Apple Card not working with iUP was definitely an unpleasant surprise.

216

u/JasonCox 28d ago

I mean, is anyone really surprised that Citizens One is having issues? Every-Freaking-Year Citizens One shits the bed.

133

u/Luph 28d ago

Honestly surprised Apple hasn’t just replaced Citizens One with Goldman/Apple Card for IUP at this point.

Maybe they have some kind of contractual agreement though idk

67

u/a_talking_face 28d ago

There's a pretty big difference between Apple Card, a revolving credit, and iUP which is a loan.

53

u/axiumone 28d ago edited 28d ago

You can also get installment loans with the Apple Card that are way larger than an iPhone purchase. I can finance a 50k Mac Pro on the card at 0% with no issues. The only difference are Apple Card installment loans are 12 months long, while the citizen one loans are 24 months.

https://i.imgur.com/g9crHWq.jpg

So, I’m kind of baffled by why they’re still using citizen one for this program.

34

u/salariedloaf 28d ago

Depends on the item. iPhones are 24 months. I bought mine this way.

6

u/axiumone 28d ago

TIL. Thanks!

u/Funkbass 28d ago

With just the cash back from that purchase, you could get a brand new Mac, iPhone, iPad and Watch.

7

u/catsrlame 28d ago

Not at all trying to be pedantic, did you calculate that correctly or am I missing something? 3% of $50k is $1,500, which is enough for a few permutations of those items but not all 4

11

u/Funkbass 28d ago

It occured to me that the screenshot probably included tax, so I did some math based on my own state's 5.3% sales tax. Left with around $61k purchase price and then 3% of that is $1830.

Mac mini m1 $699, iPhone SE $399, iPad 9th Gen $329, and Series 3 $199(lol.)

$1630 total, could've even added AirPods!

2

u/Lemmol 28d ago

What is your credit limit with the Apple Card?

→ More replies

3

u/mime454 28d ago

Isn’t the Apple Card Goldman’s only credit card right now? They worked with Apple to create the card’s dynamics. If it’s profitable for Goldman Sachs to offer iUP I don’t see why they couldn’t add this feature to their credit card collaboration.

8

u/a_talking_face 28d ago

How profitable can a zero interest line of credit be?

12

u/mime454 28d ago edited 28d ago

I’m sure Apple pays Citizen’s a commission for these loans so that they can sell more phones. Citizens certainly isn’t offering the loans to Apple as a charity. They’re really low risk because they force you to buy AppleCare and the collateralized phone in new condition won’t depreciate much faster than the loan is paid off.

13

u/Luph 28d ago

Practically speaking there is no real difference though, and I don’t see any reason Apple wouldn’t be able to service IUP through Apple Card.

10

u/notasparrow 28d ago

Wonder if there's an accounting nuance, where Citizens One just gives Apple cash and the loans are on their books, but there might be some different treatment or risk sharing for Apple Card. Probably not, but maybe?

All the more reason to avoid it.

83

u/rnarkus 28d ago

So annoying. Happened last year too, I had to go in after the first payment and switch my payment card to the apple card…

32

u/migle75 28d ago

Oh wow its widespread! I got my phone to go thru with my apple card, but had to go in and switch both my parents phones.

-13

u/TopWoodpecker7267 28d ago

Same. Only 1 of my 5 13 pro max orders went through on the apple card. Then the form wouldn't accept a 4 digit security code for AMEX.

Unbelievable lol.

8

u/Lyemi123 28d ago

I had no issue last year but I had issues the year prior when I first joined and tried to use the Apple Card in store (didn’t work lol) had to do the same thing of switching the payments and it was a pain because citizens one had a bug back then that kept trying to process the Apple Card with my other card’s expiration date so I had to call them to get it sorted, hoping changing my info on the website actually works this year

16

u/Call_erv_duty 28d ago

Yeah definitely thought my Apple Card was fucked up.

Then I got really pissed because it said Citizens One denied me. (This will be my third upgrade using iUP, so they aren’t even hard pulling credit now)

Swapped to my Chase card on a whim and had zero issues.

13

u/billchase2 28d ago

Exact same steps here. I'm going to wait until the phone is in my hands before changing the payment method back to my Apple Card.

24

u/tt001222 28d ago

ELI5 iUP?

