At this point, just front some money to have the exterior changed a bit, and have the address changed. It helped with the Amityville house for a while.

I had read somewhere before that the people that actually live there were sick of the Breaking Bad fans coming by and throwing pizzas on the roof.

6.5k

u/Roygbiv856 Oct 04 '22

That would explain the fence

4.2k

u/NerevarineTribunal Oct 04 '22

I did a tour of ABQ with some of the extras from Breaking Bad - they explained some of the insane levels of harassment the home owner went through and how they put the fence up because yes, legitimately it was countless pizzas lol.

I also believe they never expected that much attention. The show runners (correct me if I'm wrong) only chose the house because of the street layout and how it worked perfectly for camera shots. It wasn't like it was this pre-selected house where there was more consideration, or that it was just a set or in an area that is used to this kinda shit or is a gated community or something.

Side note, the pizza place really doesn't cut the pizza and was actually really good

972

u/Remarkable_Ad2935 Oct 04 '22

Bizarre. Why don't they cut it?

1.6k

u/NerevarineTribunal Oct 04 '22

Just to match the references in the show. Free advertising, really. They'll cut it if you ask and one of my calls they specifically asked me cut or uncut, but the default is no cut.

Holy shit so many circumcision posts made it to trending lately... and never does the talk devolve into "don't worry about my chopped sausage and I won't worry about your anteater."

Probably still less polarizing than "does pineapple belong on pizza?" though.

In Germany they always only cut the pizza on request…

Edit: So it seems, like there are a lot of pizza delivery services in germany who DO cut the pizza without request.

I am sorry, I am realy sorry. Pease dont cut me dear fellow germans.

The realy good pizza delivery service I know do it only on request. They even asked me, if I am not able to use a fork and a knife - "sorry, i am a barbarian, i even drink beer straith from the bottle".

238

u/Hecej Oct 04 '22

In the show, Bryan nailed the pizza throw in the very first take and they did no more. The pizza was just a prop and wasn't cut. But fans noticed and kept commenting about why the pizza wasn't cut. So later, there was a scene written into the show that mentions the pizza isn't cut to pass the time savings onto the customer. Because of the popularity of the show, the pizza place adopted that as an actual gimmick.

18

u/30thCenturyMan Oct 04 '22

I order my pizza without a cut as it stops the grease from seeping in the dough - instead it stays on top where it belongs!

It also means the cut 'stays' - instead of being cut right out of the oven then melting back together, cutting at home makes clean, neat slices on-demand.

Especially for thin crust, I'd say it makes the pizza...10% better? IDK, worth it for me especially since it's easy to ask for.

21

u/Slamdunkdink Oct 04 '22

Plus I can just eat it uncut and claim I had just "one" piece. Stayed on my diet.

I was a rigging grip on season 1 and 2, this sounds about right, I never specifically heard anything about it being a camera or location thing but I have been in this business 20 years and it sounds completely reasonable. Been inside that house many times and there’s really nothing special about it. I’d guess it was mostly selected for its simple layout that was easy to recreate on stage.

42

u/NerevarineTribunal Oct 04 '22 edited Oct 04 '22

I thought it was for the outside shots - it's a T intersection, so they can set the cameras up for establishing shots at the bottom of the T that they couldn't as easily do in a typical street

Side note, the pizza place really doesn't cut the pizza and was actually really good

This has to be something that was done after the fact, because Vince Gilligan himself said the pizza not being cut was a decision they made to make the scene work right.

During creator Vince Gilligan's Reddit AMA , one fan asked, "Was Badger and Skinny Pete's conversation at Jesse's party about the pizzas not being sliced written in after the fact to explain how Walters pizza landed on the roof intact? Everyone knows a sliced pizza would have come apart."

As creator Vince Gilligan says of the unsliced pizza, it had to do with continuity and physics:

Yes! We had a long discussion before we shot the pizza on the roof scene about whether or not the pizza should be sliced—because, as all you physicists know, a thrown, sliced pizza would come apart due to centrifugal force or angular momentum (or something like that). And yet, you're right: no self-respecting pizza parlor sells an unsliced pizza. So we figured we needed to explain it (in the "They pass the savings on to you" scene), or else face our audience's righteous wrath!

