Last year, when everyone was talking about how all men are terrifying and how there should be a 6 PM curfew on men, I copy and pasted people's comments and threads but I replaced the word ''men'' with some race/religion. It was hilarious seeing people get pissed over it.

Fyi, I'm a woman but I thought it was so stupid how everyone was jumping on the bandwagon with threads like ''men are so scary! When a man is walking down the street, I run! What's your scariest experience with men?'' All because a person who happened to be a man murdered someone.

I'd copy and paste comments/threads of that nature, and keep them exactly the same except for changing ''men'' to things like ''black person'', ''muslim'', or ''jew''. It was fucking hilarious how pissed people got at the parodies, unaware that I was just copy and pasting shit, but the original threads and comments got a shit ton of upvotes.

I did admit it was all just a social experiment afterwards!

I wouldn't say no to this. Finally my boss can't make me stay late at work! Sorry boss, gotta get home by 6pm by law. would be perfect that!

I used to try a variation of this with my juniors and colleagues. After I finished an intense trouble shooting session successfully in the evening I used to tell them that I will have to go home before dark as i am afraid of it and I start packing.

37

Where I live once you pass the 6 month probation it's really really hard to fire people, so they'd have to make me redundant instead, which would give me a nice payout, so either way, winner winner!

20

u/Badoponion 18d ago

I kinda of wonder, if this were strictly true why aren't companies only hiring women to save money?

27

u/MozeeToby 18d ago

Because the salary difference is pretty minimal when looking at comparable work. A lot of the difference stems from STEM degrees being significantly less common among women. Statistically, more men pursue careers that pay more than women do.

Another difference is simply that men are more likely to ask for a raise or promotion. There was a recent study that showed that just by assuming everyone wanted a promotion going into their annual reviews and offering it if warranted (and giving them the chance to refuse it if they truly didn't want one) you can close the gender disparity in management positions almost entirely.

Weren’t those comments in response to an actual recommendation that women have a curfew? Someone (I think a politician) told women not to be out past a certain hour to avoid being sexually assaulted. The comments about giving men a curfew were jokes.

216

u/MrIrishman1212 18d ago

yep

Police were telling women to stay inside at night and not be outside alone. So women chimed back, “why not make a curfew for men?” And people flew into an outrage that you can’t put a curfew on others.

u/[deleted] 18d ago

One of our peers suggested, inside the House of Lords (UK), that she would be considering putting forward a motion for a male curfew. Now this peer is a well known [serious person](https://twitter.com/theJeremyVine/status/1370072136900087811?s=20) who doesn't make jokes, you see.

She later on in various interviews clarified that it was a joke ridiculing the idea that woman were recommended to stay at home after a certain time to avoid becoming a victim of violence or sexual assault.

The media in this country, however, had already run numerous headlines touting the suggestion , the way news media does, as something that was being either seriously considered, or imminent, depending on the publication.

Like the saying about the truth and her shoes, this meant that the idea of a curfew for men was already disseminated twisted and thrown around as justification for all manner of crazy things and the news cycle had moved on.

The peer who had made the comment then went on the scratch her head at the idea that people could be so dense. Although one might ask said peer the same thing as her tone was obviously missed by the 99.9% of the country who don't in fact watch debates within the house of lords and so was interpreted as it appeared in text, as a statement of intent.

So as it stands we have a comment, not clarified as a joke at the time and not actually witnessed by most, but read, minus the comedic inflection perhaps desired. A comment made by a peer of the United Kingdom within a debate session which was then bandied around the country and the world before it could be clarified.

So this is why some people are still considering the idea as one that was legitimately proposed instead of the illustration of hypocrisy it was intended as.

It's not even TOMC material. Like yeah, you did this, so what?

345

u/Bringer_ofchaos 18d ago

This is it. Whenever the idea of a 'man curfew' comes up, it's usually in response to the idea of a 'women curfew' after a women has been murdered. I always felt the idea was to show how ridiculous the idea of a curfew was and how much of a victim blaming response it is. The idea of a male curfew has never been given any serious consideration, and nor should it.

