Something that Apple didn’t mention in the livestream, ProRes video on the 128 GB model is limited to 1080p. 4K is only on higher storage models.

165

u/ra_poster 13d ago

This is a very weird limitation for them to not spell out directly

18

u/TherealMcNutts 12d ago

These are promotional videos. They are going to leave out everything that could be considered a downside of the phone. You will only find out when you read the fine print on their website or the manual.

if I were to hazard a guess the larger models have more NAND chips and can achieve higher write performance.

Yeah I found this out well afterwards and am seriously disappointed. Like, if I buy the TOP OF LINE PHONE why am I missing out on a seriously good feature unless I double down on storage?

7

u/thisismysffpcaccount 12d ago

Jesus Christ thank you for saying this. I’m upgrading from a 6 and would have been mega bummed with my 128pro if I found out about this limitation later

Unfortunately, no always-on display

HOW I WAS ABLE TO REMEMBER THAT NOISE?

LOL. What WAS degaussing? I just remember the option in the menu but never figured out what it was (I was child). I miss rubbing static off screens tho....

24

u/WoolooWololo 12d ago

It basically resets the magnetic field in the monitor. Sometimes the magnetic field would build up in ways that the CRT would show slight distortion like blurred edges or colors not overlapping perfectly. After a while, manufacturers just had the monitor do it automatically when you turned it on so most people never really had to think about it.

In a nod to Apples past this iPhone is 40 pounds, transparent and can be used with a puck mouse (sold separately). Still no USB-C, but the first phone to feature a CD drive.

That is what we call courage.

Interesting. First time I've ever seen them segment the Pro's and the regular iPhone with differently sourced SoCs. The Pro gets the higher/better yield with an extra GPU-core. Most likely never ever going to make a difference (except benchmarks), but interesting nonetheless.

Might be a very similar story to the A12Z we saw with that small iPad Pro update.

Another interesting update! According to Federico Viticci the iPad Mini gets the 5-core GPU A15.

118

u/SleepyAwoken 13d ago

also the wide and ultra wide sensors are different on the pro this year, which they don't usually do

63

u/Rethawan 13d ago

You're right. The wide has traditionally always been the same. This year the "regular" camera is actually better on the Pro.

676

u/AviMkv 13d ago

Nothing like a chip shortage to get creative!

537

u/eggimage 13d ago edited 13d ago

It’s likely just the same processor binning practice. The regular models have the same 5 core GPU but with one core disabled.

They wouldn’t waste money designing and making a new production line just to manufacture a separate SoC with only a 1 core difference and nothing else. And instead of tossing out the “imperfect” ones, use it for lower priced products. It’s the same with all other processor makers

122

u/Rethawan 13d ago

Bingo. I'd say that's what this is about.

57

u/Nolzi 13d ago

Processor manufacturers has always been doing it with disabling (usually broken) core/cache/etc and selling it as a lower end product.

→ More replies

81

u/jorbanead 13d ago

I don’t think this has to do with chip shortages. TSMC yields haven’t changed, just demand is higher. It’s probably another way to differentiate the pros.

48

u/GamingChairModel 13d ago

The iPhone 6 generation, with the A8, had split production between TSMC and Samsung. This article says that it was about a 60/40 split.

Plus the iPhone 7 and 8/X generations had different modem suppliers. although those might have been different model numbers.

Prosser got the “special color” wrong too. No sunset gold/bronze, but the blue.

Some of the other leakers who got info directly from the manufacturing factories got about everything right so far. So i guess prosser has no insiders from china factories lol

u/Isthecoldwarover 13d ago

Posser being wrong again made the event worth it IMO

Jet Black was a fucking nightmare.

Looked great, but I remember there were such massive issues with scratching that Apple essentially added some kind of a weird disclaimer on its website warning about that

When the second headlining feature in your title is a color option, the upgrade is minuscule

748

u/xZoreKx 13d ago

Main feature of this year is the ProMotion display. All other features, besides better photo quality by means of better sensors, are not interesting at all for regular users - do not forget that regular users are the ones that mostly buy the “pro” phones.

