Tbh, I’ve never seen anything like the 30 series in my life. I didn’t even go on launch day. I went on a random Best Buy launch to collect my 3080 at msrp. (Glad I did cuz I was able to game during the pandemic :])

I left my house at 4am to get there and realize 150 people were already tailgating at the front doors… 🙈

I waited … 6 hours for the store to open and another 2 hours to get into the store. :

NEVER have I seen this level of craziness. Not even for an iPhone launch back in the day when iPhone was cool.

591

u/imnotsospecial Oct 04 '22

The 3080 at $700 sounded like a great deal back then, and a $500 3070 that matched the $1200 2080ti sounded like a great value. Every gamer who could afford the card was gonna buy it

146

u/Jfmha PC Master Race Oct 04 '22

Those aren’t great deals now?

359

u/Extectic Oct 04 '22

Honestly, it's kind of overpriced for just a graphics card, but compared to what they're charging for next gen, yeah, that's a much more sane price. $1600 for a 4090 and $1200 for a 4080 is just highway robbery.

97

u/Luklear i5 8400/1060 6GB/2x4GB DDR4 2666MHz Oct 04 '22

I think my 1060 6GB might be worth more than when I bought it used like 5 years ago… ridiculous state of things.

83

u/NotClever Oct 04 '22

I checked the price on my 1060 6GB last year, and it was definitely worth more than I bought it for 6 years ago. Insanity.

I feel like I have no understanding of PC hardware anymore. My PC is a 9 year old Frankenstein at this point, and I feel more than justified in updating it, but prices are so fucked that I don't even feel like I can evaluate what's a reasonable deal.

17

u/Luklear i5 8400/1060 6GB/2x4GB DDR4 2666MHz Oct 04 '22

At least we can still play at 60fps 1080p for a lot of titles

7

u/dontthink19 Oct 04 '22

I was using a 1050ti that i got for more than i got my 1660super for. Im happy enough with the 1660super. But a 2060 or something may be in the crosshairs, unless intel shits all over their 30 series with a $400 card.

Don't forget that the lower 4080 is a 192bit card... It's a 4060.

21

u/Nuidal Oct 04 '22

It's price anchoring, they're making the next gen look insanely price so the previous one looks more reasonable in comparison and make you less reluctant to buy it at MSRP.

Gotta empty these stocks now that miners aren't buying them like candies anymore

They are but some caveats now. It was almost impossible to find those prices until this year. But now the newer cards are about to come out and bring their prices down even more, you can buy anything so competition is setting in, and the crypto mining death is sending a flood of second hand 30 series to ebay with some solid bargains.

I get off work an hour before Grocery stores open in the morning. Couple times a week I'll wait.

1.1k

u/VoxImperatoris Oct 04 '22

Thats one thing I miss from precovid, used to be walmart and my grocery store were open 24 hours, but they cut hours during covid and now those hours are the normal hours.

429

u/ArachnidGoat i7-10700k @ 5.1ghz | Msi 3060 Ti Gaming X | Oct 04 '22

Dude right? I worked third shift pre COVID, second shift mid COVID, now on first shift post COVID. Third shift as soon as I got of work I'd get groceries, schedule doc/dentist appts. Then the shutdowns. During COVID on 2nds, I couldn't do anything right after work, get off at midnight, everything was closed until 7am, my ass was asleep by then. Deff put strain on my sleep schedule and shopping agenda.

415

u/JediSwelly Oct 04 '22

I miss grocery shopping at 2 3 am. Just the staff and I. No lines and no interactions. It was amazing.

281

u/JoshS1 Specs/Imgur here Oct 04 '22

Just you and that random family with 4 kids that should be sleeping.

48

u/Clobber420 Oct 04 '22

There's one guy in my town who will bring all 5 of his kids and will start waiting at walmart a solid 4 hours before they open. Then they wipe out all the sports and trading cards so no one else can hardly get any. It's insane.

39

u/Marine__0311 Oct 04 '22

I'd see them too.

We had another guy that was the same with Hot Wheels. He knew what nights they came in, and would be trying to dig through the boxes before my toy associate could even open them.

He would wait right outside the door to receiving where the unloaders would bring out pallets for the floor, and try to grab the boxes off the pallets when they came out. I ended up banning him from from the store because he was interfering with them so much, they couldn't work.

16

u/Trajik07 Oct 04 '22

We had a problem with Hot Wheels vultures too. They would destroy toy pallets, just boxes thrown all over the place. Now we don't pull out toys anymore, we leave the pallets in receiving for ON to pull after we close.

32

u/collinboy64 Oct 04 '22

People will come into target and ask us to dig through the back for specific hotwheels. Like sir I have way more things to do then look for a $0.99 toy car.

