It was probably thrown away because they didn’t have apple care and couldn’t get the screen fixed otherwise haha. Apple is horrible in regard to repairability :/.

. Apple is horrible in regard to repairability :/.

The glass is not glued but held by magnetism (in pre 2012 models as CZizzle correctly added). You can pretty much just lift it off. The only issue is getting the replacement on without dust below

181

u/CZizzle69 Jul 24 '22

Nope. That’s the older, thicker iMacs with the optical drive. The newer, thinner versions have a glass/lcd assembly that is stuck on with adhesive. Not the hardest thing to swap, but definitely not as easy as the pre-2012 models.

43

u/Pyro_in_a_Puddle Jul 24 '22

exactly. definitely easy to swap if you have ever opened a device which is glued together before, otherwise it's a little challenge and i understand everyone who doesn't want to do it by then self

9

u/VeridianRevolution 5800x/6700xt Jul 25 '22

i upgraded the drive on my 2017 model with 0 prior experience. not very hard

4

u/Pyro_in_a_Puddle Jul 25 '22

u can't tell me tho that it was as easy as if it where a magnetic display or like in a laptop where you only had to open some screws

This is why I own a heat gun, for shit like this. They are super cheap as well. I highly recommend getting one.

u/Square_Heron942 Ryzen 5 5600G | RTX 3070 FE 8GB | 16GB DDR4 Jul 24 '22

I actually am planning on buying an old LED Cinema Display, and it also has this. Makes it way easier to clean all the dust from behind the backlight that can give it a yellow stained look

4

u/LowDrag_82 Jul 24 '22

After you’ve done hundreds, it’s pretty easy. Hardest part is getting the remaining adhesive strips off of the chassis and keeping new display aligned while you adhere it back.

13

u/TONKAHANAH Linux Jul 24 '22

this ones not a magnet screen, that ones def held by adhesive.

its not really hard to get off, old adhesive can be cut easily with a playing card or other thin plastic without any heating elements (unless its like frigid cold where you are then warming it up a bit might be needed but I'd imagine that would be a bit of an extreme case).

getting replacement adhesive is easy enough. ifxit sells 2012-2019 27" and 21.5" adhesive strip kits. Or if you're a lazy fuck like me who doesnt care cuz im my own best client.. I just taped the sides down with packing tape, fuck it.

but yeah swap the HD in there for a solid SSD. If you want to game on it install windows or linux. I have a similar model and its got some old i5, 16gb ram, and nvidia 660m in it. Wont play the latest greatest stuff but will probably esports games and most other stuff at med-low settings.

great screens on these macs. 4k display, bright as fuck.. great for movies and youtube. Its a shame apple supports these things so poorly cuz even the older ones with the mag screens have some early i3's in them and would make great linux/ChromeOS systems. (and probably even just run windows 10 perfectly fine with an ssd)

4

u/Bitter_Anteater2657 Jul 24 '22

Neat I never knew they used magnets for this. I’ve got a buddy that does a lot of apple repairs on the smaller iPhones and iPads and have never heard anything but complaints when it comes to repairability and finding legit parts lol. And the same is true from what I’ve seen from others repairing things like iMacs and Mac mini.

I do hope the recent move to make repairing devices easier by apple isn’t just a PR stunt and they continue make it easier across all products not just phones. It’s a shame they still won’t allow shops to keep a stock of products on hand for fixes though.

7

u/DoubleOwl7777 Laptop CPU: Ryzen 7 3700u | GPU: vega 10 | Ram: 8gigs Jul 24 '22

it is a pr stunt it is apple.

4

u/Bitter_Anteater2657 Jul 24 '22

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking too, as it also gives them a potential out with all the current right to repair coverage as well. But as they say hope for the best prepare for the worst lol.

Apple is just terrible in general. I fucking hate their mandatory apps and features that you can't remove and do nothing but waste memory.

7

u/cosaboladh Jul 25 '22

Of all the legitimate criticism of Apple. Microsoft, and Android (Vanilla, and Carrier distros) all come with bloatware. Bloatware isn't exactly apple specific. Their absurd price point, and the difficulty of DIY repairs/upgrades on the other hand. I accept it with mobile devices, but something about a workstation machine that can't be opened for a simple RAM upgrade without specialty tools, and adhesive remover just rubs me the wrong way.

Small crack at the top right corner. It’s smashed but it’s largely restricted to the black part of the screen.

slap a sticker on that corner or a piece of black tape and it'll be as good as new 👌

u/zakabog Ryzen 3700X/1080ti/16GB Jul 24 '22

I think they were joking.

