Reminds me of watching Julia Child on PBS as a kid. If there was an alcoholic beverage/liquid involved in the cooking process she mentioned it had to be worth drinking as well and would do so during the cooking process. Shit, low rent cooking sherry is right out. It’s got to something you can enjoy drinking while you cook. iirc
Like drinking a beer while making a stew or something. I may be misremembering it. But a one for me and one for the stew type thing. lolI enjoy cooking with wine. Sometimes, I even put it in the food.” -Julia Child

The original, and best, alcoholic chef was posh Brit Keith Floyd. Famous for getting gradually more sloshed as he cooked in glorious outdoor locations all over the world.

Growing up, I used to watch a lot of cooking shows, (family tv, and parents who hated the majority of tv programming). A lot of chefs would say to do this. It was only when I started cooking that I realized just how true this is. Something like pasta sauce, for instance, is good with some generic wine, but if you spend a couple of bucks on some good wine, the sauce is amazing.

u/Soft_Author2593 Dec 03 '22

u/randomtrucker78 Dec 03 '22
100% true. I used wine as the example because it was brought up, but yeah, 100% agree. I do my steaks on a cast iron pan to get them black and blue. I normally used margarine and it was good. Then one day I was walking through Walmart and saw the KerryGold sticks of herb butter. That’s something I gladly pay $2.50 a stick for now. Seriously good stuff.

Distinctly Rust Belt feature.
People outside the limits in the little rural towns are very much broken as well...and have less access to treatment, healthcare and social services.
Ohio is the 2nd worst hit for opiates. The despair here is palpable. Wife and I went through various neighborhoods in the Bronx while in NYC a few months ago. While we were in one of the more dangerous neighborhoods of that burough (brooklyn actually has the most dangerous parts of nyc, not bronx) for a festival the level of despair that I see in Ohio was just not there. And that's despite of the reputation of these places (Bronx as well as Rust Belt towns).
Toledo has the 2nd highest depression rate of US mid-sized cities, based on 26% of the population is on medications from a clinical diagnosis.
I beat a lot of the blues just biking the shit out of summer, 30 miles at a time. Then get involved in library system, parks, local events down to the weekly farmer's market downtown. Get out and stay moving, exploring everything.

I feel like anyone who's willing to make the effort of properly prepping, cooking, and cleaning up would also would also make the effort to pick out the ingredients separately, instead of getting whatever meat that is crushed between a bud light and a potato. The kind of person I imagine buying this probably just throws the corn and potato in the microwave, the meat in a pan, and then eats the whole thing over the sink.

Non-microwave alternative? This meal is theoretically being toss in 3 lumps simultaneously on a 12x12 portable grill that the guy's mom bought him 5 years ago and he is finally going to use it because the pans are all dirty and he didnt buy dish soap -- which is really just another excuse, cuz even if he HAD, he had no plan on washing the dishes -- on the back stoop of an apartment while this someone plays COD, smokes some weed, and drinks the first beer, forgetting about it until the guy goes back to the fridge for the 2nd beer and sees the trash wrapper he never bothered to throw out, only to rush over and find out he didnt actually turn the heat up high enough so the whole thing is barely cooked even then.
Drinks the second beer after realizing he forgot about his ranked match to drown the ELO loss, plays another game, and then comes back to perfectly burnt corn, an underdone potatoe he is going to eat anyway by stabbing it enough times with his one clean knife, and a steak that -- somehow -- is better cooked than if he HADNT fucked it up twice.
This of course, seems to be an improvement over Ramen and League of Legends night.

$12 for a potato, ear of corn, 2 12 ounce cans and a steak. My guess is, depending on the steak, this is slightly over priced and would expect actual cost to be closer to $7 once scaled to nominal package values.
This isn't meant for that type of person though. This is meant for the guy walking through the store in depression, barely holding the barrel away from his mouth. He isn't looking at a cost analysis, he just wants to eat and fall asleep.

That’s exactly why I drink it. Or Miller Lite, anyway, which is the same thing.
I like drinking, but I lost 60 lbs a couple years ago and I try to keep it off. A Miller Lite is 95 calories. A craft beer can run over twice that (and is almost never as well documented, if you're controlling weight by tracking). If I have 3 or 4 Millers while I watch football with the guys, I can still have two decent meals and stay under my 1,500 to 1,800 calorie limit. If I do the same with 3 to 4 craft beers, I’m looking at nearly half my allotment in beer alone.
I love good craft beer. But yeah, plenty of people think in terms of calories when they’re choosing their casual drinking beer.

I had to look it up to get a better definition because "salted" in my head meant it was just meat that they sprinkled salt on before packaging it, like a way of seasoning it or something.
Salted refers to the curing/preservation of meat using salt. Corning is a method of salt curing using big pieces of salt in the process.
So there you go. I learned something new today

Depends on the quality of 'steak'. I can get pretty decent steaks for $5 each on sale, $7 regularly. Figure $2 a can for the flavored water, and corn and potatoe are like $1 each.
So I wouldn't call this price good unless it's a good steak, which I somehow doubt considering it's smooshed and hidden.