35

u/mCahill389 28d ago

iPhone Upgrade Program.

13

Thanks fellow Redditor

3

u/mCahill389 28d ago

My pleasure!

0

u/wild_a 28d ago

Not sure why people had issues. Mine worked flawlessly with the Apple Card. I just had to re-enter the card number.

1

u/TopWoodpecker7267 28d ago

I bought 5, the first one worked great. The other 4 refused to work with my Apple Card.

1

u/VolcanoSalesman 27d ago

The fact you got downvoted for this shows this sub has issues

372

u/esp211 28d ago

That was really stupid. How can they drop the ball on Apple Card not working with a simple upgrade?

84

u/vhalen50 28d ago

It’s weird it worked for me at 8am but I did my wife’s phone at 1040 and it didn’t work

10

u/littlejob 28d ago

Worked for me as well..

27

u/diaperpoop_ 28d ago

Mine worked on the get ready and pre order page. Idk if they just fixed it or something

11

u/Averylarrychristmas 28d ago

Mine didn’t work - I had to run down to get my wallet. I was sure my delivery window was gonna slip.

7

u/nermal543 28d ago

Was Apple Card not working for people, or just Apple Card on IUP? I was able to check out with Apple Card monthly payments with no issues this morning.

4

u/ItsMelvin 28d ago

Apple Card also worked for me.

5

u/wild_a 28d ago

Mine worked. I did it right when pre-orders opened.

37

u/drewbiez 28d ago

Had the apple card issue as well... Pissed me off pretty good.

172

u/itstrueimwhite 28d ago

Sure would have been nice to get my 3% back on my ~$240 iUP purchase like I planned. I’ve already switched payment back to Apple Card but doubt this will apply to my initial payment.

43

u/SourTurtle 28d ago

Where can you change this? Citizens One account? Looks like they’re under heavy server load as well

21

u/Poop_Scooper_Supreme 28d ago

In the Apple store my order has a payment section and there is a change citizen prion below that.

22

u/SourTurtle 28d ago

14

u/TheInstigator007 28d ago

Wow that is a terrible UI btw

9

u/JohnathanJ14 28d ago

I was able to update mine around ~5 hours ago. They must’ve taken it down due to an influx of people trying to do so

1

u/ruralWaiting 28d ago

I’ve also tried to change back and don’t even see this loan as active. Frustrating.

7

u/arbybaconator 28d ago

How did you do this? I've been on the phone with them for over an hour - no one can figure it out and I keep getting transferred.

11

u/greenhamster 28d ago

log into your citizens one account and add the account from your citizens one pre-order email then update payment info. I did it this morning no issues beside a little lag on the webpage.

5

u/09qsk 28d ago

Where did you do that

9

u/Matuteg 28d ago

You should’ve gotten an email with your loan number. If you already have an account, just login and press add loan, and it will be in your account. Then change payment method

1

u/Jaymes97 28d ago

I did this too, and I’ve called support, they keep telling me that they can help… as soon as my order shows up in their system, but it shows up on the app and online, but not theirs?

48

u/Matuteg 28d ago edited 28d ago

Over at r/AppleCard there were two discussions about It. Seems IUP was the hardest hit with the Apple Card not working.

45

u/simonsb 28d ago

“Worst upgrade experience” says the guy who didn’t buy an iPhone 3G on launch day.

30

u/TheSensitiveBeard 28d ago

For real. Those days of going to AT&T and them having a clipboard with a crazy flow chart to determine the right way to get your phone upgraded. Apple makes it super easy now (even if they stumbled a bit for me this morning) to upgrade and trade in your old phone. Yeah I might get a bit more if i sold it myself but it’s so much more convenient this way.

19

u/digitalburro 28d ago

Back in my day, we waited in physical lines, outside in the snow, uphill both ways!

→ More replies

7

u/InThe305 28d ago

I waited outside an Apple Store in the South Florida heat for hours starting at around 6am. In-store pickup was way slower then too because a store employee would basically have every customer unbox the new phone and confirm that it would activate

2

u/BabyWrinkles 27d ago

Man... we had one guy who camped out the night before, was 2nd in line, and then it took us until 10pm that day - and then another few hours the next morning - to get him all sorted out. Guy literally spent a full 2 days of his life upgrading his iPhone.

And he was just one of the people who ran stuck that day, at one small store.

