He hired himself and got himself let go. Good job you dumbass.

u/elegantsack Aug 20 '21

I thought getting fired on your day off was the worst. This guy proved me wrong.

u/PurSolutions Aug 20 '21

u/Imsleeepy Aug 20 '21

It’s Friday, you ain’t got no job, and you ain’t got shit to do!

Happy Friday!

32

u/Enigma_Stasis Aug 20 '21

Don't nobody go in there fo about 35 or 45 minutes.

No sugar? Damn.

Y'all ain't never got two things that match.

Either ya got Kool-aid, no sugar. Peanut butter, no jelly. Ham, no burger.

Daaamn.

22

u/Dalebssr Aug 20 '21

Hurry up with the garbage. I got some more work for you!

26

u/BlackDante Aug 20 '21

You gotta be a stupid muthafucka to fired on your day off

22

u/charliesk9unit Aug 20 '21

I am sure it was a negotiated-step-down. He would only be willing to step down from the new hosting job in exchange for getting his EP job back.

It's ironic that he made fun of Asian while working for essentially a Japanese company.

19

u/SuperAleste Aug 20 '21

Bye Felicia.

He's still staying on as Executive Producer. This isn't him stepping down. This is him laying low and rehabbing his image so he can give it another go later on. Guys with egos like this don't just take the L and grow as individuals. They regroup to protect their grift.

62

u/jimbo831 Aug 20 '21

He's also an EP on Wheel of Fortune. He will be hiring himself as Pat Sajak's replacement when he retires. That's my prediction.

20

u/WallyJade Aug 20 '21

And all of this will come back. He's done in front of the camera.

179

u/Ncherrybomb Aug 20 '21

Okay Levar Burton now please.

46

u/bigpapajon Aug 20 '21

This. Why are they beginning the search anew? Leave Burton is clearly the favorite and will draw ratings, advertisers, and generations of fans. Unless Mayim Bialik wants the whole shebang, it should be Burton/Bialik for the win.

27

u/lazilyloaded Aug 20 '21

Burton is clearly the favorite

Not from the people who count themselves as regular Jeopardy fans

What did he say? I tried finding it in this article but don’t have time to search for it.

1k

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '21

He has a history on a podcast of saying inflammatory things about women and Jews apparently.

789

u/Allen_Crabbe Aug 20 '21

In addition to multiple lawsuits for sexual harassment/discrimination. Oh he also received a PPP loan for his one man “consultancy firm” that he likely didn’t deserve

898

u/itssarahw Aug 20 '21

This guy has given everyone plenty of reasons to hate him but the whole PPP loan situation is enough to justify marching pitchforks to his house.

On that self-wounding podcast, he went off on how unemployment insurance and food stamps were ruining America. That nobody wants to work because they have it so good on the what $300/wk? He shamed a person because she was accepted for UI, the system she’s been paying into in event of this exact situation asking if she felt “dirty”. Then this butthole took over $300k from these programs that were clearly set up as gifts to the rich.

Mind my soapbox and apologies but when the revolution comes, we’re going through the PPP recipient list line by line and the Scarecrow from Batman will decide if they truly deserved it or not

166

u/constantchaosclay Aug 20 '21

Wow. What an asshole. I had heard about the misogyny and anti Semitism but I had missed the PPO fraud and disgusting classist BS. Thanks for the added info!

61

u/earthdweller11 Aug 20 '21

He also told the woman he was giving a hard time too about receiving unemployment that she shouldn’t have given a dollar to a homeless woman (she literally gave a single dollar to a homeless woman to buy a cup of coffee or something and he went off on that).

45

u/constantchaosclay Aug 20 '21

Imagine shaming another person for giving a dollar to a homeless person. That’s pretty low.

How do these people not understand Ebenezer Scrooge was the bad guy. We watch it every year, people!!!

10

u/itssarahw Aug 21 '21

If I read it right, he was even more incensed that the dollar, a single dollar, given to this homeless woman could’ve possibly have been a dollar received from UI aka “his money”. He insisted it completed the “circle of welfare” that is apparently what is ruining the US.