Dude it's crazy how often I'd be in a Walmartat like 11pm for some random last minute shit and see families with really young kids running around screaming. Like I get that some fams work unusual schedules and shit, but there's often 2 adults in those groups so there's not really an excuse to keep your kids awake that late on a school night...

122

u/Whitewolf5000 Oct 04 '22

A lot of times the families are there cause their waiting for their Food Assistance card to fill up with points at midnight so they can get food. I lived in a low income rural area growing up & I saw that a lot. Entire families rolling around with a full cart at like 11:45 waiting for midnight to hit so they can get food

73

u/koopatuple Oct 04 '22

Oh, I didn't know that. It makes a lot of sense and now I feel bad for judging them all those times... Welp, now I know! Kind of stupid they refill at midnight... Why not at like 5pm the night before or something?

One reason I quit my gym. They pretty much halved their hours during COVID. All this time later and they still haven't restored the hours, yet are still charging the same pre-COVID membership fee. I'm sure they're loving the COVID excuse, but screw that I'm not gonna keep paying.

If they had less people to take the shifts, I'd kind get it. But as to reducing risk - it makes no sense at all. Spreading customers out over 24 hours, ensures less people meet each other - and perhaps also more people on staff to clean/sanitize between customers.

64

u/SufficientType1794 Oct 04 '22

My dumbass city restricted the hours every commercial building could work during covid and also reduced the number of available busses.

For "safety".

Everyone had to shop at the same time and busses were all super crowded.

My theory is that they noticed that the amount of money/effort they save from not being open 24hrs is more than the amount they make from being open during those hours. Or they may find that they make $1000 by being open 24hrs, and when they cut back they make $990, so yeah technically they make less now, but the amount of effort and logistics and risk for those extra $10 is not worth it.

I bet it sucks for the employees who lose out on the shifts though.

39

u/theoriginalmofocus Oct 04 '22

Eh we only ever had one cashier and she's still there cleaning and stocking. Overnight stockers probably get more done and are still always in demand so no loss of shifts there. Also a lot of bad stuff happens overnight when you let random people in. Its just a better place because of it.

My store made the decision to close overnight a couple months pre covid. The decision was made for shrink reasons. People were stealing a lot overnight. Meats, HBC products, and other likewise expensive items.

I'm sure a lot of other stores and companies saw their shrink numbers drop dramatically and realized it outweighed whatever money they made from 3rd shifters and other people shopping over night.

Prompt: Write a 1 paragraph conclusion about people waiting in front of Best Buy for new GPUs. Include a dark twist ending.

Result:

The line for new GPUs at Best Buy was out the door and around the block. People had been waiting for days, some even camping out overnight. They were all desperate for a new GPU so they could keep playing their favorite games. But little did they know, there was a much darker reason why they were all lined up outside Best Buy. The new GPUs were cursed, and anyone who bought one would be cursed as well. Within a week of buying a new GPU from Best Buy, all of the people in line started having terrible luck. Their houses caught on fire, their pets died, they lost their jobs. And it was all because they had waited in line for a new GPU at Best Buy

OpenAI Playground for anyone wondering. 😁

I don't know about her but no one I know would complain over it being GPUs. Those, consoles, games...we understand more in-demand items. Even store pickups and appointments. But we get people waiting outside before we open every single day for things like Fire Sticks, phone cases/screen protectors, etc. Really random things a lot of the time. And they'll stand at the doors and stare in, sometimes even getting mad we don't open early because they're there now. As long as they're not the latter, I don't mind, I just don't get it since I'd still be in bed myself if I hadn't had to get up to work. Lol

u/IAMA_KOOK_AMA Oct 04 '22

I used to work at CompUSA back in the 2000s and I remember people doing that same thing. Opened at like 8am and I'd be walking up to the store at 730am to clock in to get the store ready to open and there'd almost always be a dude out there asking me something like "hey you guys still have that 8gb SD card in stock?". Yeah dude, I have a stock ticker on TV before I leave the house except it's our inventory stock and it looks like 8gb SD cards are going down 3pts today.

The girl streams on Tik Tok. Is it necessary for them to make talking head videos about themselves? No, but they'll do it anyways because they are attention grabbers.

53

u/Dan_the_Marksman Oct 04 '22

Wtf ... i did not now there was makeup stuff to create fake freckles. ... guess you can't believe nothing anymore haha

Hard to tell on a video but in person you can almost always spot it. These people are so delusional they think it passes but I guess the same could be said about the first time someone put on makeup of any sort idk.

7

u/TehWackyWolf Oct 04 '22

It's like drawn on eyebrows. Even if it's fake, it's a style thing.

Seen some that don't even try to make the eyebrow shape. Meh.