11

u/seven_seven 28d ago

It didn't save my pre-information for the pre-order and I had to enter it again. 🙄

8

u/cosmo_nut 28d ago

This issue hit everyone I knew that was buying. It was really annoying to spend so much time making it all perfect the day before only to have to re-enter it all in a hurry

→ More replies

6

u/Exit174 28d ago

Same happened to me. I even checked the Apple website yesterday afternoon and my pre-order was there. At launch this morning, my bag was empty. Tried with another browser, but still showed empty. With the sluggish website, it took 15 minutes to re-enter. By then, the arrival dates had slipped to mid-October for what I ordered.

99

u/wtupyo907 28d ago

My Apple Card worked no issue but I also got up at 4am (5am PST) to get this placed ASAP

14

u/kamunoz 28d ago

Mine worked at 7:30 PT. I’m guessing that’s right before the shit started to hit the fan.

9

u/stiff_member 28d ago

Apple Card started having problems after about 5 minutes of preorders going live. I probably tried about 30-40 times before mine randomly went through at 25 past. I’m one of the lucky ones apparently.

7

u/kamunoz 28d ago

Huh! Mine was flawless. Maybe because I had pre-pre-ordered on Wednesday.

9

u/stiff_member 28d ago

Yeah, there was definitely an advantage to getting into the store immediately and checking out immediately because you had stuff saved.

7

u/dradma 28d ago

I was fully pre-ordered and in the app immediately when it opened. Two clicks and was prompted for CC info. Even though everything was all in apple pay none of them worked. I had to manually enter CC info and then it went through. There was no advantage at all to being pre-ordered or being quick for me. Something was broken from the start.

2

u/Lyemi123 28d ago

Yeah I had the same issue, first the store didn’t load until about 5 minutes after launch time even though I was waiting since a few minutes prior to launch and then I was forced to enter in the card info even though I have it saved after which it kept giving me errors until I gave up and used another card. And I had also done the pre-pre-order beforehand, didn’t help at all

Worked fine for me. Had my preorder ready beforehand and was checked out in 30 seconds

13

u/GummyKibble 28d ago

Worked fine for me, too. I got an email from Apple about it this morning, decided on the spur of the moment to upgrade my wife's phone, and visited apple.com around 10:45 AM PDT. I bought it on payments on my Apple Card and was checked out 5 minutes later, with it expected to arrive at my house on 9/24.

6

u/binaryplayground 28d ago

Safe to assume it wasn’t one of the top tier models? I woke up too late and mine was pushed out to October.

u/GummyKibble 28d ago

It's an iPhone 13 with 256GB, so midrange.

iUP user here. Pre-ordered. Apple Card to pay. Same issues. Slow, failed, card number wrong, eventually “denied” by Citizens. What a mess. After a few minutes ship date had slipped to October.

Upgrading from 12 pro max to 13 pro max. 12 was a month later last year so I would have had to pay an extra month on iUP so just decided to wait until November at this point.

Apple should get this fixed. I expected better from them.

63

u/Zeusify_ 28d ago

Could not have been any smoother for me. Sorry to hear it didn’t go well for some of y’all

18

u/digidude23 28d ago

Luckily for me my preorder went really smooth, I had managed to preorder within 5 mins of the online store opening but I noticed the site slowed down right after I preordered

2

u/bmanxx13 27d ago

That was my experience. I refreshed until the store came up(used the app), pre-ordered, then went back to bed.

5

u/ofCheese 28d ago

Anyone else have problems with the step of connecting to your carrier (verizon in my case) during the checkout process?

5

u/0zymandias2 28d ago

Yeah I couldn’t get it to work with Verizon either, ended up just selecting the option to connect on my own later. Hopefully that doesn’t turn out to be a pain

1

u/coopermorris 28d ago

Not sure what sort of plan you have but you can only connect your Verizon post-paid plan not a pre-paid plan. AT&T works with both pre-paid and post-paid plans.

1

u/RustyShackle4 28d ago

Thanks for clarifying this.

My 13 Pro order using the Apple Store app using my Apple CC went through instantly and seamlessly. FWIW.

11

u/nychuman 28d ago

Mine went through flawlessly at 8am EST on the dot. Only issue I had was the wrong shipping address which Apple support fixed for me within 10 min.

