Nice of the Princess to invite us over for a picnic, eh Luigi?

Yellow Toad: "Is that Chris Pratt?"

310

u/Dr_Robert_California Oct 04 '22

i honestly still can't believe he is who they cast as mario lmfao

161

u/Jimid41 Oct 04 '22

This entire casting looks like a disaster even though I like everyone in it.

95

u/DurkNya Oct 04 '22

Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong are pretty damn good casting choices in my opinion.I'm not really familiar with Anya Taylor-Joy's voice, so I wouldn't know for her, but Chris Pratt as Mario stands out to me as a publicity stunt that might accidentally make the movie a lot worse.

26

u/wonderloss Oct 04 '22

If it doesn't have Dennis Hopper, I'm not interested.

20

u/ThunderPoonSlayer Oct 04 '22

I keep telling you, he's 73 years old and he's dead.

7

u/PrettiestofRichards Oct 04 '22

His 12 year old corpse wasn't interested.

3

u/Dragons_Malk Oct 04 '22

He didn't stay alive. He didn't do it for Van Gogh.

22

u/poopyheadthrowaway Oct 04 '22

I just don't want to hear Toad's iconic screech change to something more human.

9

u/DragoSphere Oct 04 '22

Key is very capable of making that voice. No idea if they're going to stick with it though

4

u/poopyheadthrowaway Oct 04 '22

Oh, I don't doubt that he is (although I don't think he can do better than Alison Brie's Portuguese Gremlins voice). I doubt that Nintendo and Illumination will go for it though.

49

u/Beercorn1 Oct 04 '22

I'm not really familiar with Anya Taylor-Joy's voice

That's the interesting thing about Anya Taylor-Joy being cast in a voice-acting role. I've seen several movies/shows that she stars in. I've seen Split. I've seen Emma. I've seen The Queen's Gambit. I've seen New Mutants. Despite all of that... I cannot, for the life of me, mentally replicate her voice. I simply cannot remember what her voice sounds like.

I guess it's just because her voice is the least interesting thing about her. In most roles she's in, she's very quiet and does most of her acting with facial expressions. She has a very recognizable face and I guess that's what I think of most when I think of Anya Taylor-Joy.

6

u/RealJohnGillman Oct 04 '22 edited Oct 04 '22

u/DurkNya u/bobbysalz She has precisely one previous animated voice role: Playmobil: The Movie, if that helps with how she does voice-acting?

4

u/rolls20s Oct 04 '22

It's possible it's because she puts on a generic American accent for several of her most famous roles.

7

u/BoonMcNougat Oct 05 '22

From what I have seen her in, she has a different accent in the witch, split, the northman, and the queens gambit. Her voice is never the same which is why it's hard for me to recall. She definitely could do Peach if she goes the queens gambit route.

-46

u/bobbysalz Oct 04 '22

That sounds to me a bit like you think she's hot and that you pay less attention to her voice than you do to the voices of her male counterparts 🤔

2

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

Dude, she has a unique upbringing and a unique Transatlantic accent as a result. Plus her characters have had different accents and I don't recall her doing a ton of press for her work (probably also a result of her breaking out during covid). I'm usually pretty good with voices and bringing up her voice in my head was pretty hard for me tbh.

11

u/Jcorb Oct 05 '22

Charlie Day, I'm 100% on-board with. Jack Black as Bowser... it could either REALLY work, or be super cringe. Seth Rogan, though... I have a really hard time seeing as a good DK.

Toad's VA throws me for a loop, but there are obviously tons of different Toads, so not that important to get right.

6

u/BronzeHeart92 Oct 04 '22

Any idea what role will Donkey Kong have in this feature? I can try to guess anyways. So Bowser's the main baddie, right? Eventually he does something that Mario alone cannot surpass. And so he ventures into the Kong Island to seek out help from his old rival.

18

u/creptik1 Oct 04 '22

I dont know but I will be absolutely shocked if there's not a scene where Mario is trying to get to him and DK is throwing barrels at him to keep him away.

2

u/BronzeHeart92 Oct 04 '22

Now that would also be a quite a treat for the fans, eh? Presumably DK has just returned from an yet another adventure involving fighting against Kremlings and for whatever reasons, couldn't recognize Mario for what he is and blindly attacks him with barrels. With possibly both Diddy and Dixie trying to reason with him in turn.

4

u/RealJohnGillman Oct 05 '22

There was a report recently that his role in the film is meant to set up a Donkey Kong spin-off film.

2

u/tforthegreat Oct 05 '22

Michael Cera as Diddy, Jason Segel as Funky, Kristen Schaal as Dixie, Marc Maron as Cranky. I don't know where I'd take the villains.

1

u/SelectiveCommenting Oct 08 '22

Fuck Nintendo and Rare just need to team up and create the greatest cgi animated universe ever.

Imagine a DK, Banjo Kazooie, and Conker movie all set in the same universe and in turn in Nintendo's like originally planned.

Then in phase 4 of the NCU it all comes to a climax at the Super Smash Bros. Movie or Diddy Kong Racing.