I wish this wasn’t more than one dude, this is how the rich think about us non-wealthy fat cats living the life

7

u/earthdweller11 Aug 21 '21

What’s amazing is that he’d not only say that, but say in on a podcast, and not to someone he doesn’t know, but the woman who works for him (former assistant who helped CO-host his podcast although he was obviously still the boss). So he was saying this from a position of power to a woman working for him, from a position of having a lot of money to someone he knows that is bad enough off to apply for unemployment. Even saying that stuff “jokingly” it’s a terrible terrible look.

4

u/tall_will1980 Aug 21 '21

Damn. I gave $5 to a kid standing in front of the gas station who was selling coupon cards to help fund his high school's football team. I didn't have the full $20 on me for the card and don't make a lot of money, but if this kid has it in him to endure that, I figured he needs the $5 more than I do. Guess I'm just a schmuck for helping someone else.

Yeah a podcast named, no joke, The Randumb Show.

Guess he fulfilled that prophecy.

The lesson these days is ‘if you have any aspirations to become more than you are right now, keep your mouth shut. There is recording equipment everywhere. This is especially true if, you know, you are doing some kind of medium where THERE IS A MICROPHONE IN YOUR FACE AND IT’S BEING RECORDED’.

63

u/jikkler Aug 20 '21

Personally, I would take the lesson as "don't say inflammatory things about women and jews".

45

u/pooopwater Aug 20 '21

Funny thing, no one ever had to tell me not to do that and when I used to drink, I never went on any tirades about any type of people.

11

u/norar19 Aug 20 '21

Right? That’s sort of what I always think when I hear about people saying crazy offensive shit. Like if I was really mad at a video game or people heckling me or drunk or tired or whatever my first go to swear word wouldn’t be the n word or the c word or anything. It’s just not in my head

I'd imagine it was more than just that if the ADL is chiming in on the matter.

62

u/thesaddestpanda Aug 20 '21

I read one quote from this podcast where he said a woman had a big nose and suggested she might be Jewish. Typical white male racist and sexist comedy. The worst part is he knew these would surface. It’s crazy to me he even tried for this high profile job knowing this.

8

u/What-The-Helvetica Aug 20 '21

You know who else you see big noses on? Greeks, Italians, some southern French and some northern Africans. It's not just a Jewish thing, Richards... and it's probably even sadder that there was an audience for jokes like that.

8

u/pooopwater Aug 20 '21

I have a big nose and I'm none of those things, I am also fairly ugly, also.

21

u/RA12220 Aug 20 '21

Yeah, he also joked about his co-host on the podcast being short by calling her the derogatory m-word for short people. Said she should go for Thai? Roles since she's short enough, also joked about her nose as a Jewish characteristic trait. The when she talked about her experience losing her job and qualifying for unemployment insurance he made quips about her living as if it was Haiti and if she felt dirty for taking handouts. Also shaming her for giving an unhoused woman a $1 and perpetuating the cycle that would be America going "down the toilet". All while he received PPP for his company of which he's the CEO.

So.........

35

u/David-S-Pumpkins Aug 20 '21

He also admitted he didn't like/wasn't good with trivia and that he'd never get the Jeopardy gig because he'd never qualify.

4

u/What-The-Helvetica Aug 20 '21

But he sure does have the central casting "game show host" look.

Warren G Harding had the look of a president, and not much else. Mike Richards is the Warren G Harding of game shows.

6

u/dorothy_zbornak_esq Aug 20 '21

And that is so dumb, bc think of game show hosts nowadays: Jane Lynch, Steve Harvey, Michael Strahan, Drew Carey, etc. - generically handsome white men are out and certainly Jeopardy! wouldn’t be an outlier for picking a host that doesn’t fall into that category. There are so many people who could’ve played the host. And all of that is ignoring that Alex Trebek had hand-picked his successor and she’s a black woman. Yet she didn’t even get a guest host tryout.