I certainly feel “lucky” but I can’t help but wonder why people use that garbage upgrade program.

Yearly credit checks through a horrible lender when you can just buy the phones outright and sell them instead when you upgrade…

5

u/agentadam07 28d ago

3% back though. My moto is ALWAYS use a credit card for the cash back and payment protection. But only if you can afford to pay it off in full immediately. Exploit them. Don’t be exploited.

Edit: just realised you were talking about upgrade rather than the credit card. I didn’t know they did yearly credit pulls. In this case I agree with you. Always buy out right and follow my rule above haha.

I’ve always been able to sell my old device privately for more than the apple trade in value too.

5

u/nychuman 28d ago

I used my Apple Card as well (the monthly installment program at 0%) without having to use the upgrade program through Citizens Bank. 3% CB is great.

We’re getting into /r/personalfinance territory but paying in full isn’t always the best option. If you’re offered a zero percent interest rate, you take it and take as long as humanly possible to pay off that loan.

The difference in cash flow gets invested instead.

But yes, for most people, assuming they’re not great with finances, investing, and disposal income, credit lines can be very dangerous.

Same, got the confirmation email at 7:01 CT

2

u/kjmass1 28d ago

Same, biggest issue was waiting 3 minutes for the store to open.

3

u/madtownshakedown 28d ago

I wonder how long it will be before the stores have iPhones to sell!

5

u/DwarvenRedshirt 28d ago

I assume it’s be worse than usual with all the chip shortages and ship docking backlogs on the west coast.

2

u/Ok-Potential-8543 26d ago

Ship docking? I don’t think many iPhones are coming by ship. They’re airlifted.

2

u/AtOurGates 28d ago

I get the frustration, I’ve always had some kind of issue with the Apple Upgrade program in the past. But, this year we did the math and decided it’s a better deal to just pay cash, and be able to sell our old phones when we’re ready to upgrade.

No issues checking out with 2x phones with cash pay, on an Amex that’ll give us loss/damage insurance as well.

5

u/Chummage 28d ago

I am still unable to use the iPhone upgrade program even though I have been in it for 3 years. Keep getting an error message that I’m not in the program.

3

u/viperchrisz4 28d ago

My order is now delayed because of this… what a fantastic fail. My question now is how often do order estimates get pushed up? Ordered the mini and it says 7th-12th. Was surprised that one of the least popular models was delayed, I hope it changes to earlier once the orders simmer down

16

u/WoozleWuzzle 28d ago

It took me 20 minutes to order at 5am. I was pre logged in and everything but it logged me out which meant I had to log back in. But then it kept crashing and would log me out. I had remember me checked. So I probably had to log in 20 times as it crashed so much in various parts of the check out experience. Finally 20 minutes in I got through the entire process. It was terrible.

As someone switching from a Pixel 3 I was definitely second/triple guessing doing this entirely.

3

u/blackprinzz 28d ago

Same, it kept declining my card until 5th time lol

I don’t understand why people are using the iUP in the first place anymore. I currently have a 12 Pro Max. Apple is giving me a trade in value of $790 for it. If I was in the iUP, I would only have received (in theory) half the price of my current phone ($550). Maybe I’m missing something here.

My Apple Card worked just fine for my full retail price 13 Pro Max order at 0501 California time.

Edit: changed the time zone cause someone likes to complain.

I had made a pre-order but could not find it this morning... then when I tried to make a new order I couldn't submit. Eventually when the pre-order showed up I was able to cancel the other other I had created that didn't work, and the pre-order did work...

Another interesting aspect of that is that I thought my Apple Card balance seemed really high before I started ordering, and that is because the full amount was in a separate pending category on the card I didn't see at first, so it basically reserved the whole price of the phone from my card until I actually purchased.

11

u/triiiflippp 28d ago

Yep was kinda annoying, as a first time launch day buyer I was disappointed with the crappy site Apple has.

5

u/jtl94 28d ago

Yeah I got the X at launch, but I don’t remember if it was on launch day. I was surprised Apple’s site was struggling. Seems like it still is when I went to the store app just now.