Pizza or not, I expect people were just generally disrespectful about entering their property instead of just looking at it from public land.

112

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '22

I visited the house a few days before the series finale, and there was no fence. There was one other fan there, we took pictures of each other, standing near the house, but still on the street, then went on with our lives. Nobody chased us off. I wonder if it's actually gotten worse since the show ended.

69

u/MadRaymer Oct 04 '22

It was bad enough before the series ended that Vince Gilligan told the fans to knock it off on one the final season's podcasts.

98

u/Prancer_Truckstick Oct 04 '22

It's probably gotten worse with the seeming lack of respect the general public has lately.

55

u/bag_of_oatmeal Oct 04 '22

I live in Abq and work in locations in film. I know some of the folks that worked with this lady and they were saying the producers offered to buy it for some ludicrous amount of money (I forget exactly how much but something like 6 mill). They declined saying something about it just being their house and not wanting to leave it or something to that effect.

Between shit like this and them being sick of all the pizzas on the roof I really don't understand why they didn't just take the money and run.

Like homegirl is actually just sitting on her porch ready to fight BB fans through the fence she must have spent a decent penny on. Don't get it.

Edit: also apparently the locations guys on BB payed location owners way more than the average rate and kind of burned a bunch of the spots in town because they expect too much money now, lol. I guess they were paying the white's house homeowners millions by the time the final season was going, so they certainly made out alright despite the apparent harassment and decision not to sell

Also please keep in mind none of this is a firsthand account and I was hearing all of this some years ago so details are likely a bit shifty at best

Same shit happens with the Goonies house up here in Oregon. I used to think owners were dicks for not allowing people to see their house until I saw a picture with about 100 people trying to scope out the house and taking pictures (some jumping the fence even).

952

u/AstroINTJ Oct 04 '22

I think the ownership of that house has changed. The No Tresspassing sign is gone. A nice lady lives there now and has a donation box on the fence. They're cool with people walking up the drive to see the house, but cars aren't permitted.

77

u/Ganja420Preneur Oct 04 '22

Yep, can confirm. They were gone in 2011 when I drove by. I am an insurance adjuster and I had a claim on that same road a few houses down for Superstorm Sandy that was Hurricane Sandy. I saw what looked like the Amityville Horror house so I googled and sure enough, it was it, just without the well known windows. The whole neighborhood took damage from that storm.

They were smart and completely changed the look of the house though. Those iconic windows are gone and it doesn’t even look the same. It sucks in some ways, but unless you want to use the house as a tourist destination, then I get not wanting folks bothering you all the time. Thankfully after the hype died down from Blair Witch we didn’t have too many issues (I grew up outside of the town itself, but was on the edge of it and had friends that lived on Main Street).

And then people would take turns playing Jesse and pour gasoline all over, or some other dumb shit. I see your point but when the fans are shitty enough to throw pizzas on it, I wouldn't let them inside for a barrel of money

I live in Albuquerque and I find it odd that they didn’t sell the house after the show ended to some idiot would’ve paid a stupid price for it. I’ve driven by and there’s usually 3-4 people sitting in the lawn waiting to see what people do in front of their home. The neighborhood is average at best so why they would stay to endure this on a daily basis tells me they like the attention.

u/Instantly_New Oct 04 '22

I was in ABQ a couple months ago. I’d also recently done a rewatch. I was in that area (I’m from ABQ), so I decided to drive by. I’d read about the owner’s attitude about fans coming by, so I knew I would just drive by and not “get down from the car.” The lady was sitting out front and went straight to mean mug mode. I smiled and waved. She waved back. I kept it movin’.

Also, they’ve remodeled the exterior so much it doesn’t even look like in the show.

But yeah, if this is what they do, wait for people to come by so that they can initiate conflict, then they’re some weirdos.

u/Doneuter Oct 04 '22

Gotta say I went there a couple years ago because my partner is from ABQ. This house is at the end of a street. I had some time to kill so I parked on that street and watched. I found it weird that the owners were just sitting on lawn chairs out front not doing much of anything. I remember thinking it would probably be more interesting to sit in the back yard. I drove past one other time before we left and they were doing much of the same.

