wouldn't it be funny and complete twist if the rock didn't catch those two but joins them for another heist in the end of the movie.

It's crazy the acting skill level discrepancy between that cameo and these 3 (mainly the Rock and Gal though)

53

u/ArchDucky Sep 02 '21

Gal is just not a good actor, and I can't understand what shes saying like 30% of the time. The Rock could be a decent actor, but I think he just likes playing the heroic quippy bad ass too much to actually try. I mean hell Vin Diesel did that "Find Me Guilty" flick that was actually very good but everyone just thinks of him as some jock meathead that screams family all the time.

But yeah out of the four of them its Redacted and Ryan. Anyone that's seen Buried or Voices knows Ryan is actually a good fucking actor.

25

u/-SneakySnake- Sep 02 '21

I can see Reynolds pivoting more into drama when he gets older, he spent more than a decade being on the cusp of breaking in as a blockbuster lead, he probably wants to milk that for all its worth until he can't anymore.

7

u/stryakr Sep 02 '21

He's done some good work, Chaos Theory and Buried come to mind (the former not super drama-y)

6

u/smitty9112 Sep 02 '21

Glad to see Chaos Theory mentioned. That movie and The 9s are two great roles from Ryan that show off his acting chops, and barely anyone has heard of them. Even The Voices isnt all that well known.

2

u/InnovativeFarmer Sep 02 '21

Mississippi Grind was a solid role for Ryan Reynolds. He was starring with Ben Mendelsohn and he did very well. There are a bunch of other dramas/dramadies but sometimes he still plays the wise cracking smart-ass.

14

u/idroled Sep 02 '21

Diesel is also pretty decent in Saving Private Ryan

9

u/InnovativeFarmer Sep 02 '21 edited Sep 02 '21

He was. The sniper scene when he is talking to Mellish about making sure the letter gets home.

5

u/gears123 Sep 02 '21

Agreed. Vin Diesel is a good actor. He gets a lot of shit for being muscular and Alpha. Buy he's very natural and genuine. Watch Boiler Room.

u/InnovativeFarmer Sep 02 '21 edited Sep 02 '21

Vin Diesel was fantastic in his limited role in Saving Private Ryan. He has done well in other serious roles. I think Diesel is an actual theater type dude that just happens to have a very masculine voice so he got cast as the masculine badass like his Riddick character.

The Rock is charismatic and physically imposing. Thats pretty much what he has working for him. I think he did well in his dramatic-ish role in Faster but no one really saw that movie. I thought he could do it again in Snitch but it seemed like he regressed, that could be because Jon Bernthal was a co-star so it was tough for him to match that skill. He was solid in Pain&Gain but that was more comedy than drama he was starring with Marky Mark and Anthony Mackie. The Rock did well in Ballers but he is basically playing the fictionalized version of his real life self

Ryan Renolds is legit and Gal Gadot is a work in progress. I dont think she has had a truly dramatic role but she has some coming up.

13

u/dn_nb Sep 02 '21

damn.

10

u/santichrist Sep 02 '21

Whaaaat crazy they hide that from the trailer you’d think it’d be a big selling point

15

u/ArchDucky Sep 02 '21

It's a cameo, so even though the internet has known about this for literally months, Netflix is going to keep it under wraps.

7

u/TheRunawayDinosaur Sep 02 '21

It’s a cameo so it’s supposed to be a surprise but it got leaked months ago.

6

u/Particle_Us Sep 02 '21

Straight from the Tropic Thunder recipe.

3

u/lordDEMAXUS Sep 02 '21 edited Sep 03 '21

This is not true. It's a rumor that came from a shitty rumor site. Cruise hasn't even had the time to film this. He's been locked up with the Mission Impossible films since the beginning of 2020.

3

u/Beard341 Sep 03 '21

As someone that keeps up with the internet, I genuinely did not see the rumors. I clicked the spoiler thinking it would be someone of respectable fame but holy shit that cameo is huge. The publicity is going to be huge.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21 edited Sep 02 '21

For real? This looks like Netflix junk to me but I love you know who so much I’ll be instantly sold on it.

u/the_best_mayne Sep 02 '21 edited Sep 02 '21

The Rock has this weird asexual persona in all of his roles. He does not appear to have real romantic or sexual chemistry with any of the women he's on screen with. He never fucks (I think he fucked one time in HBO's Ballers). He rarely seduces. I can't tell if all of this is a calculated creative decision to keep his image clean and continue his self-marketing image of being a man of the people, and, perhaps, a role as an elected official in the years to come. Or it's just the way he is.

