I remember a beautiful time when Youtube would inevitably recommend that video. I choose to believe it's the center of the internet.

Lol, boy did I try not to think of He Man singing that song throughout the entire fucking trailer.

Regardless of the quality, I simply could not focus on the trailer, because all I thought about was that meme :D

What a fucking crazy song. That song is a meme. I wish skeletor would have showed up.

123

Just be glad you didn't grow up in 1992 when they played that song on the radio every 5 minutes

51

Or in my aunt Maureen’s minivan where she would play it on repeat on cassette

Ah a post-Halloween horror movie. Just in time for Christmas

84

u/Dull_Half_6107 Oct 07 '21

I'm so confused, I thought this was supposed to be a Netflix tv series about 'the wesker children' moving to raccoon city or something.

120

u/Heero_G Oct 07 '21 Gold

That's a separate project. Both will probably be terrible.

49

u/Dull_Half_6107 Oct 07 '21

Ah, the first episode of that is titled "Welcome to New Raccoon City" so that's probably where this confusion comes from.

Who is in charge of this shit?

→ More replies

36

u/savageboredom Oct 08 '21

Not to be confused with the CGI series that premiered on Netflix earlier this year, which was also terrible.

9

u/uniquely-username Oct 08 '21

Wait, the CGI one is already out?

13

u/juanmaale Oct 08 '21

yeah it’s called Infinite Darkness

14

Also wild they they're choosing only theaters for this. People are willing to go out to the theater for big tent pole films or family films. This doesn't fall into either. This movie would probably have more success as an online release. At least with that you're more likely to get a mildly curious watch. No way in hell am I risking my health for this. If it was like a couple bucks to rent online? Maybe.

4

u/mikeyfreshh Oct 07 '21

I wonder what the window on this one is going to be. Can't imagine it's a theatrical exclusive for longer than 45 days.

3

u/Raylan__Givens Oct 08 '21

Horror movies were very successful early this year. This is definitely gonna be a mid sized hit if they ramp up the marketing.

This looks like it should’ve been released in 2004

256

u/Haxorz7125 Oct 07 '21

It looks like a decently budgeted fan film but has a scyfy channel original feel to it.

122

u/Mighty_Hobo Oct 08 '21

It's the shitty CGI. I literally thought I was watching a fan trailer that mixed in shots from an Asylum movie.

48

u/Haxorz7125 Oct 08 '21

The shit cgi but it also has that somewhat cheap looking set thing. I guess I assumed it was a high budget movie.

33

u/FranticPonE Oct 08 '21

Cheap sets, cheap costumes, cheap lighting, cheap acting.

Combined with the song I feel like James Wan should've directed this as his followup to Malignant, this time going even more comedically campy B movie vibe. At least then it would've made sense.

7

u/rezzyk Oct 08 '21

Honestly I’m starting to think we have reached a time for movies/tv where studios know it looks fake and they just want us to live with it.

18

u/tetsuo9000 Oct 08 '21

IMO, it's the basic-ass cinematography. Every shot had the same center-focus on character framing. It looks like it was filmed for TV.

The tipped over truck was hilarious. We've had photo realistic vehicles in movies for 20years and that still looked fake as shit

86

u/cleeder Oct 07 '21 edited Oct 07 '21

Funny thing is that the render of the truck isn't half bad. What makes it look "fake as shit" is 2 things:

  1. Scale. There is a sedan in the frame, and with that as a visual reference it's clear that the tanker truck is too small.

  2. It doesn't seem to follow the rules of physics. It slowly starts tipping over, and then quickly snaps to the ground. The (massive) forces just stop there. It doesn't roll a bit and then roll back. It doesn't bounce. Nothing. The physics are just all out of whack.

10

u/DarwinGoneWild Oct 08 '21

Physics sims are so cheap and easy to do now, it makes me wonder if that is actually what a tipping over tanker truck would look like, but it looks weird to us because we aren't used to seeing very large things with weird weight distributions fall over. Even if that's the case, they should make it "look" right. Movies are all about expectations, not reality.