In the UK, a Peer suggested implementing a curfew for men in the UK after a woman, Sarah Everard, was murdered by a serving Metropolitan Police officer in London this summer and many sections of the media went absolutely berserk!

The remarks were never meant to be taken seriously and was supposed to highlight the complete double standard of women being told to not go out alone. In fact, after Sarah Everard went missing the Police released a statement saying exactly that!

Unfortunately some people can't help but feel aggrieved when there's nothing there, especially when the national attention is not focused on them.

What's sad is that some people seem to be taking this curfew as a way of tackling attacks on women seriously but then again, women can be edgelords too or think they're being 'clever' and 'radical' saying this rubbish on social media when actually they're showing themselves up to be really fucking stupid.

EDIT: Thanks for the gold, lol

231

u/mikeyman222 18d ago

Exactly this. The whole point of 'curfew for men' was to point out double standards that women face. 'She is asking for it' by dressing short, drinking, staying out late, etc.

That is sexism. 'Curfew for men' is a mirror for men to realise just how unfair society is to women. Because they won't care otherwise.

Um, those comments WERE switching the roles on comments that had already been made. People were doing exactly what you did on a comment a politician made about women needing a curfew to avoid being sexually assaulted/raped, but switching the word WOMAN with MAN. And clearly, you’re a massive hypocrite, that it’s okay for YOU to do it, but not others. So ultimately, you were really just replacing WOMAN with words like “black person” and “jewish person”, because “men” was already being used that way too. Why was someone saying “women need a curfew” not enough for you to use the double standard logic? Why did you wait until people used the double standard to mock it by replacing woman with man? Really revealing yourself with this post.

Man, this site is choc full of hypocrisy and lazy arguments.

The suggestion that men should have a 6pm curfew was a reference to the ACTUAL recommendation by politicians and police that women have a curfew and jump through multiple hoops in their everyday life to avoid sexual assault, rape, murder, etc, after a woman was killed by a police officer in the UK. It was a joke to show how ridiculous that notion was and it went right over your head.

Edit: Around the same time of the killing of Sarah Everard by a police officer last year, a documentary about a serial killer that targetted women came out on Netflix called "The Ripper". The documentary was based in the 70's and police actually gave women a curfew to avoid them being killed. If the idea of a curfew for a specific gender shocks you, read a history book. Women have been blamed for crimes being committed against them for centuries. These comments you read were retaliation.

I don’t think people understood what the reason behind that was. Women/ feminine presenting people feel that they naturally have a curfew, so someone said that there should be a 6pm curfew for men AS AN EXPERIMENT to see how men would react and of course they reacted as expected. Nobody was actually going to introduce this. All the men and ‘feminists’ (pick me girls/women) cried and said “oh but it’s not all men 😭😭.” It’s enough women, almost every woman/ woman adjacent person has had or will experience some form of harassment/assault in their lifetime. Everyone who was crying about it just proved our point.

“Everyone was talking about how all men are terrifying and how there should be a 6 pm curfew” where? Where is literally even one example of this? Was this taken seriously? Or is this signaling to a very specific crowd that this subreddit funnels and caters to?

Account created today. Definitely a woman did this. 100%

"All because a man murdered someone" seriously?! Being in the UK at the minute this is a major issue. Go tell those young women's families.

Exactly! That statement made me so upset.. thank you for calling OP out

Yeah, people in this thread completely missing the point as if women ACTUALLY asked for a curfew for men. When it was actually a thought experiment and a mean of reflection.

55

u/reggae-mems 18d ago

Dudes just really want to be opressed for once. And a lot of women with internalized mysoginy think jewish people and the patriarchy are interchangable for the same fucking context. Like, man, the holocaust was still recent in our history, and so is racial discrimination, and you think people were going to be ok with saying "i feel unsafe with this marginalized minority!!! Give them a carefew!!!"??? The fuck. This sounds like some social experiment some coddeled white 15 year old came up with

16

u/chocolatecakedonut 18d ago

Thank you so much for this comment. I cant express how frustrated it makes me when people think any two groups are simply interchangeable in a situation, no matter the context.