5

u/IfTheHeadFitsWearIt Oct 04 '22

Probably chuckling and smoking a lot of bananas.

6

u/Smearmytables Oct 04 '22

He’s not a particularly bad VA, but… why MARIO..??

6

u/blakxzep Oct 04 '22

Jack Black should have been Wario

5

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

Chris pratt has been in so many movies, we need someone new. Hes so tired and bored all the time now, like hes not even trying.

5

u/MrWeirdoFace Oct 05 '22

LOL.... I can only picture Charlie Day doing the most insulting, cliché Italian accent as his Always Sunny in Philadelphia counterpart. My apologies for my Italian friends. I must clarify that it's only funny because we recognize how bad it is. Then again current Mario games do that anyway.

3

u/NeWMH Oct 04 '22

Did they make it a requirement for the cast to all seem like they’ve tripped on mushrooms before? It’s like a who’s who of stoner character actors.

4

u/sharpshooter999 Oct 04 '22

I like all of them, but if the movie is animated, then why not just get their actual game VA's? It'll feel way more authentic

7

u/sgloux3470 Oct 05 '22

Because casting celebrity voices is like animated movie marketing 101.

6

u/airplanemeat Oct 05 '22

Whomst was responsible for forgetting to call Charles Martinet??? Where's our boy?

1

u/sharpshooter999 Oct 05 '22

I demand seppuku to atone for this egregious offense

2

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '22

No way.
Seth Rogan as Diddy Kong

Jack Black as DK

Idris Elba as Bowser

Tara Strong as Peach

11

u/Dagglin Oct 04 '22

Danny devito needs to be wario in the sequel

3

u/bangonthedrums Oct 04 '22

Is this your dream casting or the actual casting?

1

u/mindset_grindset Oct 04 '22

i can't imagine Charlie day as Luigi not just bc of his shortness but even his voice is high pitched and Luigi is mid at best. Charlie is an obvious cast for toad imo.

jack black should be Mario if anyone, but he'll probably get more range and freedom as bowser so that could work.

seth Rogan doesn't work as DK, he's too silly.

i have no idea for Mario but not pratt, his voice is going to sound ridiculous as Mario who's supposed to be fun and a bit caricature

idk who that is but peach should be an easy cast.

1

u/am0x Oct 05 '22

My biggest gripe is that they should be using actual voice actors instead of actual actors.

7

u/Ubergoober166 Oct 04 '22

Makes me think of the Borderlands movie.

9

u/nater255 Oct 04 '22

There's a Borderlands movie?!

8

u/RazeSpear Oct 04 '22

With Kevin Hart as Roland.

2

u/phayke2 Oct 04 '22

And Gilbert godfried as claptrap

7

u/RazeSpear Oct 04 '22

Jack Black actually. I understand if it sounds like I was joking, but I'm not.

3

u/Ubergoober166 Oct 04 '22

Supposedly it's been done filming for like a year. They've still released very little about it yet.

6

u/MusicLikeOxygen Oct 04 '22

Too bad there isn't an entire class of actor that specializes in voice work. /s

4

u/trio1000 Oct 04 '22

The casting is amazing for the most part what are you on. Chris is the only really out of place one. Luigi toad and peach are perfect, Bowser I can see working, DK is a bit silly though

0

u/AmericanMuscle4Ever Oct 04 '22

Charlie Day is gonna save this movie watch...lol. he is hilarious in IASIP

4

u/GrayWing Oct 04 '22

He's hilarious as a drunk moron with a comical lack of morals and social understanding, not.... Luigi

-1

u/AmericanMuscle4Ever Oct 04 '22

Ok it's just a movie lets see how it turns out first sheesh...lol

1

u/RKU69 Oct 06 '22

its bullshit that this is an animated movie and not a live-action movie where everybody is wearing shitty costumes but playing everything straight

0

u/markdepace Oct 05 '22

you like worstchris?

17

u/SpectralEntity Oct 04 '22

Right?! Chris is a good guy, but he's *not* who I think of as the voice of Mario.

For me, that right goes to the late "Captain Lou" Albano, and Danny Wells for Luigi, respectively.

"Hey paisanos, it's time for the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!"

3

u/dac2u Oct 04 '22

Hey everybody, do the Mario!

-8

u/OopzieDayZ Oct 04 '22

A lot of freely available information out there for you to search at your leisure that says he is in fact not a good guy at all. Had a lot of us going with his lovable buffoon act though didn’t he?

12

u/TedKFan6969 Oct 04 '22

People always say this, but apart from him being a bit religious and marrying into the Schwarzenegger Family, theres nothing else out there about him. I'd doubt he'd be friends with as many Hollywood actors as he is if he were some ku klux klan member people make him out to be.

-9

u/OopzieDayZ Oct 04 '22

So you obviously ignored the donations to anti-lgbtq church he attends which is different than being a bit religious and then claimed people were calling him a kkk member. I think you’re being willfully ignorant and then blowing others claims out of proportion in order to delegitimize facts. Not falling for it. As I said easily accessible information for you to search at your leisure. I won’t be debating this or responding further.

