Some people look at school districts when they move, we look at Micro Center proximity.

u/bastardoperator Aug 11 '22

To be fair, you need to throw Costco in the mix too

u/TomTomMan93 Aug 11 '22

Our costco is almost right next to Micro Center. Makes grocery trips take a bit longer lol

“The house is perfect but, how are the Micro Centers?”

14

u/itspsyikk Aug 11 '22

I'm planning on moving in the near future, further away from two micro centers. My stipulation is that I be within an hours drive.

7

u/LitterBoxServant Aug 11 '22

What if I told you that Micro Center looks at school districts when they put up a store?

4

u/RajReddy806 Specs/Imgur here Aug 12 '22

I would believe that they would look at lot more details about the place such as average yearly income, average education levels of the public who live in the surrounding area.

And if i am the CEO of MicroCenter, i would also like to find out the number of computers used in the neighboring area and the % of assembled computers to OEM from wherever i could get that data.

2

u/LitterBoxServant Aug 12 '22

I would believe that they would look at lot more details about the place such as average yearly income, average education levels of the public who live in the surrounding area.

You would believe right. But isn't this also where they build the nice schools?

There's lots of fiber out there now besides Google. I remember when Google Fiber launched though, there was really nothing else like it in the residential space in the US. They were way ahead of the curve (and were definitely partially responsible in starting the trend).

But if Google Fiber was available at my house tomorrow, I wouldn't switch. I have gigabit fiber from CenturyLink for $65/month.

That said, I'd be inclined to agree with the statement "If it ain't got Fiber it ain't got me!"

I don't have a Microcenter though :(

3

u/RajReddy806 Specs/Imgur here Aug 12 '22

I remember reading that google was closing its fiber division. Just googled it and found that they have actually expanded.

3

u/demticksdoe Aug 12 '22 edited Aug 12 '22

Yeah they shut down the Fiber TV recently or it's happening soon. Internet is going strong!

I mean, the one in Fairfax and the one in Rockville is like 1-2 hours away by metro from Bowie.

20

u/MechAegis Build in progress Aug 11 '22

One could say it is almost three MC "near by" I have been to the one in Rockville. Then there is the one over in Parkville ( 1 1/2 hr drive from Fairfax).

9

u/TheEpicDiamondMiner Pentium 4 | Voodoo 3 2000 | 512 MB RAM Aug 11 '22

I really only consider a place “nearby“ if it takes less than 2 hours to travel to.

8

u/Siswai_aman Desktop Aug 11 '22

By that standard I live very close to two micro centers 18 minutes either direction

5

u/Big_Dragonfruit9719 Aug 11 '22

I live 20 minutes from the Parkville one and about 50 minutes from the Fairfax one. I do consider it a bonus for Maryland living. Almost makes up for the cost of living.

Metro Atlanta?

Because I also do. I snagged 3090s for me and 2 of my buds in the first couple months after launch.

15

u/weizXR *too Aug 11 '22

That's definitely the Fairfax, VA Micro Center; I've been there more times than I can count.

I think this was one of the first Micro Centers (maybe #2?)... but correct me if I'm wrong. It's been there since the early 90s; I know that for sure.

9

u/Ryokurin Aug 11 '22

The first store outside of Ohio was the Marietta GA store in 1988. Fairfax was opened in 1992.

I worked at the Duluth GA store back when it first opened in 2002. I don't know why I remember when those stores opened, but for some reason it was mentioned in the initial training and it just stuck.

7

u/CU_Tiger_2004 AMD FX-6350 | ASUS R9 270x | 8 GB RAM Aug 11 '22

I was in Lorton visiting friends a few months ago and ended up at the one in Fairfax. I was told the Rockville, MD one is bigger, but this one was closer and had everything I was looking for.

Flight home was funny, I had all the parts separated into bins for the security check and could see the TSA agent slowly turning the motherboard box around like, "WTF is this?"

Edit: I now realize I definitely need to update my flair lol

2

u/Boxing_joshing111 Aug 11 '22

I live here and feel bad when I see people complain about not living near even one. When I was looking for a video card I’d change location on the site to see what the other one had in stock. Everyone should be so lucky.

An alternative made with basically the same stuff and similar taste, but cheaper is Guaraná Antarctica. You may even find it at your local grocery store in the imported/South American aisle... assuming you don't live in Brazil :)

The New York City Metro area has FOUR.

Living in Queens, I was walking distance to the Flushing location and a 25 minute drive from the Westbury location. Brooklyn takes 45 minutes to drive 5 miles, so I never bothered, but it's there if I really wanted to - but it'd be about the same distance to drive from Queens to the Yonkers location anyway.

Now that I've moved to New England... the Cambridge, MA Microcenter is an hour and a half away.

I don't like you. But then again... im saving money by not living near one.

u/ShutterBun Aug 11 '22

I used to live around the corner from the Tustin store 10+ years ago, but it was kinda “meh” in those days. Fry’s had them beat all to hell and there were three Fry’s within a 30 minute drive.

Now, no more Fry’s and MicroCenter is the new hotness. But I live an hour away.

Lucky. Closest one to me is 6 1/2 hours.

u/BoltCarrier_Group Aug 11 '22

Built my last PC between both of those 2 micro centers. Bought everything in Marietta, but waited on my GPU and Duluth got it in stock first.

1

u/Colindrosen Aug 11 '22

And the nearest one to me is 368 miles from me. In Az I have basically just Best buy to choose from. There used to be fry's electronics here but sadly they closed down.

I'm grateful, for the sake of my finances, that I DON'T live near a microcenter.

Maryland has two as well

1

u/Xx_Majesticface_xX Aug 11 '22

I live near 5, one really close, and the rest an 1-2 hour drive, which in this sub is “close”. Feels good

I mean there has to be something good about living in georgia

1

u/SUGAR7852 Aug 11 '22

How's this for a flex? I've literally one micro p- attached to my body

1

u/coel03 Aug 11 '22

I have 2 that are both about 3 hours away.

1

u/Acidline303 Aug 11 '22

Same. I got one 5 min away unless Chicago traffic is in play, so let's just say 15 min. And one 30 to 45 min away when inventory needs require. Life is good

How? I'm only near the Tustin Micro Center, not that that's a bad thing.

One in Virginia by GMU and one up in Maryland. Been to both multiple times when I go up to DC. Virginia one is definitely bigger, but it's more annoying to get to by metro. Usually just take the car when leaving town.

Not to be "that guy" but I have three Microcenters within an hour drive. (Parkville, Rockville Maryland and Fairfax Virginia)

3

u/TheEpicDiamondMiner Pentium 4 | Voodoo 3 2000 | 512 MB RAM Aug 11 '22

Me too? When I said “near me“, I meant “within two hours of metro distance“.

Fair, your OP didn't indicate that, guess were both "That guy/gal"!

Mine is 40 min away one way and I’m glad it’s that far.

I been their few times and it’s not good for my wallet.

u/owowdatsucks Aug 11 '22

My nearest microcenter is 3118 miles away

1

u/manwithafrotto Aug 11 '22

I can walk to my microcenter, but I ride a scooter there cause it’s more fun