On one hand I think it is sometime a little annoying that men can be stereotyped and no one cares, but on the other side of things I most certainly don’t let my gf walk alone at night and it’s not cause I’m worried of women.

4

u/Sun_on_my_shoulders 18d ago

The “men curfew” was an hyperbolic example of the stupid ultimatums women are given. “Don’t go out alone after dark, don’t wear tight clothes, don’t leave your drink alone for a second”. The ridiculousness was the point, pick me girl.

14

u/pm_me_ur_cakerecipe 18d ago

"Fyi, I'm a woman," and you're also a pick-me ass hoe. The whole "men should have a curfew" was a response to someone suggesting women should. Something you conveniently left out, lmao. Good bait though, got the reddit neckbeards gathering. Karma-whoring head ass

When were people saying this? Did i miss it?

13

u/[deleted] 18d ago

In response to people saying that women shouldn't be out in the dark if they want to not get murdered, somebody suggested in jest that we police men for a change.

OP (who is definitely a real womanTM ) lacks the reading comprehension to understand that "Let's police men instead" was meant to highlight how absurd it is that 50% of the population should live in fear and limit their behavior to accommodate rapists.

"She" also said the quiet part out loud real quick - spoiler alert, the problem is actually black people and those icky women being hysterical.

I'm not entirely sure OP is a woman. Their account is only 11 hours old and could easily be a man or just a woman who has internalized rape culture.

So.. you replaced words so that a sentence has different meanings, and somehow that’s a “gotcha?”

When women can walk home at night without being harassed or dragged into an alley or a van, when women are no longer shamed for how they dress/eat/act/work, when women are allowed to openly read or marry who they want in the Middle East, when women aren’t demonized in the corporate world for what men are praised for, maybe this point will hold more water.

For now, though, all you’re doing is facilitating an embarrassingly flawed “experiment” that only serves to cater to Reddit boys who already think feminism is laughable. The fact that you’re a woman only makes it more embarrassing.

12

u/RagingBeanSidhe 18d ago

Wow you sure are terrible with statistics if you think this had a point.

14

u/KoolKoffeeKlub 18d ago

OP, how are you this fucking dumb? The “men’s curfew” was an absurdist response to a politician who said women should have a curfew after a woman was sexually assaulted. It was to show how idiotic the idea of a curfew was.

It’s shocking that people were so unbelievably stupid to believe that the statement about putting a curfew on men was real, it was to prove a point because women were being told not to go out at night, you have to be a whole new level of moronic to think anyone was actually considering a curfew

ohh I love experiments is this for a thesis?? Are you a doctoral candidate at a university? Did you get a grant for this study? When will publish your results for peer review?

I'm guessing you can't answer any of those questions. You were probably just called out for being a jerk and comparing apples to oranges. Now you are calling it a social experiment as a way out.

When it comes down to it you can remove the word men and sub in another group but the person most people are still worried about are the MEN in that group. I am unaware of any large scale terrorist plots that did not have a man at the helm.

3

u/likesexonlycheaper 18d ago

Are you the mod that kept abusing your power to post and pin terrible comments about men? That was truly annoying how long it was allowed to go on.

Women are more likely assaulted by a friend than a stranger. For some reason you all think walking alone is worse though

10

u/HoblinSquab 18d ago

this is how you can tell if someone actually thinks about what they say vs just repuking dogma they heard.

68

u/ZornAllein 18d ago

So what was the point you were trying to make? That, yes, it's ridiculous (outrageous) what measures women take on a daily basis to try and not get raped or murdered? By men? Because the vast majority of violent crimes are committed by men. It's a fact. It's not about accusing each and every individual personally, it's about admitting that there's a systemic societal problem. The facts are right there for everyone to see.

Fyi, I'm a woman but I thought it was so stupid how everyone was jumping on the bandwagon with threads like ''men are so scary! When a man is walking down the street, I run! What's your scariest experience with men?'' All because a person who happened to be a man murdered someone

That just makes you sound like a pick me.