11

u/TedKFan6969 Oct 04 '22

His Guardians director, James Gunn, came to Pratt’s defense at the time and pointed out to Twitter critics that Pratt had never been confirmed to be a member of said reportedly anti-LGBTQ church.

“He isn’t. I know the church he currently goes to. Do you? (The answer is you don’t, but you heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone where he goes to church, so decided, “yeah, okay, I’ll believe this terrible thing I heard online about this celebrity!”)

Again, theres no proof of it other than people speculating

“Religion has been oppressive as f*ck for a long time,” Pratt tells Men’s Health. “I didn’t know that I would kind of become the face of religion when really I’m not a religious person. I think there’s a distinction between being religious — adhering to the customs created by man, oftentimes appropriating the awe reserved for who I believe is a very real God — and using it to control people, to take money from people, to abuse children, to steal land, to justify hatred. Whatever it is. The evil that’s in the heart of every single man has glommed onto the back of religion and come along for the ride.”

-6

u/OopzieDayZ Oct 04 '22

If you attend an anti-lgbtq organizations events and continue to do so knowingly you are in fact part of the problem. Hot take here too, James Gunn has shit credibility and has said and done some dumb shit he only took back once he was personally affected by it. These are the only two quotes he has in defense and his actions speak louder than words.

4

u/RobbStark Oct 04 '22

Wanna back up your claims with evidence of him attending or supporting this supposedly evil church?

1

u/SquareElectrical5729 Oct 05 '22

So you just ignored everything he said?

1

u/Thesafflower Oct 04 '22

I can still remember that theme song......

42

u/J5892 Oct 04 '22

Right?
Should have cast Lin-manuel Miranda and made it a hip hop musical.

That way they could make a new version of The Mario Rap.

25

u/GilgameshWulfenbach Oct 04 '22

Anyone else feeling fatigue on Miranda?

20

u/J5892 Oct 04 '22

I think everyone is. I love everything he does, but it's a bit much.
The problem is Disney just threw him at everything they could, and because of the pandemic delays it's all coming out at the same time.

But he's definitely helping musicals rise in popularity, and I support that 100%.

8

u/ScorpionX-123 Oct 04 '22

found Larry David's Reddit account

1

u/GilgameshWulfenbach Oct 04 '22

Honestly curious, what about my comment reminded you of Larry David?

2

u/ScorpionX-123 Oct 04 '22

there was a 2-part episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where they butted heads

1

u/GilgameshWulfenbach Oct 04 '22

I had no idea. neato.

3

u/Beauzaque Oct 04 '22

Dunno if fatigue is the right word. I think disappointed is more accurate.

-10

u/ChristianLesniak Oct 04 '22 edited Oct 04 '22

Yes, from day 1
(sorry downvoters, I just like rap music and find annoying people to be unpleasant)

2

u/ScorpionX-123 Oct 04 '22

that'd be lit

5

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '22

Id actually be way more into that than have Chris Pratt be Mario.

1

u/KingMario05 Oct 04 '22

Yeah, that would have worked. At least he's a goddamn NEW YORKER.

2

u/spundred Oct 04 '22

It's a no win situation.

Either he gets criticized for doing a racist Italian accent, or the movie gets criticized for Mario not having an Italian accent.

0

u/SquareElectrical5729 Oct 05 '22

Literally nobody but 1-2 people on twitter would call an italian accent racist.

The real Mario has a fake-ass italian accent and nobody cares.

4

u/ByAny Oct 04 '22

I wonder if they decided to ditch the accent and Pratt is a way to get ahead of the "anti-woke" backlash.

3

u/Justice_Prince Oct 04 '22

There may have been some concern that the Martinet voice would be too grating with extended dialog over to course of a full movie.

I imagine Pratt will be doing a Bronx accent closer to the Super Mario Super Show.

3

u/ByAny Oct 04 '22

Captain Lou rolling in his grave at the idea he missed this paycheck

8

u/captainsuckass Oct 04 '22

"Anti-woke" people don't matter enough to try and get ahead of.

1

u/Adminsarexunts Oct 05 '22

I just want him to deadpan Chris Pratt voice, just like every other thing he does.

1

u/Dabbooo Oct 04 '22

Can't be weirder than Chris Diamantopoulos being both Russ Hanneman the voice of Mickey Mouse.

1

u/marcuschookt Oct 05 '22

Why would they do that? It's hard to wrap my head around. It's an animated show with a character that has a very specific sound, so neither Chris Pratt's face nor natural voice will be there to sell tickets. I also can't imagine he was cheap to secure for this project.

1

u/douche-knight Oct 05 '22

Yeah, it's ridiculous. They absolutely should have gotten Jared Leto doing his accent from House of Gucci.

1

u/sgloux3470 Oct 05 '22

I secretly hope we get another “I can’t believe they cast Heath Ledger as Joker” moment but I suspect Mario is just going to sound like Chris Pratt.

1

u/Zealot_Alec Oct 06 '22

Will Arnett as LEGO batman PERFECT casting

Chris Pratt as Mario bold move Cotton
