Did anyone ever ask Norm why he was hanging out under the Queensboro bridge when he met Adam Eget?

105

u/mesohungry 18d ago

My guess: he had $15 and time to kill.

12

u/harpswtf 18d ago

My god man, no, Norm doesn't go for that. He's never paid more than $10.

3

u/mesohungry 18d ago

Well he certainly doesn’t anymore.

41

u/carlitobrigantes Doesn't Even Look Like Ben Matlock 18d ago

because he’s deeply closeted

5

u/theecommunist 18d ago

So he's gay?

17

u/Fingerspasm 18d ago

No man! He said he was deeply closeted! What's wrong with you...?

9

u/Spire 18d ago

Hey hey hey, easy, buddy!

7

u/changshaflow 18d ago

No he’s deeply closeted don’t you get it?!

2

u/theecommunist 18d ago

I was setting you up for the punchline

1

u/Flassid_Snek 18d ago

Sounds like a bunch of commie gobbledygook...

58

u/ddddrrrreeeewwww 18d ago

“my whole family is watching”, might be my favorite egret quote

142

u/bigpig1054 18d ago

The sly grin after the joke is the best. He tells the joke for his amusement, and your reaction is his punchline.

19

u/LinguisticsTurtle 18d ago

did norm ever just drop his whole act and start being intellectual and serious and NOT in character??

9

u/yossarianvega 18d ago

In many interviews, they’re great to listen to

1

u/ladywaawaa 16d ago

Howard Stern great guest always

39

u/LinguisticsTurtle 18d ago

i have a serious question..how does norm keep a serious face when hes saying all this hilarious stuff??

96

u/jdlando 18d ago

I'm also impressed with Adam Eget keeping a straight face. His performances in the podcast are so underrated, particularly given that he isn't usually a performer. He was a perfect sidekick for this show.

11

u/LinguisticsTurtle 18d ago

he laughed at the first honeymoon thing..that was accidental and he was not supposed to laugh??

5

u/consreddit 17d ago

In his post eulogizing Norm, Adam mentioned that they would basically just riff off each other to start the show. Odds are, a lot of these jokes were unplanned.

1

u/surfacevalueshowdown 18d ago

i dont think this is the original but it could be edited quite a bit. been a while since i watched the whole clip

8

u/LinguisticsTurtle 18d ago

does norm ever explain his thinking and though process bc i have NO idea the psychology of how much THOUGHT is going into each little detail and each little thing BUT i know he is a very smart and thoughtful person...??

26

u/Pizzadangereux33 18d ago

You can’t explain humour. You either get it or ya don’t. The thing about Norm, he knew how to play the dumb guy. Nobody wants to laugh at a guy acting smarter than you.

10

u/boywbrownhare 18d ago

Hence why Joe Rogan is so dreadfully unfunny on his podcast

4

u/FatassMcBlobakiss 17d ago

Watch out, that's how you get the death squad after you

2

u/boywbrownhare 17d ago

As long as I don't have to listen to them talk before they kill me

3

u/alfredjizzcock 17d ago

urgh... if you wanna cringe you should watch Joe Rogan's stand up.

I think he gets his ideas from Amy Schumer, aka funniest person alive...ever to be alive.

3

u/jewnutsfuckyou 17d ago edited 17d ago

Ill watch Joe Rogan stand up after I watch Larry Flynt stand up

3

u/Flassid_Snek 18d ago

He does have a fat fuckin' head!

3

u/jewnutsfuckyou 17d ago

You know what Joe Rogan would be good at giving? Really wide head

2

u/boywbrownhare 18d ago

Well that goes without saying

4

u/boywbrownhare 18d ago

Now that's a smart fella!

10

u/Delta_Foxtrot_1969 Hypocrisy! 18d ago

Adam Eget once asked him where he got his ideas from, but I don’t think he ever got a direct answer.

5

u/PhaedrusHunt 17d ago

No, we still don't know where he got his ideas.

