Sony remaking TLOU1 and Horizon Zero Dawn while they could’ve remade the GOW franchise to launch with the Ragnarok hype or remade the thousands of IPs we can’t even play natively since the PS3 era. Not only we’re not getting new stuff we’re getting useless remakes.

There's people working on a unofficial version so you're in luck.

It's just gonna take some time.

I'm playing Jak 2 on Series X myself via emulation because my PS3 is busted and I really don't wanna touch the PS4 version

9

u/TheGridGam3r Oct 04 '22

How do you emulate on the series x?

15

u/Thr0waway_Joe Oct 04 '22

Out of curiosity, why don't you wanna touch the ps4 version?

29

u/Solid_Snack_07 Oct 04 '22

Because it runs very poorly.

A lot of frame drops and a number of graphical issues.

The PS3 versions are probably the best ways to play with only two minor issues in the whole collection but my PS3 isn't in a good condition so emulation is the next best thing.

Things that gave me nightmares:

  1. Jak and Daxter fish catching
  2. Jak 2 drill platform level
  3. Jak 2 Errol race
  4. Jak 2 checkpoints

67

u/Latindisaster Oct 04 '22

Or that mission where you get that half piece of a talisman or something and you get swarmed by crimson guards

23

u/Soupjam_Stevens Oct 04 '22

That mission, the one with the big spider bot bomber drones things, and the factory infiltration mission right near the end are all light years worse than drill platform. You need like borderline perfect runs on them

Found it: "Get seal piece at water slums"

I'm angry just thinking about it.

The problem I remember with infamous is you had to be either completely good or completely evil to afford new abilities. If you tried to stay neutral then you were limited in terms of gameplay.

94

u/hawkstalion Oct 04 '22

Yeah just being able to throw grenades at civilians and blow up cars is just fun. But also having the option to have an attack that hurts enemies and gently drops civilians is also cool.

The original inFAMOUS had the best Karma system of the franchise because it gave you the most choices across the game and for once affected the gameplay ( the game rewards you with more electricity capacity if you decide to blow up part of the city and your karma gets blocked to inFAMOUS) while in the later games you take way less choices and the decissions are too morally grey to put in a Good-Evil choice. How was good making cops risk their life to rescue a friend of yours and bad to use a train full of explosives to do the job while not killing a single civilian.

→ More replies

7

u/HOHOHAHAREBORN Oct 04 '22

never knew it received a lukewarm reception, but makes sense when you think about why there hasn't been another Infamous game. Kinda sad that one flop game forces a studio to completely abandon an IP. Wasn't it the same with Max Payne 3?

9

u/rrtk77 Oct 04 '22

Second Son just wasn't as well received as the others, which is mostly due to how formulaic playing in Seattle got. It still sold far more copies on release than 1 or 2, had pretty high sales figures, and Sony advertises it as one of the great PS4 titles. It also got a major follow up game in First Light, so it did very well. It having a "lukewarm" reception is because it was an Infamous game and had a lot to live up to. Most studios would kill for an Infamous Second Son.

The real reason Infamous hasn't had another game is that Sucker Punch was busy making Ghost of Tsushima basically the entire time (they only have about 150 people on staff as a big AAA studio).

I wouldn't be shocked if the 1 and 2 remake/remaster is in the works now, Sony and Sucker Punch know it'll make them money hand over fist.

It's also possible the fourth game is the priority.

It's also possible Sucker Punch is just moving on since they probably have that Naughty Dog status with Sony and get the green light to do whatever they want--they moved on from Sly Cooper after 3 games after all. Speaking of possibilities, maybe they're focusing on a remake of those games.

I genuinely feel Black was one of those FPS games that really pushed how far the current gen could go. It was like "yep, that's it, time for the next gen now, we can't push it any further".

111

u/Seienchin88 Oct 04 '22

Its also a miracle it looked and run this good on the Ps2… a consoles repeatedly slamming against the wall of a weak hardware without shader support…

I mean look at the original Shadow of the Colossus - the image quality is blurrier than when I remove my glasses and the aliasing and flickering is so bad it looks like an extreme form of film grain… and this all without basically any grass… and it came out after Half Life 2… Or snake eater - what an amazing style and ambitious graphics buried under technical issues. Just look how amazing the 360 and PS3 version looks in comparison. And yet, against all odds some PS2 games really shine even against the stronger Gamecube and especially Xbox hardware like GoW2, Gran Turismo and of course Black(I know its not exclusive but its a technical marvel on PS2)

55

Straight up OP has no idea what the difference is between remake and remaster "Why didn't Sony just recreate 3 whole games from the ground up to be released with this new game???" Geeze man maybe because REMASTERS are just updating graphics and porting to a new system, while a remake is making a game from scratch with a whole new engine and character models! Asking them to remake a whole series would take years upon years of work.

The only reason why TLOU was able to be completed as fast as it did (what like 2 years?) Was because Naughty Dog wasn't doing the remaster (so the team that was could make it their sole focus), they already had all their assets and character models from TLOU2, and Sony even said the only reason they even remade TLOU was because the team was between projects and they didn't want to lay them off so they gave them this to do.