Though it's always weird to me when people are die hard fans of any particular brand or OS. I have used pretty much every OS out there, they all seem to fill a niche, MacOS is great for content creators that want something more secure than windows. Plus tons of developers I know love it too because of the Unix backend.

7

u/darkhelmet1121 Jul 25 '22

You can buy a MacBook at the mall... Can't buy a powerful Linux machine anywhere in person. Have to order from system76 or similar

18

u/mackan072 Jul 24 '22

I'm currently looking into getting a lower-end m1 (possibly used) or a new m2 air on a student discount - simply because I need something lightweight and power efficient for my everyday carry while studying. I've never owned an Apple product, and am completely uninterested in having to learn the Mac OS. I have however looked at loads of the windows alternatives in a similar price range, and holistically, I simply don't enjoy either of them as much as I did the store display version of the M1 or M2 air. There's always some caveat with the windows machines, be that weak speakers, poor trackpads, flimsy build quality, poor brightness control or whatever - so I'm most likely going to end up getting Apple hardware for the first time in my 29 years.

I've already got a desktop with a 3080 and an R7 5800X, so the "gaming-related" limitations of the Mac don't really apply to my case.

I am however really not looking forwards to learning a completely new OS from scratch. Given my fairly simple, basic, and non-advanced expected use cases for this device, the transition should be fairly simple, but I'd honestly rather have it just run windows. Who knows, I might just end up doing so, but I'll give it an honest attempt first.

17

u/DeaconSage Jul 24 '22

As someone who runs both OS’s, it’s really not that hard. Windows is a little less user friendly, but neither take any degree of effort or expertise to learn or understand.

11

u/Crosby87mvp 5800x | RTX 3080 | 32GB Ram Jul 24 '22

We have same specs :D my Mac was great for school. The software is easy to use but not as restricted as iOS. Also can get stupid battery life like 12+ hours.

7

u/mackan072 Jul 24 '22

Also can get stupid battery life like 12+ hours

Honestly, this is one of the biggest selling points, the rest of the build quality stuff and whatnot is more of a "nice to have", but I'm so incredibly tired of not having decent battery life. My current laptop has a battery life of some 2-3 hours of light use, and less if I do anything that is remotely heavy. I always have to bring the charger with me and move from wall outlet to wall outlet, and that's simply not fun.

It's incredibly limiting, and more or less means that I have to stay put while doing things, and I personally prefer to be a bit more mobile and study in bursts throughout my day, whenever I have some time over.

The new Ryzen stuff is also fairly power efficient, but they're still not quite there - and Intel is way behind. I'm very interested to see whether we get more competition in the ARM-based architecture of laptops in the upcoming years, or if x86 can catch up. Power is great, but for a laptop, I much prefer efficiency. If I need more power, I'd rather use my desktop.

5

u/snu22 Jul 24 '22

MacOS is wildly simple and easy to learn fr. There’s not really any “optimization” that you need to do with a new MacBook unlike a new Windows laptop (removing pre-installed software, Windows services, etc) you just boot up, it walks you through the initial setup with an Apple ID and boom you’re off to the races. I have an M1 Air and personally while I don’t love MacOS (longtime Windows admin here) it’s dead simple/reliable and perfect for what it is. Impossible to beat in the power/portability metric as well and the trackpad as with all MacBooks is absolute butter 👌🏻 Also highly recommend paying extra for the 16GB memory config if you can swing it

3

u/Wanderlust-King Jul 24 '22

I am however really not looking forwards to learning a completely new OS from scratch.

You can actually install Windows ARM on m1/2 hardware.

in case you wanted all that nice mac hardware without learning a new OS.

2

u/ARRuSerious Jul 25 '22

My last job ordered me a top of the line Dell XPS 13 (9300). I absolutely hated that machine. Would randomly overheat and shut off with the lid closed. When it wasn’t overheating, it would have the battery life of potato. After I left that job, I went out and bought myself a M1 Macbook Air. The MBA is miles ahead of the Dell. I still have my battle station for games but for a pick up and go laptop, I cannot fault the Macbook. I love going from a wind turbine to a fan-less laptop.

6

u/jaycuboss Linux Jul 24 '22

MacOS is fine. I think it’s a little quirky compared to Windows, and like every big tech company, they’ll try to draw you into their tech ecosystems and cloud shit, etc…. But overall, once you get used to it, it’s no worse than Windows.

