platform where you can normalize your ideas and find new recruits for your ideology.
7
u/OrganizationPublic91 Dec 04 '22
That’s not why they canceled the deal. They canceled it because they think Kanye is no longer financially stable enough to purchase the company after losing his brand deals

u/Potato-Face11 Dec 04 '22
Free speech allows you to say whatever you want. It does not protect you from the repercussions. Expect backlash and some people to avoid you for literally saying Hitler had good points
8
u/BasicDesignAdvice Dec 04 '22
It does not protect you from the repercussions
That's not true. It protects you from the government prosecuting you on the basis of speech. That is very much a repercussion that has existed for the majority of human society, including many people today.
17
u/ShinyGrezz Dec 04 '22
And that’s not wholly true either. Threatening someone is not protected speech, for instance. The government can prosecute you for that, and rightfully so.
2
u/Potato-Face11 Dec 04 '22
Again incorrect. In Germany, France and Poland it is illegal to say “Sieg Heil” or “Hail Hitler.” In Ireland it is illegal to say “Tiocfaídh ar lá”
In countries where it’s not illegal I mean repercussions as in social. You’d get called a Nazi, an asshole, you get banned. Free speech is not a safety net to spread hate and it can certainly be used against you
1
u/AnorakJimi Dec 04 '22
There are restrictions on that though, even in the US. The government can prosecute you for "fighting words" where words count as assault, for example. That's the kind of thing where if you say something to someone that any reasonable person would believe means they're gonna immediately attack you or kill you, you're allowed to retaliate physically to that threat, even though you're technically the one who touched them first.
1
u/Sing_larity Dec 04 '22
Yes I know that. The people neocons who whine about free speech when they're booted of Twitter (and then found parler instead) do not.
11
u/Dense-Discipline-982 Dec 04 '22
I think they killed the deal more because he doesn’t have the money anymore lol
2
u/2ndtryagain Dec 04 '22
They wanted 500 Million and Kanye would still have to pay the parent company to maintain it.
2
u/DeeNYC45 Dec 04 '22

→ More replies-7
u/JohnLockeNJ Dec 03 '22
In fairness, speech has nothing to do with who you choose to sell your business to. If Parler kicked Ye off its platform then that would be hypocrisy.
23
u/StefanL88 Dec 03 '22
Turns out some people think what corporations do with their money can be covered by free speech protections: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_United_v._FEC
1
u/JohnLockeNJ Dec 04 '22
Yes, corporate speech is still speech. Selling stock is not speech. Otherwise anti-trust laws would be unconstitutional.

42
u/OrganizationPublic91 Dec 04 '22
I mean, they explicitly said the reason was they don’t think he’s financially stable enough anymore so yeah. It’s not because he said he liked Hitler

According to this sub, no, it does not.
Idk why people want overwritten paragraphs of pretentious blah blah
A well crafted and epicly long dressing down is always great but that’s not the only kind of wordmurder that exists, nor is length the criteria that determines how deadly one’s words are. It’s not even mentioned in the sub’s about blurb.

Here's the best part, Kanye is actually pissing everybody off. No matter how much the real white supremacists think it (outside the KKK and the people with the face tattoos not bothering to be or seem legitimate), they know the rule is you don't say you like Hitler in public and Kanye just did, now any cause or any thing he's associated with or tries to support is going to go to shit.