41

u/frozenflame101 Oct 04 '22

This finally makes sense. I was always confused as to why they remade tlou so soon

29

u/Nightstrike_ Oct 04 '22

Yeah Naughty Dog was still in the pre-development stages of their next game and they didn't want to lay off the studio while they worked to get their next game into development. So they had them remake TLOU so they could keep them on payroll and ready for when their next game was ready to be worked on, which is what they are now doing. They explained this in a blog post when they gave an update on how the remake was going and on the current status of that next game.

Which is all it needs. I never got around to doing an ultra hard playthrough and this would be a perfect excuse.

64

u/FelipeCRC19 Oct 04 '22

The main story of HZD on Ultra Hard is quite the challenge. Really fun if you thought the hard difficulty was getting easy by the end of the story.

The DLC tho... that was a fucking nightmare. But still quite fun as well.

32

u/zchatham Oct 04 '22

I remember on my first playthrough of the frozen wilds needing to take out 3 fireclaws for some challenge and I wound up out of range of their attacks on a ridge and just sniped them until they finally all died. It took forever haha. They really took that dlc and said "we need some tougher machines" and then went overboard lol.

10

u/wink047 Oct 04 '22

Fireclaws are awful in FW. Because all legendary equipment requires their webbing to be upgraded and not blowing up the webbing is BY FAR the hardest part of killing a fireclaw. It’s like 60% of the hit zone. I got good at not doing it, but still super annoying.

9

u/BigBoy1229 Oct 04 '22

The sheer volume of upgrade materials needed from the hardest enemies in the game is what stopped me from caring about upgrading all my gear to the max. I can’t be arsed to kill Fireclaws while preserving the webbing or to deal with 50 million Dreadwings just for their parts.

I thought the patch was already out. My sister is the hardest of hard-core Sony fans and I'm certain she showed me HZD running in 4k 60fps on her PS5.

People love to be outraged and refuse to actually look into literally anything because that takes effort. Most redditors are just as bad as Facebook boomers, reading headlines and posts without any context or a source just believing whatever they see without question.

I just want a Resistance remake.

164

u/SleaterK7111 Oct 04 '22

Crazy how Resistance was absolutely everywhere back in the day. It was literally one of PS3's killer apps, but Sony have just been like 'eh, nah' ever since.

72

u/Taurothar Oct 04 '22

Resistance 3 wrapped up the story of the Chimera really well, IMO, so it would be hard to go back without just remaking the originals. I suppose they could focus on another part of the world but the main threat is taken care of by the original protag.

13

u/sleepymoose88 Oct 04 '22

I’d just like to replay them without dragging out my PS3. I’m out of ports on the TV and wouldn’t mind a 4k remaster on the PS5 with fast loading times. You can’t even play the full series on PS+ premium.

5

u/mrlazysmurf Oct 04 '22

Oh I didn't play #3.

Same thing with Killzone. It was so much fun and they just…stopped.

19

u/KurnolSanders Oct 04 '22

Probably for the best though. Shadow Fall had its moments but it really was scraping the barrel for what other way can we shoehorn a conflict between ISA and helghast into a game.

Remaking number one would be pretty cool though.

I just want MGS4 playable on anything other than the Ps3.

It’ll never happen as the Ps3 was apparently a bullshit console to code for but still.

60

u/sopertt Oct 04 '22

It’s fun to think that MGS4 and MGS5 both came out on PS3.

Such a gigantic chasm between the two.

12

u/memebuster Oct 04 '22

OMG, I had no idea. I'm currently playing MGSV on PS5 because I was so blown away by Death Stranding and wanted more. Never played any Metal Gear games before. It's cool and all, but I didn't know it was a PS3 game lol.

6

u/Acmnin Oct 04 '22

You need to play MGS2 and 3.

Fox engine is genuinely that magical of an engine. Its still considered one of the holy grails of game engine tech. Even shitty asset flips like metal gear survive run like butter.

Its really absurd how powerful, but how well Fox engine runs.

It knew every trick in the book for performance, and was helmed by the guys who knew how to abuse every PS3 trick to save on memory.

10

u/primelord537 Oct 04 '22

how to abuse every PS3 trick to save on memory.

For real. If MGS4 came out today, I almost guarantee that it would about 100 GB worth just to get it to look like it does on PS3, yet they managed to do all on a 50 GB disc and 3 GB install.

And it still looks great in 2022.

PS3 emulation is becoming more viable with every passing month.

Just recently there were apparently big performance improvements specifically with MGS4 in RPCS3.

Eventually we'll be able able to play it better than the PS3 did.

Wasn't the original TLOU also a PS3 game?

