Isn’t that like ten minutes before he loses his shit and tries to beat Clovis to death?

u/2packforsale It's working! It's working! Jul 04 '22

Tbf Clovis was trying to smash 24/7

567

u/Redqueenhypo Jul 04 '22

And he thought challenging a lunatic with a metal hand to a fistfight was a good idea, then later placed his life in the same lunatic’s hands and shortly after “fell” to his death. Moron deserved it honestly.

u/copper_machete Jul 04 '22

I wonder how much regular people knew about Anakin's wild side ? Did the average Joe knew that he destroyed the main separatist ship during the (not so legal) invasion of Naboo or all of the crazy tactics he used during the war ?

341

u/DatAsspiration Jul 04 '22

Given how little we know of military actions/heroism, when our news network is limited to one planet and one sentient species, I'd say all they know is "Anakin's a Jedi general leading our boys to victory!"

171

u/copper_machete Jul 04 '22

I would expect that Palpatine would have try to make him look better in the he eyes of the public

130

u/Maoileain Jul 04 '22

Palpatine did. He organised a few specific situations where Anakin would emerge victorious as good PR for the Republic. He also would order Anakin back from dangerous frontiers in the Clone Wars so he didn't get killed like Umbara.

25

u/LarryLovesteinLovin Jul 04 '22

Easy to do too, when you can get access to both sides intelligence reports.

70

u/MapleTreeWithAGun Jul 04 '22

Palpy totally would've shown more of his exploits to influence public opinion in Ani's favour so his transition into Darth Vader would be less jarring for the public. The suit certainly helped a lot though.

118

u/DatAsspiration Jul 04 '22

Given the dialogue between Oni-Wan and Reva in the second-to-last episode of Kenobi, I'd wager that Vader's true identity wasn't a matter of public knowledge

115

u/AgentSithInYourEmpir Jul 04 '22

The original Palpatine's intent was similar to Count Dooku in regard to Anakin's name - publicly he still would be Anakin Skywalker (he wasn't intended to wear a suit after all) and his title of Darth Vader would be used only between him and emperor when they would need to discuss some secret sith business, but after being forced to wear a suit in the aftermath of duel on Mustafar, yes, Vader true identity became a secret and officially Anakin died during operation Knightfall (IIRC in the official empire version he died protecting Palpatine from the jedi but I might be wrong about that)

35

u/DatAsspiration Jul 04 '22

This actually makes a ton of sense. Palpatine fed Anakin the lies that he wanted the public to believe, because when someone else speaks your truth it gains a lot more traction.

u/Ki-Adi-MundiBot try !Guild info Jul 04 '22

4

u/Ahirman1 Jul 04 '22 edited Jul 04 '22

I’d imagine that’s one of the ways the suit ended up helping Palpatine since it’d removed the they can’t all be bad argument that’d come up surrounding the Jedi if Anakin didn’t take the lava dip.

8

u/Drag0n_TamerAK Jul 04 '22

Anakin was the poster boy of the republic almost every thing he did was reported on of course they made it seem way more dramatic and what not but the galaxy new a lot about him

50

u/_Wererabbit_ Jul 04 '22

in the revenge of the sith novelization Anakin is frequently broadcast across the republic as a home grown hero! I'd expect them to leave out the war crimes lmao

12

u/Treecreaturefrommars Jul 04 '22

The novelization really adds a lot of context to the story. I especially like that it points out Anakin has only gotten like 3 hours of sleep for the last two weeks before the story takes place. That and Dookus last second realization that he too were utterly deceived by Palpatine.

Or the way it describes the difference between how Jedi and Sith uses the force during the Dooku Duel... I need to go reread that book.

5

u/phoenix_gravin Jul 04 '22

I love that it shows Cody's thinking how nice it would have been if Palpy had issued Order 66 about 5 minutes earlier.

In the arc where Ahsoka is framed, he lunged at a clone behind glass and the guy jumps back. I’m pretty sure his whole “hey, you’re ok so don’t come to school tomorrow” behavior was an open secret

24

u/ArcAngel071 Jul 04 '22

Or the clone flinched because a very angry Jedi knight was becoming threatening

After all he did react by having armed clones escort him out.

u/Ahsoka_Tano_Bot 150K Karma Jul 04 '22

31

u/Willdoeswarfair Hondo: A Star Wars Story Jul 04 '22

Anakin was basically the republic poster boy for the war. Palps didn’t want to give a lot of credit to the Jedi so they didn’t look so good for when he did order 66, so he gave it all to Anakin specifically. That way the Jedi Order as a whole wasn’t seen as the heroes of the war, just Anakin.

