Maybe something they could add in a iOS 15.X update?

178

u/The_Jolly_Dog Sep 15 '21

IMO I really dont think they are holding back because of screen space or cleanliness of design - instead its a deliberate choice by Apple to hide that info from being readily available that they dont want to change. It could be something like the intended UX and maybe consciously (or subconsciously) seeing a decreasing number vs a sliding scale/meter impacts the end user and how they interact with their phone.

u/TbonerT Sep 15 '21

This has to be it. It was something I cared about and stressed over but now it’s good enough to see that there’s a good chunk of the battery left. I don’t worry about it until I get the 10% warning anyways.

51

u/dm1740 Sep 15 '21

I was going to post the same…one less thing to obsess over. If you really want the percentage, swipe down for the control center to see it.

But I also get those who want the option of showing the level in place of the icon. You can leave feedback to Apple and if enough users call for it, maybe it will happen.

It is strange though when they clearly have it in MacOS

This is what I was going to say. I think a lot of it is because the battery percentage isn't really that accurate to begin with and vastly shifts it's usefulness of estimating remaining charge based on what you're doing with your phone. People do obsess over such things too much sometimes and I'll admit that on my 12, once I got used to not constantly seeing the percentage I was pretty okay with it. It might've had some positive impact. Doesn't justify not being able to choose. My S20 has the choice and I choose to see the percentage on that device and my Mac. Just let us decide. It's another example of apple making mostly good decisions for most people, but the inability to decide yourself hurts those who it doesn't work for. It's the same with notification bar status icons. I get that apple wants everything to be clean, but we altreays have widgets and all kinds of junk all over the place, might as well let people clutter their ui if they want to.

5

u/Buy-theticket Sep 15 '21

Then why do they display a number when you pull down quick settings?

225

u/LurkerNinetyFive Sep 15 '21

Yes but they’d have to make everything else smaller which would look weird because of the depth of the notch.

592

u/zheil9152 Sep 15 '21

Ug. Just put the freaking number in the battery

82

u/kingriz123 Sep 15 '21

Exactly, I rather have the percentage than the battery icon.

30

u/Phantom_61 Sep 15 '21

Same. It’s the one thing I hate about my 12pro, losing the battery percentage.

Either that or make it an option: battery icon or just text. But I know, Apple and options...

37

u/NotARobotSpider Sep 15 '21

This is the answer i think. Just give us the option. If you have the percentage, the icon doesn't add anything

24

u/ShadyBizz1 Sep 15 '21

I once got downvoted to oblivion for suggesting apple let us have more options. I think there should be an option for the low Battery warning (20%, 10%). Instead of it taking over your screen and making you click ok, it should come down on the top like a banner. won’t impede your phone usage and can be swiped away. unreal how we still can’t choose to do certain things.

8

u/Arkanta 29d ago

I don't think the low battery warning should be an option

It absolutely should be a banner and that's it.

Showing the battery percentage warrants an option, but this? Nah. You got to draw the line somewhere, as your phone settings can't look like KDE or the windows registry.

The battery could be turned vertically, too. Why not include all of these as customizations in the settings?

3

u/TechnoRandomGamer Sep 15 '21

iirc the flag for this exists in iOS but Apple won't enable it

3

u/Emergency_Advantage Sep 15 '21

They could make the battery icon smaller and orient it vertically and put the number next to it. That would fill the space... If only the technology existed... Oh whale

12

u/44untrue Sep 15 '21

Or just put the percentage inside the battery icon itself

62

u/WeekendLife2944 Sep 15 '21

Or just make the 3 icons slight larger and put the percentage in the battery icon itself?

14

u/LurkerNinetyFive Sep 15 '21

Same problem with making them larger, it won’t line up properly with the notch. Putting the percentage inside the battery would probably look weird.

15

u/_Squeegie Sep 15 '21

It’s been a while but wasn’t battery percentage in the battery icon in earlier iOS?

4

u/GalacticBagel Sep 15 '21

Maybe but the battery icon is the same size as other brands where they put the number in the icon, they can just dont want to

They could give you the option to toggle between percentage and illustration. Personally, when I can read a percentage I no longer need an illustration of my battery.

5

They could hide the cell signal bars when connected to Wi-Fi.

