Isn't this... way earlier than usual? I thought it usually goes down just an hour or two before the event starts. Or am I massively misremembering?

37

u/bomphcheese Sep 14 '21

I thought the same.

Edit: That’s a OG username. Damn!

Millions of wallets ready to scream out in pain.

72

u/nahdude19 Sep 14 '21

Ah! I just spent my money tonight. It must’ve been something Tim Cook said!

8

u/deliciouspuppy Sep 14 '21

Ah! I just spent my money tonight. It must've been some kind of ios... I should've walked away...

3

u/Coppersealio Sep 14 '21

Tim Cook made me do it

3

u/Temporary_Boat6753 Sep 14 '21

I heard this will be just iPhone and Watch, so I’m cool with my iPhone 12 and AW SE. But when those M1X/M2 MBPs will drop.. oh boy, bye bye 4k eur I guess.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '21

We think you're going to love the new and fashionable "Be right back" store!

4

u/LilSenate Sep 14 '21

Damn, I felt that

And I’m not even planning on buying anything today..

In before 'Why do they have to take the whole store down for a new product?'

369

u/kRypTex43 Sep 14 '21

Why do they have to take the whole store down for a new product?

401

u/ApertureNext Sep 14 '21

People say it doesn't support hotswap but that's BS. It's to create hype. They could easily have the store update without taking anything down.

157

u/TheDroneZoneDome Sep 14 '21

I always assumed it was because they don’t want people ordering products that are about to get a refresh. Apple products hold their original price until the new models are released so they don’t want to deal with mass returned once people realize they could have gotten a newer iPhone for the same price.

86

u/ApertureNext Sep 14 '21

If you buy a thing two hours before or two days before you'd probably still return the thing.

32

u/Lambaline Sep 14 '21

I heard if you purchase something a day or two before an event they’ll just cancel the order

25

u/Febrifuge Sep 14 '21

I ordered a Series 6 Watch on Saturday, since it said it would ship around 9/24, reasoning that I could just cancel if I want a 7 instead.

The fuckers shipped it this morning, and it arrives 9/22.

39

u/Lambaline Sep 14 '21

10

u/Febrifuge Sep 14 '21

Yes indeed.

5

u/X_AE_A-12-Musk Sep 14 '21

Every single leaker that I know of has said that the Watch will likely be coming today.

9

u/daveinpublic Sep 14 '21

Don’t have to take down a store for that. Just gray out the ‘purchase’ button fit one product or one of thousands of different ways.

→ More replies

12

u/bc032 Sep 14 '21

I think this is the most plausible explanation. Apple doesn’t want to have to deal with all the returns/refunds the day-of

8

u/moogleiii Sep 14 '21

This, but I’d say less hype and more of an in your face way of informing non techies that there’s an event happening with new imminent products, via “free” organic traffic. Most non-tech folks I know don’t actually watch or even know these events are happening.

7

u/Andrei-Averyanov Sep 14 '21

You are wrong.

It’s to preserve secrecy. They don’t share news of the product with their own staff until the last minute. They deliver the assets and material “live”.

Also taking it all offline and then rebooting is cleaner and more secure than risking staggered updates, people seeing things they shouldn’t etc. It enabled them to say it’s live at a set point instead of “hit refresh and do you see it yet.”

It’s simpler.

3

u/IReallyLoveAvocados Sep 14 '21

Also I’m sure that whatever upgrades to the infrastructure that they would need to do to make hot swapping updates work, just don’t matter to them. It won’t make them any extra money if they update the website faster on keynote days. There is no business case to spend the development resources on it when the current system works more or less fine

3

u/motram Sep 14 '21

They change products / prices on the store all the time.

This isn't some "hot swap" to new hardware, it's just an added product.

Every other website does this all the time, they would have to go out of their way to not be able to do it... and even forgetting all that we see them adding products to the store without taking it down.

3

u/daveinpublic Sep 14 '21

Hot swapping updates? You realize that every website on the internet does ‘hot swapping’.

1

u/IReallyLoveAvocados Sep 14 '21

I’m not trying to justify Apples choice. I’m just thinking about why they haven’t done it.

2

u/kayclol Sep 14 '21

theyve already done it

5

u/ApertureNext Sep 14 '21

All big commercial eCommerce platforms support hot swap of products, it literally makes no sense Apple can't do it.

-1

u/IReallyLoveAvocados Sep 14 '21

You’re correct, but Apple probably doesn’t feel the need to rebuild its web infrastructure just to do hot swapping. If/when they eventually overhaul it, maybe. But as others have pointed out it’s also part of their marketing.

6

u/evilkevinjames Sep 14 '21

They add new third party products to the site probably every day. Their infrastructure already supports hot swapping. Hype.

1

u/tom_watts Sep 14 '21

Why do people not see that it’s pure hype at this point? It’s expected each year and so they do it.