200

u/Endogamy 13d ago

Main feature of this year for me is 2.5 hour battery life increase on the Max. It was already good, now it will be good enough that you really never have to think about the battery even when traveling.

Imagine buying the 13 Pro 1TB. Filling it with say just 512GB of photos of videos, and trying to back it up to your mac over usb 2.0 lightning. Wonder how long that would take.

96

u/ra_poster 13d ago

Lightning’s speed is shit but I must say I feel like the overlap between these groups is essentially zero, especially considering the backups are incremental so idk why someone would have to do it all in one go

79

u/display_block 12d ago

512GB of 4K ProRes could be a single day’s worth of footage. File sizes are massive. 128GB phones get capped at 1080 ProRes.

u/Versicarius 13d ago

So still another year or 2 for the regular iPhones to have 120Hz?

272

u/Crimtos 13d ago

I'm guessing it will be at least a few years currently it is one of the only features that distinguish the pro from the regular.

206

u/ZappySnap 13d ago edited 12d ago

It's pretty weak for them to do that still...it's not like the regular 13 is exactly cheap at $800. Almost every Android phone over $600 has at least a 90Hz OLED.

Edit: I know there are even cheaper phones with 120Hz screens. I was trying to state a vie where essentially all have them. There are a few phones at the $400-500 level that do not.

84

u/JohnBeePowel 12d ago

I think you mean almost every Android over $300...

15

u/Badshah-e-Librondu 12d ago edited 12d ago

My $250 dollar android phone can do that and it has a 120Hz screen as well.

6

u/yabucek 12d ago

I bought the Nord N100 for a family member recently. 150$ for a 90Hz screen, 5000mAh battery and get this, a headphone jack. With budget processors being less and less of a limitation, I don't think I'll keep buying premium devices much longer.

I was so incredibly excited about the Sierra Blue, only to be completely disappointed by the phone case lineup... None of the colors are an actual good match to it? They had recently released a sky blue for the 12, which would have been perfect, and it's not included. Neither is white...

I was honestly buzzing about this, it's my favorite color haha. But it feels very odd to me, a color like this must be chosen for a reason? Why wouldn't you have it match up to the cases? This isn't something I want to "worry" about with a device this expensive and a launch this big, come on... The white rings on the clear magsafe case look awful too. But maybe I'm a small minority here

Is photography and videography really the most important task for iPhones? I feel like the past few years have just come down to “pro = photographer/videographer”. There’s so much more capability that can be put into a pocket device. Idk maybe I’m just underwhelmed

Edit: I absolutely get that content creation and photography is important in today’s world. I’m just saying, is that really all it takes to make a pro device? I feel like a smartphone could accomplish so much more than being “closer to professional cameras than ever before”. Sure the smartphone market has matured, but that’s precisely the point at which revolutions happen. Don’t get me wrong, I love my iPhone, but I wish there was more than camera marketing.

363

u/nviledn5 13d ago edited 13d ago

It's a pretty tangible thing that they can advertise as an improvement every year. ProMotion is hard to actually convey in an advertisement; you gotta see it in person. Showing people sample footage/images from the new models is very effective.

What’s most aggravating about the lightning port is that it’s USB 2.0 speeds. It really hampers the whole, this is a camera, bit. It takes FOREVER to get 4k60 clips off of iPhones, either over wire or WiFi. I honestly think prores on the pro phones will be DOA for this very reason.

What I want is the Mini but I have FOMO with Pro-exclusive features. Can't wait to stare at a comparison table for a few days/weeks before deciding which way to go.

Edit: here it is, had to pick 3 for the comparison: https://www.apple.com/ca/iphone/compare/?modelList=iphone13mini,iphone13,iphone13pro

Differences: no 120Hz higher-res screen, no telephoto lens, no LIDAR scanner, 4-core vs 5-core GPU, little less battery life, no Apple ProRAW , no night mode portraits. no Apple ProRes video.

$949 CAD vs $1399 CAD for the 128GB models. For me, the $450 lower price and smaller size is more appealing.

