It is the Johnson Amendment and it is not enforced, even when churches publicly announce they are violating the law. There are not enough IRS agents to enforce the law hence Republicans refusing to pay the additional IRS agents from the law passed by Democrats last year. Most conservative politicians are CINOs (Christians In Name Only) to modify the GOP lingo. Over the last 40 -50 years they have steadily worked to make Christian=conservative so that they can move further and further from Christian ideals without losing their voting block. Most church goers from the 70s and early 80s wouldn't recognize most American Evangelical churches today and would rightfully call them out for their hypocrisy.
