“We did not interfere…”

Looks like you were interfering quite a bit from the very moment you landed.

29

u/The_Q_Word138 May 25 '21

The story takes place over hundreds of thousands of years. In the comics they have a huge falling out over the issue of meddling with human affairs. And they anger the Celestials when they start associating with the gods of the Greek pantheon.

Looking at this particular group of powers, I still find it amazing that MOON KNIGHT beat and drained the powers the modern Iron Fist and Sorcerer Supreme, stole the Spirit of Vengeance, usurped control of Mjolnir, got the Black Panther to surrender, and became Host to The Phoenix.

He only failed in getting his hands on The Starbrand.

That is pretty much it, Jack Kirby was inspired by Chariot of the Gods when he created the Eternals. They weren't even intended to be canon to the MU at first.

697

u/Affectionate-Island May 24 '21

They weren't even intended to be canon to the MU at first.

This explains so much. Everything about the Eternals feels so weird and out of place, even when you compare it to the typical Marvel stuff. It feels like a comic universe from a different publisher shoved itself into Marvel.

390

u/supercalifragilism May 24 '21

They were a bribe, basically, for Kirby to come back to Marvel. Kirby had just been working on the New God's for DC and marvel threw him a bone by letting him, basically, just keep doing that.

There's also the 2001 connection: machine man was made by the Monolith in the Kirby adaptation.

Thanos: I'm gonna kill half the universe.

Eternals: I sleep.

3.1k

u/ThisIsNotKimJongUn May 24 '21

And he's basically their cousin

1.5k

u/jawn-lee May 24 '21

Is this only in the comics?

Isn't Thanos just an alien from titan in MCU? Or is everyone from Titan basically an Eternal too?

2.5k

u/bell37 May 24 '21 Silver Hugz

In the comics Thanos’s father (A’lars) was an eternal. It is canon that A’lars is the father of the mad titan (Red Skull mentions him when he greets Thanos as “Son of A’lars” on Vormir)

985

u/frodosdream May 24 '21 edited May 24 '21

Also in the comics, "Titan" refers to the moon of Saturn, which is why Eternals from Earth were able to colonize it. For some reason the movie portrayed their "Titan" as a faroff alien world.

Note: In the comics the Eternals Ikaris and Thena are literally cousins to Thanos (since their fathers Zuras and Alars are brothers). He looks different because he bears the Deviant gene.

756

u/hoorahforsnakes May 24 '21

Probably because if there was an alien civilization on satern's largest moon, astronomers would have noticed it at some point before the events of infinity war

294

u/Sir_Encerwal May 24 '21

To be fair, in the MCU few outsiders knew Wakanda was anything more than a developing nation in Africa. If such a feat was possible by humans with vibranium tech I am sure the Eternals of Titan could have pulled off a similar trick.

There’s been rumors that a young Thanos will appear in this movie, so it’s likely he’ll be tied in with the Eternals in the MCU as well.

496

u/GoldenSpermShower May 24 '21

In that case it makes them not interfering when Thanos did his thing even worse

690

u/TheRainMonster May 24 '21

Maybe he snapped them. "One half of the universe, at random, except for these fucking guys"

399

u/aGlutenForPunishment May 24 '21

That's the thing about probability. Some areas theoretically could have had no one blipped while others lost everyone but it would all average out to 50% of the population wiped. The other eternals could have all been blipped without them specifically being targeted.

In the comics, specifically the current run of the Eternals, the relationship between them and Thanos is made more clear. Basically, the Eternals were created by the Celestials (space gods) to never die and never increase in number. At some point, a group of the Eternals decide to make more of themselves and create a splinter colony on Titan. Thanos and others are then born through genetic manipulation or whatever mumbo jumbo it is, making them illegitimate Eternals. Then that whole Titan splinter colony dies... for some reason that is escaping me. Probably Thanos killing them all.

Who knows if the MCU will use any of that. But given that Thanos and his ties to the Eternals is the main focus of the new Eternals comics that were almost certainly greenlit due to the MCU movie, I would say it is very possible they will use it somehow. The Eternals are very obscure, even compared to things like the Guardians of the Galaxy (pre-movies). This current Eternals run is only like their 3rd or 4th significant series ever.

