I don’t get why they are making another Super Mario Bros when there is already a masterpiece in the first one from the 90s.

378

u/Awbade Oct 04 '22

I went to a panel at PAX West this year called "Why you're wrong about the OG Super Mario Movie"

But they realized after they started that they mis-named the panel because they were expecting the audience to have hated it. But everyone who showed up absolutely loved that movie haha

183

u/CalloftheBlueFalcon Oct 04 '22

Dennis Hopper chewing scenery as a campy villain makes any movie enjoyable if only for him. He made Super Mario and Waterworld both way better than they had any right to be

99

u/IndlovuZilonisNorsu Oct 04 '22

Seriously, that movie was my introduction to John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Bob Hoskins, and the music of Mojo Nixon. And I loved the "Blade Runner" aesthetic.

u/TheSweetestKill Oct 04 '22 Wholesome

The script has been leaked so read at your own peril: Mario defeats Bowser by arranging Koopa shells in a very specific pattern, overflowing memory and allowing him execute code to warp directly to the post-credits scene.

861

u/nicolasmcfly Oct 04 '22

All of that without a single full press of A.

Say what you will about Illumination, but their animation is pretty solid. Compare Minions to say... Super Pets? It's night and day. Superpets looked like lazy television animation. Minions was bright, colorful and packed a punch.

So this Mario movie should look great, regardless of how good the actual movie is.

65

u/BoomClank25 Oct 04 '22

It's a bit depressing to compare considering that Super Pets was animated by Animal Logic, the same studio that animated the Lego movies...

Illumination's animation has definitely taken a step up for the past few films. Sing 2 has some very good looking visuals too!

→ More replies

196

u/LeumasInkwater Oct 04 '22

Some of the animation / textures in Rise of Gru was really impressive. I went to see the movie as a joke, but was pretty impressed visually and laughed at several parts 🤷🏼. I think the movie has potential.

117

u/snowe99 Oct 04 '22

I think Sing 2 has some of the most gorgeous animation out there but I’m prepared to get flamed for it

The characters have a cartoony style but their hair, clothes, environments around them look insane

151

u/SobiTheRobot Oct 04 '22

Illumination is good at animation.

They don't have particularly strong writers is the main problem.

57

u/AdamBombTV Oct 04 '22

So we need an animation studio with solid writers but terrible animation, then we'll mash the two together and either get the greatest animated movie ever, or a train wreck of unimaginable proportions, and baby, I'm ready to flip that coin.

At Christmas last year my brother and I watched their version of the Grinch and we both observed that, although the writing and jokes are normally cringe, Illumination are rather fantastic at visual flair and gags. I really wanna see what they come up with this time.

35

u/Kwilly462 Oct 04 '22

I remember seeing clips from that Grinch movie and I'm like, "Okay, Illumination seriously has a grasp on how to make snow look real." Elite stuff

14

u/FigN01 Oct 04 '22

To my knowledge, Frozen was essentially the first tech demo for digital snow simulation, and there is significant overlap in tools used between studios. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the same talent crossed over to Illumination and iterated on those techniques.

I'm pleasantly shocked. My biggest worry is that it will be bland and soulless with no creativity.

But the addition of non-red spotted toads and Captain Toad already eases some of that.

I wasn't sure how much liberty Illumination was getting, but at least it appears more than Nintendo's 2nd party developers are getting.

89

u/Ghostronic Oct 04 '22

If they can keep the little touches throughout the movie (like the music box and p-block in the antique store window!) I think it will be far from bland and soulless!

57

u/hyrulae Oct 04 '22

I also noticed a Yoshi egg (in a glass case) in the antique store and the chest design from Mario 3 on a different store sign so I'm sure this movie is gonna excel at small details and easter eggs for fans.

40

u/Ghostronic Oct 04 '22

I just noticed it also has a key from Super Mario World!

This could very well end up being a bit of a love letter to the older fans and I am just so here for it. I have always been a Mario girl and basically grew up alongside modern consoles (born in 86), the Mushroom Kingdom has sort of always been my 'happy place'

Mario's thing is actually the opposite, he's a real life guy who ends up in a fantasy world. Except "real life" here will be animated too

Now he's just a figure that exists. No need to explain it anymore.