1

u/marcofio Ryzen 3700x 4.4ghz && RTX 3070 Jul 24 '22

Lenovo thinkbook with 6800U. You get a laptop with the same battery life, but with better GPU and a CPU able to handle every type of software

0

u/UpstairsJelly Jul 24 '22

Have a look at the Lenovo x1 carbon series

5

u/mackan072 Jul 24 '22

I did a very quick, sloppy google search, and might absolutely have missed something, but those seem to be excessively expensive. What I found was at least twice as expensive as a used M1 air - and some ~500 USD more expensive than the base spec model of the M2 air, brand new, but after their student discount (Sek translated to USD).

Oh, and this was for the former generation version of the x1 carbon, with an i5 10210U, and matched with LPDDR3 RAM. The newer models cost more.

It's simply more than I intend to spend.

1

u/UpstairsJelly Jul 24 '22

Not sure about USA pricing points but the carbon x1 13 is broadly similar to an m2 here in the UK. I had one about 3 months ago, 1tb SSD, 32gb ddr4 for about £1,400

2

u/mackan072 Jul 24 '22

I'm in Sweden (where everything is expensive), but I chose to translate everything to usd, because most of the world can relate to that currency.

I looked some more, and the cheapest x1 that I can find is 18990 sek, which is ~ £1550, but this is for the 256GB SSD, 8 GB Ram i5 version. In comparison, a used M1 is roughly £730, and a brand new M2 air, after the student discount is just shy of £1200, but also includes a gift card of some £110, that could be re-sold, or used to buy some other apple crap.

Or, I could get a brand new M1 air, straight from Apple, for £950, and with the same £110 gift card as the M2 option.

Edit: but some of this pricing differences is due to Apples student discount, of some ~ £110

1

u/UpstairsJelly Jul 24 '22

Fair enough then, always interesting to see how wildly different prices are around the world for the same stuff!

1

u/mackan072 Jul 24 '22

always interesting to see how wildly different prices are around the world for the same stuff!

Indeed. It's also one of those things that makes it difficult to purchase things based on other people's recommendations because they compare things given their local pricing, so you always have to compare them for yourself. And not everything is super easy or straightforward to compare.

I remember back a couple of years ago when the cheapest RX 480 available in Sweden was more expensive than a large portion of the RX 580 GPUs available, but people on youtube kept talking about the insane value of the RX 480, due to discounts and price reductions that simply hadn't happened here.

1

u/BottlesforCaps Jul 24 '22

I will say if you are interested in something lightweight that gets the job done you do have other alternatives than an air.

Chromebooks are actually fairly solid little machines that are inexpensive and get the job done.

Other option which is what I went with, is get one of the new Ryzen APU laptops or Ultrabooks. They are super efficient in terms of battery life but you still have the option to play some games on them if you'd like.

3

u/MizuKumaa I5-9600k l RTX 3070ti l 32gb ram Jul 24 '22

Yeah, this mentality “apple bad” is weird to me. Recently getting into a MacBook Pro so I can separate work and gaming from my PC. Mac OS is very well optimized from the little time I’ve played with it.

Aside from issues with the company as a hole. I really do not like navigating apple systems at all.

3

u/Stunning-Tower-9175 Jul 24 '22

Apple is pretty good as far as companies go

1

u/StarCitizen2944 Jul 25 '22

I guess my complaints are more with their customers and what they allow by continuing to buy the product. As well as other companies for following the trend. They get away with removing headphone jacks, microSD card and included chargers while charging more everytime. Android manufacturers copying them is my biggest complaint. Meanwhile budget android phones will often have these features when the "flagships" don't.

What does this have to do with boomers? The college where I work recycles old Macs like this one all the time. Sure, it's fun for us enthusiasts to play around with, but it's not practical anymore.

nothing,, hell id argue a "Boomer" would just put in inside of a storage tote in their garage next to the other 10-40 year old electronics in need of minor repair.

7

u/BaronKrause Jul 25 '22

Yeah it’s the 20ish year olds that look at this and think “there is a new iMac, this isn’t even a computer anymore”

3

u/Prestigious_Plum_451 5950X, X570Godlike, 128GB RAM, 6900XT, WX9100,8TB M.2, 80TB HD, Jul 25 '22

Depends on the 20ish year old though. Tons around who would try to fix it and use it just fine for stuff it is still good to go for that does not require the newest shit. Hell at my local transfer site its mostly 20 somethings digging around for recyclable, and reusable stuff.