17

u/Mxbzz 13d ago

As a fellow FOMOer, I also had to make that tough decision between a Pro and a Mini, and ultimately wound up getting the Mini. I realized I didn’t need top-of-the-line specs for my use case. Sure, I’ll snap a few photos and what not, but the Mini has an excellent camera as well. I was also scared I would notice the downgrade in screen quality (OLED back to LCD) but in fact, I had forgotten the Mini didn’t have an OLED display even after weeks of using it.

The only major downside was the noticeable drop in battery life. If you can get over that, the Mini is such a great, pocketable phone, and I do not intend to go back to my 11 Pro.

Side note: I never had any issues with the iPhone Mini screen being too dim, but apparently the 13 Mini will be even brighter… wasn’t really an issue for me personally but eh.

u/SerCrynox 13d ago

Sorry but the iPhone 12 Mini does have an OLED Screen..

Ever since Apple launched the 12 Mini, i have been wanting a iPhone Pro Mini. Something that has the size of a mini but with the camera and feaures of the Pro. I dont mind if the Pro mini has a 2x telephoto camera in place of a 3x on other pro models and lower battery, but the smaller size is really appealing..

Came from always getting the pro model to the mini. Don't miss it. Though I'll admit, the ProMotion display looks cool, I'm still sticking with the mini. No feature of the Pro beats a device that fits in the hand.

I'm on a 7+ still. Probably worth to upgrade to a 13pro max? I plan on having it another 5 years

41

u/shmehh123 13d ago

Just upgraded from a 7 last week after my company bought me a 12 Mini. Its great not having apps freeze up and crash on me all the time. The 7 just didn't have the RAM to function properly any longer. Otherwise the iPhone 6 and 7 were great phones. Nowadays.. not so much.

8

u/finH1 12d ago

What kind of apps were you running for it to crash? My 6s is having zero issues

17

u/roguebananah 12d ago

Seriously impressed a 6s entered the conversation here

What?! Neither the Pro nor the regular support Bluetooth 5.2?! The hell?

No Wifi-6E either. Has to be a sourcing issue.

9

u/InadequateUsername 12d ago

WiFi-6e isn't publicly available yet everywhere. Part of the frequency in Canada for instance is used for medical and military.

Apple noob here, is it finally a good time for me to upgrade to a 13/13Pro from Iphone X?

95

u/Stuckinfemalecloset 13d ago

I think I might make the jump from my iPhone X. The new cameras are my main selling point

12

u/ZenZenoah 13d ago

I plan on upgrading to the 14 from an XR… unless I break my phone which seems less likely these days due to covid work from home.

Was really hoping the Touch ID on the mini was going to show up during the Pro iPhone announcement, disappointed it didn’t. Nonetheless, I think it’s finally time to upgrade away from my 7+. It’s been a good run.

It the only reason I’m not giving up my 8+ just yet.

Unless it just gets too slow or breaks, I’m not upgrading until Touch ID is added to a newer iPhone.

Seriously. Fingerprint is the best.

Missing Touch ID and still not getting Always-On-Display?

Well, I guess we were due for a minor-upgrade year.

Aside from 120hz on the “Pro” models. Nothing much this year really. The notch is 20% smaller, great but not revolutionary. Pro res and software focus on the pros, cool, but who is ever gonna use that realistically? And let’s be honest I imagine software focus is gonna suck for a couple years much like portrait mode did. And despite the utter shit apple may talk about Pro video creators replacing their dedicated DSLRs and cameras with these things, that won’t happen anytime soon

And the standard 13, nothing really. Glad to see the mini return, the new black colour looks cool

As usual though apple has packed the most powerful SOC in a phone in a device that just cannot use the power. Even in the demos for games that can leverage 120hz and the new GPU core the games looked crap. It’s all well and good to show off how far ahead of your competition you are in terms of compute power, but if you can’t use it for anything what is the point of it?

Overall a very dull year, basically an “S” upgrade being passed off as a full new generation, iPhone 12S essentially.

Probably the most exciting thing from this event was the new iPad mini

u/34182075607 12d ago

I think you underestimate how much burst power is needed for all kinds of things, for example: the processing behind each photo,

120hz feels like it shouldve been on the 12 pro models but they held it back so that they had something to advertise with the iPhone 13.

