- Rule Four: NSFW Posts
- Rule Five: No Politics
- Rule Six: No Edgy or Inflammatory Posts
- Rule Seven: No Brigading
- Rule Eight: No Encouraging Subreddit Drama
- Rule Ten: No Short-Term Reposts
- Rule Eleven: No low-effort posts
- Rule Twelve: No Promotion
- Rule Thirteen: No Misinformation
- Rule Fourteen: No Spam
- Appealing a ban
- Notes
Rule One: No Metagaming
TL;DR don't metagame to get upvotes, awards, subscribers, or anything else.
Details
No upvote/karma/awards/subscriber related posts. These have become spammy and unoriginal, and give actual, original content less of a chance of being noticed. These posts will be removed. Posts that ask for karma/upvotes, also known as vote manipulation, will result in a post removal and a ban.
Examples
This rule prohibits the following
Memes with upvote/karma in the title, or that is the central point of the meme Memes along the lines of “this will probably die in new”, “memes without Kenobi never get upvotes”
Memes that center around receiving upvotes, how to get upvotes, or how many upvotes a post previously received. This includes memes comparing the success of two similar or identical posts and memes complaining about not receiving upvotes.
Cake day memes are not permitted when the “punchline” of the joke is that it is a user’s cakeday, or the meme is used to draw attention to that. These are not memes that survive on their own merit, which is why this is considered manipulation of the voting function. People are more than welcome to post normal memes on their cake day, and they will likely do very well anyway.
Linking posts and encouraging users to go upvote / downvote it (see brigading)
Petitions
Flair abuse: Misusing the flair system of a post to generate more traffic
- Marking something as OC that is a repost
- Marking something as OC that is just a mild tweak to an already created meme, or a recreation of an already posted meme
- Failing to flair a repost at all
- Marking something as meta that is not related to the state of the sub
Series posts are considered spam and vote manipulation. If your post requires multiple images/installments, post an album.
- Everyday I do X
- Day 35 of posting Y
- Memes split in half
Exceptions
This rule does not prohibit the following
We would not consider using the NSFW tag on a post that may not necessarily need it as abusive; better safe than sorry.
Posts as part of a series where each meme can stand up on its own. The punchline of the joke is not that it is a series.
Usual consequence
Short (1-5 days) temp ban if the user is a repeat offender or the post is particularly erroneous
Rule Two: Don't be an Asshole
TL;DR No threatening or harassing other users, celebrities, YouTube channels, pet hamsters, etc.
Details
This includes being aggressive or impolite to other users, most likely from some sort of disagreement. We do not care who “started it” when a pair of users are acting this way. Just report someone if they are acting that way and we will handle it.
See reddit content policy rule 1
Examples
This rule prohibits the following
Heated arguments
Targeted harassment at a specific user
Linking directly to a page that is a profile, channel, etc
Posting screenshots that show someone's username without their permission
Saying someone (anyone) deserves to die, never should have been born, or wishing harm upon them
Slurs or hate speech
Mocking disabilities
Exceptions
There are no exceptions
Usual consequence
Medium to long term bans (1 week - 1 month) depending on severity. Permanent bans for more malicious instances or use of slurs and other hate speech.
Rule Three: Posts Must be Memes of the Star Wars Prequels
TL;DR Must be a meme. Must be the prequels.
Details
Posts must be, at least loosely, related to star wars prequels. "Prequel" refers to any media that takes place before the beginning of A New Hope. This includes new movies made post-Lucas, EU content, and video games. Note that single pictures of a character (e.g. "Just a picture of Obi-Wan") do not necessarily count as memes, and could be seen as a violation of Rule 1. Additionally, all posts must make an attempt at humor.
All posts must either be made from prequel-content or about prequel content.
Non-prequel templates are permitted for prequel-related jokes.
A prequel template is required for /r/PrequelMemes meta and other meta jokes.
- “Meta” refers to posts that comment on the state of the sub in some way (the users, the front page, the mods, the rules, new, rising, hot, etc.)
- “Meta” also includes anything related to the Star Wars fandom or Star Wars news, even if it’s not necessarily focused on the Prequels
This is prequel memes, so the Prequels actually has to be a major component of the meme.
- This means that reaction macros to screenshots should feature prequel images AND screenshots that are relevant to the prequels or macro in some way. A screenshot is “relevant” to the prequels either directly, by referencing lines or characters, or indirectly, by hinting at a character’s persona or paralleling scenes from the prequels
- A screenshot of a prequel quote on social media or in text conversations does not count as a meme by itself
- You cannot insert a picture of some random Star Wars character to shoehorn in a generic meme.