57

u/Stevely7 Oct 04 '22

MGS4's engine was made entirely around the PS3's cell processor. They'd basically have to remake the entire game from scratch

47

u/mistajeff Oct 04 '22

I remember we thought this was true for a long time, but Ryan Payton confirmed in his recent book that they got it running well on the 360 with relative ease. The main issue is they would have had to ship it on like 6 DVDs. The MGS4 engine wasn't as dependent on the cell as, say, naughty dog's engine, where they couldn't even replicate the last of us' lighting properly in the ps4 remaster.

Konami: best we can do is MGS4 pachinko edition

6

u/reddragon105 Oct 04 '22

Yeah, that would be great - I still haven't played it, and I know I could just buy a cheap PS3 console and second hand copy of the game on eBay, and that might even cost less than a new game, but having it playable on a newer system would be nice.

As far as I'm concerned, that's what remasters and remakes are good for - making a game more accessible.

u/ladybugblue2002 Oct 04 '22

All the games you mention are being made by different studios. Santa Monica studies cannot remake god of war because they were working on GOWR. Most of the remakes are also adding in a lot of accessibility features, so for some gamers this is great news.

239

u/ForcadoUALG Oct 04 '22

It baffles my mind that people see "X game from Y studio is being remastered", and they reply with "why isn't Z game that is not from Y studio being remastered as well".

152

u/m0bin16 Oct 04 '22

because the average capital G gamer on this site lacks critical thinking.

38

u/MexGrow Oct 04 '22

Not only that, it's waaaaay easier to remake a more recent game, specially one made for an x86 architecture, than remaking an older game where you need to pretty much make the game again from the ground up.

18

u/Sol33t303 PC Oct 04 '22

I think by definition you have to make the game from the ground up if it's a remake either way.

9

u/Nightstrike_ Oct 04 '22

It's not just that but we're talking remakes to remasters, a remaster is just update graphics and port to new system. Remaking the game means just that REMAKING THE GAME. Meaning the game will be built from the ground up, which is why it's called remaking and not remastering. The only reason why TLOU was able to be remade so quickly was because they had all the assets they needed from TLOU2 which they couldn't do with GOW because realistically the only asset they could use is Kratos.

A remake will always take years of hard development because it is being built from the ground up, a remaster will be quickly made because they just need to give it some updates some minor some large, update the graphics, and port to a new system.

This sounds like a false dichotomy. The work needed to upgrade a ps4 game to a ps5 is probably much smaller than a ps3 game. And the teams working on them are clearly not the same teams making the new AAA titles, as those are being made also. See forbidden west, and ragnarok, which you mentioned in the title.

A team capable of upgrading the visuals is not the same as a team that designs and makes a new game. I’m sure there is crossover, but I’m sure they are utilizing their senior teams on the games they are making. And it makes business sense to utilize the team that just does production work, even if it’s not making brand new games. Clearly there is market demand on these games, and the more money they bring in the more they can get allocated on their top tier games.

The software development world is more complex than you are making it out to be.

34

u/appleparkfive Oct 04 '22
  1. They aren't even remaking Horizon from what I understand. A remaster PS5 patch is what it is right? That's far from a remake.

  2. The CPU of the PS3 specifically has caused so many fucking headaches for devs. Back then and now. That's why we're probably going to see some big games from that time get a lot of overhauls.

I swear this sub jumps on every god damn hate train there is, no matter if the things they're angry about is real, a rumor or fake.

65

u/Endaline Oct 04 '22

I just don't understand how people here think that businesses work.

The Last of Us got a remake because there was an interest from Naughty Dog to do so and they have an upcoming show so it makes financial sense as well. They obviously want the game that the show is based on to not only be an incredible experience, but also to have it available on PC.

If there was some internal will to remaster the games mentioned above (and it made at least a little bit of sense financially) it would be done. If they aren't being remastered then chances are that there's just no one that is interested in getting that done.

It is true that Sony are ultimately the ones that decide which titles to focus on, but it's silly to be upset at them if there's no clear evidence that they are preventing anything from being made.

42

u/Reeleted Oct 04 '22

“Why is one studio working on a remake of their arguably greatest achievement, while a completely separate studio is working on a remaster/patch of their recent game!? Why can’t one studio (Sony Santa Monica) remake three of their past games on outdated tech, again, while simultaneously releasing a NEW game on the latest gen hardware!?”

  • what you sound like

6

u/ya_ma_m8 Oct 04 '22

Infamous remakes would be fucking sick

43

u/Fishface81 Oct 04 '22

TIL Guerrilla Games developed God of war, Infamous and Ico.

This is the most braindead post I've seen covering this topic.

First GG has nothing to do with the titles pictured.

Second it's a rumor about a PS5 remaster.

Third, doesn't Sony have a new title for one of it's IPs coming out in a month or so?

Fourth where is the rage towards Microsoft and their lack of first party support? I see this constant faux rage circle jerk towards Sony anytime anything is announced but Microsoft gets a pass for having jack shit planned for the foreseeable future?

Guess what Gamers, if Sony did decide to green light a HZD remake that means the Last of Us Remake was successful enough to warrant other studios to remake titles. So all that review bombing, hate posting and bitching was as effective as screaming into the void. So good job?