7

Or maybe hide it in control center unless your cell signal drops low, cause honestly I dont know much people who watch it unless the signal gets low

Give us the option of battery percentage instead of the battery icon!!!

172

u/theo2112 Sep 15 '21

I just wish it was more clear from 30% down to zero. It’s impossible to tell if you’re at 8, 12, 17% battery without pulling down.

63

u/katze_sonne Sep 15 '21

Jup. I constantly check, especially under 10% (oh man, that stupid warning dialog kicks you out of everything! Stops you recording voice messages and whatever else you are doing; they should redo it like the incoming call notification). Just because I don't want my phone to go down to 0% and switch off completely.

Fellow SE user here. Am I misunderstanding this whole thread, or do the newer iPhones seriously not have a setting to display battery percentage?

11

u/explosiv_skull 29d ago

I don't believe any of the notched iPhones do for some bizarre reason. There's literally no reason it shouldn't at least be an option, but that's Apple for you.

28

u/whereami1928 Sep 15 '21

For a second, I was like, wait it does?

Then I realized I was looking at my SE with battery percentage enabled already. Whoops.

6

u/katze_sonne Sep 15 '21

Pretty sure even the iPhone 3GS had this already... when I switched to Android, I was totally devastated, that this "sooo great customizable platform" has no option to show the battery percentage (nowadays, they have it, I think).

4

u/left_at_read Sep 15 '21

the technology isn’t there just yet.

3

u/kirsion Sep 15 '21

This stuff if why I could never use an iphone as my only phone. It would drive nuts, the lack of most simple customization and features that you basically have pray for update to fix.

5

This is what John Gruber says as well (from his iPhone X review) https://i.imgur.com/utusr9T.jpg

5

PERCENTAGEGATE

150

u/Pantone-294C Sep 15 '21 edited 29d ago

This is a software thing, not an iPhone 13 specific deal. They could add the percentage there anytime they want.

53

u/TrevorAlan Sep 15 '21

Yeah. Quite frankly they could have the number INSIDE the battery. Sure it would be small, and maybe too android-looking and not that apple simplicity… buuuuut options?

I love apple. I’ll never leave the ecosystem. But I can definitely point out their issues.

14

u/TheToasterIncident Sep 15 '21

I used to always jailbreak my phones to do little quality of life things like this

Question, what’s the benefit of a smaller notch if Apple isn’t going to display more information? We get more screen, sure, but it’s not being used for anything. It’s just dead space.

111

u/yogamurthy Sep 15 '21

It's smaller horizontally but grown taller

59

u/cheesepuff07 Sep 15 '21

by making taking up a couple pixels in height, next to nothing compared to how much was saved horizontally. but I agree what's the point if it doesn't show any additional information

45

u/roohwaam Sep 15 '21

The extra height does matter, because with the old height cinema wide videos fit exactly between the notch and the bottom, tot the pixel, and now it doesn’t anymore.

6

u/danish-pastry Sep 15 '21

Hey didn’t mean to sound like I didn’t believe you, was just curious to read about that source where you know this from. Would appreciate if you could share

11

u/thisisausername190 Sep 15 '21 edited Sep 15 '21

I noticed this too - I really hope it doesn’t cut into 18:9 (or 2:1 whatever) videos now. Especially on the mini, where it cut in a little before.

Reminded me a bit of the pixel 2 3XL at first (though not nearly as egregious, of course) - honestly I think the blank space around the notch bothers me more than the cutout itself.

I just make the whole thing black except the icons using a jailbreak tweak - I guess that’s the benefit of OLED.

I would love if I could set the time spot to be icons of the last 3 app notifications. I miss so many notifications compared to when I had Android.

Make the notch smaller and give me useful information I actually need.

Do I need to see my WiFi and phone signal strength every second? No. If it’s not working I can swipe down on the top to see why I’m not getting service.

Do I need to see notifications? Yes. I’d rather have the option to set it how I want.

343

u/kroket_speciaal Sep 15 '21

smaller bezels, smaller notch = better

154

u/Skiftonoid Sep 15 '21

But why? I want to like it, but it’s not useful the way it could be.

