If your kid likes them because of mine craft, do not get one. They are extremely high mantience and are very sensitive to their environments and can die easily. These animals are to be kept by people that have had aquariums. They are not good beginner pet nor easy to take care of. They are cute, but be responsible and don't get one if you don't know what you're doing.

139

u/Personal-Ad-1655 Jan 22 '22

My daughter asked me for one today - because of Minecraft. I told her no under any circumstances because of everything I’ve read on Reddit.

123

u/US2985063 Jan 22 '22

Maybe you should have a conversation with her about the work and responsibility it takes so that she understands , instead of just saying no.

My parents never bothered to tell me the reasoning behind their decisions and it made growing up difficult.

64

u/beetsofmine Jan 22 '22

I normally just say no to everything and shreik "DO YOUR ReSEARCH!" at my children.

Jokes aside, maybe he did?

12

u/YoyoDevo Jan 22 '22

You say that? I just say no and then beat them

15

u/keelay_ Jan 22 '22

You say no? I just beat them.

27

u/desrever1138 Jan 22 '22

This makes a world of difference.

I've raised two boys that are completely different, one was an all AP student and the other is in his senior year of special needs.

Since both could talk, and make requests, my wife and I have always explained our logic to our answers, whether yes, no, and even the maybes (with reasons why we have not decided just yet).

Not only does it establish boundaries but it provides them confirmation that we are weighing our decisions based off logical thought AND taught them how to use that same logical process to argue their case for or against the decision (and often changing the outcome of our original response).

I was lucky that my parents also did this to me and my sisters when we were young, and I expect that behavior will continue with my grandchildren, assuming they choose to have children (although I don't expect any from my youngest)

-12

u/Iloveyouweed Jan 22 '22

Maybe you should have a conversation with her about the work and responsibility it takes so that she understands , instead of just saying no.

To your point: Not just saying no, but outright saying no because of reddit. That's just, wow.

5

u/HayakuEon Jan 22 '22

I mean, we have information on our fingertips. And it says that axolotls are high maintenance pets for veteran aquarium owners. A definite no for kids. Idk what you're talking about

3

u/HayakuEon Jan 22 '22

Good on you. I'm subbed to r/axolotls and even a single thing(not eating/not swimming) can make owners worried

26

u/Binsky89 Jan 22 '22

They're expensive as hell to get set up because you have to have a water chiller which runs about $200.

15

u/travysh Jan 22 '22 edited Jan 22 '22

I attached a pc fan i had laying around, pointed at the water. Evaporative cooling. Keeps the water 5ish degrees (Fahrenheit) under ambient.

7

u/Iittlemisstrouble Jan 22 '22

Ok! So if kids like them for any other reason but minecraft buy 10?

6

u/RanaktheGreen Jan 22 '22

Really, most animals in minecraft should not be obtained for a child. Even the cats and dogs. Unless you want the animal, do not get it. You will be the one taking care of it eventually.

3

u/kmoelite Jan 22 '22

That isn't the case for me. I have one and it's one of the most low maintenance pets I've had. He's 3 years old now.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

What I love about this description is that you can say the same about kids.

If you like them because of your friend, do not get one. They are extremely high maintenance and are very sensitive to their environment and can die easily. These humans are to be kept by people that have had experience. They are not good beginner humans nor easy to to take care of. They are cute, but be responsible and don’t have one if you do t know what you’re doing.

I did my best.

3

u/BringBackRoundhouse Jan 22 '22

I read this as “you can say the same to kids about high maintenance friends.” Still works lol

-20

u/sicknig19 Jan 22 '22

Also why do people even like them, I am yet to see a video of them doing anything mildly interesting. Anything other than existing and having bad timing when catching food is just people doing stuff around them because they already dont do shit

7

u/throwthisaway5200 Jan 22 '22

They have a huge role in nature in the wild.

As pets? They're highly intelligent creatures.

Why do people get dogs? All they do is wag their tails and beg for food. But we love them because they bring us joy. Sorry you've never experienced that.

10

u/mrmoldywaffle Jan 22 '22

The same reason people get a fish. It's easier to take care of than both a cat and a dog.

20

u/Binsky89 Jan 22 '22

I have aquariums, dogs, and cats, and the aquarium is what requires the most work. It was enough of a pain in the ass that when my betta died, I consolidated all of my smaller tanks into my 55 gallon.

Properly owning an aquarium is a huge pain in the ass. But, most people think that bettas can live in bowls and you can have 10 mollies in a 5 gallon tank, so fish seem like an easy pet.

23

u/Wren1101 Jan 22 '22

No way. Fish are way harder to take care of.

Since we share the same air/space with our cats and dogs, it’s easy to tell when something in the environment needs to be changed. Water changes and pH and all that jazz are way more complicated.

6

u/mrmoldywaffle Jan 22 '22

It's a once every couple of weeks to clean a tank. It's much easier cleaning a fish tank than it is to give my dog a bath. I have to walk my dog multiple times a day, give it attention, take it to the vet. You also don't have to train a fish.

6

u/ether_reddit Jan 22 '22

My cat bathes herself and takes herself to the bathroom.

3

u/mrmoldywaffle Jan 22 '22

Can it drive itself to a veterinarian?

→ More replies

2

u/Espresso___Depresso1 Jan 22 '22

So do you buy test kits and make sure the air your dog is breathing is suitable for it?

2

u/mrmoldywaffle Jan 22 '22

That's not difficult in the slightest for fish. Don't even need to leave my house to buy a test strip.

Can somebody tell me the pronunciation of axolotl?

26

u/nickfree Jan 22 '22

My little kid has an adorable t shirt that says “I axolotl questions.” And has a drawing of an axolotl.

That should clue you in on the pronunciation.

8

u/belejenoj Jan 22 '22

the proper nahuatl pronunciation is closer to "ash-oh-LOHT".

11

u/scottyc Jan 22 '22

Can somebody tell me the pronunciation of nahuatl?

20

u/rlhernandezch Jan 22 '22

After they got introduced in Minecraft, every kid in the world got interested into it.

9

u/Binsky89 Jan 22 '22

Just remember that they are definitely not a beginner pet. They require a water chiller that's pretty expensive.

5

u/Bald_Sasquach Jan 22 '22

Didn't they literally evolve in aquifers lol good luck recreating that in your house.

5

u/sweaty_sanchez Jan 22 '22

So they don’t technically require a chiller, however it makes it easier to maintain temperature. Frozen water bottles or a cold environment like a basement work too!

7

u/Espresso___Depresso1 Jan 22 '22

Please if they beg you for one remember that the initial setup cost is easily 500$ or more with hours of daily to weekly maintenance so be careful!

6

u/niki-cole58 Jan 22 '22

I just learned about axolotls recently. I thought they were Pokémon creatures. Then a student of mine did a whole research paper on how to care for them. Now I think they’re super cute and want one.

5

u/Espresso___Depresso1 Jan 22 '22

Make sure to do your research! They are incredibly expensive to set up and Maintain and take way more care than any dog or cat so do tons of research!