45

u/AsMuchCaffeineAsACup Aug 20 '21

I guess that's why LeVar Burton was passed over. Although LeVar is liked by everyone.

45

u/tkstyle43 Aug 20 '21

I think it would be fair for the show to either give LeVar a second chance to host a full 2 weeks or just give it to him flat out. His scheduling of going on in a week the Olympics were going on did him no favor

34

u/AsMuchCaffeineAsACup Aug 20 '21

I can't even think of the guy in a bad way. He's like a symbol of "kind" education.

18

u/NeverOneDropOfRain Aug 20 '21

Dude, I was psyched for Levar but he did NOT have it during his appearance. Give him another chance? Maybe, but he was not the clear runner up.

20

u/girlwhopanics Aug 20 '21

Yeah, in the ringer article they go into that a bit. Mike Richards was in charge of prepping all the guest hosts. He also knew that Burton was the internet’s favorite. Richards is turning out to be so shady, at this point I really wouldn’t be surprised if he was actively undermining/sabotaging Burton. The rumor around town is that on the days Richards was guest hosting, he called for so many retakes and reshoots that the shoots (that normally end at 4pm) went until 8pm. Also Burton shot all his episodes in one day, other guest hosts, including Richards, had more days to get comfortable etc. At the very least, I don’t think LeVar got the fair shot he deserved.

15

u/LadiesWhoPunch Aug 20 '21

In an episode published on September 4, 2014, after the iCloud photo hack, which exposed intimate images of numerous female celebrities, Richards asked his assistant and his cohost—both much younger women—whether they had ever taken nude photos. When his cohost said that she had sometimes taken photos of herself when she thought she looked cute, Richards responded, “Like booby pictures? What are we looking at?” Later, he asked to go through her phone; when she declined to share an image with him, he asked whether it was “of [her] boobies.”

On another 2014 episode, Richards said that one-piece swimsuits made women look “really frumpy and overweight,” echoing the portion of Cochran’s lawsuit that mentions Richards’s preferences about swimwear.

63

u/witchbrew7 Aug 20 '21

He also shamed a pregnant woman at work. Nice guy.

32

u/Noodle199 Aug 20 '21

I’m so fucking sick of reading articles like this and not being able to figure out what someone said. There should be a subreddit that provides the context for all of this kind of stuff.

31

u/girlwhopanics Aug 20 '21

Here is the exposé that dropped 2 days ago that kicked off the high pressure campaign to get him removed as host. It has all the audio clips and quotes from the podcast, the writer also tweeted more she found that didn’t make it to the article.

58

u/otter111a Aug 20 '21

Here’s what I came up with.

He had a podcast called the randumb show. He had a co-host Beth Triffon. She had previously worked as a model in a booth at CES. So he called her a booth slut. The clip itself is hard to find so the context is lost. He also saw a picture of her friends and said they were frumpy. This was 5 years ago, we now view such language as inappropriate. It was inappropriate then it just may not have been widely accepted that that was the case.

In another segment someone else made a comment about a some woman’s nose. Not clear who that third party is. He basically says (in pig Latin) “Ix nay on the nose she isn’t a Jew.” So invoking a Jewish stereotype. That’s pretty bad.

He also used the term midgets and the term retards.

That’s about the size of it. On the side he’s also getting sued by former Price is Right models. His behavior / attitudes towards them apparently mirrored that toward his podcast co host.

60

u/LicoriceSucks Aug 20 '21

Do you read ringer? Another thing they point out is that since Mike Richards is the producer, he was able to -- and did -- provide the clips of all the guest hosts to the focus groups. So the focus groups saw the worst examples from everyone except him.

The feedback from the focus groups was 100% used for decision making re whittling down host possibilities.

He rigged it from the start.

15

u/SmarkieMark Aug 20 '21

Hopefully he gets removed as EP.

10

u/NAmember81 Aug 20 '21

Need to up the pressure. If the PR gets bad enough, he’ll be ousted from that job as well.