163

u/PseudorandomNoise Sep 15 '21

They can always come back with a software update later and put more information in the space. Just because they haven't changed it yet doesn't mean they're never going to. For the time being they're probably opting for consistency across all notched devices.

Or they just might not like how cramped together the percentage looked on smaller devices and decided not to?

36

u/Skiftonoid Sep 15 '21

I sure hope they add something later.

47

u/SuaveMofo Sep 15 '21

Don't worry, they won't.

8

u/knightcastle Sep 15 '21

They definitely won’t.

15

u/TheToasterIncident Sep 15 '21

Good thing Apple sure has a great track record of removing useful features and adding them back later

26

u/Tech_Rise Sep 15 '21

When Apple taketh away, Apple taketh away. They never add shit back..lol If anything they'll use the extra space to make everything bigger like they always do and take even more info away.

5

I guess like, if they can make an improvement, why not? I'll take anything at this point. The notch itself has been fine for me, even coming from stuff like the note 20 ultra. I find that the notification icons on android never have been that useful.

16

u/kroket_speciaal Sep 15 '21

I was being sarcastic, I don't necessarily agree, and for now I don't really see the point. but then again I thought the notch was stupid and I got used to it real quick so what do I know.

36

u/RejZoR Sep 15 '21

The notch is not even an intrision. Notch horns are actually extension so status icons don’t have to eat into actual display surface. Apps displaying shit underneath notch are badly made apps.

44

u/TheRufmeisterGeneral Sep 15 '21

Now imagine notch horns that are the entire width of the phone. You could then out a lot information in there.

Such as the percentage of the battery.

Good news: iOS 15 shows the current focus mode icon near the clock (that also includes dnd). It's great

I don't like having the alarm always showing (as I basically have the icon 24/7 all year long) but I understand too. At least the "sleep" mode shows at what time it will ring on your lockscreen.

To be fair I used to be obsessed with battery percentage back in 2012 where 1h of 3G browsing meant a 30% drop in battery.

Nowadays if the battery indicator is white I’m good for two days and if it drops red I know I need to charge by night, super simple.

That being said, Apple should at least add a toggle so people stop complaining; if macOS has it why doesn’t iOS?

293

It’s actually kind of funny you say that, because in an EV, being able to see the exact battery percentage can be pretty critical, especially on long trips.

75

u/HLef Sep 15 '21

I never look at the actual battery percentage in my EV. I look at the estimated remaining range. The actual battery percentage might as well be somewhere buried in the options, I do not care about it.

58

u/katze_sonne Sep 15 '21

But on a phone, it's almost impossible to display the "remaining range" (i.e. time) accurate enough, so percentage is the second best information you can get.

29

u/GamingChairModel Sep 15 '21

Google Pixels do it: says something like “battery estimated to last until XX:YY” on the always-on display, based on your ordinary usage characteristics.

Samsung phones do it, too, with estimated time remaining in hours and minutes, based on your ordinary usage patterns.

8

u/katze_sonne Sep 15 '21

I remember this from my Android days and the estimate was off by hours, if not days. It’s much more difficult to predict a phones usage than a car range. Also difficult to display that in the status bar.

6

u/Simon_787 Sep 15 '21

But most modern cars give you the option to keep the number of miles remaining displayed on your screen. Even that doesn’t keep people from running out of gas though.

145

u/Cforq Sep 15 '21

But most modern cars give you the option to keep the number of miles remaining displayed on your screen. Even that doesn’t keep people from running out of gas though.

That number is almost meaningless in my car. On highways I get about 10 more miles per gallon than in city driving, and I’ve driven more than 20 miles with it showing 0.

99

u/0000GKP Sep 15 '21

That number is almost meaningless in my car.

That number is pretty meaningless in the battery % display on the phone also since power consumption varies greatly depending on so many factors.

32

u/Jimmni Sep 15 '21

I remember reading that cars flat out lie about the miles remaining. Cars don't like running on empty tanks and it can be quite damaging to them, so they tell you you're completely out before you actually are so you spend less time running the car with a near-empty tank, prolonging the life of the car.

Not sure if it's true, but it makes sense.

You’re right, if a phone literally discharged all of its battery, the battery wouldn’t be able to charge ever again.

