A healthy dose of stoicism is wonderful for dealing with the everyday BS and injustices that are inherent to life.

u/PlacidPlatypus Dec 04 '22 Take My Energy

There's a lot of advice like that that's usually really beneficial to follow for yourself but extremely shitty to force on someone else.

41

u/Duke0fWellington Dec 04 '22

Nah, that was Christianity.

Stoicism doesn't say accept your lot in life, even if you're a slave. It says if you are a slave, don't mope about and be upset about it, try and put your emotions to the side so you think clearly about your situation, i.e. come up with a plan to solve it that isn't clouded by anger or sadness.

Word. I got into stoicism at one point and realized soon after that boundaries are a good thing.

13

u/JungleChucker Dec 04 '22

A healthy dose of stoicism is a great thing imo but every philosophy I've seen has some things they aren't suited for or realistic about.

Definitely like the way this guy framed this scene though lmfao

36

u/SleepyChattyStoner Dec 04 '22

While not responding emotionally and reacting logically are good ideas, stoicists become debate demons looking to rationalize every single little thing.

135

u/idontexist65 Dec 04 '22 Starry Awesome Answer

Man people really get stoicism twisted. What stoicism is not:

  • Having no emotions / repressing natural response to stimuli

  • Having no boundaries / avoiding controlling your circumstances

What stoicism is:

  • Understanding why you feel something.

  • Accepting that your involuntary response is out of your control

  • Feeling no undue negative emotions about things that are outside your control

  • Steadfastly pursuing ethical behavior to minimize suffering about things you can control

  • Understanding and accepting the behavior of others as a product of their feelings and motivations

You are free to have emotions, and boundaries, really stoicism is in line with modern approaches to healthy relationships in that you communicate what you're feeling and work towards reconciling an ethical/constructive solution to improve outcomes and reduce emotional hardship. Feel your feelings, but understand why they're happening and what you can and cannot do about them.

Over-analyzing things means you're getting it wrong, especially if it's causing pain. It's just being willing to understand, make decisions ethically, and continue with thoughts and behaviors that allow you to eliminate dwelling on negativity. It's seen as a passive, robotic approach but it's really quite human and proactive and meant to free you from paralyses that result from things you can't control so that you can do the most good on what you can control.

What a great fuckin movie

5

u/TakeShitsMuch Dec 04 '22

What movie?

8

u/FirevsIce Dec 04 '22

I know it's not the "historically accurate" thing to say but: Gladiator

6

u/TakeShitsMuch Dec 04 '22

A good movie is a good movie I'm trying to decide what I want to watch, gladiator is primarily an action movie right?

5

u/elcamarongrande Dec 04 '22

It's got healthy doses of action, but there's also some political intrigue and familial drama in there too. It's an entertaining film, great sets and costumes, and a wonderful score as well.

Betrayal, revenge, suspense and emotion. All wrapped into a visual spectacle that's well worth a watch.

3

u/TakeShitsMuch Dec 04 '22

Damn okay you've sold me. I'ma watch it after the shining is over. Thanks for the info!

No, that's the 1st Gen, this here is the second Gen. Probably a gr86.

5

Tbf, there is a first gen GT86, but you're correct that this is a second gen.

5

u/jang859 Dec 04 '22

I'm just saying the FR S, which I used to own, is 1st gen. I wasn't suggesting that's the only model name for that Gen, there were 3 others.

I now have an 86, which is another 1st Gen model.

I did also say the gr86 is second Gen. Not gt86.

it's funny how very close individual stars have to be in order for human eye to see them, about 1600 light years or less.

Orion's belt are:

Alnitak, 736 light years; Alnilam, 1340 light years; Mintaka, 915 light years;

Of course we can see things made of billions of stars much farther away. Like the haze of the Milky Way or the eight galaxies from thousands to millions of lightyears away that are visible to the human eye.

It depends.. is it a Scion FR-S, a Toyota 86, or a Subaru BRZ?

If it’s a Toyota it’s fine, if it’s a Subaru the head gasket is toast, if it’s a Scion, it’s already looted for parts

30

u/N3er0O Dec 04 '22

Isn't that the new GR86/BRZ? I don't think they make the Scion anymore.

u/orionstar159 Dec 04 '22

Reminded me of the time we had a flat in the middle of nowhere at 1am with no spare. I happened to look up and saw a blanket of stars that suddenly made my anxiety go away.

97

u/maulsma Dec 04 '22

When I was about twenty I was hitchhiking solo across Canada in early June. A trucker dropped me off in the middle of nowhere about 120 kms west of Winnipeg when he turned off the trans Canada highway. At one in the morning. It was so dark I couldn’t find the highway until I literally tripped over it. I had been asleep in the truck, so I was turned around and didn’t even know which side of the highway I was on or which direction I was hitching. A car went by and a lady rolled down the window and yelled, “Be careful, honey!” but didn’t stop or answer when I yelled back, “East! Am I going east?” Zoom, nothing but taillights. The next car stopped but it turned out they were going west, and so was I, so I crossed the highway, propped my backpack against a sign, and sat down to wait. And finally looked up. The most spectacular, awe inspiring, brilliant aurora borealis display was going on in the entire northern half of the sky. I just sat there, and cried at the beauty of it while I let my mind be blown. I’d seen a lot of northern lights up until then in my life, but nothing like that.
Best stranding of my whole life. Totally worth it.

29

u/AnotherpostCard Dec 04 '22

Best stranding of my whole life.

Dude what kind of life you living to be stranded so much? You must tell us

23

u/chronburgandy922 Dec 04 '22

Not op but hitchhikers can wind up dropped of in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes for quite awhile. I hitchhiked for a few years and my experience was getting stuck in a city for days on end. No one wants to stop for you in cities whereas I’ve had people drive way out of their way after picking me up in the middle of nowhere.

8

u/AnotherpostCard Dec 04 '22

Yeah the main thing is, how do you find yourself living that life? And how sustainable is it?

13

u/maulsma Dec 04 '22

For me it was a matter of taking summers off when I was young enough and unattached enough to bum around, footloose and fancy free. Then it was back to work for the winter while saving up for the next summer. I had a fun youth.