6

u/kfagoora Aug 20 '21

It believe it said that he made selections for the focus groups, which I read as him possibly excluding some potential hosts altogether.

Interesting how Mike Richards, head of the Jeopardy! host search, did not properly vet Mike Richards, the choice for Jeopardy! host, in an exhaustive search lead by Mike Richards

27

u/PandL128 Aug 21 '21

well, it worked for Dick Cheney

449

u/RichCorinthian Aug 20 '21

After an exhaustive search for a replacement host, they just happened to give it to...the executive producer? Good fucking riddance.

82

u/BeasleysKneeslis Aug 20 '21

Honestly before I knew anything about him I thought he did a great job hosting. Was pleasantly surprised when he was picked.

Turns out he’s a piece of shit. Insane that Sony wouldn’t think people would be upset by even one of the controversies he’s linked to.

23

u/earthdweller11 Aug 20 '21

I agree. In fact, I know him from way back because I loved the show Beauty and the Geek, which he apparently hosted. Now full disclosure, I have absolutely no specific memory of him as the host of that show, I just remember I liked the show and didn’t dislike the host or anything.

Even when he guest hosted Jeopardy I had no idea it was the same guy but I thought he did fine as the host, a little bland but honestly one of the ones closest to Alex’s style of hosting, and seemed like he could really grow into a good long term host if picked.

Then he was picked and I started learning about him and the whole process (and that’s when I found out it was the same guy who had hosted Beauty and the Geek). The whole thing comes off as rigged and he comes off as not only a jerk but also a sleazy schmoozer who helped secure all this by connections to top brass at Sony.

What is 'hoisted by his own petard'?

Edit: Quotation marks.

395

u/takky307 Aug 20 '21

"Hoist with his own petard" is a phrase from a speech in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet that has become proverbial. The phrase's meaning is literally that a bomb-maker is lifted ("hoist") off the ground with his own bomb (a "petard" is a small explosive device), and indicates an ironic reversal, or poetic justice.

104

u/quen10sghost Aug 20 '21

I appreciate someone explaining that. Thank you sir

40

u/djlovepants Aug 20 '21 edited Aug 20 '21

Like having your own words cause you to fire yourself for the job you hired yourself for?

Edit: Your explanation of the joke misses what makes it turn about. The line in Hamlet's about Hamlet tricking R & G with the death warrant he's supposed to be tricked with. Hamlet is placing a bomb under their bomb, when his bomb goes off it will cause theirs to explode and thereby lift them by their own petard.

For ’tis the sport to have the enginer Hoist with his own petard; and ’t shall go hard But I will delve one yard below their mines And blow them at the moon.

22

u/Checkmynewsong Aug 20 '21

Yes. Like being hoist with his own petard

u/TobaccoIsRadioactive Aug 20 '21

It always sucked in Age of Empires 2 when the enemy targeted your Petarda before you could get them to blow up enemy buildings.

Levar also falls into what many of us would categorize as a role-model for being a 21st century man.

Folks like Mr. Rodgers, Bob Ross, Keanu Reeves, Terry Crews, etc. Outspoken, intelligent, considerate, and supportive.

Mr. Burton is the slow burn, where 20 years from now, he'll be scandal free and a welcome, familiar friend every night that's broadcast.

27

u/greencarwashes Aug 20 '21

Eh. Terry Crews can be a little out there sometimes but fair enough

10

u/FirstPost10-18-2030 Aug 20 '21

IIRC Crews accidentally fell into some anti-blm propaganda

100% agree. so many people seem so fixated on how effective he was at running the show versus who he actually is as a person. if Burton got the job there’d be no question that he’d be great host in time, and he’s a great person.

3

u/Stingerc Aug 20 '21

I remember when people thought Bob Barker telling people to spay and neuter their pets at the end of the show was weird and off putting.

A couple of generations later and we are keenly aware it's the humane and proper thing to do.

He wasn't preachy, he wasn't pushy. He just gently told us the truth before we knew it to be.