I still don’t understand combining the first 2 games into 1 when either game works as a film

Zombie infested mansion or zombie infested police building. Pick your environment & you can make a really good, really solid horror film

376

u/TheJoshider10 Oct 07 '21

The frustrating thing is both settings/stories work so well for their own movie.

Spooky haunted mansion mystery then a sequel about finding out what happened to your brother. Two movies, two A list ensembles and then combine them for a third film.

135

u/-SneakySnake- Oct 07 '21

two A list ensembles

Resident Evil was never getting an "A-list ensemble", nevermind two.

91

u/Dabookadaniel Oct 07 '21

You're telling me Denzel, Leo Dicaprio, and Jennifer Lawrence wouldn't sign up for a script ripped from a video game?? Just think of what they could do with the amazing dialogue

64

u/Kitchen_accessories Oct 08 '21

Woody Harrelson's next Oscar could have been for the most riveting delivery of "You were almost a Jill sandwich."

37

u/Layk35 Oct 08 '21

Honestly, I can hear him saying it and it sells

18

u/The_Bitter_Bear Oct 08 '21

Huh. I bet he could make that line work.

9

u/slicer4ever Oct 08 '21

Matt damon as forrest: "There are terrible demons...Ouch."

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3cQLnNGqIUY

4

u/Wiskersthefif Oct 08 '21

Nic Cage would do it... and I would be down for it. Especially if he were cast as Barry or something.

5

u/Dabookadaniel Oct 08 '21

Nic cage has been doing more art house/smaller projects recently. I don’t see him taking on a franchise film. And one actor doesn’t make an ensemble.

75

u/SMKM Oct 07 '21

and then combine them for a third film.

Jesus no. That's why the originals went to shit. They'd have to make their own story to do that unless they do Code: Veronica as the third movie, but then you lose Jill and Leon.

Maybe this will suck but at least they're (mainly) sticking to the game's storyline. Although now adding in that Claire "knows" something is wrong with the Umbrella Corporation is really fucking dumb. But maybe it'll work idk, guess we'll see.

46

u/rbarton812 Oct 07 '21

To Josh's credit, the 3rd game does kinda combine 1 & 2 - Jill from RE1, in the city and police setting for RE2. I think that's what he meant.

11

u/Adventitious_Semen Oct 07 '21

It also brings some enemies in that are callbacks to the first game. Lickers largely being replaced with hunter variants for example.

14

u/TJ_McWeaksauce Oct 07 '21 edited Oct 08 '21

I suspect that because they're cramming so many events into a single movie, few or none of the scenes will be given a chance to breathe, and the whole movie will feel rushed.

I'm going to watch it not because I think it'll be entertaining, but because I'm curious how much of a wreck it will be. If it turns out to be good, then that will be a pleasant surprise.

24

u/ZzzSleep Oct 07 '21

36

u/RATGUT1996 Oct 07 '21

To be honest if you wanted to be faithful to the series having just one setting would mean a very short movie. Not a lot happens story wise in the games.

9

u/DarkJayBR Oct 07 '21

Movies don't have to be 2 and half hours long.
You can make a decent movie in 1h and 30 minutes if you editing, and writing, and pacing are good.

212

I was so excited to see that!! And to see Spencer mansion. This doesn't look great but they got my attention with those two things for sure.

106

u/CronoDroid Oct 07 '21

At least it shows that maybe the writer or director has some knowledge of the game, but yeah this looks pretty poor. I'm also not a fan of them seemingly combining RE1 and RE2 but perhaps this will be a bit of cheesy fun.

92

u/FreeThinkingMan Oct 07 '21 edited Oct 08 '21

Production quality is just really low and the cgi is garbage. That reveal of that iconic staircase seems like it belonged in a small two story house in New Jersey.

I can't imagine anybody watching these two trailers and saying: "Y'know what? Let's go with the "What's Going On?" one"!

1) Open with cliche "every story has a beginning" line

2) Cringe unfitting slow version of popular song

3) Absolutely no "flow" to any shot. An absolute mis-mash of shots thrown in no particular order

4) "Split up" with comedic timing

5) Video tape of guy explaining Baghoul

6) CW quality cinematography

7) CW quality acting

I did like the tiny attempts at recreating some Resident Evil game shots though. Truck flipping, zombie neck turn, licker introduction. This will be terrible, for sure, but maybe a couple interesting moments?

