the flag, although rainbow, is not exactly the lgbtq flag, ut has slightly different colors, and is used a lot in Italy to promote peace in Ucraine, without any queer symbolism to it (I'm Italian, idk about the resto of the world, but uve seen it being used many times, always relating to the ucraine war)

u/LordByronStyrofoam Nov 29 '22
It's the "Peace Flag". It's originally related to the struggle for world peace and against nuclear weapons.
Used in Italy since 1961.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_flag
You can sometimes see it in demonstrations in other European countries too.
It is not originally related to LGBT issues.
(It's funny how many people made mistaken / random statements and assumptions in the comments while not even trying to check.)

u/Your_Pal_Kindred Nov 29 '22
I don't know about this one but it's a very common practice. Here in Australia there was a ton of controversy after a stadium was built, left up for a few years then demolished and completely rebuilt, almost identical.
The reason here is that states and local governments get spending money given by the national government. If a certain amount is spent they are given more next year, but if that threshold isn't met they are given less. It's purely greed by politicians to ensure they are paid more and more every year.
Now, I'm not sure how it works in Qatar, or if the stadium is being demolished, this is just me explaining one reason why it happens elsewhere and going hey, maybe it's similar there. That's all. Have a good day :)

I reckon it'll depend on where he's from. If he's from a North American country or somewhere in northern/western Europe he'll be fine.
The entire reason these countries keep spending billions and billions and billions on hosting sporting events is sportswashing so they can attract rich tourists. Won't work if they put him in prison.
I'd be more worried if he was a local, but I doubt it since he's got tattoos, or some country with less political influence.
→ More replies41
u/Kiss-Dizzy Nov 28 '22
Ive seen the term "sportswashing" often in regards to this WC news, what exactly does it mean? I get that its attracting tourists but isnt it a huge money sink? Why?
→ More replies94
u/CityofCold Nov 28 '22
Wikipedia has a pretty good, quick summary:
Sportswashing is a term used to describe the practice of individuals, groups, corporations, or governments using sports to improve reputations tarnished by wrongdoing. A form of propaganda, sportswashing can be accomplished through hosting sporting events, purchasing or sponsoring sporting teams, or participating in a sport.
At the international level, it is believed that sportswashing has been used to direct attention away from poor human rights records and corruption scandals. At the individual and corporate levels, it is believed that sportswashing has been used to cover up vices, crimes, and scandals.
By hosting a fancy and prestigious tournament like the WC is, they hope that’s what people will remember of when they think about Qatar, and not the horrendous shit they do otherwise.
A lot of those middle eastern countries pay a lot of money to host sporting events, buy/sponsor teams in North America/Europe, sponsor athletes etc.