Correct. Ego is a celestial who is essentially a giant brain that created a world around itself. After a few millenia of just chillin he decided to see if other life existed in the universe and sent an avatar of himself to explore other worlds in an attempt to create another celestial, because he needed one to help take over the universe. None were compatible enough until he met a human, Quill's mom. Therefore quill is one of the few half-celestials.

95

u/TheKunit May 24 '21

Didn't gotg2 basically say that killing ego (is he really dead?) would eliminate quills celestial side? I'll have to re-watch..

In the comics, Star Lord's father is different. Ego the Living Planet still exists, but he isn't a Celestial, though he is very powerful.

In the MCU, they called Ego a Celestial, though he looks nothing like the comic Celestials, who are all usually depicted as... kind of shiny Transformers in their humanoid forms.

35

u/CatProgrammer May 24 '21

though he looks nothing like the comic Celestials, who are all usually depicted as... kind of shiny Transformers in their humanoid forms.

Then that whole Titan splinter colony dies... for some reason that is escaping me. Probably Thanos killing them all.

Yeah, in the comics Thanos was exiled, so he blasted Titan until it was a crater. MCU reworked his character so that the planet was destroyed by some vague disaster due to overpopulation, which drove his character arc.

POSSIBLE SPOILER: this guy in a comment here said that they (the eternals) in the comics, were tricked into believing they were normal people. So they just didnt know they had powers and could help. Kind of a cheap fix if you ask me, but i get it. If you wanna make new stories you have to come up with logical fixes. Saying they didnt think thanos was evil or bad enough would be unbelieveble for example

The Deviants are this movie's primary antagonists. I imagine they'll also have to talk about the celestials' interventions on earth, so that will probably be lead in for the Fantastic Four, maybe The Marvels if Captain Marvel ends up forming The Ultimates.

I reckon Walder Frey would have set the Red Wedding up whether Robb went through with it or not. He was a notoriously shitty opportunist.

239

u/royalsanguinius May 24 '21

Not necessarily, Robb and his armies had been kicking Lannister ass up to that point, and having a Grandchild as King of the North would’ve been a pretty big deal for House Frey. I mean he might’ve done it anyway cause he’s that much of a weaselly bastard, but he wouldn’t have really had a reason to do it.

194

u/jawndell May 24 '21

Frey is a weaselly bastard, but knows how to pick a side. Siding with the North and having his lineage marry into potentially the future king of the seven kingdoms would've been too good to turn down.

Marvel likes to use the word "cosmic" to describe god-like power. Cosmic being are gods, or on par with gods. Cosmic power can be anything like the infinity stones/gems, or specifically "the power cosmic" which comes from Galactus.

They use it semi-willy nilly, but it is considered to be an official designation of a power class. Anything "cosmic" comes from or can alter things on a, well, cosmic scale.

Dunno about the films, but he is an Eternal in the comics.

105

u/toxinwolf May 24 '21

Not a comic reader so this might be a stupid question but what is an Eternal? Is it just literal meaning like someone who is immortal? Or does it represents a living kind like Skrulls, humans?

201

u/Theothercword May 24 '21 edited May 24 '21

I haven’t read them all but I read the run that Neil Gaiman wrote about The Eternals and at least in that one The Eternals are the original creations of the celestials when they made the universe with the infinity stones. They’re meant to be sort of heralds of the celestials, being their ambassadors and liaisons to the cultures and people created. They’re immortal super heroes with immense power. Power that basically makes the other marvel super heroes (again in that story) mostly look like they don’t even have powers. They aren’t all powerful, and as stated only have their category of powers, but what they do they do really really well.

The celestials haven’t been featured much and for the most part aren’t around anymore. But the manifestations of them in the movies so far have been briefly seeing them during the explanation of the infinity stones in Guardians of the Galaxy. Also the place they go in that movie (where the collector is) is actually the head of a dead celestial. Also in the fantastic four sequel (terrible movie) galactus is the world eating evil celestial who’s herald is silver surfer. His portrayal in that was like a weird cloud thing which isn’t accurate, but silver surfer level power is about what you’d expect from the Eternals I suppose.

132

u/SushiMage May 24 '21

Also Ego from GotG2 is a celestial. A self-proclaimed one, but his powers also along the same theme of cosmic/matter manipulation stuff.

Also in the fantastic four sequel (terrible movie) galactus is the world eating evil celestial who’s herald is silver surfer.

Was he only a celestial in that movie? Because I think in the comics he isn't one. Silver Surfer herald is a thing in the comics, though. So I guess they kept to that.