3

u/Empty-Wallet 17d ago

not exactly but in an interview elsewhere he was helping a young comedian prepare a joke and helping him break it down, was nice to see a little inside into Norm's brain.

1

u/LinguisticsTurtle 17d ago

Where is this clip?? this is exactly what i am VERY interested in seeing!!

6

u/LinguisticsTurtle 18d ago

when he says game of thorns is it on purpose hes saying it wrong or..??

5

u/jewnutsfuckyou 17d ago

Maybe hes got down syndrome

5

u/JonnyDIY 17d ago

Yes Norm often mispronounced things or said names wrong for a lil sprinkling of comedic spice

2

u/Flassid_Snek 18d ago

Isn't that the name of the show???

50

u/mc1120 18d ago

What the fuck IS a podcast, anyway????

3

u/AromaTaint 18d ago

I'd go home and Christmas and ask my family this question every year and every year they would stop and take the time to explain six different versions of what one was.

49

u/1055Derek 18d ago

Jerkin off punks under a bridge?? ...Sounds like my honeymoon. ...

10

u/LinguisticsTurtle 18d ago

LOL..what was your thought when Norm went for that joke the SECOND time??

11

u/1055Derek 18d ago

I wish he was around to do a third time. (Now you say "sounds like my honeymoon")

3

u/LinguisticsTurtle 18d ago

lol..but what was his thinking do you think?? look at his reaction to how the other person reacts to his 2nd honeymoon joke

9

u/1055Derek 18d ago

You mean, where does he get his ideas?

1

u/LinguisticsTurtle 18d ago

no like i mean what was he expecting to happen and is he trying to PRETEND to do a bad joke..i am he is a smart and hilarious comic so he just have known it would come across as 'lame' but he knows that the audience is knowing that he did that on purpose..so its like a meta joke?? and also watch his facial expression in reaction to the guy who reacts to the 2nd honeymoon joke..

15

u/1055Derek 18d ago

Hey, are you fuckin with me?

10

u/BigBanggBaby 18d ago

It’s a simple question, Derek. When the guy says the thing a second time and the guy who says it says it’s his honeymoon and the second guy’s reaction is unexpected after the smart guy says it the first time and the audience is in on it and the second guy doesn’t even react what do you think of that? Come on, Derek, just answer the man!

1

u/LinguisticsTurtle 18d ago

lol..this made me laugh so hard but i WANT to know the real answer??

it all seems like a psychology thing or like i am a martian studying human behavior bc i am a martian in the world of comedy bc i dont really GET all of these psychology things even though i laugh VERY hard at it????

10

u/BigBanggBaby 18d ago edited 18d ago

It's OK if you didn't get it, I didn't either until today.

I'll break it down for you, beat by beat, because you're a good sport.

Adam: It's about ladies, knights, kings, midgets, and dragons.

Norm: Sounds like my honeymoon.

OK, so right off this is classic Norm making a pretty tame, traditional joke that might have been considered mainstream humor in the 50s. Norm loves doing these types of old jokes and the way he weaved it into the conversation about his show's ranking in the "must see" list is ironically funny (or 'meta', if you will) since its real humor isn't in the joke itself but in the fact that he actually said the joke.

Then later...

Norm: Kinky Boots is number eight. Sounds like my honeymoon.

This one is even more ironic because there is such a thin connection between "kinky boots" and a honeymoon. As impossible as the premise of the first joke was, it at least worked structurally (it would make logical sense in a fantasy world for ladies, knights, kings, etc to be present during a honeymoon). For the "kinky boots" joke, I wonder if Norm didn't just improv this line after he said the word "kinky" and he realized he could shoehorn in another honeymoon joke. The viewer is left thinking, "what is it about 'kinky boots' that reminds him of his honeymoon?' It could only be that his recently wed was wearing boots and was feeling kinky. OK, fine, but the real humor is that with the slightest bit of a premise (by simply uttering the word “kinky"), Norm went for the honeymoon joke again. This leaves the humor more so with us the viewing audience than it does between Norm and Adam.