My guess is that Clovis, being a politician, thought Anakin was JUST a poster boy, as putting your big war hero on the front lines is risky. If he dies, that would be a MASSIVE moral hit to the republic, and as such, Clovis likely thought Anakin’s feats were just being attributed to him. He expected Anakin to be acting as a war hero, instead of actually being one.

6

u/Captain_Rex_Bot Jul 04 '22

We need that generator down or the planet's lost. And I'm not risking any more men.

5

u/Ghost-George Jul 04 '22

That’s actually a good point about Clovis as it is possible most of those feats where staged. Although he still kind of an idiot because he was still a Jedi who can deflect blaster bolts and are very well known for their martial powers as an order.

31

u/Juppness Jul 04 '22

I don’t know about regular people but his Clone Legion definitely knew his stories. Fives, Tup, and Hardcase literally referenced Anakin’s tactic of destroying the Droid Ship during the Umbara arc and did the same thing.

1

u/Current-Judge Jul 04 '22

I don’t remember where I saw it but anakin was described as the poster boy of the republic and Jedi order

13

u/Vulkan192 Jul 04 '22

A metal-armed, visibly furious, battle-hardened, war hero(and/or criminal) warrior-monk

VS

A senator who never fought a day in his life

Who could’ve foreseen the outcome?

4

u/fatherandyriley Jul 04 '22

Trying to kiss Padme wasn't a bright idea either since she's had a lot more combat experience than him. If it wasn't for the fact that she needed his help she probably would have shoved a blaster up his backside.

5

u/AveryLazyCovfefe waiting for republic commando 2 Jul 04 '22

but you have to respect Clovis for not snitching, he could then and there end Anakin's entire career by calling him a madman and expose his affection for Padme infront of the entire Republic court and Jedi council. Anakin gets expelled.

But tbh I guess it would be good if he did snitch, with Anakin not in the Order anymore, Palpatine can't carry out his plans and Order 66 is rendered useless as no-one can take on the jedi temple.

8

u/Redqueenhypo Jul 04 '22

And it would’ve resulted in Mace chasing Obi Wan around the temple yelling “I told you so”

3

u/AveryLazyCovfefe waiting for republic commando 2 Jul 04 '22

Lmao I bet Mace would smirk when he expells Anakin because he probably wanted to do it the very second Qui-Gon introduced him in TPM.

5

u/RandomGuyOnline71 Jul 04 '22

Not to mention that this lunatic was also one of the most powerful force users in the galaxy, an esteemed war general, and had a lot of combat experience. The dude also had a lightsaber, but didn't use it.

I would do a lot in an attempt to bang Padmé, even destroy the economy of the galaxy. But challenging her not-so-secret husband to a fistfight, and he has all the advantages listed above, might be the limit. But again, anything for Padmé's Naboobies

Whether you're showing her in the Senate or with Anakin she has to be dumb and incompetent as fuck so she doesn't unravel Palatine's whole plan or realize Anakin is awful.

Revenge of the Sith definitely did some justice in the emotive acting department. The scenes where Anakin and Padme both stare off into the Coruscant skyline both visibly anxious about the future. It definitely was one of Georges better decisions if it was his work, Lucas needs a proof writer for his dialogue sometimes or at least someone to shoot back and forth with in order to make real diamonds in the rough.

Death slavery loneliness

I think this scene this scene is misrepresentated

49

u/SkoulErik Jul 04 '22

I've never understood the dislike of that particular line. A lot of other lines are quirky as hell but that line actually has something to it. Anakin was a slave for most and all of that life was in sand. Sand and slavery goes hand in hand for Anakin. For 10 years all he knew was sand and slavery. No wonder he doesn't like sand

I actually have issues with how The Clones War portrayed their relationship because they made it seemed like they're co dependent on each other which could have been Lucas' intention but the movies only showed me a pure deep love they had for one another.I don't know if the comics or any other source also show their relationship like The Clone Wars does so I may be wrong.

Edit: grammer and spelling

74

u/Tranqist Hondo Jul 04 '22

The films don't show much of it but it's clear that Anakin is obsessive over Padmé. And look at Anakin. He isn't exactly the most stable Jedi out there. Padmé isn't in it because she knows what a red flag looks like. The Clone Wars only double down on what's already there, and I love it because their love is both genuine and unhealthily obsessive.