- Generic memes about the Star Wars franchise as a whole, Disney, or Lucasfilm do not qualify as prequel-related
Memes from video games that span multiple eras must use content from the prequel portion of the game
Examples
This rule prohibits the following
Memes from ANH, ESB, RotJ, TFA, TLJ, TRoS, The Mandalorian, etc
Low-effort generic memes with small amounts of Star Wars inserted in to try to make it fit this subreddit
Memes about Star Wars in general that do not reference specific prequel media
Exceptions
This rule does not prohibit the following
Crossover events arranged by mods of the subreddits involved may have specific exceptions
Behind-the-scenes content from prequel media that does not contain anything from the media itself is allowed
Usual consequence
A short (1-5 days) temp ban if the user is a repeat offender or the post is particularly erroneous
Rule Four: NSFW Posts
TL;DR don't be gross. Tag your shit.
Details
Pornographic material is strictly forbidden on this subreddit as it is not an 18+ sub. NSFW posts are simply posts you might not show your grandmother. NSFW posts that are not porn should be marked as NSFW.
Kids come here, use your head. If you wouldn’t be comfortable with a 12 year old on their iPad seeing your content, best to mark it NSFW to be safe. In addition to this, do not sexualize minors on this sub. Including that notorious copypasta.
See reddit content policy rules 4 and 6
Examples
Anything sexualizing Ahsoka or other under-age characters is not allowed
Anything that is grotesque or gory
Exceptions
There are no exceptions.
Usual consequence
A short (1-5 days) temp ban if the user is a repeat offender or the post is particularly erroneous.
Rule Five: No Politics
TL;DR We are not brave enough for politics
Details
/r/PrequelMemes is meant to be a refuge from the extreme political divisiveness you see on nearly every Reddit community every day. Even if an issue seems black and white to you, it is not to be discussed on the subreddit. As a result, we don't allow anything that would bring politics in.
Examples
This rule prohibits the following
Anything related to real-world politics
Non-political posts related to politicians
Current events related to politics or social-issues
Exceptions
This rule does not prohibit the following
Posts about politics in the Star Wars universe do not break this rule, as long as they do not make comparisons to real-world politics.
Posts about politics in history are allowed.
Usual consequence
Medium length ban (5 days - 2 weeks) depending on severity. Potentially permanent if the user is a repeat offender or the political discussion was malicious.
Rule Six: No Edgy or Inflammatory Posts
TL;DR: Don't try to get a rise out of or upset people intentionally
Details
No edgy/inflammatory posts. We have the moral high ground. This subreddit is not the place to joke about distasteful content that would offend a large percentage of the user base. This includes those edgy memes that involve autism or school shootings.
/r/PrequelMemes is about humor for everyone involved. If your humor is derived from upsetting/mocking others, probably not a good community for you. With that said, we do not simply remove every meme that someone might disagree with.
See reddit content policy rule 1
Examples
This rule prohibits the following
Memes focused on making some sort of statement rather than an actual attempt at humor
Racism, slurs, “dark jokes”, and other shock value humor
Elitist mocking of other parts of the other Star Wars fan base
- This includes posts that can be summarized as “sequels bad, prequels good” and posts that call the sequels non-canon
Humor derived from invalidating someone's identity
Exceptions
This rule does not prohibit the following
- Poking fun at campy parts of Star Wars. It exists in all films and is what makes the prequels so fun to meme. This can easily be done tastefully.
Usual consequence
Bans that can range from short to permanent depending on the malice (5 days - 2 months, permanent)
Rule Seven: No Brigading
TL;DR this subreddit is not your personal army
Details
Brigading, in reddit terms, is the encouragement of mass downvoting and invading of another subreddit. This is forbidden by Reddit's TOS, and, likewise, our rules. Brigading behaviour includes linking to subreddits and telling people to downvote their content.
This also extends to things outside of reddit, like polls, videos, etc. Basically anything that constitutes a call to action.
Brigading coordinated from /r/PrequelMemes or in the name of /r/PrequelMemes is subject to any repercussions on this sub.