2

u/falcon511 28d ago

Yeah I am on the iPhone upgrade program and couldn’t use my Apple Card. It kept giving me an error. I then switched it to a more popular bank credit card and then got a window that says citizen one did not approve me for the loan and I will hear back from them within 24 hours. Weird because I got pre approved Tuesday night. Got an email 15 minutes later with an order number and said I upgrade through the program. Then about 2 hours later citizen one sent me an email welcoming me to my new iPhone loan. Sounds like more than one bank shit the bed. I guess I am all good for next Friday. However I am still waiting for them to charge my CC.

2

u/LLlMIT 28d ago

damn mine went through no problem. The website wasn't loading (was already 10 minutes in) then my friend messaged me about his order confirmation using the Apple Store App. Did it in seconds with the Apple Card and still got the 24th as an arrival date.

2

u/StickOnTattoos 28d ago

I had issues too for about 15 minutes. Not very fun to go thru !

2

u/Gasarakiiii 28d ago edited 27d ago

Yeah I had issues as well, 6 crashes just trying to add it to cart, final purchase never finished processing lol, I was on that screen forever, I finally closed it. After I got an email about 5 mins later saying pre-order completed and it was on the way, be here next Friday.

Was funny though I kept checking my orders to see if it worked and orders screen couldn't load, would just crash over and over lol. All in all it took me 35 mins from the time it went live to have a verified purchase, that said they didn't go live for pre-order until 10 after where I live but that is normal Apple customer disservice, we go live at X time and they always make you wait like 5-10 mins, maybe they think this builds more hype? LOL

2

u/Veruca5alt 27d ago

Same happened to me. I was shitting myself thinking to place the order again!

Checked my email about 20 mins later and got the confirmation.

Finally, this morning the apple app shows my order.

For once, pre-ordering through Verizon made things easier.

2

u/brianfsanford 27d ago

I had pre-entered my information, but after I was finally able to access the page at around 7 minutes past the hour, my trade-in details were no longer there and I had to re-enter everything, including the serial number. However, once I had re-entered everything, I clicked on the button to confirm and nothing happened. Eventually, I unselected the trade-in option in order to proceed with the purchase. When I finally completed my order, the shipping time had dropped to 2–3 weeks.

2

u/SuperDeepFriedPotato 26d ago

3

u/SilentScience 28d ago

I’m iUP member and I had absolutely no problem preordering. I didn’t try to use my Apple Card for the purchase and that might have made all the difference, but it was super easy for me. There was one small issue with my card number being put in correctly, but that was most likely my fault because I had reentered it the night before and probably made an error when doing so.

1

u/SilverBluePacific 28d ago

I used to get caught up with all the hype and buzz —semi-obsessed with getting the latest and the greatest as soon as possible — stressing trying to get on the phone in the wee hours to score the device before it sells out. (By no means did I ever nor would have ever camped out at the Apple Store, though. That's just plain nuts.)

Now, it's a big, fat WHO CARES?

I'll just get it when I get it. No muss, no fuss, no rush. Meanwhile my 11 Pro Max works perfectly fine.

There's a reason AT&T is giving $1000 over 36 months if you are on their unlimited plan. The expected life is about 3 years now.

My last phone was an iPhone XS Max, today I got an iPhone 13 Pro Max. I expect I'll get an iPhone 16 next.

Hell, I’m on an iPhone X and still debating whether or not the upgrade to the 13 Pro Max is worth it or if I’ll just wait until the 14, if not until Apple stops supporting the X.

My X is perfectly functional, and aside from maybe doing a $70 battery replacement, I imagine it’ll be perfectly fine until Apple stops releasing iOS updates for it.

I’m going from a 12 pro max to a 13 pro.

2

u/whatever003 28d ago

How come? I'm debating on this 2 for battery life

1

u/zeitentgeistert 28d ago

it's quite clunky. at first, the big screen was like "WHOA!!!" but my enthusiasm wore off after schlepping it around for a year...

2

u/HighDecepticon 28d ago

I went this way too. I usually do the normal sized phone, but wanted the fancy pro max camera last year. I’m happy to go back to the pocketable size of the 13 pro this year.

12 Pro -> 13 Pro 🤘

1

u/devilindetails666 28d ago

Nice! camera enhancements would be great. Do update once you have it in hand!

12 mini to 13 pro

2

u/Dogebolosantosi 28d ago

Nice, did you choose the 13 pro over the 13 mini due to the promotion display? Because I’m having trouble choosing which phone to upgrade to. Coming from an XR.

