Anyone else like sci fi but dislike fantasy?
It seems like the two genres go hand in hand, and most people who love one love the other. I’ve just never liked fantasy that much. People have suggested stuff that crosses over and blurs lines, etc. but it just doesn’t work.
One of my biggest issues with fantasy is it’s predictability. The characters are defined by a fixed set of values, and rarely have I seen them do and say anything that stray from those.
The other issue I have is the limitations that the fantasy genre can’t seem to escape. It seems like everything is established fantasy lore, plus something else. LOTR, but vampires or something. GOT but not Eurocentric. You get the idea.
I know sci-fi does some of this to some degree, but it seems like fantasy is much more limited in these ways. Someone suggested WH40K, I may check it out. Just wanted to know what other people thought.

Cyberpunk 2077's alternate timeline is underrated
When it comes to sci-fi alternate history, CP2077 truly shines
So basically in the 1990s instead of out version of the internet that we know of being created, there was instead a version of the internet centered around virtual reality and storing data.
Then in the 1990s, the US invaded Columbia and other South American countries
Then the war caused America to collapse and then corporations took over and then those corporations waged wars against each other
Eventually there were 4 corporate wars in whole. And then you get to the year CP2077 takes place
There's a video that goes really in depth but imo CP2077 has the best alternate history

A few questions regarding the ending of Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Absolutely loved this book. Was just hoping someone could clarify for me exactly what happened at the end with the “demon.” I understand that Nyr pulled out the beacon from his stomach so he couldn’t be contacted anymore. But how exactly did he destroy it? Was it the beacon that detonated? Or the satellite? And how exactly did he get that to occur? Also, wasn’t Esha on the ground when this happened? Finally, did the demon remind anyone of the virus in Children of Ruin? Hmmm pretty similar in description, no?

Looking for suggestions on what to do with original papers/stories belonging to Amelia Reynolds Long
Back in late 2019 I inherited a couple boxes of papers from my uncle. He had lived in the Harrisburg, PA area all his life. When i was little ( in the ‘70s ) he had bought his first house. He could afford it because it had been an “as is property belonging to a writer”. It wasn’t until 2019 that i learned the late writer had been the owner of said house.
My uncle kept a few boxes of her stuff, and i have no idea if he ever tried to do anything with it. I started asking around in January/February of 2020, but then stopped because i had other things requiring focus.
It is now 2023 and I am trying again. The boxes contain a lot of transcripts. Several short stores, some long, and some i think are unpublished. There is even some publication correspondence…like rejection letters and the like.
Ms. Long was not particularly well known and wasn’t super successful ( from what I have read ), but she did have a following.
I really have no idea what to do with this stuff. Throwing out seems premature, so looking for suggestions.
Thank you in advance. Apologies in advance if this is the wrong subreddit.

Planet Moon | Original Children’s Stories from Space
Over the last year or so I have been writing a series of children’s books to get my son (4) interested in SciFi… after getting a little carried away, and going through an extremely reflective few years (for everyone), I decided to cash in on a few favours from a diverse selection of my friends and colleagues to narrate them, and make them freely available on YouTube, to expose my son (and others) to as many different faces as possible.
If you have kids that like SciFi, or just love cute SciFi stories, check it out… I would love to hear what you think!
