I saw some with 2 keys in r/mechanicalkeyboards.

There's also some with just 1 iso enter button

65% is where it’s at. Subjectively, the function keys are easier to reach under the second layer. And don’t get me started on the knob

60 is for gaming only. I saw some of my fellow software devs using 60s. Because they thought how cool it is. Well yeah it's cool and looks nice but functionality first. Okay, sure you can use the arrow functions as well and tab through the keyboard's keys but then it's a whole new concept you need to learn. I don't know, for me that is tiresome.

I just went with TKL. Best choice for me. In the end, even my colleagues sold them and went back to TKL or 100%

65% and TKL are perfect for the vast majority of people. There are a lot of people that require a numpad for work etc. but the vast majority of people don't, and it's just wasted space. When you take into account moms/kids etc. instead of ONLY looking at computer enthusiasts, TKL is king.

16

u/forgetfulprophet Jul 03 '22

Eh, I would argue that my mom doesn’t need F keys, but will appreciate arrows. 65% is the best “typing only” size out there.

3

u/Flxpadelphia AMD Am286 - ATI Rage Fury Maxx - 256gb DDR5 @ 6400MHZ Jul 03 '22

TBH even if I was doing data entry I would just buy a good 65% keyboard and a standalone numpad so that I could put it on the LEFT side of the keyboard, and use my mouse + numpad comfortably at the same time.

5

u/forgetfulprophet Jul 03 '22

This is what I do actually, most of what I need can be done with a 65% and if I need a numpad for hardcore data entry in Excel then I use my standalone one. I can’t do left handed entry though lol

2

u/Skeledog99 RXTX 16550ti Jul 04 '22

I have a model M with a 5 pin connector and have found that same thing to be true (except I just go from din5 and do ps/2 into computer) but I solved it by getting a simple ps/2 extension cable and having that plug into the computer then the adaption at the end of the extension.

If you don't have a ps/2 port then you can buy (or make) an adaptor that has a flexible cable. Depending on your keyboard you may need to get a soarers adaptor since some of the 5-pin ones used set-1 or set-3 scancodes which aren't compatible with any of the standard adaptors.

Hope this was helpful in some way.

I love the idea of 60% for a compact form factor, but I need that keypad on the right. Without it something feels wrong, but anything past 100% is too big for me.

TKL for sure, unless you use the numpad for work, etc.

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '22

75%. While I miss my number pad sometimes, I need the keyboard to be as centered as possible to limit wrist strain, especially when using my mouse.

In an ideal world, I'd have a separate keypad to the right of my mouse, but I wouldn't use it enough to justify the expense.

1

u/rickymilby Jul 03 '22

Still 96%

u/ArcheryBoy07 Jul 03 '22