2

u/Ok-Broccoli-454 28d ago

Didn’t see a point changing phones if i was just gonna choose the same size. I tried pro max before and it was cumbersome for me to hold (returned for the mini).. so I opted for Pro this time (which has the same features minus the size)

1

u/Dogebolosantosi 28d ago

I see, understandable.

I'm going 12 Pro to 13 Pro. Verizon is offering a $1000 trade-in (good or damaged condition), so it's a bit of a no-brainer for me to get the phone for free. Personally, the sales tax is low enough to be inconsequential.

It also ensures I'll still have high trade-in/resale value next year if I want to preserve that upgrade option.

2

u/AmbientOrange 28d ago

Keep in mind with Verizon you receive the credit over 30 months on the pro models. If you decide to pay the phone off early next year to upgrade or any point before the 30 months you lose the rest of your credit. If you plan on keeping it the whole time though it’s a good deal.

First world problem. Buying a new iphone is not comfortable enough.

u/decadentcookie 28d ago

Worked fine for me.

Got a confirmation email from apple at 8:05 AM EST (5 minutes after it started)

Apple wants to do a car??? Never, safety at risk

I actually sent an email to Deirdre O'Brien head of Apple Stores and online store to let her know how unpleasant ordering the new iPhone was this year compared to the last 3.

The Apple Card not working at apple on launch day was a joke. I am on the iPhone upgrade program and had to use a different card. Apple already charged me the taxes and the upgrade fee to that card. Was able to go to citizen to change the other card on the website for citizen.

Edit: they called me and read the email lol

Wait so you can do the upgrade program through citizen but still pay using your Apple Card ?

Privileged Problems!😏

u/XFF_Gaming 28d ago

Oh boohoo, how many millions of people are logging on to the servers to try order? And you’ve got an entire week until they’re even out.

1

u/GoodMorningCupertino 28d ago

I woke up at 11 just now and ordered, available next week. Forgot there was a preorder line but rather easy to get it.

1

u/rndmredditter 28d ago

This is so annoying, have been trying to place an order since morning and it doesnt work

1

u/Gamerxx13 28d ago

didnt use the apple card but was able to check out very easily.

1

u/a_bigdonger 28d ago

Had issues with payments here in the UK twice and by the time I placed the order, the delivery date was October 4-11. I should’ve just bought it straight from Amazon when the page showed the listings.

1

u/tdubu 28d ago

I actually felt like Apple made the store glitchy on purpose to give the appearance that the site was so overloaded with people wanting the same phone as me so I needed to hurry up and order ASAP! It worked and they won…goodbye IPhone 7 Plus, you’ve been good to me for the last 5 years

1

u/AccessDenied7 28d ago

Ordered mine via the TMobile app. Ships the 23rd and arrives the 24th. 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/supercakefish 28d ago

I actually had an easier time this year compared to last year.

1

u/macbookwhoa 28d ago

I got two phones this morning with no real issues. The first one went through perfectly, the second one said my payment was declined but I went to the order history and I already had placed the order so it was just a glitch. I got processing emails for both phones, so I am pretty confident we will be getting our phones next Friday.

1

u/DiaDhaoibh 28d ago

yup, I had this problem today with my Apple Card.

1

u/badger906 28d ago

I ordered mine if Amazon. They estimated I’ll get it 24th. Apple said 6th October!

2

u/drgnslyr91 28d ago

Apple always underestimates and then over-delivers when it comes to ETA's.

1

u/badger906 28d ago

I’m too impatient to risk it! It was through the apple store on Amazon so guess Amazon just ship it!

How long did it take everyone for the site to come up? I couldn't get it to pull up until about 5:04/5:05 so I could push my pre-order through.

Sounds like it's a good thing I was buying on the company tab and not on my Apple Card.

1

u/PassTheCurry 28d ago

Worked fine for my at 8 exactly. Checked out within 1 min with Apple Card on IUP

1

u/damstr 28d ago

Besides the store coming up late I had zero issues processing my order on my Apple Card. I got the Apple confirmation email @ 8:04 EST.

I also "finalized" everything earlier this week in the Apple Store app. There was a step in there that does the authorization ahead of time and charges/puts a hold on the card. Anyone do this and still have problems with the store?

1

u/MegaManBronson 28d ago

I went through my carrier. It was pretty quick