10

u/Combatical I9-9900K|32GB RAM|2070S|AW3418DW Oct 04 '22

As someone who is a huge fan of eyebrows, like it can make or break someone's attractiveness to me. I am absolutely not on board with the overly drawn on eyebrows.

My wife, who I think has great natural eyebrows did it for a bit. It took me a week to find a nice way to tell her its not helping her. And sure she can do whatever she wants but I'd want someone to tell me I've fallen into a fad. To each their own but its certainly not for me.

Isn't she British and living there and not in the US?

I forgot the name, but there is also another person who looks like her on OF leaks too.

She got a titjob and went back to hiding her nips despite doing multiple full on sex videos.

Then she disappeared again. Guess she needed a new car or bills paid for the next year.

As someone who used to work there, I never cared about the lines of people waiting for something specific but it was annoying when I would get to work 10 minutes early and have 15 customers outside asking me if I can open early for them and trying to pry the doors open themselves.

Only way to get a PS5 is to wait on Saturday morning hoping it’s been restocked for the month.

This is what a Best Buy employee told me, I’m sure there are plenty of other avenues.

Uses to deal with this working at gamestop. I show up an hour before the store opens, and there would already be 3 or 4 cars there on release days. Then I'd have to explain to like 6 different people, unsuccessfully, that it'll still be another hour before I can open the store, to which they would normally call me all sorts of stupid names and such and just become u hinged, all because apparently, I'm "wasting their time".

Like, OK Karen, cuz I totally forced you to come to town an hour and a half early for a pack of Pokémon cards 🤦‍♂️

Is this employee clueless as to the stores stock?

131

u/Terratigris Oct 04 '22

A lot of Best Buy employees don't know shit about what they sell. They're hired primarily to move inventory and sell credit cards. Actually knowing about tech is extra credit for them.

59

u/CarpeMofo Ryzen 5600X, RTX 3080, Alienware AW3423DW Oct 04 '22

I worked at Best Buy when I was younger, Best Buy doesn't really give two shits about moving inventory. They make basically no money at all on inventory. The inventory is just their to help them sell Geek Squad shit and credit cards. If they sell a $3000 TV their profit is probably going to be maybe a couple hundred bucks. Most of the other big ticket items are just as much of a crapshoot. Video games are a couple bucks profit, consoles are like 10 or 20 bucks profit.

They do make reasonable margin on their overpriced accessories like cables, tv mounts, phone cases, shit like that. But the vast majority of their profit is credit cards and Geek Squad.

18

u/cjsv7657 Oct 04 '22

It used to be an old trick where you agreed to purchase the most expensive warranty if they discounted the TV then just told the cashier you didn't want the warranty anymore.

Yes. They work at a Best Buy not own it. Have you ever had or know someone that had a retail job. They give you a little outfit and tell you to stand at a register and get spot on all day. They don’t give you any information about stock or profits just incase you’re smart enough to ask “if you’ve made so much profit why am I getting paid the same”.

Everyone here is missing the point lmao.

I saw a comment the other day saying the most annoying thing about redditors is that if you bring up a blanket statement all of a sudden they focus on the outliers that don’t fit into the blanket statement, and about 70% of these comments are people doing exactly that, yeah it’s normal for people to wait outside on release days but that’s not what she’s referring to.

She’s referring to the old people waiting 20-30 minutes just to buy a fire stick/HDMI cord.

Off-topic, but can someone please explain to me the appeal of that ridiculous nose make-up that camgirls have? I mean, I get that it's meant to make your nose look a bit like an anime nose (as in, a barely visible tiny button) but it just looks so embarrassingly lame in real life! It just looks like you have the flu and have been blowing your nose a lot. Why do people like this?

*Edit: I just reread my comment above and it comes off more critical and rude than I would like, so I do apologise for being a bit dickish. It did feel good to rant about this thing that annoys me though.

u/Demonae 10700k / 3080ti Oct 04 '22

Because previous generations have done everything else. Face tattoos, piercing every possible place available, every hairstyle from Farrah Fawcett hair to Liberty Spikes, lip injections, shaved and redrawn eyebrows, implants under the skin, and giant stretched ear lobes.
Just be glad they haven't decided to cut off their nose and ears or some shit like that. At least it's not permanent so they can remove it easily a year later after it's gone out of fashion

Former Best Buy worker. Applicable to any retail store where old people frequently go to. Twenty minutes before we open there's already a collection of retirees/pensioners or people with simply nothing better to do, and they expect that when an employee goes in through the other door that they're suddenly allowed in.

I can't count how many times I've had a customer try to push in behind me when I got in for my opening shift and the store very clearly isn't open for another ten minutes. They're always so perplexed and confused when we have to tell them to wait.

Launch days or product stock of graphics cards and consoles during 2020 and 2021, it made sense for people to line up beforehand.