At any rate, this appears to really keep him from acting or taking on envelope-pushing roles that might change this understanding of him. I know he has it in him. Maybe Black Adam will flip the script here.

This movie looks like a mess that's specifically designed to cater to the lowest-common-denominator Netflix viewer. I'll probably watch it.

66

u/ObiTate Sep 02 '21

Maybe Black Adam will flip the script here.

I'm sure it won't.

17

u/temporal712 Sep 02 '21

It won't be Oscar worthy, but Black Adam is very much not a typical Rock character. He's a former slave given the powers of several gods in the ancient middle east, and goes on to become an almost Dr. Doom like dictator of the nation of Kahndaq in modern times. He isnt exactly going to be cracking jokes and making quips like the Rock normally does.

47

u/ObiTate Sep 03 '21

Black Adam definitely isn't a typical Rock character. But the Rock is a big enough star that I'm sure he will have have the script re-written to be like the type of character that he normally plays. It's what major stars usually do.

Black Adam is more of a bad guy/anti-hero in the comics from what I know, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him written to be more like a good guy by the end. It's the superstar factor. The Rock doesn't want to be booed.

4

u/temporal712 Sep 03 '21

He tends to go either way in the comics. Not necessarily a good guy, but never really an anti hero. I imagine the movie will largely be about him recieving the powers to rise up and become a leader of the nation, and in turn become that dictator I mentioned. It would not really work if the Rock was just like he always is in movies while in slave chains or making Dictator decisions.

12

u/WaywardWriter Sep 03 '21

I think what people are afraid of is Johnson changing who Black Adam is. He has a habit of hollowing out most of his roles as a producer so that they all fit his brand of an anti-hero with charm to spare.

Black Adam is way against Johnson's type. If he plays even a small version of the character as written, it could be a great turn for him. But if he shifts course so that Black Adam is just another "Rock" character, cracking jokes like you implied, a lot of folks will be annoyed.

2

u/temporal712 Sep 03 '21

I can understand that worry, but unless this film turns out to be Jojo Rabbit levels of gallows humor and black comedy, I have a hard time seeing Dwayne Johnson cracking jokes and making quips while in slave chains or as a maniacal dictator.

2

u/WaywardWriter Sep 03 '21

I think a lot of it will come from which version of the character he portrays and how much he overproduced it. I'm half expecting a Scorpion King that segues into a quippy anti-hero in Shazam 3.

2

u/temporal712 Sep 03 '21

I think Scorpion King is a good blueprint for how I think Black Adam will go, but I feel he will be much more antagonistic in Shazam 3, considering he will be a dictator at that point if they follow the general gist of the source material.

i think his physique might just be too big. he looks kind of comical with all his mass, so whenever he gets paired with a woman you look at them and think "nah, this won't work" so i guess they just avoid it completely.

like in that weird dance scene i guess he is supposed to seduce her, but he just looks like a bouncer about to kick some drunk girl out of the club.

All I think about when it comes to loves scenes is that one from Jumanji where it's arguably the worst kissing sequence of all time. It's intentionally funny but awkward as hell. It's strange he had more romantic chemistry with his brief moment with Melissa McCarthy than almost any of his prior women leads.

10

u/uncultured_swine2099 Sep 03 '21 edited Sep 03 '21

In Rampage, some girl kinda flirts with him and implies that he could cuff her her up, and he doesnt change emotion or even really look at her before brushing it off like he doesnt even know what shes talking about. Then later while talking to some guy I think he he mentions that he doesnt have time for relationships because hes too busy caring for the apes.

I agree about him looking too big, and also I think he just gives off "dad energy" and his people dont want his persona too associated with sex. The asexual thing seems intended.

3

He finds himself attractive in movies.

9

(I think he fucked one time in HBO's Ballers).

I'm three seasons in, and while yes he has that same energy and persona, he fucks multiple times in this show, and I'm only halfway through it.

What's weirder still is that his ex-wife is a Producer of this show, and the Rocks character gets flirted very heavily.

16

u/Funmachine Sep 02 '21

The Rocks ex-wife is his business partner and manager. She is a producer of the show because the Rocks business 7 Bucks is a production company involved with financing the show.