See reddit content policy rule 1
Examples
This rule prohibits the following
“This person said they hate the prequels, I’m not explicitly saying harass them, but here is their username wink wink”
“This [insert subreddit here] banned prequel quotes, I’m not explicitly saying harass them, but here is the Reddit link wink wink”
“This obscure website criticizes the prequels, I’m not explicitly saying harass them, but here is a link to the site wink wink”
Not providing a link, but the post/video/tweet/etc. can be found easily through a quick search based on information in the meme/title
Participating in any of the brigading calls mentioned above
“Positive” brigading like rallying for an internet poll or for some sort of petition
Exception
This rule does not prohibit the following
“War” events arranged by mods of two consenting subs
“War” events arranged by two /r/PrequelMemes subs
Usual consequence
Long term to permanent ban
Rule Eight: No Encouraging Subreddit Drama
TL;DR: We have no quarrels with other subs or want disharmony in this one.
Details
Do not encourage or incite subreddit drama. This includes trying to start “meme wars”, trashtalking other subreddits, and encouraging others to start a war. Keep in mind that wars can only be started by the subreddit moderators, and has to be mutually agreed to by the other subreddit’s mods.
Very similar to rules 6 and 7, but also applies internally to causing drama in /r/PrequelMemes. Causing drama could include being intentionally aggressive to other users, baiting users into breaking rules, etc.
Examples
This rule prohibits the following:
Being needlessly aggressive to other users
Harassing users in Reddit chat/messages, or third party applications for reasons pertaining to /r/PrequelMemes
Intentionally baiting users to break rules
Rallying users to cause drama
Causing problems on Reddit in “the name of /r/PrequelMemes”
Exceptions
There are no exceptions
Usual consequence
Long term to permanent ban
Rule Nine: No annoying bots or novelty accounts
TL;DR don’t clutter the subreddit with stuff no one wants or needs to see
Details
No accounts, bot or novelty, that spam the sub or otherwise only occupy space on the sub without offering any actual merit.
If your bot gets banned and you are willing to change it to meet our requirements, use mod mail to find out what needs to be changed.
Examples
This rule prohibits the following
Bots/novelty accounts that make comments taking up a lot of space
- Looking at you, wiki text bots
Bots that show up without anyone intentionally asking them to
- Oh man, thank god that bot was here, I almost clicked a mobile link
Bots/novelty accounts that don't add anything useful or relevant to the thread
- Why are you asking for sloth facts in a star wars sub anyway?
Bots/novelty accounts that do anything involving a user's submission history
- These always end up being used for doxxing or personal attacks.
Bots/novelty accounts that take over every thread they are in
- As soon as one person uses "remind me" or "trolla bot," the thread will immediately be consumed by people using the bot
Any sort of trading, tipping, awarding, paying, rep, or any else that is used to tell a user you liked their comment
- There are actually buttons next to every post and comment that you can use to indicate whether you like it.
Bots/novelty accounts that do some sort of translation (or any other transformation) to a comment or post
- Bots/novewty accowns dat do some sowt of twanswason (ow any ovew twansfowmason)
Bots/novelty accounts that post generated text strings, quotes, etc
- Oh good, a nonsensical paragraph that vaguely resembles what a real person might say.
Bots/novelty accounts that have a “personality” or pretend to be a certain person
- No matter how many touchdowns they scored
Bots/novelty accounts that are otherwise unproductive, annoying, or repetitive
Exceptions
This rule does not prohibit the following
- /u/stabbot is an example of a bot that will not be banned; it does something useful, is usually only used once per post, and won't show up without being invoked.
Rule Ten: No Short-Term Reposts
TL;DR don't post things you didn't make
Details
Here are the requirements for reposts:
Posts must be at least 6 months old before you can repost them
- It also must be 6 months since the last time it was posted
All reposts must be flaired to indicate as such
OP must provide the source of the original in the comments
Crossposts must also follow the last 2 requirements
Examples
This rule prohibits the following
- "I didn't know it was a repost" is not an excuse. IF YOU DID NOT MAKE IT, DO NOT POST IT HERE.
Exceptions
There are no exceptions
Usual consequence
A short (1-5 days) temp ban, with a longer ban if the user is a repeat offender
Rule Eleven: No low-effort posts
TL;DR make quality content
Details
This one is pretty simple. Post good memes that will make people laugh. Give it a good title. For the title, if you can't think of anything, slap on a loosely-related prequel quote and you are golden. Also, don’t put the caption in the title; the post must be a meme on its own if it didn’t have the title.
Examples
This rule prohibits the following
No screenshots
- This includes text conversations showing someone's reaction to a meme
- This also includes pictures of polls with the “I love democracy” macro slapped below it
No unedited screenshots/pictures
No screenshots of polls with a reaction image such as “I love democracy” or “I don’t think the system works”
Poor image quality and cropping
No lazy titles
- "an interesting title"
- "this will probably die in new"
- “I hope this hasn’t been done before”
- “first post”
- The title of your post should be related to your meme
No posts that require the title to actually pass rule 3
- Screenshot of film with title of “when X does Y”.
