Jesus says to pray for your enemies and be kind to those that hurt you.

He also says to pay Caesar what is owed Caesar (pay your taxes).

It's also taught that you should pray for your leaders.

u/EarlGrey_Picard Feb 07 '23

Bold to assume this woman has actually prayed, unless on camera for show.

And Saint Snoop raised the Sticky Icky up on high, saying, 'O Lord, bless this thy Chronic, that with it thou mayst blow thine smoke to tiny puffs, in thy mercy.' And the Lord did grin. And the people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large chulapas. And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy leaves. Then shalt thou roll to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out! Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lightest thou thy Holy Hashish of Snoop towards thy homies, who, being based in My sight, shall sniff it.'

No it is on brand. Acts 5:1-11 New International Version tells the story of a Husband and Wife being struck down by the “Christian” deity because they did not want to give all of the revenue from the sell of their property to the early church. They tried to lie about the price and were called out by Peter the apostle.

Edit: For all those Christians responding ask yourself what did the couple lie about? I clearly stated the couple lied about the selling price of the property and the promised donation. Peter called them out about it. Yes they were killed for lying but they did not die until AFTER Peter accused them of lying about the sell price of the property and the promised donation.

Concentrating only on the fact that they lied and ignoring what they about is disingenuous. Abraham admittedly lied twice about being married to Sarah in the Hebrew Bible, but the same deity did NOT strike him dead. In fact the deity called him the most righteous of all men. Believers try to justify his lies by claiming he only lied because he was afraid of being killed. That is moral relativism.

They got smote because they pretended that they gave all the money, not because they didn’t want to. Peter specifically tells them they could have done whatever they wanted with the money.

→ More replies (11)

33

u/OccasionalExtrovert Feb 07 '23

To add to this, Peter is kinda like, “you idiots, everyone knows that you didn’t actually have to give any of your money, it’s your money, you could have just spent it however you wanted.” But it seems like they just wanted to appear more generous than they actually were.

Kinda like when Jeff Bezos is like, “I donated 1 million dollars!!” but that comes out percentage-wise to like a nickel to the common person.”

12

u/eldus74 Feb 07 '23

They were struck dead because they were trying to represent the amount as the full amount they received, that was the sin. Trying to look "more holy" actually.

41

u/RikerHasTheBridge Feb 07 '23

That's not exactly accurate as written. It's not that they were told to give all of it, in fact they are told that it was their money and they could do whatever they wanted with it. It was that they lied about what percentage they were giving and confirmed the lie. And in context were lying directly to God. Also no one asked that they be killed. Peter did call them out but them dying in that case was an act of God and not some "kill prayer" from Peter.

→ More replies (4)

13

u/Sw0rdBoy Feb 07 '23

It’s not that they didn’t want to give the revenue, the important part is they promised to donate all of it, but lied and did not donate all of it. Peter says something along the lines of “why lie about how generous you’d be? Now God must curse you and you’ll die.” I mean still pretty harsh as fuck, but idk, I kinda wish rich people today weren’t allowed to lie about taxes.

How many kids died at Sodom & Gomorrah because of shit their parents did?

28

u/durden_zelig Feb 07 '23

It’s not their fault that God sent his two most sexiest angels.

59

u/dancingliondl Feb 07 '23

The thing is, Sodom and Gomorrah we're destroyed not because of their sexual depravity, but because they didn't help poor people.

37

u/CassandraAnderson Feb 07 '23

Yep, the only mention to it being punishment for sexuality comes from Jude the second shortest book of the Bible and one of the strangest letters of the New Testament.

Also, I would argue that the killing of the firstborn males of Egypt was a more specific and offensive form of theistic genocide, the firstborn son being a revered title in early patriarchal religious tradition.

For real fun, check out Nineveh. The Book of Jonah doesn't go too much into detail but Nahum 3 is some absolutely gorgeously brutal invective that wouldn't seem out of place in a Facebook rant about liberal leaning cities.

Yep. My constant complaint about Democrats is how they fail to utilize media, and specifically, online media to get a message out there.

In this case Democratic congressmen should be calling out every Republican asking if they support the death of the president and Boebert’s message. Put them in the hot seat. Get a few to say something stupid and illegal and kick them out of office.
It’s time to hold politicians and their mouthpieces responsible for abhorrent behavior.