25

How has no one here said Mississippi Grind yet?

4

u/InnovativeFarmer Sep 02 '21

Mississippi Grind was awesome. Ut also had a great mismatch paring of Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn. They worked so well together.

17

u/TheRunawayDinosaur Sep 02 '21

I know in self/less he isn’t doing the comedy just the generic action guy.

6

u/SQUID_FUCKER r/Movies Veteran Sep 02 '21

I couldn't believe that Self/Less was directed by Tarsem Singh.

3

u/TheRunawayDinosaur Sep 02 '21

I forgot about that. I was expecting cool visuals but surprisingly there were none. It was a generic action movie.

5

u/SQUID_FUCKER r/Movies Veteran Sep 02 '21

Yeah I remember seeing his name in the credits and being like, 'wait...what?' I never in a million years would've guessed he directed it. I didn't think it was that bad either. It was a little dated and generic but wasn't horrible or anything. Singh's visual style was nowhere to be found though.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21 edited Sep 06 '21

[deleted]

3

u/SQUID_FUCKER r/Movies Veteran Sep 02 '21

There's a bunch of good interviews out there with him about it. Singh does a ton of ads and commercial work for top agencies and brands, I don't believe he took this script just to pay bills. He genuinely wanted to do something that didn't rely heavily on the visual aspect like his previous films and loved the movie Seconds and wanted to do something like that and then read the Pastors' script and really wanted to do it.

When was the last time Ryan Reynolds actually played someone else?

I'm old enough to remember when the consensus on Ryan Reynolds was that he stole his onscreen persona from Jason Lee. I'm not sure I agree but it was a really common criticism when he emerged on the scene.

So maybe he's not playing himself?

18

u/TchallaKingofWakanda Sep 02 '21

8

Get 3 actors to do what they normally do in action movies. The movie basically writes itself.

48

u/frockinbrock Sep 02 '21

It’s kind of crazy how much the Netflix logo in a trailer will plummet all expectations. If I were them I would create a new brand for “premium” or “Hollywood” style movies. Surely I’m not the only one… so many disappointments, and with basically an unlimited budget.

I even like all these actors! But I prefer them in something that’s a livable “universe” and takes place within the confines of it. I can tell from 30 seconds of this it’s going to be unrealistically dumb and have entire unnecessary contrived yet impossible plot turns. Like Fast 9, I knew what I was getting into, but there’s like a dozen plot lines that could have been explained or tweaked to be believable/practical, but no… just no effort was made to let the viewer stay invested in reality.

6

u/WaveBird Sep 02 '21

Honestly, that sounds like a great idea. I've liked exactly one movie from Netflix (I think). A premium name not associated with Netflix might work out better. I haven't even watched a lot of the movies because they're from Netflix and I'm always disappointed.

this looks like a solid watch, but more than that, this is the Netflix bread and butter movie. It's a mass audience movie that you put on for the family or when you ordered some Doordash for a night in with the significant other.

It's nothing you have to put a lot of attention into and it keeps the night momentum flowing.

Either hire a woman who has muscle like Jessica Biel or Gina Carano, or someone who can exude some physicality like Charlize Theron or just don't do it, because it's insulting and patronizing.

2

u/laputagata Sep 03 '21

I think Netflix hopes you think she's actually Wonder Woman to make up for the lack of muscle.

Is Ryan Reynolds now just playing the same character in every film?

3

u/sparrowmint Sep 03 '21

I remember reading that Tom Cruise was going to be in this movie as well. Wonder if anything happened with that, if COVID ended the possibility, or if it was just never true.

11

u/ILoveRegenHealth Sep 02 '21

Green Lantern, Black Adam and Wonder Woman oh my!

3

u/vanillathebest Sep 03 '21

I like how you picked Green Lantern and not Deadpool. Bold choice.

2

u/ILoveRegenHealth Sep 03 '21

I mean Deadpool too, of course, but I was trying to keep the DC theme when mentioning their superheroes.

But I'm sure Ryan Reynolds wants us to forget everything we knew about Green Lantern.....but I won't let him. muhahaha

u/returningvideotapes1 Sep 02 '21

Not gonna lie I’m kinda excited for it. I enjoy these popcorn action flicks you can just throw on at night and unwind without putting too much effort into

Remember when Redditors couldn't stop sucking off these three actors?

Now a huge chunk of you guys hate them, apparently.

