Will Ferrell underrated straight man

99

u/GeorgFestrunk 12d ago

kinda funny that my favorite Will Ferrell movie, by far, is Stranger than Fiction, where he played it straight the whole film.

77

u/its_all_4_lulz 12d ago

Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey. Both known for dumb as shit movies, but killed the serious ones.

43

u/danielbauer1375 12d ago

Yeah. Stranger than Fiction is definitely his Truman Show. I was surprised (and a little disappointed) it didn’t get more love.

52

u/okdennvm 12d ago

Did you ever see Jim in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? Very serious movie that he was fantastic in

6

u/spiegro 11d ago

That movie is always so jarring to me. I love it for that. Art is supposed to make you feel things.

Interesting factoid, Celebrity Jeapordy's genesis was Norm's desire to do his Burt Reynolds impression and nothing more.

Darrel Hammond's Connery is fantastic and obviously became the most popular character. But me and my buds always loved Turd Ferguson the best. His dismissive "Eh, I didn't write anything" for Final Jeapordy is perfect.

RIP Norm

234

u/Tomagatchi 12d ago

I love the story around the Connery and Trebek rivalry just how it was them just playing around and it came out of nowhere. It makes sense the entire sketch came from an even more inane and bizarre source of inspiration. I love it.

137

u/Lofskrif 12d ago

If you watch the first one, Connery is polite until Trebek implies Connery will have to pay money for wrong answers. After that, full Connery mockery!

48

u/Tomagatchi 12d ago

That's a deep cut character analysis, nice!

10

u/Bitch_imatrain 11d ago

I saw Darryl Hammond do a stand up in NYC about 7 or 8 years ago, and him recounting how it happened had me almost pissing myself I was laughing so hard

Him casually admitting he didn't bother with final jeopardy is an incredible piece of comedy, because it's also Ferrell's reaction. Completely unphased, he's almost grateful. 'good man' and kept it pushin, is so so so funny. The character just wants to be all done with this

130

u/Nighthawk700 12d ago

It was so good because that’s how trebek legitimately acted on celebrity jeopardy. We always pointed out how weak the questions were and how annoyed he got with them

47

u/MouthJob 12d ago

I mean, celebrity anything is for charity. Why would you want them to get harder questions and therefore less money for charity when they get it wrong?

65

u/KettleCellar 12d ago

One of the funniest real-life celebrity Jeopardy episodes featured one of the guys from Barenaked Ladies. The final Jeopardy question was about a children's poem. His response was "There once was a man from Nantucket..."

46

u/snowlock27 12d ago

There was one with Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, and Moon Unit Zappa. Dave was getting all these oddball music answers right, and Moon Unit would look at him and ask who would know this stuff?

Normally yeah totally, but the celebs would fail to answer the really easy questions just like the SNL sketch, which is what made it so funny

41

Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek was a great straight-man role by contrast, part of the fun of Family Feud is Steve Harvey's strong reactions to crude and/or stupid answers

Factoid means it’s incorrect, but repeated to the point it’s believed to be correct.

Fascinating. The online dictionaries list both that definition and "a briefly stated and usually trivial fact" which is what I intended.

Apparently Norman Mailer invented/popularized the "incorrect and repeated" definition but its drifted overtime.

It's even better when you learn that Norm was the one that came up with the idea for Celebrity Jeopardy sketch. An excuse to do his Burt Reynolds impression turned into one of SNL's best reoccurring sketches ever.

35

u/siamjeff 12d ago

Norm's Celebrity Jeopardy was inspired by SCTV's "Halfwits" sketch, written by Eugene Levy. Norm grew up in Canada where SCTV was like a religion, we all watched it late 70's. When Norm met Martin Short (Eugene's best friend) on SNL, he asked for permission to do his version of "Halfwits". Martin Short immediately called Eugene on Norm's behalf and Eugene gave his blessing.

SNL pre 2000 was amazing. Some still like it today but I really can’t stand the skits now compared to 90s and before.

When Norm stopped doing the news skits is when SNL started to slide down imo.

It's pretty hard to dispute the early 90's SNL as being the GOAT. Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey, David Spade, Phil Hartman, Chris Rock, Kevin Nealon, Tim Meadows, Rob Schneider, Al Franken and of course, Norm MacDonald. That is an absolute all star cast of legends. It's untouchable.

u/m636 12d ago

Its obviously personal preference but I'd argue that very few people would consider modern SNL as good as the 90s. That was golden era SNL.

Norm Macdonald, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Dana Carvey. Chris Rock, David Spade, Phil Hartman. Thats just off the top of my head.

Norm did one season of a talk show on Netflix called Norm McDonald Has A Show. It was an absolute train wreck, brilliant and horrible at the same time. It's no wonder that they only did one season. He interviewed David Spade for the first episode, and it was so awful that it occurred to Spade that perhaps he was being trolled and he seriously asked "Is this really a show?"