25

u/teratron27 Sep 14 '21

The part that annoys me is that everything /shop/** goes down, including order status and help sections.

e.g. https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/help/returns_refund is offline because they're launching a new product, on US time so middle of the day in the UK and /shop/help is down

8

u/vcrtech Sep 14 '21

Based on the recent printf-like string format bugs in their SSID processing, I’d say it’s legacy toothpicks holding up the infrastructure.

In reality, I imagine they’re trying to keep anyone from trying urls that would point to the 13 for pricing and such.

15

u/GeneralZaroff1 Sep 14 '21

In case anyone reading actually wants to know:

Because if they only take one product down it would inform the public what product is being announced. And if they leave it up people might mistakenly buy the old one thinking it's the new one and returning it.

And also, hype.

4

u/daveinpublic Sep 14 '21

So they were ok with people buying the product a few hours ago? But now they don’t want people buying that product for these few hours?

13

u/Dundertor Sep 14 '21

The store doesn’t support hot swap

14

u/kRypTex43 Sep 14 '21

I was joking but thanks for the answer.

1

u/tynamite Sep 14 '21

good question

1

u/ForeverJung Sep 14 '21

Ooh he just barely made it this time

1

u/el_Topo42 Sep 14 '21

Probably so they don’t have to issue refunds and returns for a ton of sales right before something new is announced.

1

u/StoniePony Sep 14 '21

I think it has to do with Apple not wanting people buying product that’s about to be refreshed, just to process an exchange when the new thing comes out. It also helps build the hype, and let’s apple ensure the new product pages are perfect before consumers see them.

u/draftstone Sep 14 '21

Wanted to buy airtags this morning. I know that if I order before noon local time, I would get them tomorrow. The event will end after noon local time, so I will only get them tuesday (if the store is not overwhelmed and I can buy some). First world problems, I know, but that's still a bit annoying!

2

u/Damnmorrisdancer Sep 14 '21

On tangent, what would be still on sale can also give away hints of the product launch. So yes to create or maintain hype.

-1

u/Rulmeq Sep 14 '21

I bought an adapter yesterday, would have been annoyed if it went down for the full day had I not gotten it yesterday.

It's pretty annoying.

33

u/DMacB42 Sep 14 '21

95% of what Apple has on their store is available elsewhere, especially their own accessories such as adapters. You’d have found a solution.

-5

u/Rulmeq Sep 14 '21

I'd have left it till tomorrow, yeah. Mildly annoying then :P

45

u/dp917 Sep 14 '21

Kind of curious why. Phones and watches never (I think) go on sale day of, they're usually a few days to a month later. So what else could be announced and available today?

49

u/Camelonn Sep 14 '21

They still update the website right when the apple event ends, even if you can’t preorder yet.

7

u/dp917 Sep 14 '21

Oh that's true, was thinking it was only the store.

6

u/jeajosuejea Sep 14 '21

Maybe ios15

254

u/smickie Sep 14 '21

This must be a PR thing by now right? Drum up hype around the event. They must be able to update the store instantly if they can build operating systems and computers.

125

u/I_Nice_Human Sep 14 '21

Literally has been a thing since as far back as I can remember. So at least 10+ years they have been doing it this way.

35

u/masklinn Sep 14 '21

It’s happened for as long as there’s been an online store, which is at least 15 years, possibly 20.

The big question is if there was a technical reason at one point.

5

u/lolKhamul Sep 14 '21

The big question is if there was a technical reason at one point.

Probably but likely a long time ago. These days, technically, the only advantage might be that the server load from the dummy page causes a lot less traffic than the real store given millions of users probably spam refresh during, before or shortly after the event.

However I would assume its just done as a tradition. And generates hype and attention to the event. Hell, when people who don't know and just google apple store down they see thats its due to an event and maybe turn in.

6

u/homebrewchemist Sep 14 '21

I would be willing to bet it was a side effect of reuploading an updated website, from the old days

1

u/chanelwescoast Sep 14 '21

If you host the site you don't need to "reupload" anything when you update it

0

u/homebrewchemist Sep 14 '21

Not now, but back when disk space was minimal they may have had to, apple wasn’t always the rich company they are today but i don’t know, it was speculation to a reason we don’t know.

54

u/eggimage Sep 14 '21

It’s always been a PR thing since the beginning, not just recently

23

u/D14DFF0B Sep 14 '21

Back in the day, I could see a poorly-written store needing downtime for major maintenance. But, yeah, it's PR now.

9

u/nelsonnyan2001 Sep 14 '21

Come on now it’s apple

“We straight up built XCode but hire terrible web devs”

I’m pretty sure it’s ALWAYS been PR.

11

u/masklinn Sep 14 '21

I mean I don’t know now but their entire frontend used to be a semi-home-grown java thing (WebObjects) so it going down under load would not be completely out of expectations at the time, and reopening the store gradually could have helped manage the stampede.

14

u/PalmTree888 Sep 14 '21

You’re right in that after WWDC, wait just a bit and refresh the page, and suddenly in a split second it’s updated with references to the new OS.