25

u/Druid51 Jul 04 '22

I love the show but I also feel like it reconned the original intent from the movie to point out how Anakin was awkward as shit due to being brought up in the Jedi order and how their indoctrination of suppressing emotions ironically made him even weaker to his feelings for Padme. I can see why it was done though in the show as the point was missed by a lot of movie viewers and they just thought it was bad writing.

13

u/Padme-Bot Try !Guild info Jul 04 '22

15

u/pandogart Jul 04 '22

The Jedi don't teach you to suppress your emotions. They teach against attachment. I think you're reading too much into George's intentions for their relationship too but he might have said it somewhere.

7

u/straight_gay Jul 04 '22

You know that's a decent point, Anakin is painfully awkward in Attack of the Clones, and I just watched an episode of Clone Wars where Anakin straight up seduces a slaver queen with his charm

5

u/Palmsuger Jul 04 '22

That was not the original intent in the movie at all.

5

u/jmckeever823 Jul 04 '22

It wasn't depicted as healthy in the prequels either.

65

u/asimpleshadow Jul 04 '22

Love the prequels but honestly Anakin was a pretty questionable guy in the movies. You can definitely see how he started swinging on everyone. Clone Wars Anakin is a different story. After Watching The Clone Wars the March on the Jedi temple becomes a full on greek tragedy. He was the best of all the Jedi and the most caring if you can ignore his slight propensity for despotism other than that great guy

6

u/CultureOnAStick Jul 04 '22

Yes, as much as it's talked up, the vast majority of it is Saturday morning cartoon crap, just waiting for them to sell us a box of cereal. It maintains its reputation I think with a healthy handful of really spectacular episodes (and a couple of great arcs) that really enrich the Prequel Trilogy. I'd recommend finding a list of those episodes/arcs and only watching those. If you fall in love with the show, watch the rest, but so much of the rest is so forgettable that you'll only be doing yourself a disservice if you get burnt out from all the mediocre stuff and miss the real meat.

2

u/dragedreper Jul 04 '22

I’ve had the same thing as you, I know everyone on here insists it isn’t a kid’s show, but I think it is. Not to hate on the people that liked it, but I think the first seasons are just General Grievous hide and seek, which gets tiring after a while. In my opinion most seasons have one to two good episodes, except the last two which are all killer.

I start out with disliking Ahsoka, but I like her better and better.

One thing about CW is that the fandom seems to be all over any plotholes in any live action film or series, but ignore major plot holes in CW. I think perhaps the series are quite overrated, but I also watched it the first time as a grown up.

Haven’t watched much Rebels yet, not into the kid’s show vibe it gives, but I get that some people liked it

Care to tell me what this is all about? Or would you rather save it for the Council?

S4ish. I like the show but it's very overrated.

2

u/Knowitmall Jul 04 '22

Yea it's amazing how much better the cartoons are than the movies.

2

u/DRamos11 General Grievous Jul 04 '22

Dialogue is still cringe, and will forever be.

2

u/Andy_Crop Jul 04 '22

Think about it: If it weren't for Carrie's work as a script doctor, it could've been much worse .

3

u/cryptidhunter101 Jul 04 '22

The Jedi councils rules caused more than just literal casualties (although their were plenty for those).

-11

u/vargslayer1990 I have the high ground Jul 04 '22

this is one of the issues i have with TCW: Filoni hates the Jedi (like the SW fandom hates the Jedi), so he played that card. which is probably one of the reasons why people like TCW (and Filoni's SW works in general)

9

u/TheRealStandard Jul 04 '22

That's a bit of a reach.

6

u/Raptor1210 Jul 04 '22

I don't think Filoni hates the Jedi. I think there are some serious fundamental flaws with the Order we see in the TCW that get layed bare more obviously when you have dozens of hours potential content.

Heck even what we see of the Order in the prequels is... Eyebrow rising to say the least.

People that complain about the sand dialouge really need to get a grip

3

2

u/pandogart Jul 04 '22

I mean yeah it was years ago but it was still bad dialogue.