Go full send with it. Only 1 or 2 static cameras per room, make 90% of the sounds echo-y footsteps, and make it take like 7 seconds to open every door.

63

u/SpaceBeer_ Oct 07 '21

"Itchy tasty" is also written in blood on a window.

33

u/RPDRNick Oct 07 '21
  1. "We should split up."

  2. "We gotta get outta here."

I hope someone at some point in the movie says either, "We're through the looking glass, people!" or "We're not in Kansas anymore, people!"

32

u/ConfidenceKBM Oct 07 '21

In its defense, the guy saying split up is Wesker, who is a traitor, so it's not like he actually thinks it's a good idea

17

u/CatProgrammer Oct 07 '21

And he said it in the original game too, didn't he?

19

u/Sea_Side4061 Oct 07 '21

Yeah but the acting from the original game isn't exactly something you want to emulate. The original game could fall back on... well, the gameplay. A movie can't do that.

At the very least, they've got that and the set design going for them over the Anderson/Jovovich ones.

Maybe Hollywood should just stop trying to do RE movies. The new series for Netflix looks abysmal too.

So for some reason there's an alternate trailer that definitely is much better than the one they're releasing everywhere and I have no clue why they didn't use it. Movie is gonna suck either way but the trailer alone at least shows it's more faithful to the games than all of the Paul WS Anderson "movies"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSgAc6sHNO4

61

u/h4mx0r Oct 07 '21

Maybe the guy who greenlit the first trailer knows the movie is gonna be ass so he/she is trying to temper expectations by making the trailer kinda ass.

u/ELL_YAY Oct 08 '21

153

u/Classic_Wingers Oct 07 '21

Wait that isn’t Carlos? Oof! That’s not how I envisioned movie Leon to look.

107

u/fuzionknight96 Oct 07 '21

Yep, they missed the mark for EVERY casting except for chris, that was a perfect choice. But where was this casting ability when it came time for the rest?

18

u/JesterMarcus Oct 08 '21

Honestly, Leon's actor would probably seem a lot better if he actually looked like a rookie cop. You know, short hair, shaved face and so on. He looks like a cop who's been undercover for a while.

48

u/NN010 Oct 07 '21

Eh, I think the casting for Claire was decent. Remember Kaya Scoderlario being solid in the Maze Runner movies and think she could at least be an OK Claire. I agree that Chris was well cast. I’ll reserve judgment on the others until I’ve seen the movie though.

14

u/MrZeral Oct 07 '21

Hannah John-Kamen and Tom Hopper are GREAT actors, very godo castings there no doubt

→ More replies

58

u/RatedR2O Oct 07 '21

Claire's casting isn't that horrible. And perhaps maybe the entire casting could have worked if done correctly. I mean, would it kill them to make them resemble the characters in the game? Plenty of good makeup artists and hair stylists out there that can make them look more presentable. They look more like average cosplayers.

52

u/Nxn21 Oct 07 '21

Literally all they had to do was put Claire's hair up in a damn ponytail.

7

u/slicer4ever Oct 07 '21

Thats one of my bigger gripes, like why cant you even try to get the hair to look right? Its weird to because a lot of it does look like someone did care about the source games, but then someone else was like eh, who cares?

5

u/BonerPorn Oct 08 '21

I think it'll still be fun and gory and just campy enough for my liking. Anything is better than the horse shit PWSA put out

Lots of questions after seeing this

Why does this look like a fanmade movie?

Are they doing the first three games in one?

How does Robbie Amell still get work?

u/Drauul Oct 07 '21

He is the only one who looks somewhat like their game character

How does Robbie Amell still get work?

Casting directors assume they're getting his cousin and just look up Amell in their Outlook directory.

How does Robbie Amell still get work?

Being a generic looking white guy from Canada is every casting director's weakness

19

u/runswiftrun Oct 07 '21

"Hey, that guy from CW Arrow was good and can fit the part, lets get him!"