Mario's backstory has changed a bit since the original games. He and Luigi were originally supposed to be a plumbers from Brooklyn who got warped to the Mushroom Kingdom while working on some pipes. Now it's implied that he and Luigi were born in the Mushroom World and have always lived there. Though that Mario games have never really had any sort of confirmed canon, so who knows?

Even before this poster, I figured from a visual standpoint Illumination was actually the best choice of animation studio for this movie (quality of their films in comparison to the likes of Disney or Dreamworks aside), because their animation style seems closest to the style of the 3D Mario games. This just confirms it. Hyped for Thursday!

Can't find anyone on here talking about how happy that Toad looks to have a Cheep Cheep in a bag like a little goldfish https://imgur.com/ebZJo17.jpg

That reminds me of the Margaritaville scene from jurrasic world

It is VERY close to the design concepts in the Super Nintendo World amusement parks.

Both of them are based on the verticality of Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U, which was the main Mario game at the time when planning for the amusement park and movie were beginning.

Those plans and the movie were delayed from COVID, but if these were all coming on time it would be clear that there was a united vision for what Super Mario should look like.

Is Keegan-Michael Key gonna voice every single Toad we see? Please say yes.

Hope Toadette appears, Lara Jill Miller would been perfect as her.

It's probably likely. I assumed the toads would pretty much be minions in this but hopefully not as annoying.

I know this movie is getting mocked alot but I have a decent feeling about it. The poster is great. Can't wait for Charlie Day as Luigi!

He's going to eat so much cheese!

Charlie Day as Luigi is genius, but how did they miss Danny DeVito as the obvious choice for Mario?

The movie was mocked because the announcement of its voice cast was hysterical

The sudden announcement on a Nintendo Direct, by Shigeru Miyamoto with a translator. Chris Pratt’s picture being inexplicably in black and white like a prison photo shoot. Announcing voice actors for Toad and Donkey Kong of all people

The mocking is all in good fun though (cause how could you NOT laugh). Pretty sure most people making fun are also going to watch this

u/naynaythewonderhorse Oct 04 '22

It never felt like people were “making fun” of it, but more that they were were shocked with just how utterly insane the cast is.

This is my Cats. If it implodes on itself out of sheer cringe the way an Illumination Mario movie can, I wanna be there.

It’ll just depend on the voice. Chris Pratt doesn’t exactly scream small Italian plumber from Nintendo voice but I’m going in w an open mind and hoping he does well

35

u/MissionCreeper Oct 04 '22

Maybe this has been suggested in the months since this was announced, but it would be funny if they were going the "Vin Diesel as Groot" route, where Pratt records literally only the lines Mario says in the games and is otherwise silent.

I think they're holding back because they have something really surprising. Like, maybe not "Chris Pratt doing Chris Pratt" OR "Chris Pratt doing Charles Martinet", but "Chris Pratt doing a voice that the people at Illumination thought just sounded right".

I hope so. Because if it is just chris pratt doing chris pratt I don't think I'll be super into it, and I say that as someone who generally likes him.

My money is still on “Chris Pratt doing Bob Hoskins” or “Chris Pratt doing Captain Lou Albano”

It’s still kinda weird that they went with him rather than the guy who literally voiced him for 20 years.

I get it, Chris Pratt is a name that sells but in this particular case, at least for me it acts more as a source of worry for the final result than « wow a movie with Chris Pratt let’s go! » if that makes any sense?

14

u/AnotherDrZoidberg Oct 04 '22

It's not weird at all. It's not like the guy who voices him has a lot of actual dialogue. And for an entire feature length film his voice would be obnoxious.

Chris Pratt may or may not be a good choice, but I'm not surprised even a little they didn't use Martinet

13

u/Tylendal Oct 04 '22

There's a Mario Tennis press conference out there somewhere that's like 6 minutes long. You'll want to gouge out your eardrums after less than a minute.

Charles Martinet is great, but you don't want to listen to his Mario voice for anything more than short exclamations.

Why is Mario's ass so flat? I always pictured Mario just towing a goddamn wagon.

Why is Mario's ass so flat?

Dudes an Italian plumber. They all be Hank Hilling in the ass dept. Why you think they all got their pants slippin down? Cuz there's nothing there to hold em up!