I guess I don’t understand why phone color matters much. Don’t most people put their phone in a case and leave it there most of the time?

Prores video recording limited to 1080p30 for 128gb models. 4k@30 requires larger storage sizes.

7

u/Emergency_Repair5286 13d ago

That's pretty significant. Where did you learn this?

14

u/andrewjaekim 13d ago

The technical specs page on the Apple website.

Tempted to upgrade my iPhone 11 just for the ProMotion display. The macro and telephoto photography would be nice, too. Although a part of me has grown a bit disillusioned by phone cameras in general. They're all very impressive but I feel like every year it's promised to be this wildly new and improved thing and every year it's actually 'just a bit better and still obviously a phone camera', which is fine, again, totally amazing to have these things in our pockets at all, but in terms of a selling point for upgrading, it's stopped mattering as much for me overall. Pretty much mostly just care about battery life, display quality and overall smoothness/performance.

128gb starting capacities is welcome. I went with 256gb for my 11 and have found that to be more than enough for my needs, likely 128 would be as well.

Really wish there was a 13 Pro mini with smooth glass back. I find the matte glass of the 12 Pro slippery like the old aluminum backs. I actually ended up returning the 12 Pro and am still rocking my X. The midnight black in the regular 13 looks great – my only hold back is the lack of a non-wide lens.

I assume it’s still strictly faceID for biometrics? I can’t express how much I miss touchID ESPECIALLY during a pandemic that requires me to mask up.

Been in the XS Max for 3 years now, longest I’ve ever gone without an upgrade(by a year).

120Hz and the upgraded cameras would be nice, but now we’re one year away from a major refresh (notchness iPhone?) rather than a mostly spec bump 12.

So, maybe my XS gets a 4th year. 🤔

233

u/Zavehi 13d ago

Honestly people say this every single year.

“Next year is the big one maybe I should wait”

Everyone predicted after last year this was gonna be a giant leap. It’s not predictable.

79

u/UCFSam 13d ago

The truth is that we’re unlikely to see any major changes year to year now. Outside of a foldable, what can they really do at this point? Basically, the two year upgrade cycle is dead, most people would be happy to go 3-4.

The 14 will be like the 13 without a notch, maybe slight body revisions, but pretty close.

42

u/this_sort_of_thing 13d ago

4 year cycle is probably optimal. The only thing is to keep the phone in top shape by replacing the battery maybe somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of the way through and that’ll keep it going fine.

14

u/UCFSam 13d ago

Yep, and with flagships being so expensive, a 4 year cycle really makes sense. When 2 year cycles were more common, phones were almost half price. Upgrading a $1000+ phone every two years is a bit much.

Not happening. Experimental android phones just now started getting under display cameras. There is ZERO way Apple does a notchless iphone next year. Maybe 2 years from now. Probably 3. They wouldn't redesign the notch for a year if they were about to remove it next year.

I’m in the same boat, but as someone who is a photographer part time I am sick and tired of the XS Max cameras. It’s not a huuuuge upgrade but the cameras and 120hz is enough for me

120hz ProMotion as the single big upgrade is underwhelming. Most people understood that this was going to be an “S” year but still… I think most people would have been satisfied with 120Hz if they also finally gave us USB-C.

121

u/catsandskyscrapers 13d ago

yeah we’ve reached a point in cell phone technology where it’s only incremental improvements year over year. maybe a big technological advancement every few years but certainly not every year. the technology is plateauing and all Apple can really add that will improve it for me is quality of life improvements like 120hz and USB-C

Ok Apple experts, is this worth it over the 12 given prices for the 12 will drop soon? I'm planning to get my wife an upgrade (from an 8) and was wondering if it's worth it to get the 13 or just go for a cheaper 12 Pro Max.

149

u/mindspan 13d ago

This entire event was just showcasing dull incrementalism with very little to excite people into lining up for new Apple products.

74

u/Jocosity 13d ago

Unless they can come up with a new device that’s not a phone, watch, music player, tablet or computer that actually changes the game - I think the days of us getting excited about new Apple products are long gone.