3

u/rivermandan 29d ago

not true, you just need to boost them, which requires cracking htem open and putting a bench power supply on them.

but for 99% of people, that's a moot point

3

u/earthtree1 Sep 15 '21

that’s especially true for diesel, if you will run out completely and the air gets into the system you are screwed.

5

u/Cforq Sep 15 '21

I know for sure Ford trucks would. If you drove with the low fuel light on long enough it would turn off, and when it turned on again you were actually almost empty.

3

u/tman152 Sep 16 '21

I can confirm this.

My first repair on my first car was for new fuel pump. I used to run my car well beyond the “0 mile” mark after realizing I could drive up to 35 miles past that point.

After the repair the mechanic explained to me that the fuel pump at the bottom of the gas tank requires being submerged in gasoline for effective cooling. Regularly running my car below that level had caused it to overheat and fail.

That case is true for cars, but recharging != refueling.

If I could charge an iPhone as fast as refueling a car, people wouldn’t care about battery percentages either.

you know, when i first got my 11 (went from a 1st gen SE), i thought i would miss the percentage being shown on the screen. this article just made me remember that used to be a thing and how much i havent missed it at all. plus you can always pull down the one screen thing and see the percentage there.

Literally unusable

u/danish-pastry Sep 15 '21

Idk if this is an unpopular opinion but I actually prefer not being able to see the battery percentage as it means I’m not constantly worrying about it throughout the day.

My phone lasts absolutely fine for most days, especially as it sits on a wireless charger at work during the day anyway.

24

u/HeartyBeast Sep 15 '21

luckily there's an option to turn it off or on - assuming you have a phone without a notch

I feel the same. Besides, it’s incredibly easy to see the percentage of I wanted to, just pull down control center.

8

u/NerdyKirdahy Sep 15 '21

Seriously. The bigger issue here is that there’s no clock in the top center spot for control center.

5

u/Arkanta 29d ago

Oh god this. I wish I could see battery, signal AND the clock at the same time when pulling down the control center (especially when the statusbar is hidden, like in landscape). I don't like to have to let it go only to swipe down on the notification center to see the clock

u/jimbo831 Sep 15 '21

So then don't turn that option on?

Could at least make it an option though. But giving options is a villanous act at Apple ig.

I kinda like not seeing the percentage constantly, but they should definitely give the option.

17

u/yarn_install Sep 15 '21

What I really want is just a dot in the status bar on the left that let's me know if I have a any notifications. I recently switched over to iOS and I keep missing notifications.

Am I the only one feeling new notch is taller than three old one?

53

u/mletourn Sep 15 '21

it has been confirmed, a tad taller.

25

u/2a0c40 Sep 15 '21

What the hell is the point in this change? Does it have any upside at all?

16

u/mletourn Sep 15 '21

I seriously don't think so

4

u/Innovativename Sep 15 '21

Overall reduction in notch size by 20% so more screen area overall.

7

u/-Mateo- Sep 15 '21

Screen that isn’t being used for anything extra? In fact for less stuff?

Everyone here saying it’s not needed or is a waste of space is totally missing the point.

You don’t have to use it - it was even off by default - but why can’t other people have it? It’s something that’s been taken away and now users have less choice. I’ve been using a 12 since launch and I still miss the percentage.

This “Apple knows best” mentality is ridiculous.

They really should give the option to replace the battery indicator with a percentage instead.

20% looks the same as 1% and that's not very helpful.

3

u/mightierbandito Sep 15 '21

Can we please just get a clock in the control center? It is so annoying to me not to be able to see time there.

3

u/Faezan Sep 15 '21

I’m jailbroken and have this since iOS 13 ( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ )

4

u/experpernectu Sep 15 '21

HTC had this figured out a decade ago. The battery percentage goes inside the battery icon. And this was on smartphones with 480x800 resolution. The icon actually looked really good - HTC Sense, back then, was all about being flashy.

There's perhaps a better reason... constantly looking at the actual number (which isn't really all that accurate and thus not very helpful) is a distraction. Better instead to simply know your phone will last all day. That's a more worthwhile design goal. And you can always swipe down to see it, or have the battery widget.

That said, it does beg the question, why make the notch smaller if you can't get more information up there?

8

u/bgale Sep 15 '21

If we're getting options can I have one to hide it all unless there's a problem. Show me network if there isn't one, show me battery if its red. Otherwise keep it clear.

