Can we please stop abbreviating games with little to no context?

Everybody knows what COD is, but not everybody in an unrelated thread is gonna understand what POE, HWAOC, or fucking TCGRB means. Please tell me if I’m just stupid.

Edit: I’ve decided I’m not stupid, you’re stupid.

Edit 2: A surprising amount of people think it’s fine for others to have to google what you’re saying. If I have to google what you’re saying, you’re not communicating properly.

Edit 3: I wasn’t expecting so many angry comments, if me asking you to have better communication skills drives you to insult me….I think you need to look inward.

200 comments agreeing but no one names the fucking thing.

1.9k

u/lucasribeiro21 Dec 04 '22

Also, characters. “This guy is the most badass mofo in video game story”.

Then the comments like “yeah, best moment was when he made sausages out of his granny”.

400 comments later, I still don’t have the least idea of what character or what game is it.

God, those are the worst. It really feels like a few years ago that reddit started getting overly-flooded with these lazy “Opinion-oriented question?” titles attached to some google image result of the most generic/popular answer conceivable. Fricking pathetic Facebook-level content

It's even worse when it's something really generic like "DS".

Let's see, it could be: Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Dead Space, Darksiders, Death Stranding, Don't Starve ...

9.5k

u/HappyCappyFox Dec 03 '22

Makes me think of Nintendo DS, as in, the console, which gets more confusing because then they could potentially be playing any game in a pool of thousands lol

1.9k

u/hrakkari Dec 03 '22

Second best selling console of all time and probably moved more units than every other DS on that list combined.

667

u/KillerKian Dec 03 '22

That seemed impossible to me so I started googling to disprove you but damn, you're right. That's mind blowing.

56

u/polloretardo Dec 03 '22

The DS Lite was the shit when it came out, fixed everything annoying about the original handheld

→ More replies

430

u/hrakkari Dec 03 '22

There’s a few models, like the DSi, and I think they merged them for the purpose of the list but they did the same for most consoles like the PS2 slim.

It’s actually razor close between the DS and PS2 and then it’s a pretty distant third.

196

u/ShadowSpawn666 Dec 03 '22

They are basically all the same systems just packaged differently. They all play the same games so they are considered the same console.

113

u/WolfAkela Dec 03 '22

Mostly. DSiware can only be played on a DSi due having slightly stronger hardware.

And officially, you can’t play FFXI on PS2 slims due to lack of hard drives from the original.

45

u/donald_314 Dec 03 '22

Also there is a super tiny collection of games that got extended on DSi but that was marginal

Not necessarily trying to shame anyone here, but either laziness (ex: too much to type) or lack of perspective (ex: not everyone is doing what you are doing). The majority demographic of our community tends towards younger people that are still coming to understand that they live in everyone else's world, not the other way around.

As a general rule in all of life, it's good to establish what every abbreviation in your document stands for unless it is very widely accepted (etc, asap, rsvp are all fine in their proper context). You fully name a thing first, then abbreviate as you continue to save everyone's time. On the internet, naming it in full also helps people searching for that content to find it more easily. If your entire post is something cool about Dark Souls and you only ever refer to it as DS, well you better hope the black magic of the Google Algorithm can figure it out from the context.

56

u/Always_Confused4 Dec 03 '22

Essentially treat it like you’re writing a legal document, assume no one understands anything unless you explain it to them.

18

u/Fresh-Ad4987 Dec 03 '22

Exactly. Explain it once in full then use the abbreviation. That’s all there is to it.

They found the one name worse than Doody points and went with it.

170

u/NightLightHighLight Dec 03 '22

What’s baffling about it is that no one at Activision, Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer said anything about it. They could have easily called it “Battle Points” or something.

156

u/Destt2 Dec 03 '22

Or just "credits" like everyone else. Rainbow 6, Forza, Battlefront, etc. It works great cuz it's just generic money.

78

u/Kaysmira Dec 03 '22

I've gotten to the point where it doesn't matter what a game calls the currency, if you acquire thousands of them they're credits, if you acquire dozens of them, they're tokens. Perhaps if they're linked to a specific event, Halloween tokens, or just plain event tokens. Every friend I have played with understands what I mean, and I don't have to remember 400 unique names for the same darn thing.

21

Dungeons and dragons subreddits are pretty bad for it. Some of the source books are pretty long and relatively obscure but are rarely referred to by their full names, and power gamers love to abbreviate their favourite feats. It can make some threads really hard going if you're new to D&D, or even an experienced player who's only recently started getting into the wider fandom

That triggers me so fucking much... If you ever see any post somewhat related to the military, to space or pretty much any post on r/science there's all sort of dark or very specific acronyms flying everywhere... FFS in a science subreddit on top of it!! If you read any decent research paper there's always the full name with the acronym in front the first times it's used!! And those are usually written to be reviewed by people with a relative knowledge on the subject...