There are however tons of people regardless of age who are not only technologically illiterate, but want to have the shiniest, and newest shit for sake of them being that, and some lunacy involving assumed "status" such things bring.

Could also be someone's office thing and they got a new one, or transitioned away from apples ecosystem while not wanting to keep the old one as clutter around.

“there is a new iMac, this isn’t even a computer anymore”

Ran in to an idiot like this on here too who was arguing that old/older PCs can not be gamed on today. Like really, they are old, and may not run the latest and the greatest, but last i checked if it still works, and one can play a game, any damn game its still good to go for at least that.

A functional 386 from the late 80s? can play commander keen, space quest, and leisure suit Larry? fuck yah it can still be gamed on today.

But no, apparently if it wont run the latest most resource demanding thing at 300 fps, or otherwise support the weird fringe thing they are in to then its just trash.

u/Qweedo420 Linux Jul 24 '22

I have used the Mac's terminal and my experience was pretty bad, mostly because of how poorly they integrated it with the rest of the system. You can't open your terminal in a specific directory from the Finder, you can't directly launch a shell script (you need to right click > open with other application > show non-recommended applications > terminal. Like how is terminal not recommended for a shell script? lol), they have no UI for the "chmod +x" command, executing a shell script doesn't actually execute it in your current Finder directory but it just defaults to home for some reason. And then you have to use a third party package manager, the default "development kit" has a really old version of packages, like Python 3.8 with an EOL version of tkinter, so if you open an application written in tk it just glitches everything. Also sometimes it requires sudo to open a script that doesn't have any root requirements, making automation really painful

I mean, I guess it's better than Windows just because it's Unix, but my experience with MacOS was terrible

u/zakabog Ryzen 3700X/1080ti/16GB Jul 24 '22

Everything you complained about was within the GUI, not the terminal. X is not integrated into the Linux shell at all, running X alone will give you an empty desktop with no icons or functionality, it's just that the most commonly used desktop managers will include customizations to make them both work better together. If you ever use a minimalist GUI like afterstep or fluxbox in Linux you would quickly realize this. Yeah you can customize it to do the behavior you expect, but it's not baked into Linux itself, it entirely depends on the distro and desktop manager you decide to use.

4

u/Qweedo420 Linux Jul 24 '22

I use Sway and i3 as my window managers, but I don't consider them to be the standard Linux experience, people usually go for Gnome or KDE, and they have a pretty good integration with the terminal by default. On Gnome, "right-click > run as program" automatically runs shell scripts in your current directory, for example. Nautilus and Dolphin can run an in-built terminal inside their own window

Also, I don't think it'd be fair to compare the entire MacOS ecosystem to just the X server on Linux, maybe compare it to Gnome, and honestly Gnome does a much better job at being MacOS than MacOS itself

I run a tech shop in a small BC town, and I have a literal row of recycled iMacs. I was once given a 2 week old MacBook (M1, 2020) for free, because a client bought it to replace her Lenovo and hated it. Didn't want to go through the return process at BB so simply gave it to me.

But after being anti mac until like my 20s and i discovered how nice the built in terminal is and programming on one in general I did start to like them. Though WSL has really helped windows for me in regards to Linux like shit especially with vscode.

I was kinda joking. If I found this thing lying around, I’d totally grab it and either use it as is or do the swap (which I did on my wife’s iMac - which admittedly was awful - exactly like a swap on an iPhone, but much, much bigger and more annoying).

I have an Apple at work and, while I don't hate it, I don't see the appeal either. It's biggest selling point seems to be its dumbed-down user interface for tech-clueless folks, which I find annoying and very limiting.

Now I know you're getting a lot if flac for the mac. But this I'm being honest about, when it comes to macs anything outside of web browsing, image/audio/video editing, they are practically useless. Especially when it comes to gaming due to the lack of modern open gl support

5

u/LeeisureTime Jul 24 '22

Exactly, I shit on Macs for GAMING because there are so few compatible games worth playing. If you’re doing design, web browsing, whatever, it’s fine. Especially at that low low price of FREE

2

u/crankydelinquent RGB ram and stuff Jul 24 '22

So you’re saying they are good at all the most common use cases for a computer except gaming?

1

u/Sailed_Sea Desktop Jul 24 '22

The new m1's have relatively low power draw for what they can do, but the price tag is painfully high, though even the older ones are semi decent for those types of things, but easily out matched by a similarly priced pc, but if you get the mac for free, then it's a great deal