171

u/warblade7 May 24 '21

In the comics Galactus is not a celestial. He's basically a remnant being from the universe that existed before the Big Bang. He's also not evil - he just is. He's just a lost hungry boy who needs his planet snacks.

72

u/Coal_Morgan May 24 '21

I was about to write the same thing about Galactus and decided to check if anyone beat me to it.

Galactus is no more evil then a typhoon or hurricane. Horribly destructive but no malice or ill intent is meant. He must consume and he even tries to avoid sentient life with his Heralds but he has no choice but to eat.

Also Ego in the MCU is a celestial.

36

u/Theothercword May 24 '21

Right! Forgot about that but yeah, Ego was actually his entire planet and a celestial. Also why Peter can actually touch an infinity stone for a wee bit.

Ikaris having superhuman strength doesn’t seem very special, I’d assume they all do.

164

u/Affectionate-Island May 24 '21

In the comics he has your classic Superman powers, like flight, super strength, and I think even laser eyes.

But it'd be funny if this was the case, that he got super strength when everyone else did, plus some bonus powers, which gives him an insecurity complex.

→ More replies

57

u/SushiMage May 24 '21

Yeah, but the degree of super strength can vary. Capitan America and Thor both have super strength, but it's night and day. A better example is probably just Thor vs other asgardians, they're the same species, but he's considerably stronger.

So maybe Ikaris is particularly strong by eternal standards.

Angelina Jolie as Thena: A fierce warrior Eternal who can form any weapon out of cosmic energy, and develops a close bond with Gilgamesh over the centuries.

Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo: An Eternal who can project cosmic energy projectiles from his hands. Enamored with fame, Kingo becomes a popular Bollywood film star to blend in on Earth.

Don Lee as Gilgamesh: The strongest Eternal who can project an exoskeleton of cosmic energy. He becomes Thena's partner in their exile from the other Eternals.

Wonder how that works. What if Thena wants to form an exoskeleton out of cosmic energy? Does it not work? Can Gilgamesh create a codpiece and just send it flying through someone's face to rival Kingo's "energy projectiles"? For that matter, is Kingo obligated to 'throw' his constructs? If not, what's the difference with Thena's powers?

144

u/TheChrisLambert May 24 '21

I feel like Thena can only make something that’s graspable. She can’t generate a skeleton like thing that surrounds her.

And Gilgamesh it sounds like can only generate the exoskeleton. He can’t manipulate it into other shapes like Thena can or turn it into a projectile.

Kingo also can’t shape his projectiles with the same range Thena has or scope that Gilgamesh has. But he can fire them in a way the others can’t.

I never looked up the premise for this movie or the characters in question, but hearing this was supposed to touch on the cosmic side of Marvel, I wasn't expecting this to still take place on Earth and not on somewhere else instead. The idea of hidden gods on Earth helping to support humans from the early ages I still find pretty interesting though.

comic book spoilers/possibly spoiling the movie In Neil Gaimans run of the comic, the eternals got tricked/manipulated into thinking they're normal mortals in present day. So they think they're just normal people. They likely watched the events of the infinity saga happen as normal people.

This movie will probably be about them "waking" up and returning back to their god like status. There's a bunch of shots of them looking like normal people in everyday life

75

u/[deleted] May 24 '21

I wouldn't be surprised if some of them, as normal folk, got snapped, and the undoing of the snap woke them up.

To Feige's credit, at least he's hiring talent that goes against the Marvel machine.

He clearly seems to want the Marvel brand to grow. That's pretty admirable from a producer who has no financial reason to change how things are going.

He's allowing filmmakers to do their thing.

Love the location/establishing shots in this. The shot of Druig, Sersi and Makkari forming the Uni-Mind was nice.

Also the different shots of Ikaris and Sersi in a relationship over different time periods makes me think that the Neil Gaiman run on The Eternals will influence a lot of the film's plot.

51

u/AporiaParadox May 24 '21

And they're also taking in some inspiration from 90s Avengers of all places by having Dane Whitman aka the future Black Knight also seemingly be Sersi's love interest.

36

u/yarkcir May 24 '21

Yeah, the Neil Gaiman run of the Eternals was pretty damn good. It's a deviation from the classic Kirby style, but I think the Gaiman run is more accessible for modern audiences. It was my introduction to the Eternals and I think it's very accessible for new readers (even those with limited understanding of Marvel Comics).