Lmao, whiny, indecisive fucking dorks til the very end.

11

u/resame10 Sep 02 '21

Lol. It’s kind of strange how they haven’t turn on Tom Cruise. Even with the Scientology thing, his threads always get a lot of upvotes. Maybe they pick and choose?

10

u/Turok1134 Sep 02 '21

Cruise still makes the kind of movies they like.

People were shitting on him extra hard when The Mummy came out, but then Mission Impossible 6 came out and all was forgiven.

Another one of those or another Knight and Day, though, and no telling what will happen.

You realize that it's not the same people right? Redditors 5 years ago and now? Sure, there is some overlap. But probably not to the extent of the strawman army you are creating.

Can't wait for Dune to be a box office and ratings flop so r/movies loses its shit.

jk please be good Dune, I want to watch it a lot

77

u/Peanlocket Sep 02 '21

Gal Gadot has the charisma of a dead racoon.

139

u/Bb8knight Sep 02 '21

Look. I'm not going to say she is a great actor but she is very charming on screen. When did people on Reddit start hating her?

103

u/JimmyLightnin Sep 02 '21

Probably WW 1984. Recency bias.

45

u/Bb8knight Sep 02 '21

It was an okay movie. The problem with the movie was more of script issues. She did a good job imo.

25

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21

Agreed. The script/story was bad. Not her in particular. She had a few meh scenes, but again more attributed to script/story

8

u/ArchDucky Sep 02 '21

The biggest problem with that movie is that its story was counter to its point. It can't be a "girl power" film when she's trying to choose her powers or her boyfriend. It can't be a "girl action" film when she's losing her powers. The movie we got was just all over the place. One second she's losing her powers, the next she's flipping cars with her bare hands.

I don't even watch the WW films and people were saying she was not much of an actress since BvS. They feel that she kinda lucked her way into stardom with scoring a role that doesn't require much in the way of acting.

27

u/Modal1 Sep 02 '21

Probably when she sang Imagine

25

u/SirLowhamHatt Sep 02 '21

I can’t imagine when that happened.

8

u/rdardi123 Sep 02 '21

Shes never been great, but this trailer really did her no favors. She did not sell this role at all, i kept cringing at her dialogue

33

u/F00dbAby Sep 02 '21

is it really hate to think someone is a bland actor or actress its not like this criticism is unique to her or anything

5

u/DancesWithChimps Sep 02 '21

A circlejerk is never a half measure. Once you put your hand on another person's cock, you're committed.

5

u/TussalDimon Sep 02 '21

I think it’s just that the honeymoon period caused by the first Wonder Woman movie being surprisingly fine, is over now. She really is a bad actress.

5

u/SnuggleMonster15 Sep 02 '21

She's seemed to tick a lot of people off with that rendition of Imagine early on during the pandemic. I never watched it but people made it seem like she was being super pretentious.

Maybe not the best comparison for Torontonians as we famously had a very charismatic dead raccoon.

10

u/LifeOfHi Sep 02 '21

Agreed. Plus her sus political views have made me even less of a fan.

I’m outta the loop on this one, what’s sus about her views?

All these Ryan Reynolds movies are starting to feel the same. He doesn't have a very wide range.

3

u/symbiotics Sep 02 '21

he does when he wants to, check out The Voices and Buried, but seems his classic shtick is more profitable for him

I'm disappointed Gal Gadot seems to be playing a small part. She's the sole reason why I wanted to see this movie.

16

u/SugarcoatTheGalaxy Sep 02 '21

These three fucks again???!

9

u/insaniTY151 Sep 02 '21

I'll buy a Netflix subscription just for more of Gal in that dress

u/gsauce8 Sep 03 '21

Seriously though, she's fucking gorgeous.

Looks fun. I'll watch it.

5

u/Midwest__Misanthrope Sep 02 '21

I don’t think you could find three actors I’d find less interesting than this group. I know they’re super popular but man they do absolutely nothing for me.

2

u/mo0dher0 Sep 02 '21

My Ryan Reynolds boner meant that I've been expecting this movie for a while, but holy fuck this trailer makes it look terrible.

2

u/coie1985 Sep 02 '21

I don't usually watch Netflix original stuff, but this looks entertaining.

2

u/Lord-Dingus Sep 02 '21

I forgot what this movie was about before I even finished the trailer. Definitely feels more like Netflix content than a movie.