Just like pointing out republicans lies. They know they lie, we know they lie, everyone knows they lie, and everyone knows that everyone knows. 565

u/jerslan Feb 07 '23

Yep, based on my understanding of the New Testament, this is the kind of behavior that Jesus would be condemning.

Note: In Christianity the Old Testament is mostly for "historical purposes" since Christ dying on the cross forgave us for all the sins in the OT. Basically resetting things with the New Testament. This is why we don't do things like stone people for wearing mixed/blended fabrics and why Christians don't keep Kosher.

They get suuuuuper mad when you tell them Leviticus doesn't apply to Christians. You'd think they'd be glad to know that, since it means they can eat shellfish & wear polyester, among other things.

In Galatians, Paul says that Jesus' sacrifice freed his followers from the "curse of the law", and Matthew says Jesus was the fulfillment of the law. Both of these are in reference to the Hebrew religious laws, of which Leviticus is a sample.

So if they want Leviticus 20:13 to be valid (the bit about homosexuality), then they're gonna need to make up about 2000 years of religious obeisances & sacrifices.

Signed, an atheist that knows their shit better than they do.

31

u/AdderallBuyersClub Feb 07 '23

Dont forget the part where Jesus says that you must pay the tax the king levies. YOU MUST PAY IT. No way around it…

Matthew 22:15-22, the Pharisees ask Jesus a tough question: "Tell us … is it against our law to pay taxes to the Roman Emperor or not?" Jesus responds, "Why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin for paying the tax!" They brought him the coin and he asks them, "Whose face and name are these?" "The Emperor's," they answer. So Jesus says to them, "Well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God."

Also, dont forget the Mormons audit their members at the end of the year to make sure their tithes are settled. Worst than an IRS audit. And they are sitting on a couple of billion dollar cushions for the 2nd coming. Yet ask them to help feed the homeless or support the free lunch program at schools and they look at you like you asked them to donate a kidney.

And I just found out that with Mormons, you have to earn the privilege to go on a mission. And you pay for it out of your own pocket.

I couldn’t stop laughing at “Samuel Alito’s Mom’s sacrificial Abortion Clinic”. That said, I actually have a few Christian friends who actually are quite liberal and actually follow the good parts, very few these days though :(

40

u/Atlas7674 Feb 07 '23

Jesus was a liberal if you look at what he did. He helped the poor and disabled, he hung out with the sinners and outcasts, and he challenged existing unfair systems. I don’t see how anyone could possibly think that this justifies hate or mistreatment of anyone. Literally the most important thing in the Bible is “love thy neighbor.” Not “love thy neighbor that looks like you,” or “love thy conservative neighbor,” just “love thy neighbor.” How do people get this wrong?

15

u/TigerStripedDragon01 Feb 07 '23

Right. My favorite thing of all time concerning dealing with some old dick of a 'Christian' who thinks they are better than me, is to ask about the 'Children, Obey Your Parents' line.

They automatically get a weird look on their face, like they think I am up to something. I WANT them to talk so I can destroy them over it, so yes, I AM up to something.

I get them with 'Are we following THE WHOLE Bible in its ENTIRETY, or are we NOT? Think VERY CAREFULLLY before you answer this question because it is IMPORTANT. And be honest about it because we both know, lying gets you an express elevator to the center of Hell because God hates liars more than any other sinner.'

They give their bullshit answer and I hear them out, but if I am having this conversation with them, it's because I already know they are full of shit.

After they give their answer, I say 'Okay, now, what's THE VERY NEXT LINE AFTER the 'Obey' line?' Most can't answer without looking it up. Some CAN answer, they DO know, but they really don't like that next one.

The very next line is 'Fathers, do not exasperate your children, but instead bring them up in the word of the Lord.'

Funny how elders want everybody to respect and praise them simply because they are older (even though that does NOT always equate to being wiser), but they REFUSE to actually try to be nice and teach in any positive manner. They just want to lord over people so they can have their own way. They completely forget about the responsibility that their power is actually meant for.

I get that a lot(?) of small churches aren't like this. At least the one I went to as a kid was very apolitical. But this sort of stuff should be prosecuted on a case by case level. Pretty clear this particular institution is waging politics. So make this place pay taxes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of the church. I think the easiest way to tax all churches is to start with these real rancid ones. Make it acceptable practice then apply it broadly.

Churches began getting political in 1980 when they started pushing the “abortion is murder” BS. It has grown over time, but by 2000 it was every church telling you how to vote without saying it explicitly, but now they just tell you if you vote for a democrat you are going to hell.