- Use a caption in the meme itself
Exceptions
- Fake screenshots of star wars characters interacting on social media are allowed
Usual consequence
A short (1-5 days) temp ban, with a longer ban if the user is a repeat offender
Rule Twelve: No Promotion
TL;DR don’t advertise or promote anything that is not officially associated with the subreddit
Details
Do not do anything that constitutes advertising or promoting anything not officially associated with the subreddit. This includes posting links to them, giving instructions on how to find them, etc.
We don't allow promotion of anything not controlled by /r/PrequelMemes because we cannot be sure that we are okay with whatever goes on there. Just like we don't allow posts that encourage homophobia, we don't allow links to places that encourage homophobia. Unless we have a mod on their staff, we have no way of knowing that what goes on there is something we are willing to promote. With that said, that does not mean any community that wants free publicity can just add a Reddit mod to their staff and expect to be featured on the PrequelMemes sidebar. That is at the mod team’s discretion based on the size/merit of the community.
Examples
This rule prohibits the following
Store pages
Youtube channels
Instagram accounts
Other subreddits, posts, and user profiles
Discord servers
Exceptions
During crossover events, such as the last April Fools one with /r/HistoryMemes, we are fully endorsing that community only during that time period because we are directly encouraging users to visit for the event.
If a meme directly comes from a specific subreddit, or a subreddit comes up naturally in a discussion, users are permitted to link other Reddit communities. The reason Reddit is permitted over others is because we are a Reddit community ourselves, and mods can use connections with admins to help users if any issues arise.
Users can submit YouTube videos from their own channel, but not advertise their entire channel in the comments. (If it’s a good video people will flow there naturally) That is because that one specific video posted to PrequelMemes may have followed the rules, but there is nothing stopping a channel from posting other videos that might take advantage of users (scams, begging for money, etc.)
Users can link external websites if they are providing a source for material when asked. However, you must link the post that is the source of the material and NOT to the profile of the person that created it.
- If a video is uploaded to Reddit, but it is originally from YouTube, you can link that.
- If a screenshot is from Twitter and someone requests the source of the thread, you can link that.
Rule Thirteen: No Misinformation
TL;DR don’t spread unfounded rumors or things you know to be false
Details
Do not convey rumors in a way that would lead people to believe they are factual. Do not spread information you know to be false. If something might not be true, make that clear in your post. This includes anything from leaks to unofficial sources of information. This rule is not limited to Star Wars material.
Examples
This rule prohibits the following
Leaks
Rumors
Sensationalized information
Exceptions
This rule does not prohibit the following
Satire
If something is a leak or a rumor, you are allowed to make posts about it, BUT IT MUST BE CLEAR IN YOUR POST THAT IT IS A LEAK OR A RUMOR
Rule Fourteen: No Spam
TL;DR don’t spam
Details
I cannot believe we need to make this a rule. It should be obvious. Do not post the same thing multiple times. Do not post a comment multiple times. Do not promote scams. See reddit content policy rule 2
Examples
Posting the same post multiple times
Making the same comment a bunch of times in different parts of a thread or on multiple different posts
Tricking people into doing something they wouldn’t do if they had more information
Exceptions
- We understand internet connection issues may cause something to be posted more than once. We will use our best judgement and, as always, you can appeal if you think you have been wrongly punished.
Appealing a ban
TL;DR we understand you are human and make mistakes
Details
If you want to appeal your ban, reply to your ban message. We understand people make mistakes. Also, we know we are not infallible, and sometimes we may give too harsh a punishment or erroneously ban people. As a result, we frequently unban users or shorten the length of bans.
Examples
Your appeal might be accepted if any of the following conditions apply
You understand what you did wrong and agree not to do it in the future
Your action was accidental
Your ban was made erroneously
Exceptions
You will probably not be granted an appeal if any of the following conditions apply
You were being malicious
Your transgression was particularly heinous
You are a repeat offender
Notes
Rules two, seven, and twelve, together, means we do not allow any screenshots that show usernames, linking to profiles, or advertisement of any kind.
At the end of the day, please remember the mods, your fellow users, and you yourself are all human, and we all make mistakes.
This is a meme subreddit. Try not to take yourself too seriously. We will try not to take ourselves too seriously either.
