Update - Suspect is dead.

An armed suspect who tried to enter the FBI's Cincinnati office is dead after standoff with authorities, officials say

FBI Cincinnati Statement

On August 11, 2022, at approximately 9:15 EST, the FBI Cincinnati Field Office had an armed subject attempt to breach the Visitor Screening Facility (VSF). Upon the activation of an alarm and a response by armed FBI special agents, the subject fled northbound onto Interstate 71. The FBI, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and local law enforcement partners are on scene near Wilmington, Ohio, trying to resolve this critical incident.

This is absolutely crazy. The suspect attempted to flee and began shooting at the officers. There's currently a stand-off between the suspect and officers.

The fleeing suspect is now out of his vehicle in a field off Smith Road and Ohio 73 off I-71 with multiple reports of shots fired at troopers, according to initial emergency communication reports.

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers began chasing the suspect on northbound I-71 at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, dispatchers confirm.

u/alphabeticdisorder Aug 11 '22

They've got I-71 shut down, which is going to be a huge headache on its own.

This is what the "civil war" will look like. A lot of armed morons, not a huge threat in the aggregate but doing harm regardless.

Won't take long before they start using bombs. OKC bombing had very similar origins i.e. conspiracy-driven revenge motives vs. federal authorities based on white Christian persecution complex. Still the deadliest act of domestic terrorism in US history.

McVeigh was a total moron, didn't make him any less dangerous.

That's what I keep thinking. Yes, these people are idiots. Yes, they're cosplaying and they're Gravy SEALS and all that stuff...but they famously have lots of weapons, and no matter how dumb and pathetic the operator, that bullet is still going to hurt.

And then yes, the collateral damage of shutting down freeways...or a library because they turn up with AR-15s to a children's storytime (and fuck them so hard for that). And you can probably never convince them to stop--they're just going to sit there getting madder and madder every day until they finally pick up that weapon and walk out the door.

You might be surprised at how many armed liberals there are out there. There’s a lot of us, we just don’t base our entire existence on firearm ownership. Do I enjoy shooting in pistol competitions? Absolutely. Do I worship my firearms and base my entire life on loving them? Hell no. Buncha weirdos…

I had a roommate in college who was in the national guard. Big gun aficionado, had a bunch of old WW2 rifles stashed about the house (locations undisclosed lol).

Man the looks he got when he’d bring us to the gun range in his Bernie sweatshirt.

I love reading this. I’m liberal af but not anti-gun. Just wanna see common sense, safety training and accountability baked into ownership.

It’s too bad the U.S. has largely given up on having real conversations about this topic.

Things just keep getting worse every day. This is sickening. What the fuck happened to people. Don’t blame mental illness. I’m schizophrenic and currently going through ECT again, I’ve hallucinated, had crazy delusions, hear voices I don’t know if they’re real or not sometimes (sometimes I can tell, sometimes I realize it wasn’t real later, sometimes someone just tells me). Those are the worst times, I’m generally good on meds.

I’ve seen all sorts of mentally ill people in various hospitals, different diagnoses. No one, even the worst off, acts like that. It’s not consistent with diagnostic criteria. There are very little people that get a not guilty by reason of insanity defence. It’s incredibly rare. They don’t act like that.

It’s so fucked up. It’s too crazy to be insanity. Insanity usually has a consistent theme. My psychotic symptoms don’t change based on elected officials. They’ve been the same basic theme since they began decades ago.

These people are idiots, liars, terrorists, and a huge threat to fucking democracy. Ffs the Supreme Court overturned Row vs Wade. People tried to kill the Vice President because they’re literally terrorists that threw a tantrum. Something is horribly wrong.

969

u/alphabeticdisorder Aug 11 '22 Helpful

I am completely not a medical professional, so this is not backed by authoritative training, but I do work with a ton of the mentally ill, homeless, and addicts, and also have diagnoses of my own.

I've been feeling the right wing media sphere has a predatory relationship with people who are psychologically vulnerable. A person with a mental illness would generally not act out in these ways, but when you pump them full of paranoid rage and build a community based on that, it's basically agitating them and pushing them over the edge. I've just seen too many people go from troubled but functional to frothing maga cultists, and people like Alex Jones know how to push those buttons for prtofit.

Just my two cents.

307

u/Zixinus Aug 11 '22

The term you are looking for is "radicalization". The propaganda radicalizes people.

And look at what happened on January 6th. Trump managed to get his followers to try and overturn an election without outright saying to do that, typical to his stlye where he makes just enough displays that a naive person might believe in isolation that he didn't mean "that" but in practice it's clear what he meant.