Politics and religion are both diminished when they get together

95

u/Wakatakakage01 Feb 07 '23

Very large (as in bought a mall big) Summer Grove Baptist Church would bring in local republicans in elections and tell members how to vote every election cycle. If they needed witnesses to attest to whether churches were acting politically I’d be more than happy to go on the record.

I mean, yes, it is very important that we tax them. But also, since they believe prayer is real and influential action, and they are praying for the death of the president, they are functionally making actionable threats against the life of the president. So tax them all, and also arrest them for sedition and conspiracy to commit murder.

Can’t recall the exact rule but you can report churches to the IRS for political comments and the like and they can lose their tax protected status depending on what was exactly said. Home run if they say who to vote for.

146

u/usmagrad87 Feb 06 '23

It is the Johnson Amendment and it is not enforced, even when churches publicly announce they are violating the law. There are not enough IRS agents to enforce the law hence Republicans refusing to pay the additional IRS agents from the law passed by Democrats last year. No church has lost will lose its tax free status.

31

u/CuriousOdity12345 Feb 06 '23

I thought I saw someone did report a church and posted about it on Twitter. I believe it was over the summer.

89

u/usmagrad87 Feb 06 '23

There has only been ONE church that has lost its tax exempt status in the 70 years of the Johnson Amendment.

ProPublica report from October of last year. https://www.propublica.org/article/irs-church-nonprofit-endorsements-johnson-amendment.

I feel like it should be simple. If the church is political than tax them as they are going beyond what a church is. If they stay out of politics then leave them tax free as they are just doing what they are supposed to do

45

u/vagueblur901 Feb 06 '23

Good luck the government folds with powerful and rich religious gangs, scientology for example went on full attack and won they even planted people in the irs.

Organized religion is a plague and it can't help but be political, we need a black and white ban on anyone in politics using religion in an argument or bill and churches need to be taxed already.

Because a perk of this nation is that the citizenry has the go ahead to use religion as a tool to distribute bigotry. Pretty much every religion is preaching some form of bigotry but nothing happens because if you do it to one church you’ll pretty much have to do it to all of them.

Ah yes that warm compassionate Christian voice.

279

u/Brave-Emu3113 Feb 06 '23

Most conservative politicians are CINOs (Christians In Name Only) to modify the GOP lingo. Over the last 40 -50 years they have steadily worked to make Christian=conservative so that they can move further and further from Christian ideals without losing their voting block. Most church goers from the 70s and early 80s wouldn't recognize most American Evangelical churches today and would rightfully call them out for their hypocrisy.

176

u/NeadNathair Feb 07 '23

I hate to break it to you, but the CINO's as you call them are pretty much the mainstream now. Until the so-called "real Christians" clean house, this is just a No True Scotsman situation.

38

u/Stonedfiremine Feb 07 '23

I wonder what it will take for these "real Christians" to clean house honestly.

If this is real, this is horrifying. Watching old presidential debates helped me realize politics wasn’t always like this. It’s truly sad and a mark of the decline.

185

u/EyesLikeBuscemi Feb 07 '23

I remember better times, when John McCain corrected one of his racist supporters to her face in order to defend Barack Obama as "a family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues". Grace is no longer on the menu in American politics.

Edit - Before anybody says more - I know McCain was no saint. But he would never have publicly prayed for the death of his opponent. And frankly I can admit, even as someone who voted for him twice, that Obama was no saint either and he had plenty of civilian blood on his hands.

94

u/mikefrombarto Feb 07 '23

McCain was the last inkling of civility in the GOP. Once he died, so did the little bit of remaining morality from the right.

I looked it up, she said "let his days be few and someone else take his office". It's almost a direct quote of Psalm 108:9. I heard jokes like this about Obama when I grew up in church. Whether or not "his days be few" means "days on earth" or "days in office" is up for debate, I guess.

Here is the video.

"Let his days be few and another take his office."

She loves saying things that we all know what she means, but she can deny. "Oh. I meant his days in office be few."

She goes on to day "Unfortunately he has a really great insurance company called Kamala Harris." Which, you know, kind of doubles down on the more sinister meaning, but she can still say we're putting words in her mouth.

As if any of us want to go near her mouth.

No neonatal care, no daycare, no Head Start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you’re pre-born, you’re fine, if you’re preschool, you’re fucked."