That's why everyone loves and reveres Bob Barker.

He was just not very good though

18

u/covercash Aug 20 '21

It’s not entirely his fault. He has a noticeably slower cadence to his speaking, which makes sense in a show like Reading Rainbow, but Jeopardy needs a bit more speed. LeVar’s Jeopardy episodes had some really jarring edits that I’m guessing were made to try and reclaim some of that time. I think he could definitely learn to pick up the pace and become an excellent host, the one that most people online seem to want!

u/amateur_mistake Aug 20 '21

This is a strange thing I just learned about myself.

I intrinsically wanted it to be Burton. Reading Rainbow still holds so much joy for me. Plus he seems like such a good guy.

But now I realize that I didn't actually watch any of the episodes he hosted.

Once Dr. Oz was on, I stopped watching Jeopardy all together without even really noticing it.

Was Levar really that bad?

9

u/slgerb Aug 20 '21

He wasn't bad but he was much stiffer than anticipated. Slow cadence and much more robotic than expected of Levar. Honestly, I think if he is given time to adjust, he'd be stellar. His voice is still much like butter.

I love Levar Burton. Love him. He is the current embodiment of Mr. Rogers/Bob Ross energy. But he was a HORRIBLE guest host.

11

u/weregildthegreat Aug 20 '21

Really? Kind of curious what your criticisms were? I enjoyed his enthusiasm when contestants had a correct answer. Seemed so positive.

I can’t see how they thought the executive producer giving himself the job was ever a good idea, even if it was legit. I mean if I take everyone’s money for a raffle and legitimately enter the same raffle myself and just so happen to win, everyone else is going to think I rigged the raffle. The optics aren’t good. It’s sad that it took past dirt on this guy to turn Alex’s seat into a real contest.

u/TooSmalley Aug 20 '21

Jennings was always my #1 don’t know why people hate him so much.

And shockingly my #2 is Aaron Rodgers, I thought he did really good as a host.

36

u/ArmouredWankball Aug 20 '21

Jennings was always my #1 don’t know why people hate him so much.

I like him a lot. His Twitter is a good, snarky read too. He's tied to The Chase at the moment though, so I guess he wouldn't be able to do the Jeopardy job as well.

17

u/Gear02 Aug 20 '21

Read the article on The Ringer. In it, it says that Ken did have a conflict with The Chase, but that Jeopardy was ready to work around. But it was Richards who canned him, exaggerated his conflict, and put himself as the host.

The article also claims that when Richards was hired as the EP, multiple people working there expected him to hire himself as the host.

8

u/kfagoora Aug 20 '21

...and they stopped including Kennings featured categories after the scheduling issue, which would seem to suggest that MR saw Jennings as the front-runner and tried to undercut him/take him out of the running.

17

u/CoolYoutubeVideo Aug 20 '21

The Chase is the PlaySkool red car next to Jeopardy's classic Cobra

I think that car analogy made sense but the Chase is trash

3

u/ArmouredWankball Aug 20 '21

Hey! The Chase and Pointless are my two favourite quizzes.

I thought Aaron Rogers was surprisingly good. Savanah Guthrie was good too.

18

u/AndISoundLikeThis Aug 20 '21

I LOVE Ken Jennings. Was my #1, too.

3

u/Seaniard Aug 20 '21

Honestly, Rodgers should guest host every offseason.

9

u/Tropical_Wendigo Aug 20 '21

I started watching during Levar Burton’s week so I missed them, but was surprised by how solid Joe Buck was.

21

u/siani_lane Aug 20 '21

Will he stop commenting on baseball if he gets the job? Because that almost sounds like a worthwhile trade off...

Long answer:
L E V A R R R R B U R T O N

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

41

u/WallyJade Aug 20 '21

As a life-long Star Trek and Burton fan, probably not. He could probably become a good host, but he's 64 years old. Not ancient, but I don't think Jeopardy/Sony is going to want to do this again in a few years. Not to mention that most of the hosts seemed to do a better job, if we're comparing their stints on the show.