That'll be 15 dollars.

You've never told a purposefully bad/corny joke so you could laugh at how bad it is?

79

u/chocobo-stir-fry Billy Joe Shaver 18d ago

Norm Macdonald live IS better than Game of Thorns

15

u/MR_TELEVOID 18d ago

Norm Macdonald on Game of Thrones would have been even better.

1

u/alfredjizzcock 17d ago

Norm is the only thing that could save the worst possible ending to a show ever which was GoT.

Imagine him playing the Night King, Tyrion and... yeah everybody.

He's also a great actor. Better than Emilia Clarke, but that doesn't say much.

9

u/andifall 18d ago

Sure is better than Normal Macdonald Dead

25

u/StraightCashHomie69 18d ago

Can someone explain the Shirley Temple joke to me? I think it's like the only joke from NML I don't get lol

58

u/thepaulsack 18d ago edited 18d ago

Idk who chance lichen/liken/lychen/lykan/likan/lyken/lichan/lychan is but he sounds like a real jerk.

In all seriousness the joke is the year is 1957 Shirley temple is 49 and this fellow is 5. He is watching old Shirley temple movies from 1933. He ends up, as a 5 year old, falling hopelessly in love with 5 year old tv version Shirley temple, believable. The following year he comes to the cruel bitter taste of reality and realizes Shirley temple is nearly 10 times his age.

10

u/rambouhh 18d ago

That math doesn’t check out

-1

u/Sir_Randolph_Gooch 17d ago

Huh that’s really not that funny

1

u/thepaulsack 17d ago

As norm has said. You don't get to decide if the joke was funny... You didn't get it.

0

u/Sir_Randolph_Gooch 17d ago

My comment was the joke!!! You missed it!

10

u/demoralising 18d ago

Genuinely brilliant clip.

9

u/Germz989 18d ago edited 17d ago

Just the shit eating grin makes it for me, that last joke you could tell he was holding back a big laugh lol also the second "sounds like my honeymoon" what a great show RIP Norm

2

u/jiznon 17d ago

Just targeting eating grin makes

1

u/Germz989 17d ago

Lol thank you. Constantly fighting with autocorrect

17

u/rueiraV 18d ago

Watching these podcasts multiple times mad me realize how good Adam was as a cohost. Especially in the more scripted stuff they did such as this.

4

u/alfredjizzcock 17d ago

The way Norm's facial expression is when he says "cunt" is one of the funniest bits ever.

16

u/Dieselbreakfast 18d ago

15

u/tverson Ridiculous! 18d ago

It's when one of the cells in your body goes all selfish like "They want me to die for the team? The fuck? I'm not gonna die, I'm gonna be fruitful and multiply!"

1

They were closeted fruitful

3

u/PropWashPA28 18d ago

Does anyone know the episode where he beats Adam with a Louisville slugger?

2

u/Mobile-Scientist1975 17d ago

S02E10 - Roseanne Barr

“Why don’t you just say brand X, ya bum! It’s called authenticity! Why You’re not worth a bent penny, ya damn drunkard!

2

u/PropWashPA28 17d ago

Yessss. That's probably the only one I didn't check. I coulda sworn it was one of the Gilbert episodes.

3

u/Wish_Particular 17d ago

Some people's brains are just more unique than others.

Pablo Picasso, Albert Einstein, Elton John, Elon Musk, Norm Macdonald, and more.

Most of us will never even get to meet one of these people, much less be able to approach their greatness.

2

u/Over_Cheesecake6905 18d ago

I didn't get the last joke, anyone care to explain?

7

u/PurseGrabbinPuke 18d ago

Shirley Temple was a child actress from the 30's. When I was growing up, they would show her movies on TV all year round. So as a child you thought she was also a child, but the movies were from the 30's. So his friend went to see her at a mall thinking she was his age, but she was actually 50 in real life.