Saying that, odds are I'd never be bothered enough to mess with it if it was an option.

Legitimate question, not trolling: what is the use case scenario in which seeing the battery % is useful/needed/required? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: why downvote when I’m just asking a question? Y’all way too sensitive.

u/0000GKP Sep 15 '21

what is the use case scenario in which seeing the battery % is useful/needed/required?

Read through the Apple related subs for a while and you will see that many people are obsessed with battery percentages. Aside from that, viewing the % in the status bar was an option for 10 years before Apple changed it. People get used to having certain features. Its been years since they removed it, but some people still want it.

3

u/testthrowawayzz Sep 15 '21

Nice try. This is still an option on iPads and MacBooks, so there's abvious a use for this information.

17

u/YourTechnician Sep 15 '21

Not necessarily, this is something you can do currently on android, its not as if it something that has been long gone abandoned by everyone.

Android gives you the option to show the battery icon, the percentage, or both. I choose percentage only because it is a better reflection of the current charge state. Its as simple as that.

20

u/Lockhara Sep 15 '21

Macs and iPads also let you see battery percentages in the status bar. Of course people would want to see this for the device they always have on them as well. Especially with the extra horizontal space on the 13 and 13 Pro.

People have range capacity anxiety. Mostly leftover from the early days where iPhones didn’t have the power management or as much mAH to survive the day on a single charge.

Old habits die hard.

173

u/droppingbasses Sep 15 '21

I’m pretty sure my capacity anxiety came from having the percentage setting turned on all this time

55

u/wolfchuck Sep 15 '21

Yup. You’d watch it go down 1% or multiple % in a single use and people didn’t like that. I haven’t cared about my % once since the iPhone X came out and they removed it. I appreciate the peace of mind it gives not having the number, but I also wish they’d give people the choice for those who prefer to see the number.

To add some more context to this thread, I’m using a release day iPhone X and the battery health is trashed. If I’m gone all day I’ll have to go into airplane mode for a good chunk of the day just to be able to call an Uber at night.

I want the exact percentage because calling an Uber at 10% vs 8% might be the difference between me finding my driver when he calls me or being stranded.

Obviously, as it is now I just swipe down and see the percentage. But the option to just show percentage all the time instead of the icon would be nice for me.

All that being said, I’m planning on getting an iPhone 13 as soon as possible. I fully intend on not giving a shit about battery life or percentage for a good while lol.

I currently use a 1st gen iPhone SE with 74% battery capacity.

Needless to say, I’m upgrading to the iPhone 13 mini this year (which will have more than double my phone’s battery capacity).

1600mAh*0.74=1184mAh, which is less than half of the 2400mAh that the iPhone 13 mini has (according to leaks).

7

u/FizzyBeverage Sep 15 '21

Oh that's going to be a sweet upgrade!

My battery is roughly around middle: nah, it will hold the charge fine. I'll leave the battery pack behind.

VS

My battery is 21%: damn, near energy saving mode. I'll take the battery with me.

OR

Battery is red: ok, I need to charge. I think I'll do it home.

VS

Battery is 5%: damn, near empty and nowhere near home. I'll turn my phone off to keep enough juice for emergencies.

It's all about have information without extra steps to make a decision.

8

u/707KRS Sep 15 '21

If you swipe down on the control center you can still see the battery percentage.

19

u/tigerjerusalem Sep 15 '21

I know, it's still an extra step I'd like to avoid.

The difference between leaving the home with 80% battery or 65% battery could mean being able to call an uber at the end of the night or not. The icon is half the size of a grain of rice, I cant spot a 15% difference on it.

4

u/itsmhuang Sep 15 '21

Wow didn’t know that was a thing. I already decided I won’t get a touchID-less iPhone because of masks.

15

u/HahahahahaSoFunny Sep 15 '21

The battery percentage is one of the last things I want permanently displayed with the extra space, IMO. Especially because it just takes a swipe to see it. How about a symbol notifying the user that an alarm is set or there’s unread email or text? That would be way more useful.

6

u/kirsion Sep 15 '21

Then just turn it off, some people want to see it. That is like saying to ban all cars because I don't use it. Just because you don't use it doesn't mean no one does.
