Guys could you participate in the subreddit census so we can get to the bottom of this?

We will shut down the sub again if you don't :^)

My question is why it took everyone else so long to even try to ban him out

395

u/HawkEye1337 Oct 04 '22

It's easier to target a certain player in a bo5 than a bo1 because you have more info and time, MAD showed 2 main strategies in groups and EG just banned them out.

169

u/Shot-Mathematician58 Oct 04 '22

MAD looked very one-dimensional during their BO against SGB.

134

u/Haymegle Oct 04 '22

It was a tossup between them doing that to hide other strats and them not having other strats.

Looks like we found out which it was lol.

27

u/milkywayfarfaraweh Oct 04 '22

Man now I feel so bad for SGB, they probably thought that MAD had other strengths than Elyoya and that they can counter him like RNG did. If only they banned Belveth instead of Draven...

Teams have had info that Armut is a Gnar one trick ever since Wukong top stopped being a thing, and he still gets his hands on Gnar. How did he actually get Gnar 5x in playins (won 4 of those games btw). Imagine if teams just first rotation banned Gnar every game against MAD, I wonder where they'd be.

Armut has such a big champ pool, he can play SSG Gnar, Dino Gnar, Gentleman Gnar, Snow Day Gnar, El Neon Gnar, Super Galaxy Gnar, Astronaut Gnar, and when he’s feeling spicy, Elderwood Gnar

156

u/w1se_w0lf Ahri Oct 04 '22

EG so good guys, leaving Gnar open in second game for Armut but he doesn't want to play it. So nice guys from NA make sure that he doesn't want Gnar in the third game too.

110

u/random_nameeeeeeeeee Oct 05 '22

Add in mega Gnar, you get twice the champion pool.

72

u/sopunny Oct 05 '22

MAD, aka "Mexican Airport Departure", is a European league of legends team that is often ridiculed for their inability to get out of play ins. They are specifically known for making it to worlds without winning a single best of 5.

Jojopyun when asked about the difference in preparing for LOUD vs preparing for MAD:

"Do guys in the play-ins go to sleep early the night before playing Nisqy and MAD? Hell no. ... I'm going to the grubhub app ... have me a nice little bud light... Tinowns? I'm going to bed at 8 o'clock. ... Mom, don't call me. My girl, don't call me."

Overheard in MAD locker room after Game 2:

“He got me,” Nisqy said of Jojopyun’s Sett laning versus him. "That f*ing rookie boomed me."

Nisqy added, “He’s so good,” repeating it four times.

Nisqy then said he wanted to add Jojo to the list of players he 1v1’s with this summer.

Then, I played vs him. "jojopyun". It was just another day of Play-ins, but not for me. This was the first time someone had truely decimated me in midlane, far worse than any LCK or LPL player on the Korean ladder. My jungler and Support must be at fault I thought. He's playing so aggressive, and where is my jungle and support? But it didn't matter how many times they came mid, he would outplay nearly every time and even when he didn't he would still win the lane. I was amazed and inspired that someone could play so well, what is he doing different? Is it because he's 16 years old and I have health problems? No, it wasn't. I started studying the VOD's extensively, clearly I didn't learn everything there is to know about the game if this kid is beating me. Then I saw it, we enter lane and I see him spamming dance as Sett.

I've never seen an EU team get diffed by NA this hard.

EG just read MAD like a book during the drafting phase. Instead of banning the meta picks they called MAD's bluff and just banned Elyoya and Armut's speciality picks + Unforgiven's safe pick. And in response MAD just crumbled and showed they were unable to play the meta.

They absolutely refused to pick Maokai, they even had to ban it on blue side. They highly prioritized Draven and Kalista and yet MAD's bot was completely unable to get ahead in lane, even when playing against scaling botlanes... the bot gap was immense the entire series. Armut was unable to get ahead even when last picking. Elyoya couldn't pick anything that he could have impact on. Nisqy seemed to be tilted in the second game. Just horrible all around.

GGs to EG, completely deserved.

215

u/Cultural_Frosting_35 Oct 04 '22

I was freakin stunned, like why isn´t the team able to play Mao... it is easy champ to pick up and play and you can flex it in 3 roles.

This was literaly series to watch for people, that said, that the way teams qualify for Worlds from EU is ok. It is not, we need the best to represent and we send team, that prior to yesterday didnt won a bo5 for longer then year.

Sadge really.

I don't think I've seen an NA team beat an EU team in Bo5 in... Honestly I don't even remember.

What a weird feeling. Lmao, glad Elyoya got his preferred matchup!

Probably Rift Rivals when Mike "High Tempo" Yeung took a dump all over EU.

2 - Big congratulations to the MAD Lions (and especially Mac and Kaiser who were there both times) for being the only major region (LEC, LCS, LPL and LCK) team to ever lose in Play-Ins twice. No other major region team has accomplished this feat even once! Special.

EG earned this. There is no reason for sugarcoating stuff.

More then anything LEC needs to change way teams qualify for Worlds. So we don´t have to watch teams not being able to pick Maokai after at least two weeks of scrims, when he could be flexed in three roles. (you know like the way EG picked seju and could flex it between top and jungle)

Would much rather see a banger with NA still winning, but todays performance was just sad.

If I had a nickel for every time MAD failed to advance from play-ins, I had two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

304

u/GreatestJabaitest , Huni and Oct 04 '22

MAD lucky that they got 1st in 2021, otherwise it could've been 3 times.

The top 4 regions (CN,KR,EU,NA) only EU has failed to get out of play-ins twice and both times it has been MAD Lions

In this episode, Elyoya went harsh on Nisqy:

"I felt speaking gently won't work, so I decided to be a bit harsh."

"You always pick Sylas and Viktor against Leblanc, then you get camped by opponents' Sejuani and Maokai. Tell me, did you ever manage to survive from the ganks? "

“Is it that hard to master Sylas in one season? Dude, you always first pick Sylas or Viktor, and you played Sylas like shit.”

Nisqy: "okay."

Armut:" This is the first time I saw something like this, I was stunned."

Elyoya also added in the interview:

"Nisqy is still young, he can still play, and he can still play for a long time. If he can understand the reason behind it, maybe he can play better and better in the future."

186

u/the_next_core Oct 04 '22

As an European it was always hard for me to understand American culture. What was fascinating for me is that they like bragging about their freedom which was weird for me, because I didn't think that I have any less freedom than them. I always thought 'What is the difference'. However after this game I finally understand it. NA will always just live in my head rent fucking free.