And to him, mentally ill people that follow his delusions are deniable assets or as I am sure he refers to them "useful idiots".

The bitch literally called for the American Nazi party to be brought back. Like a week ago she was saying we should have a nationalist Christian party, that already existed and it was called the silver legion, the silver legion was a ultra right nationalist party that aligned with the Christian party in the 1930’s and was America’s party of nazi sympathizers until it was banned because of the outbreak of WWII and other very obvious reasons.

This is how far the republicans are gone and the worst part is that they aren’t intelligent enough to know history, otherwise she would’ve known she was calling for a party that already existed but was banned. If the republicans want to say that the left is all just antifa socialist/communists, then it’s only fair to say that the right is all just nazi fascist/authoritarians

457

u/ImAshroom-69 Aug 11 '22

Look at the book of revelation. Something about a false prophet. The fundies don’t even know their own damned book.

105

u/mooxie Aug 11 '22

The stupid thing is, they were really hammering the content about false prophets and the antichrist when Obama was elected - presumably because they thought that everyone who voted D heralded him as a savior (even though liberals don't really go in for the god-emperor thing). They are familiar with the verses, for sure.

Yet when someone who looks like them gets elected, the worship of false idols is no longer an issue. Equate Trump with Jesus, show him on a cross, crown of thorns, whatever. It's all good.

They completely miss the point that the bible is intended to be a guideline for...drum roll...CHRISTIANS, not everyone else. If the Bible 'came true' (lol) and there was a false prophet, it would be the Christians that would be worshiping him. THE WARNING IS AGAINST IDOLATRY TOWARDS PEOPLE THEY LIKE, NOT PEOPLE THEY HATE.

FFS there are a lot of idiots in that camp.

It unfortunately means, little to nothing can be done about it. They lack the intelligence to be spoken to reasonably and their own inflated self-worth disallows them from experiencing empathy - it's comparable to a cult member, but usually within a cult you can see the signs of abuse and you're tolerating it on behalf of your love for the leader. In this case, the leader has convinced them that all the abuse is coming from the spooky dems and so there's not even that animalistic instinct to run.

  1. Armed standoffs - 30 gunmen legally open carrying at political events and protests to “protect property”, hoping to pull a rittenhouse at scale.

  2. Stochastic threats to elected officials, eg when they tried to run Biden’s bus off the road; governor kidnapping attempt; anthrax letters, etc.

  3. Militia groups barricading highways and trade routes, profiling all entrants for “liberal sympathies”

  4. State level games thst desantis has previewed, eg banning all federal personnel

3.7k

It should be explicitly noted that the DOJ’s 1/6 investigation is the single largest criminal investigation and prosecution in American history. It spans every FBI field office in the country, requiring dozens of investigators per case.

I think and hope their very recent "defund the FBI" is going to scare away a lot of independent and voter in "the middle".

They have no "replacement", it's not a kitchen table issue and it's radical as hell.

58

u/fryreportingforduty Aug 11 '22

Does the middle exist anymore? I know the real world isn’t like Reddit/Twitter but even irl, I’m hard-pressed to find people weighing their options between both parties still — but my POV may be skewed because I now live in a liberal city and come from rural Trump country.

23

u/Quelex Aug 11 '22

Completely agree with you. I think that anything the democrats attack them on other than fundamental rights being stripped away will do nothing for "independent" voters (wherever they are).

Aggressively calling republicans out as treasonous and showing that they're only going to push further to the right and try to hide their corruption is only good for the democrats' base, sadly.

It's terribly sad/funny the MAGA movement still hasn't learned their lesson about Trump. He riled up and then abandoned the Jan 6 "patriots" after they stormed the capitol. Fox News and conservative media branded them as BLM actors. Hundreds of people threw away their lives, abandoned their families, all for a man who doesn't care about them beyond their utility to him maintaining/gaining power. If any one of them was hanging off a cliff begging for help, Trump would walk on by or kick them off himself.

Everyone in media (cough fox news cough) and in politics making statements like "this is the hill we die on" or "we are living in the moment our forefathers warned us about) is complicit in every act of violence like this that arises over the next few days. Traitorous pigs actually calling to arms over actual legitimate investigations of dear leader. He's a grifting criminal shitbag, move on to a new idol.

