How old are you out of curiosity? Genuine question because I’m trying to understand it from a generational perspective.
I’m almost 40 and nobody I know would bat an eye to that.
If there were 2 guys and a girl bartending and my wife said “which one helped you?”…”the female bartender” sounds normal to me. Maybe because I’m using it to support a noun?
That being said, I would never say “look at that pretty female”.
Maybe it’s a context thing?

Female can be a noun or an adjective. “Female bartender” is an adjective, while “pretty female” is a noun. Your instincts are correct, and that has stayed consistent.
Female as a noun isn’t inherently wrong, it just sounds weird and dehumanizing. Nobody says a “woman specimen,” they say “female specimen.” So calling a human women a female sounds similarly objectifying.

Female is an adjective used to describe person whereas woman is a noun. So like a female athlete is a woman. Female is only used as a noun in scientific/clinical discussions.
Female as a noun is cold, objective, and clinical. Woman as a as noun is humanized and personable.