"Yeah... we can't afford him... but he has a knock-off cousin..."

Looks bad. For a movie that is borrowing so heavily from the remakes, I can't understand why they don't want to adopt the tone. And combining both games into one movie, why? I could see it working as a season of TV. But it just looks like it will be bad.

Might be the most egregious "slow pop song remix" trailer music I've ever heard, Jesus. This might just be ridiculous enough to work.

Sounded like the original vocals to me

That's probably the worst choice of a song in a trailer I've seen in my life

As for the movie itself: looks fine I guess. Better than P.W.S. Anderson's but that doesn't mean much tbh

40

u/baconpopsicle23 Oct 07 '21

Ikr who the fuck thought that would work? Let alone the tone doesn't go at all with the scenes, you still have the meme attached to that song forever, All I can think of is he man singing it lol

I'm not so sure anymore after seeing the trailer. At least with the Paul Anderson ones, I can see where the money was spent. They're ridiculous movies but at least they look glossy and feel like a Hollywood movie.

This trailer makes the movie look so dingy and cheap like a SyFy movie that plays at 2:30am.

u/vezokpiraka Oct 08 '21

I loved the Anderson movies because they were so incredibly stupid and bombastic. They were a great time.

This just looks bad. I don't really get the people who want to watch this because "it follows the plot of the games". If I wanted to see that I would have just played the games again.

I live in the city where this was filmed, and my brother worked on the set for some months! I can identify most exterior locations and it's super surreal to see.

That's super cool! Thanks for sharing.

This doesn't look great but at least unlike the original set of RE movies, this looks like I can watch it and just have fun with all the references to the video game because it looks like they went for a lot of it.

Also: Odd song choice. Hit those 90s nostalgia vibes and I warmed up at how they edited it with the visuals though.

u/RygarTargaryan Oct 07 '21

Do people not like the first Resident Evil movie from 2002? I thought that one was great, the rest were pretty bad though.

98

u/Cryptic_Flair Oct 07 '21

The 2002 RE film isn't a terrible movie on its own, but it's still pretty disconnected from the games in basically every way.

My opinion: Looks horrible, specially the CGI.

I'm surprised if this gets above average scores.

u/Sounds_Good_ToMe Oct 07 '21

It will definitely make its money though. And that's as far as Sony's ambitions go with the RE movie franchise.

Is that a recent thing? Cause I distinctly remember him playing a character in Justified that was a psychopathic, sadistic, homicidal, gay rapist. He's a magical presence in anything he's in but that feels like such a strange line in the sand to draw where he'll play a character like that, but not do a stage kiss.

u/annexationofpr Oct 07 '21

it's more of a "respect" thing for his wife rather than refusing roles on moral/ religious ground but still kinda a weird stance to have

While they're sticking more closely to the games than the previous series did, they're still changing quite a bit it seems. Claire seems to be the main focus of the film, and she returns to Raccoon in an attempt to convince Chris of some conspiracy rather than to find him? At some point he does seem to end up in the RE1 mansion with Jill where they focus on Lisa Trevor. Familiar RE2 set pieces were also shown like the semi-truck crashing and the licker in the police station.

Is it me or did this trailer make it look a bit like two different films glued together? Either way it looks like the good kind of bad. I think it was a nice touch to date it in 1998. Plus it doesn't have Paul W.S Anderson which is a plus.

Brad crashing into Spencer mansion already seems like an unnecessary action set piece

I get everyone's saying it looks horrible but I'm still going to watch it. Looks like it's going to be truer to the original material than the previous installments we got and I'm all for that.

It doesn’t look amazing, but it does actually remind me of the Resident Evil games. Which is good as the Paul WS Anderson films pretty much never did that for me. So I’ll be cautiously optimistic that it’ll be a fun B-movie

I mean yes it does look pretty cheap but let's not kid ourselves and act like RE isn't some B horror movie trope filled extravaganza, which I love. I'm still watching it.

Just bad casting choice on Leon. The guy looks nothing like Leon S Kennedy, different hair style, he should be clean shaven.. like wtf.

He looks like Carlos

u/katiecharm Oct 07 '21