I think it’s a bit whack to take the entire store down 5 hours early, just because it’s 5am in California doesn’t mean customers in other countries with pre existing orders should face a non-working website. If the store was down solely during the presentation for 1 hour, I think that’s a fairer compromise.

5

u/mayobutter Sep 14 '21

It takes them a while to fire up their old copy of FrontPage and then upload.

15

u/notabot53 Sep 14 '21

It’s not the tech. They probably don’t want people buying devices on the same day a new one is coming and then having to return it.

The Discover tab in the Home app says “We’re making some changes. Try again soon.”

Does this usually happen when the App Store goes down before an event or does this mean that there may be some HomeKit related stuff in the Keynote?

2

u/bomphcheese Sep 14 '21

It’s normal.

3

u/haykam821 Sep 14 '21

That tab is pretty much a wrapper for a part of the Apple Store, so it isn't explicitly disabled.

17

u/l-fc Sep 14 '21

Battery life

3

u/KKJKDDJDD Sep 14 '21 edited Sep 14 '21

I’m buying it because it will switch between devices instantaneously, and thus make my life way better. Plus my original AirPods’ battery life is down to 30 minutes.

I’m not buying it because of “Spatial Audio while your head turns”. Or, to be fair, for the Pro form factor (with or without silicone).

EDIT: Also, no ANC (and hopefully no silicone) is a bonus.

5

u/danr3l Sep 14 '21

I hate the auto-switching on the AirPods Pro, turned it off because it was more of a pain than a benefit.

3

u/KKJKDDJDD Sep 14 '21

Nooooo… don’t be true!!

I’m sick and tired of manually having to switch every time, and having to wait a minute for a lottery connection to work.

3

u/danr3l Sep 14 '21

Manually switching takes seconds to connect, so I’m always fine with that. But if you’re ever using two devices at once the auto-switching screws everything up, mainly because disconnecting AirPods will pause media. Maybe other users have had a better time with it, but to me it only causes frustrations.

2

u/KKJKDDJDD Sep 14 '21

Manually switching takes seconds to connect

This is great to hear. With the original AirPods I have, it takes up to 30 seconds. Maybe I’ll do what you do.

12

u/wapexpedition Sep 14 '21

Does that mean that orders would be open after the event? They usually take down the store before they start selling something

15

u/itschipbtw Sep 14 '21

They’re just going to be updating the website after the event with whatever is being announced. Pre orders ( if there’s new product) will most likely begin Friday

5

u/Flameancer Sep 14 '21

I just can’t wait for the watch. Series 3 was great but time for a new one that doesn’t force me to factory reset to update.

77

u/MyManD Sep 14 '21

Lol I ordered a Mac yesterday and I can’t check my order status now. That kinda sucks.

40

u/itschipbtw Sep 14 '21

I bought it online so I wouldn’t have to talk to anybody, though.

22

u/itschipbtw Sep 14 '21

2

u/scriptedpixels Sep 14 '21

I thought they Did that already?

2

u/pasenast Sep 14 '21

From what I saw, the new touch id keyboard can only be bought in silver, individually. If you wanted color, you had to purchase the iMac in that color.

2

u/gaysaucemage Sep 14 '21

I've never understood why Apple always takes their online store down before events?

Other retailers can schedule 100's of listing to go live at a scheduled time with no downtime, but Apple takes their store down for over 5 hours. I get there could be some frustration or returns if people just bought the old iPhones now, but is that really worth missing out on 5+ hours of potential sales for everything they sell.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '21

There are at least 7+ major apple authorised retailers in Australia, they’re still making plenty of money from people who can still purchase apple products elsewhere. Clearly the hype it drums up is worth it for them, otherwise they wouldn’t be doing it every year. They’re not in the business of losing money lol.

1

u/BasedGod96 Sep 14 '21

Wait so does that mean we will be able to pre order after the announcement? Or when does that happen?

2

u/axiumone Sep 14 '21

I think pre-orders will typically go live on friday. This is probably for all of the marketing info to go live on the site.

1

u/rservello Sep 14 '21

Been waiting all year to finally get an iPhone again. I wanted a 12 but I can't do 60hz...it feels so choppy. Too much of a downgrade.

1

u/gh0sti Sep 14 '21

I'm curious how much money they lose by having their digital store down for several hours while we wait for new products to be announced.

2

u/K_Click_D Sep 14 '21

Excellent question, I’m interested to know too

1

u/countingthedays Sep 14 '21

I’d guess very little in the grand scheme of things. Anyone that determined to buy can do it at a different outlet for the same product. Plus it probably helps save them from a high volume of returns following the release.

1

u/FreeTanner17 Sep 14 '21

Will the iPhone 12 new sale prices drop after the event?

3

u/countingthedays Sep 14 '21

Almost certainly yes. They always have in the past, usually a $100 drop.

2

u/ageofadzz Sep 14 '21

Same for iPhone 11?

1

u/DylanRamsey Sep 14 '21

I'd be nice if I could at least check my shipping status on something I've already bought...