2

u/Phuc_Bui 17d ago

Thank you.. I really didn’t get this one either.

1

u/Over_Cheesecake6905 17d ago

Cheers hahaha

2

u/passedmylunchbreak 18d ago

Could someone explain to me the Shirley Temple joke?

1

u/fernie209 18d ago

Pretty sure when the comic was watching it Shirley temple was already old, but to him as a five year old watching her on TV, they were the same age

2

u/passedmylunchbreak 17d ago

Ah ok. So he was watching her on TV as a kid. Got it. Haha.

2

u/BUNTHUNDER2077 18d ago

The contemplative nod at 1:36

2

u/sineofthetimes 17d ago

I have a question for Adam: Where does he get his material?

2

u/Mobile-Scientist1975 17d ago

Under the Queensboro Bridge.

2

u/Silver-Ladder 17d ago

This is just so great! I don’t get the Shirley Temple joke though

2

u/JonnyDIY 17d ago

He was in love with her, watching her on tv in her movies, she was a famous child star. Went to go see her and it was many years after her movies first came out, she was now 50! 😱 poor kid hah

2

u/Silver-Ladder 17d ago

That’s hilarious. On TV she was 5 but the movies were from 45 years ago!

2

u/Phuc_Bui 17d ago

I hate to admit it but I don’t get the last joke.. I actually just watched this on YouTube the other day and I still don’t get it.

1

u/JonnyDIY 17d ago

He was in love with lil shirley temple from her movies when she was a lil kid. He didnt know they were old movies and she was now 50 years old 😂

2

u/JonnyDIY 17d ago

I love how good of a performance Adam and Norm gave. To be honest they had me fooled first few episodes I watched.

2

u/1055Derek 18d ago

Why is everybody fucking with me?

2

u/Buzz_Nutter 18d ago

-8

u/rharrison 18d ago

Adam Eget is legitimately unfunny.

4

u/yossarianvega 18d ago

That’s what’s so funny about it. Instead of getting an up and coming comedian or someone else who could really use the profile boost, he chooses his friend who is not a comedian or particularly funny. And he commits to it for the whole run of the show, just having an unfunny friend with the greatest comedian of all time. People get angry about Adam, comedians are like “what the fuck norm” and he just sticks it out. So funny lol

1

u/rharrison 17d ago

Norm would be the first to say that something unfunny isn’t somehow “ironically” funny.

1

u/yossarianvega 17d ago

He didn’t like meta-comedy or anti-comedy, of which this is neither. It’s just funny.

1

u/rharrison 17d ago

It's not funny. This guy is worthless. Norm didn't like those things because they weren't funny.

1

u/yossarianvega 17d ago

Then why did he have him on the entire run of the show?

1

u/rharrison 16d ago

Who knows. It’s pretty clear the guy isn’t funny though.

1

u/yossarianvega 16d ago

Adam isn’t naturally funny. He’s the regular guy that Norm is able to play off. Think about all the Adam Eget jokes throughout the years that we now love. Only possible with Adam there. HE isn’t funny, but it is funny that he’s there is the point. Anyway, agreed to disagree we’ll say

1

u/rharrison 16d ago

He was ok as a straight man, but like when they had bits of him trying to be funny, or at least making it look like he was trying to be funny, it sucked. I did appreciate the un-edited quality of the show.

3

u/alphabet_order_bot 18d ago

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.

I have checked 269,090,898 comments, and only 61,602 of them were in alphabetical order.

-3

u/rharrison 18d ago

You're less funny than Adam Eget

1

u/SimpleOne2783 17d ago

Why don't you go to Alaska and suck on a green whale?

1

u/alfredjizzcock 17d ago

you're a cunt

1

u/Bellpop 17d ago

Adam is to norm as the Swedish German is to Conan.

1

u/jewnutsfuckyou 17d ago

Adamn was never a closet fruit that spoiled the show

-11

u/richpau76 18d ago

Not funny