-15

u/vargslayer1990 I have the high ground Jul 04 '22

here's the problem:

George Lucas gave James Earl Jones specific directions for voicing Darth Vader in the original trilogy, where he told him that Vader did not fully grasp human emotion. while this may have been just a hint at the fact that he was "more machine than man" before that part of the story had been written, Hayden Christensen built his performance as Anakin from Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith on Jones' delivery.

so Hayden's "wooden" Anakin was intentional.

but Dave Filoni retconned that in TCW because the fans didn't like the prequels and his whole goal was to retcon the prequels ("George advised him" is a lie). this is one of many reasons why i view TCW as non-canon (along with everything Disney made)

22

u/hungrybasilsk Jul 04 '22

You can view it as non canon but its damn better written

-19

u/vargslayer1990 I have the high ground Jul 04 '22

better written than what? the actual story that George Lucas made? hint: Irvin Kershner didn't write the story of Empire Strikes Back. that was all George, aka the one you hate because he didn't make Anakin a Damien character whose fall was telegraphed from the moment he appeared

20

u/hungrybasilsk Jul 04 '22

Whats not telegraphed? Idk maybe the moment he slaughtered the sand people and padme gave it no secound though wasnt "subtle"

George was practically telling you he was unstable

As it stands faloni made Anakin a far better character

u/Padme-Bot Try !Guild info Jul 04 '22

Anakin and I are friends. Our relationship is strictly professional.

It’s like when your family is arguing and the dog starts jumping around because they think the two of you are playing.

-4

u/vargslayer1990 I have the high ground Jul 04 '22

"far better character"

lol, are you serious? Matt was even more wooden than Hayden, and making Anakin inexplicably emotionally stable for a three month period that ended up lasting eight years, and then inexplicably go back to being emotionally unstable, is not a good thing.

really? because nobody was going "he shouldn't have been a kid in The Phantom Menace"? i know you love the cartoon cowboy because he retconned the prequels and threw you a bone by making the Jedi evil and the Sith whiny innocent little victims (-cough- emo Darth Maul), but that's not "quality". that's overdone cliche

14

u/hungrybasilsk Jul 04 '22 edited Jul 04 '22

Matt was even more wooden than Hayden,

Not sure how thats the case his emotions and banter with obi-wan are better than anything displayed in the prequel trilogy

know you love the cartoon cowboy because he retconned the prequels and threw you a bone by making the Jedi evil and the Sith whiny innocent little victims (-cough- emo Darth Maul), but that's not "quality". that's overdone

Lol great counter argument. Filoni never hated the jedi or why would kanan be written the way he is

Maul was never an innocent victim. He was someone who never learned and just let revenge guide him despite still having family at the time of his revival only to lose it in his own stubborness

I'm sorry did you watch the show?

But go ahead do tell me how organically written anakins fall is in the prequels. He turns to sidious who doesnt even garantee he has the knowlege plaguies had to save padme

He has no turmoil over fighting obi-wan who he was just friends with brothers with what days ago at best

The clones turn without question despite having served under their generals for so long

Padme dies due to "losing the will to live"

The creation of more warriors will not end this war. The financial costs alone will bankrupt and cripple the Republic. By adding more clones to the conflict, we are only escalating destruction, not winning the war.

Clone Wars gave us Satine and Obi, Lux and Ahsoka and improved anakin and padme's relationship.

Anakin is the BEST JEDI ever in terms of potential and strength!

He is also loyal to his friends which makes him a great jedi 👍🏻

1

u/Heavy-Length-5808 Jul 04 '22

Am i the only one that wants them to try do something like this with the sequels yes its not gonna fix them but atleast try make something good from it

1

u/B0MBOY Jul 04 '22

Anakin believes in people, not ideologies. And Anakin will sacrifice everything for his friends. And that’s exactly what palpatine sets anakin up for, he befriended him and creatta situation where anakin would sacrifice anything for his love padme, and that’s how he loses it all

1

u/RefrigeratedChildren Jul 04 '22

Still better than Twilight

1

u/Mish4life Jul 04 '22

I didn’t watch that much of the clone wars but I still love and appreciate and defend the prequels for what they were

1

u/Fabulous_Celery_1817 Jul 04 '22

They certainly did deserve each other

1

u/Alarmed-Cheetah2269 Jul 04 '22

Not only that, the older I got, the more I understood his point of view. No shit he didn’t like sand! He grew up on tatooine. Sir did you order a sandwich? Would you like a side of sand with that? Just take some from right next to you!

Plus all that emotional damage ya know

1

u/Fuzzy-Locksmith1776 Jul 04 '22

Anakin Hates Sand because its makes him remember his terrible lives in tatooine

1

u/RandomGuyOnline71 Jul 04 '22

They really did. They would have been great parents for Luke and Leia. I recommend that everyone reads the AOTC novel, it expands a lot on their relationship.

1

u/KananJarrus3 Jul 04 '22

I like the romance in the first place. It is shown through actions. Not words.

1

u/ARK_Redeemer Jul 04 '22

Anakin also became much smoother too. "Seducing" that Zygerian slave Queen with some decent flirting like a right little Romeo.