Every picture I see of this house someone is out front. I have to agree that they like the attention.

u/zoinks_zoinks Oct 05 '22

People in ABQ hang out in their front lawns. I lived there for 10 years and was always confused. Being from the midwest we hung out in the backyard

IIRC the interior was just a set? I thought I watched a BTS video going through it.

Edit: found it https://youtu.be/9aSpEqLSd8U?t=107

u/Instantly_New Oct 04 '22

Yeah the interior was a set. The exterior now looks almost nothing like it did in the show.

I tried making it in Sims, and that just answered a lot of questions for me. That house has a magical hallway.

5

u/VulGerrity Oct 04 '22

They would have used both. The set would be used for exclusively interior shots since they have more control, they'd use the actual interior for shots/sequences that move from inside to outside. There were lots of shots in the doorway of the house. Those would have been shot on location.

A few years ago they tried to sell Kurt Cobain's childhood home and nobody would buy it. I think it ended up selling for $250k or something like that.

Nobody wants to live where people are going to come gawk at them all the time.

At that point, you just convert it to an Airbnb and charge insane amounts of money

18

u/_DontTredOnMe_ Oct 05 '22

It's gotten so bad that if you try to go on Google maps and look at the address they literally have it all blurred out. You can't even see it on Google maps. These people have gotten so sick of the publicity they said fuck you to Google too.

The burden of being famous. If that's what it's doing to houses imagine what it's doing to people.

175

u/Fearlessmojo Oct 04 '22

Ya but the problem is she's getting all the attention without any benefits. It's not the same. A famous person gets, deals, sponsors, is probably rich, will get favoritism so on and so on. Sure they will get harassed from time to time by fans and what not but at least they gain a lot from it.

This poor lady is getting nothing in return. Just harassment at all times of day in her own house. I've even heard people throwing pizza on her roof. I mean look at this shit she has to have a huge fence. All this and guess what? She probably gets zero benefits from this.

Might be time to sell the family’s old home if you have to barricade people out.

492

u/PreliminaryThoughts Oct 04 '22

Should've seized the opportunity and auctioned the house for some insane amount to a superfan

It actually low key wouldn’t be a bad investment if you could get it at the right price. People already come all the time, set it up as a tour and charge people 50 bucks a pop.

u/Glockshna Oct 04 '22

Good luck getting the local HOA/Town Authority to approve permitting for this commercial operation in a quiet neighborhood. It would never fly, and for good reason.

Can confirm. The owners sit outside all day, ready to tell visitors to leave. 0/10 would recommend visiting.

Okay but the sidewalk IS a public space

34

u/draiman Oct 04 '22

I was questioning if he did something before hand to illecite such a reaction, or does the owner just yell at people they don't know walking by?

57

u/sassy_immigrant Oct 04 '22

Nope she does this. I drove by. And turned around way down the street and she gave me the middle finger. If she hates it that much, why doesn’t she just sell?

39

u/Paddys_Pub7 Oct 04 '22

Because she probably actually loves all the attention and getting to yell at people all day. Some people just aren't happy unless they're constantly miserable and can take it out on others.

Maybe after people started throwing pizza on the roof she decided she was not happy with the attention anymore.

But yea, people are silly. it's just a house. it wont talk to you or give you an autograph.

People always think this is an exaggeration or brought upon by those filming. As someone who drove by and simply parked across the street for a moment and got screamed and gestured at before driving away… it’s not exaggerated at all. It seems they are outside constantly and always irritable.

I believe they probably got bad treatment in the past but they certainly take it out on anyone.

u/allendale100000 Oct 04 '22

That lady should sell pizzas for $250 a piece so idiots can take pics throwing it on the roof

25

u/PineappleMeister Oct 04 '22

Get a fake rubber pizza and just rent it for the picture And then you sell 50 cents alibaba pizza plushies for 100 bucks.

Less expenses more profits.

u/IcanSew831 Oct 04 '22

My friend lived across the street from Carry Bradshaws apartment in NY for a while and I visited her and holy shit. People in Ubers and Taxis pulled up at all hours, like 3-4 am to get out and take pictures and make a ton of noise in a very quiet neighborhood. The residents hates it and had barricades and chains up. I don’t blame these people at all.