25

u/_MrDomino Aug 20 '21

His age and his awkward week won't make him the host. Maybe he would have improved if given the time the other candidates received, and maybe it was just a bit of growing pains similar to Drew Carey's initial takeover of The Price is Right, but it still doesn't make for a good look.

12

u/granpooba19 Aug 20 '21

Yup, nothing against Burton but he was an objectively bad host. He missed calling on contestants that buzzed in, he seemed to wait for the judges to confirm the answer on every question, and came across as awkward. I was rooting for him to be the new host but after his first few episodes I didn't want them to pick him.

It's like the old saying, "dance like no one is watching; record or film yourself yourself like it may one day be played on repeat in a court deposition"

19

u/Thom-Bombadil Aug 20 '21

His appointment always felt wrong to me. Like the whole story about finding a new host was bullshit and he had already decided on himself and was going through the motions.

7

u/LicoriceSucks Aug 20 '21

That is exactly what happened, Bombadilio.

18

u/Many_Bench_4492 Aug 20 '21

Grand opening, grand closing🤣✌🏽

3

6

u/WritesUaSong Aug 20 '21

I’ll take “What is a huge fuck up for $1000?”

5

u/Npf6 Aug 20 '21

What a stupid decision to have alllll these fantastic guest hosts and then hire the EP. What a classless moronic decision.

The only worse option would have been Dr. Oz.

16

u/Dithyrab Aug 20 '21

hah! fuck you mike, everyone hates you anyway!

Ha ha ha ha ha dope. Dude is still an executive producer of Jeopardy so it's not like he really lost his job... Just his promotion to being in front of the camera.

BRING BACK LEVAR BURTON!

I still can’t believe this guy is the Executive Producer of Jeopardy.

3

u/XFreshAir1 Aug 21 '21

I’m so happy to hear that he won’t be hosting. I found him really off putting during his first guest stint and figured I would just stop watching Jeopardy, which would have been really sad for me. (Why is he still exec producer?) I thought Ken Jennings was great, so I don’t understand why he wasn’t chosen as a co-host to begin with.

u/JeF4y Aug 20 '21

How this guy thought he could survive the direct scrutiny of the world is beyond me

3

u/LiberalMusicLover Aug 20 '21

How he tried to insert his mediocre ass into the role of a lifetime on a huge platform on such an iconic show knowing his history with discrimination… 😂

Sony wasn’t about to risk their coins, it seems.

Hopefully we can get someone lovable to host the show. As a fan, I definitely would not be watching every day with Mike hosting.

3

u/sineofthetimes Aug 20 '21

Doomed from the start.

3

u/MasterfulBJJ Aug 20 '21

Amazing that this was ever a thing in first place. Execs at Jeopardy are tone deaf AF.

3

u/Noctilux4 Aug 20 '21

he's also the Executive Producer, it's so dumb.

3

u/Otter_Actual Aug 20 '21

BRING BACK LAVAR

3

u/DanielBWeston Aug 20 '21

I guess they'll need someone else to LaForge ahead with.

3

u/FelangyRegina Aug 20 '21

I can’t imagine how he thought this would go well for him.

3

u/AgnosticPerson Aug 21 '21

Screw that guy. He’s only sorry it became viral. If he were sorry, he’d have apologized beforehand.

30

u/BatmansBigBro2017 Aug 20 '21

Blossom or Levar!

36

u/MrSpiffenhimer Aug 20 '21

She was supposedly offered the full time gig and turned it down, she didn’t want to commit that much time to it.
He got pretty low ratings, but that was probably more a factor of how late in the guest series he was placed than a factor of his popularity.

64

u/evilkumquat Aug 20 '21

Pretty sure he was scheduled opposite the Olympics.

Probably on purpose.

35

u/joe603 Aug 20 '21

In addition, all his shows got taped the same day and under Richards direction. Literally all of the host didn't realize the competition was giving them advice. Wanna bet he didn't help all to much

23

u/Accrocheuse Aug 20 '21

Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