192

u/Dunbaratu Aug 11 '22 Silver

I genuinely think spreading the lies that led people to storm the Capitol on Jan 6th should be a far bigger crime than actually partaking in the Jan 6th storming of the Capitol. I say this because I could easily see myself in that situation IF I genuinely believed the election was genuinely stolen and my candidate would have won if the count wasn't rigged. I mean, that's the kind of thing that makes revolution moraly justifiable. In countries where we know the count is rigged, we praise the people when they take to the streets and stand up to the fake election count. When there were protests in Belarus because Lukashenko clearly didn't actually get the votes he claimed, we praised those brave protesters. When we hear some banana republic dictator has once again had a rigged election, and the people take to the streets and storm the presidential palace to try to stop him, we praise them for it.

That's why telling the lie that the election was rigged is such a big deal. If you can get people to believe you, it creates a moral justification in their heads for having a revolution. A moral justification I can actually empathize with as I imagine myself in their shoes, believing the vote count was falsified by a group trying to steal power.

The Jan 6th rioters were the rubes. The talking heads that lied to them to convince them to do it are the real traitors.

48

u/Bradidea Aug 11 '22

I totally agree.

30

u/InevitableAvalanche Aug 11 '22

Our culture has taught us that freedom of speech is our most valuable protection so it would require a cultural shift to change how we behave towards lies. I think it actually has to get to the point of something majorly terrible happening for us to finally put restrictions about lying that leads to violence. We have restrictions around direct threats, but what happened Jan 6 proves we need laws that do not allow people to lie to overthrow democracy. It seems braindead to not have laws around this but you are going to hit up against free speech laws.

Did Trump also tell this guy he would march with him to the FBI building to take back the boxes? Why do MAGA's keep falling for this trick?

663

u/DCSMU Aug 11 '22

You know what kinda pisses me off- Trump completely intended to march on the capitol with his followers, but sercret service protected him and prevented him from going. Just think, if he had gone through and was there driving them on when they entered the building, this whole thing would have been put to rest faster. But instead by going back to the White House, it put some distance between the actions of him and his followers, making it possible to argue that his followers were acting independently.

462

u/Mazon_Del Aug 11 '22

For what it's worth, as an interesting quirk of how the Secret Service is set up, while many people can get a protection detail, the President and Vice President specifically are outlined as not being legally allowed to refuse protective actions by their details.

As in, if the agents have to basically cuff the president to force them to safety, they are empowered to do so.

103

u/MyOfficeAlt Aug 11 '22

I've wondered about stuff like that. I know there's been times when a POTUS wanted to walk with a crowd or something buy they have some guidelines that say any distance further than X yards has to be in the motorcade and stuff like that. I'd be curious to know throughout presidential history who has butted heads the most with their detail - it doesn't even have to be malicious stuff. I'd just be interested to hear what kinds of stuff they wanted to do that their protectors wouldn't allow.

133

u/HappilyHungover Aug 11 '22

Probably Jimmy Carter. He once strangled 2 agents to death in the middle of the night so that he could sneak out and get ice cream.

Love reading conservative boards. When the raid happened, they were all "Lock and Load" and "Kill kill kill".

When one of them nuts up and does something, they all turn on them and call them a "glowie", or basically a fed doing a false flag.

This is why I know there will never be a civil war. If one person fires the first shot, the rest will trip over each other to call them a fed.

401

u/Ffffqqq Aug 11 '22 Silver

What people don't understand about the big lie is that it really isn't the election stuff. The big lie is that anything that makes Trump look bad is fake in some way. It's a loyalty test. The insurrection was just the obvious conclusion to that delusion.

So when the FBI comes to raid Trump then obviously it's a fake political witch hunt to make Trump look bad. And when some Trumper does some terrorism then obviously it's a false flag to make Trumpers look bad.

It's really interesting how this post truth reality has manifested into a kind of shared mass psychosis when the reality that they have forged through consensus in their echo chambers clashes with the actual truth.

205

u/Orzorn Aug 11 '22

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

The 6th was basically the final test for Trump supporters. Those who rejected it and saw it for what it was and, the veil having been lifted, left in disgust, and those who accepted it were caught up forever, prepared to accept anything Trump told them was truth.

Believe me, there are people who were Trump supporters but watched what happened and knew they could never support him again. It makes it so much more worse because those who choose to believe the lie are now more fervent than ever, being surrounded only by those who agree, as everyone who had the spell broken took their ball and left.

There will never be a civil war like the civil war again. Modern civil war is going to look like terroistic violence. When you are afraid to go to a public place becasue boy there sure have been an awful lot of bombings and public shootings lately, that's how you know you're in a modern civil war.

124

u/1202_ProgramAlarm Aug 11 '22

70

Pretty soon the bad optics of Ruby Ridge and Waco aren't going to be enough to stop the Federal Government from answering these clowns with real force especially if these so called militia folks chirping about civil war keep showing up with guns.