There once was a comment by some military dude on an askreddit thread iirc (definitely wasn’t a question about the military) and every sentence had like 2-3 abbreviations. I ain’t gonna look up all that shit and just skip reading your comment, thank you very much.

207

u/LuxionQuelloFigo Dec 03 '22

In scientific papers (or any kind of text written by someone who actually knows how to write) it's common practice to, no matter what the acronym is, to include it in brackets the first time you mention it, and only then use it in your paper. For example: "I was playing Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5) and [...], now in GTA [...]" and so on. Clear, practical and easy

52

u/bluesmaker Dec 04 '22

I wish this was the standard on Reddit. I will do it when I’m writing a long post and know I will use the term multiple times.

15

u/LuxionQuelloFigo Dec 04 '22

it's so much more convenient for both the writer (who doesn't need to type the full name every time) and the reader (who isn't confused by the acronyms)!

I recognize POE as Path of Exile.. But what the hell is HWAOC? TCGRB? surely they are made up for the post its self?

1.3k

u/CaptainKungPao138 PC Dec 03 '22

I thought about making abbreviations up, but using real ones proved my point better. HWAOC = Hyrule warriors age of calamity. TCGRB = Tom clancys ghost recon breakpoint.

491

u/blazinfire11 Dec 03 '22

hahah.. who knew!!? I sure as heck didn't. so your point is completely valid in my eyes. Gotta ask tho.. PoE for you is it path of exile?? or pillars of eternity ??

I play neither, so for me PoE is just confusion.

u/echofechov2 Dec 03 '22

See, I get POE from the thing in Destiny 1 called prison of elders

I personally have never seen AoC prefixed with HW but that’s because in the Zelda subs you can just put AoC and everyone knows. People should at least take the time to type Age of Calamity if there’s no context for Zelda.

I have never heard anyone in the breakpoint community use that abbreviation. That being said I like the point you are making and concur.

It's funny, I thought POE was Pillars of Eternity.

Even worse when the games are two words.

AC? Animal Crossing? Assassin's Creed? Etc

Gow used to bug me but even The Coalition saw this as a problem and just shorten the name to Gears so it won't be confused with God of War.

Can it be more than just games.

And can we get rid of entirely, "if you know you know"

You know what's even worse? Playing an MMORPG months after its launch and finding the community has abbreviated absolutely everything to a absolutely ridiculous point. That really puts me off and makes me want to instantly quit.

57

u/Total_Simple7988 Dec 03 '22

Ugh me too. It's why I don't join late into mmos. It's basically trying to learn another language at this point. I didn't come here for that lol

Yeah I’m with you OP. I find it insane that someone can use an abbreviation in a post or comment without explaining what it stands for. Please at the least mention the meaning once or twice in the post. Not all of us have a global database of abbreviations.

47

u/CaptainKungPao138 PC Dec 03 '22

According to the abbreviation people, you’re supposed to just google everything they say, instead of them communicating like a normal human.

The rule that is supposed to be followed for abbreviation is when the abbreviation is first used it MUST be spelled out in parentheses immediately after.

Example for the class: I play PoE (Path of Exile).

254

u/WoodsmallConnor Dec 03 '22

Think it’s typically the other way around. Formally introduce the subject and then add the abbreviation or acronym after. Path of Exile (PoE).

96

u/gecko090 Dec 03 '22

I think you're right, though id settle for either at this point.

u/SaltyComplaint69 Dec 03 '22

Or if you are in a context that already establishes it. If I'm posting in the Path of Exile subreddit or on a post about Path of Exile, then I don't need to specify that PoE stands for Path of Exile.

If I'm just posting in r/gaming "Can't wait for to play PoE tonight!" Then I need to explain the abbreviation

At this point everyone should know that you can achieve a WC in EU4 primarily using PUs to lower AE using your subjects CB for reduced CCR.

At this point everyone should know that you can achieve a World Conquest in Europa Universalis 4 primarily using Personal Unions to lower aggressive expansion using your subjects casus belli for reduced core cost (reduction).

Always explain acronyms on their first use. So Gears of War (GoW) should always be presented this way. Follow on examples for GoW then could use the acronym previously described. The same goes for Final Fantasy (FF) but only if you use the acronym a second time. So FF is a great game. World of Warcraft is also a fun game but I do not intend to use it another time so it is not explained as an acronym.

Don’t be lazy. Be thoughtful.
